Typo
I'd like to report a typo in this post.
"This happened after an upgrade from Unix to Windows.", should read, "This happened after a downgrade from Unix to Windows"

I don't think this will work
The general public might be naive about a lot of the stuff that goes on in the computer world; but, telling each of them that they have to go out and spend thousands of dollars to replace their perfectly good hardware, isn't going to go over very easily. The job of those that know, and are against the idea, is to educate the general public. One area of focus might be something along the lines of, "why are USB storage devices any less secure than floppies or other methods of transferring files from point A to point B."
In reality, I see this as another "security hole" blown entirely out of proportion. But don't spend time attacking MS directly with hatred towards the idea. Focus instead on educating the public that don't know any better. Believe me, millions of angry customers who will now have to replace thousands of dollars worth of hardware, is something even MS can't ignore.
Is this leverage for Microsoft? If anything, I'd say this is leverage for the OS community who make no attempt at taking every last penny we earn.

Free scroll wheel? YES!
Free scroll wheel: it works!
:)
Seriously, I choose iPod because of the software (iTunes and the firmware), the coolness and form factor. I don't care really about the input device... most of time the damn thing is playing and I'm not using the wheel!!! -
Re:Yes
"...but there is also the risk of important aspects being missed, or errors creeping in unchecked, as highlighted in a previous slashdot story."
The article is discouraging if you wish to use the information found for research.
I believe a "known fact" system would help prevent issues like this.
When a statement, date, name, etc. is accepted as fact, it is marked as such. When it is changed a flag would be assigned suggesting the reader to look at the wiki's history and decide if the change was valid or not.
A system similar to this would help editors and readers alike find errors or inaccuracies much quicker.
Free iPods? Sure. -
Re:Security Functionality
To get a free iPod of course!
No joke, a free AOL trial has got me one step closer.

Re:I do research all the time
Hmm that sounds unhealthy, but sacrifice in the name of research can't be that bad can it? I've been doing an experiment to see just exactly how much people hate spa m!(even the spam website is awful). Turns out they're willing to gut you like a fish, beat you sensely, or perform any number of acts of excrutiatingly painful torture. Conclusion: people much prefer the taste of actual products, rrather than the byproducts of the products.

Can't use OS X
The reason why is Apple's Mac OS X requires Apple ROM.
I'm pretty sure at some point, someone's going to come up with either a hack for Mac OS X, or a way to fake out via some open source ROM.
I'd bet it takes some serious skills... but it's bound to happen.
And Apple's DMCA lawyers will be all over it.
Someone will still attempt it, because it would be one hell of a feat. I'm curious if PearPC might be moving towards that direction slowly.

Oh no
The one thing I hate about oldschool video games is the music. After hours of playing it would stick in your head... and wouldn't go away.
After weekends of playing Super Mario Brothers 1, I'd be walking to the bus stop sideways, croutching to see if I can go down a manhole, and jumping up the steps of the bus.... with that damn tune in my head.
My principle at the time also looked like Bowser, so that didn't help at all.

Why DSL Sucks
DSL IMHO is the big problem. Our digital economy is to reliant on it, and it's to limited. Here's why:
It's limited based on distance from the POP (point of presence). As a result, there needs to be rather plentiful hardware to cover an area. So when they started deployment, they scattered some about. See if DSL would catch on... it did.
But the problem is, filling in the gaps isn't cost effective. So there are many small gaps, but it isn't worth the cost to the DSL provider to blanket the area.
Cable on the other hand, has the advantage of blanket coverage. They know they have customers with no options (other than satellite). As a result, they can charge however much they want. If you want broadband, you'll pay it.
IMHO the best option will be when Phone, TV, Internet come in as one fiber into the house. Enough bandwidth for all communications/entertainment needs. As easy to get as a phoneline is today. Connected when they build a house, and you can call to have them activate it.
That will be when broadband will rule.
Phone #, IP should be issued with the line.
Then you pay for service (phone service, email, music download service, Cable TV, VOD, etc.) Anyone can provide them.
Some federal solution IMHO would be best. Provide the bandwidth and IP's. Terminate the line in the house basement. From there on, the homeowner deals with it. Get a router, go wireless, etc. etc.
Cap uplink at perhaps 512k (more than enough for a home user).
If you want to run your own servers, you can contract someone to run a dedicated line for them. communications lines are for personal use only.
That would IMHO be the best option. Fast stable internet in every home...
Imagine how great it would be knowing all americans had broadband. Communication could be endless. Things such as webhosting would include the ability to run a streaming TV station. Talk about taking back the media. You could have your own TV station with nationwide reach.
Cable companies no longer have a monopoly over networks in neighborhoods. In theory as an IP network, it could be a company in CA providing service to your NYC appartment.
Could even get Japaneese TV as good as the Japaneese do.
VoIP would make phone calls much cheaper too.
Life would be sweet.

Re:Betamax eh?
Granted. But how many times do you accidentally throw your beta tape against the wall?
Normally you would do that to a John Asscroft and Barbara Bush porno tape "Giving Sweet Hot Justice to the first Mother".
In those cases, being frail is a good thing.

Betamax eh?
Well the only thing more annoying than betamax IMHO is those 3/4 inch tapes. For some reason they are still used by some media companies internally, and B2B. Large, heavy, and the decks are a real pain in the ass to operate. Not to mention dub to another tape, and quite a bit of quality is lost.
Ah quicktime, the ideal video format for transfering video across offices.

ipods and sneaker net
You can back up a lot of stuff to your iPods, then sneaker net it over to your buddys house.
That alwasy seems to be the best method, and even thought the latency is bad, the bandwidth is unlimited :D

bringing work home on an ipod
Whats the big deal if you are using a free iPod to back up your hard drive, to take work home, or if your using your mini cruzer?
There are a lot of times that I need to bring work home to complete a time sensative project. Sure, bringing work home sucks, but still, it's better than using a floppy. -
Why win one, when you can just get one for free?
First of all, this isn't spam, so don't smear this post with hateful messages. Blarg. I personally know 2 people that have gotten Ipods this way, and it ended up costing them nothing. link All ya do is click on that link, sign up, complete an offer, refer 5 friends, have them do the same (offer wise) and you get a free ipod. Here's how to get it for free. Complete the Ancestry.com offer. Its free for 14 days, and doesn't charge you anything til after that, so you can just cancel before the 14 days are up. voila, free ipod.

Perhaps this customer wasn't crazy.

10GB Lines
My school (UNO) is currently implementing 10Gbps lines into the College of IS&T. However, being a sophomore, I don't get much chance to play. We've also got a super computer, and a lot of other fun toys. All that really was the selling point. The prospect of being able to eventually play with that stuff sold me instantly.
To hell with free iPods. If I want one of those (which I do), I'll go to FreeiPods.com. For a school to entice me, I don't want gimmicks or handouts, I want hands-on experience with bleeding-edge technology that I wouldn't get to touch otherwise. -

Re:reimbursement
Besides the fact that they are greedy corporate bastards, the purpose of this is to keep the money away from greedy government bastards.
Our laws are based losely off those of england, and include the simple concept of "all things belong to the government, you simply pay taxes so you can use them". As such, "unclaimed property" is an oxymoron.
Many states have what are known as "eschew" laws. If a giftcard expires, all of the money goes to the state. These service fees allow them to take money from the card, without having it expire and go to the government.

Re:I think it's an inside job
Good point,
One comment - the criminals would not be too likely to buy a bunch of $5 cards if they are going to swipe (and probably "swipe") a few cards at/from the store.
No one from Walmart cares if you walk out with a card that has not been really purchased since they are supposedly worthless...
You need the physical cards just so you can write the numbers of the ones left at the store on them. This makes the scam profitable from the first use of a number you swiped with value on it (instead of waiting to be in the black for a bunch of $5 cards...)
get a free ipod! This really works... Last Gmail invite left!...
