Re:Facebook was trolling for comments
My observation is that I wish most of the internet fulfilled the technical requirements for a site to be on Free Basics. It would be a slashdotter's wet dream if it didn't look suspiciously like a walled garden/trap.
Specifically, mobile websites should work in the absence of:
JavaScript
SVG images and WOFF font types
iframes
Video and large images
Flash and Java applets -
There is a saying in Russia
There is a saying in Russia, which says that Russians do not give away Russians.
This is a cliche statement, which reflects the mentality of how some of the Russians are taught and trained themselves to believe of anyting non Russian related. Here is the caricature of Russian mentality which summarizes how they want to view you: https://www.facebook.com/photo...
Jokes aside, in United States if somebody would want some law enforcement to give away their informers, we would say: screw you.

Re:What is "biometric information"?Indeed state of the art systems are using deep learning for face recognition:
- Facebook: https://research.facebook.com/...
- Google: http://arxiv.org/pdf/1503.0383...
Check rankings on LFW: http://vis-www.cs.umass.edu/lf..., most of the best performing systems are using deep learning.
Facebook and Google can easily have millions of labeled face images, and there are now publicly available face databases of 0.5M face images, so training data: not an issue. All systems perform some preprocessing to align faces to a canonical frontal view, so any face image that is not totally a side view is usually well recognized. Strong pose (both tilt and pan), illumination changes and occlusions are still tricky though. Curious about the issue of this lawsuit. -
Why that made sense
That is of course, assuming you are strong in the force to begin with and just had a huge demonstration on how the force is used to get into someones mind...
Why do you not think she would be able to use force persuasion immediately after she successfully resisting Kylo's mind assault? It would have opened up new pathways into understanding how something could work, kind of like riding a bicycle successfully suddenly clicks with you...
What's sad is that every one of the supposed "plot holes" like this one you picked are in fact not holes at all if you simply take ten seconds to think about what happened in the movie up to that point.
To see someone tear apart mot of the other similarly small-minded supposed "holes", read this.

Re:Does that $600 include a ice pack?
40,000 customers instead of 10,000,000.
Judging from DK2 batch size of 10k units, and the ship date moving 2 months forward in 1 hour.Oculus will not make VR "a part of the daily lives of billions of people" (Zuckerberg) with that kind of price point.

Re:this is good for press blasts
why the hell would you resort to a picture of text? has the internet gotten so dumbed-down with apps for this and that and facebooks and twitters and instagrams that nobody knows what a fucking hyperlink to a different website is anymore? i mean that is the main navigation tool of the hypertext transfer protocol that is the very foundation of the world wide web, aka the internet as defined by most casual users.

Re:This is really a regulatory problem
"using equipment long past their usable life span"
You realize that phrase is self-contradictory, right?
Windows XP and IE6 support SHA-2.
You realize that PC operating systems aren't the big problem, right?
users know the exact risks and are either working around them or living with them (and unlikely to be browsing Facebook anyway).
Facebook disagrees with your assessment of what people are using to browse Facebook, and is doing a lot of work to support those out of date systems.

Lobbying orgainzations?
If the Zuckerbergs give their money to organizations that help people directly, then good. But I wonder if they plan to give part of their money to lobbying organizations, including organizations that push for more immigration. From their letter to our daughter:
Can we build inclusive and welcoming communities?
Can we nurture peaceful and understanding relationships between people of all nations?
Can we truly empower everyone -- women, children, underrepresented minorities, immigrants and the unconnected?
Maybe they mean just that and nothing more, but maybe they're preparing to push for freer immigration into the US.

Re:Joe Barton?
Oh yes, I remember. He's the one that thinks that wind turbines will use up the wind and cause Earth to warm up.
https://www.facebook.com/reale...
They will extract energy from the wind, that much is true. There has to be some local measureable effect of a tiny bit less wind, because the energy changed form. It's pretty laughable though, to think that towers with their tippy tops around 600 feet in the air will use up all the wind on earth. It's a big tall atmosphere. And warming? Where do these people get their science? They'll deny that there is such a thing as the greenhouse effect, but believe crap like that.

Re:if they really want revenge
A few westerners, including Americans, have joined the YPG (Kurds). They recruit online:
https://www.facebook.com/TheLi...The US government has stated that it is legal to join, although they discourage it. But let's face it, nobody here on
/. would ever get through the physical :DThey're looking for "specialists like architects, doctors, engineers, technology specialists, media and translators" as well though:

Re:Austin?
Follow some of the tech companies that thought the same thing and looked for lower cost data centre cooling bills. Hate to have the neighborhood become crowded, but have you seen the location of the air cooled Facebook Datacenter? Others are moving in for the same reasons. Nearest interstate freeway is about 50 miles away.

Re:All right!
you concede that the internet is shitty.. and with the pathetic attitude toward women rampant even throughout this site.. the thing that -really- pisses you off is that some women can learn about tech in peace.
Oh, look a white knight to defend the honour of women online everywhere! As if, only women are mistreated online? despite some reports to claim the contrary. Could you please, remind me what stopped women from coding before? Must have been that Star Wars poster. Which is more demeaning, one who thinks women are strong and capable enough to enter CS without special treatment or the one who thinks they need a safe space from Star Wars posters and men.
So you know the score, yet you're angry about solidarity or cooperation because that "presupposes women's inability to succeed on their own." Nice one with that brilliant, individualist, philosophy-capsule from the MRA dept!
If you protect the rights of the individual you protect them for the collective. The narrative passed on by you and others ignore the individual because Cultural Marxism and identity politics.
Keep trying to convince yourself that I am just an angry MRA meanwhile feminism becomes its own worst enemy.
I pity you.

Re:This is offensive
The emoji of the people in the sauna shows them as being naked. This is highly offensive to most religious people.
I don't think Finns really give a shit. If you're worried about seeing naked people then you probably shouldn't go to Finland.

At least according to the posts on Mom's Facebook page that are linked from the AJC article.
Very little mention of the other students that actually did the work.
Really lady?

Color on a B&W screen
I made a TI-86 (& later a TI-92+) display multiple colors despite having a black & white LCD (picture here of the TI-86). I was sitting in an airport in Alaska trying to program it to do grayscale (by switching between black & white fast enough...many have done that before), but since I did not know how to program interrupts on the Z80 at that point, I just used a delay loop. I found that, for certain values of delay (depends on the remaining battery charge), it produced flashing red & green instead of black & white. More fiddling later showed that it is apparently caused by writing to the framebuffer at 100 Hz (whereas the screen refresh rate is quoted as 50 Hz), & that it was possible to get it to stop switching red & green around between flashes, but apparently not to remove the flashing effect entirely. This is probably because it has to build up stress (like when you poke a bare LCD & it makes that rainbow effect), & then it bleeds out & must be replenished periodically (although I might just have the timing slightly off, even though I switched to interrupt-based timing).

Real Names are Necessary
Real Names are necessary to help support Facebook's customers.
Facebook has an obligation to their customers to supply them with clean data. They pay Facebook money to help them target the exact people that they are looking for.
https://www.facebook.com/busin...You are not their customer. You are Facebook's Product. You are giving Facebook huge volumes of data, personal data, etc. about you in exchange for Facebook allowing you to communicate with friends and family easily.

Re:If that's how Pokemon Int'l treats its fans...
If that's how Pokemon Int'l treats its fans
Ramar Larkin Jones isn't a "fan" - he's a event organizer who was running a Pokemon themed event for which he was selling tickets. The selling tickets parts got left out of the linked article somehow - I wonder why. (Actually, I don't need to wonder - the article is slanted all to hell and back.)
-
Business
The big piece of information that always gets neglected in these articles is that they didn't sue because he was throwing a party, but because he runs a business which hosts party events and then used Pokémon to promote such an event. Here is the company's trashy Facebook page. "Fans" and "Businesses" are NOT the same thing. https://www.facebook.com/Rucku...

Re:Thaty's the wat to do it ...
On my first visit to Mexico, my friends and I went to a fast food place called "Ricky's Tacos". Instead of having an option to supersize the "value meal", one could add a bottle of beer to the order for 7 pesos. The other surprise was that the spokesman for the chain looked a bit like Charles Barkley (see: http://www.facebook.com/rickys...)

"Support the Library !!!"
That's what we'd holler to cars driving by as we rallied to support the fine folks who had taken the initial steps at the Kilton Library (you might recognize my name from the article - OK nm it's slashdot). Do read this story to get a better sense for what this sort of street-level activism is like (and how enjoyable it can be).

Re:How long will it take
a bridge between petrol heads and police
Spot on, in fact there's a fair number of responsible petrol heads amongst the NSW highway patrol, and they have been in their ranks for a couple of generations now. IMO they're "eating their own dog food" and genuinely trying to set a good example for the bogans to follow.

Re: Mostly pointless
You're better off installing Facebook and just putting a bookmark to the web page on your launcher.
+1 For you sir! https://m.facebook.com/ is far superior to the shitey app. You can post pictures, message, and read all the wedding announcements and funny baby pictures without FailBook stealing your contact list, monitoring your location and generally being a douche. And to really put a cherry on top: it stops running when you're not using it! If you live and die by your FB messenger, this won't work for you, but if you actually want your phone to be a phone with some juice in the battery, this is the way forward!

Re:When
When is Plumber Day?
Car Mechanic Day?
Kindergarten Teacher Day
Teacher day, may 5th and 6th.
It's hard to take an 'appreciation day' seriously. I do my job, I get paid. I don't feel unappreciated. Pie day is cool, because pies taste good. -
Re:Bullshit ...
I hope the library board sends back a big fuck you like librarians sometimes do
We're rallying outside the library on Tuesday to show our support for the Trustees and to let them know that the People support them. 80 Main St. West Lebanon, 6PM, for anybody north of Boston (2 hrs) who'd like to participate. RSVP if you're on Facebook.
