Re:Wololo!
Mostly it's the user interface and integration with iTunes. Plenty of other portable digital music devices have more features (like support for more formats), are smaller, and cheaper, but I've yet to try one that is as user-friendly as the iPod.
One thing that bugs me, however, is that iTunes for Windows refuses to behave like a standard windows app. When you minimize it, it doesn't become the last entry in the Alt+Tab list, and in general has some wacky GUI choices. I really wish Apple would take the time to address these issues, but even those short comings make it difficult to deny the ease of use of an iPod.
Also, you can get several for free. -

UpgradeThe article continues: "Following the patient's successful mastery of Pong, we changed the software to run Doom3. Unfortunately, the native processing power of his cerebrum (based on very old, biological technology) only allowed him to run the game at 18 fps, and he kept gettign fragged"
"Plus, then the lights flashed, he turned evil, and we had to shoot him in the head with a plasma gun."

Ah yes, Film School at USCWhen I attended the USC film school (graduated in 2000), it was about a year early to finish anything in HD in a cost effective manner. So we shot in 35mm, at great cost and effort, and I wouldn't have given up that experience for anything. We got terrific price breaks on cameras, film, jib arms, etc. And there's nothing quite like the burning of actual film and the relocation of the 70 pound camera apparatus that causes you to carefully think and pre-plan every single shot and angle. Looks great also.
So when it came time to do the VFX (which nearly every other film eschewed), we had to use the film scanner and recorder (they had a leased, donated Quantel Domino, which scanned and recorded film at 3K resolution). Ah the pain. There were at least two guys trying to finish very complicated heavy VFX films in the basement, and for all I know they're still in there. (I'm talking about you, Eric)
I'm still surprised anyobdy making a serious film would consider shooting it on standard definition video (such as DV) unless there are specific aesthetic or operational needs, such as looking for a handheld documentary look (which I hate) or shooting in the middle of the Ocean (such as Open Water). Given the color depth, resolution, and just sheer great look of film, it's a shame when people are forced to use DV for budgetary reasons.
Film school -- great fun -- poor investment.

Gender-Bending avatars
What about those people who play the opposite gender in online games?
By at least one account up to 56% of male players and up to 33% of female players play an opposite gender character. Do these avatars reflect their real-life persona in some way? I personally don't feel I'm anything like my EQ level 63 Female High-Elf Cleric. I simply played a female because of the social advantage gained in a game like EQ.

Hrmm...
How many people actually jump on the "bandwagon" and switch search engines just because some one says it's "new and fresh"?
I gave a9 a try, I like the interface and some of the new features like the search history and the multiple search panes. But shortly after I found myself using google again. Even though a9 uses google, and the results are almost identical, I didn't find anything compelling enough to make me switch.
Does anyone else feel they might be missing some results if they were to use another search engine?
What must a new search engine provide to "steal" users from google?

Lazy Leeching Neighbors
"Then his neighbors dropped-by, saw what Andrew had done, and they cancelled their telephone and cable TV services, too, many of them without having a wired broadband connection of their own. They get their service from Andrew, who added an inline amplifier and put a better antenna in his attic. Now most of Andrew's neighborhood is watching digital TV with full PVR capability, making unmetered VoIP telephone calls, and downloading data at prodigious rates thanks to shared bandwidth."
Andrew Greig should force his neighbors to contribute to the network by at least sharing their disk space for serving even more tv shows. Perhaps if the neighbors were up to the challenge (and didn't cancel their cable) they could even grab episodes of their favorite shows to share.
I'm not sure how big Andrew's pipe is, but I'm sure he won't be able to support the entire neighborhood.
I would consider setting up something similar but my neighborhood is infested with senior citizens who's VCR's are probably all blinking "12:00 PM".

Rant / Rave
I disslike Sony for hindering the use of their products with anything besides other Sony products.
Sony's "NW-HD2" music player only accepts their proprietary ATRAC* audio format. What about all my mp3's?
More often than not, in order to achieve a Sony product's "full potential" you must have a Sony Computer or at least a Memory Stick reader for your pc, or a Sony TV with memory stick built in.
While Sony innovates in some categories, digital cameras, televisions etc. Their design team dropped the ball on the PS2. The PS2 is simply two PS1 cpu's in one box. They didn't improve the controller design, nor did they include a hdd or network connection. Those must be purchased separately. And for kickers, they placed they power switch on the back of the system making it difficult to turn on/off in a media center. This awkward switch position placement allows Sony to make a few extra bucks selling an adapter which "moves" the switch to the front of the machine, where it belonged in the first place.
*Takes deep breath* I feel better now.

Re:wtf?
Cease and desist! I own the patent for this. It's what I call CrackNet.
I had problems figuring out how to power it without the lithium ion batteries burning the sensitive skin on the backside, so I use kinetics -- cheeks rubbing together produces an amazing amount of energy. There's a thin wire, like a bra underwire, that runs through the top that's connected to an 802.11g card.
The biggest problem is positioning the computer so it doesn't make women's butts look big.

Re:Hrrr
maybe he meant a free ipod plug... ?
in any case, it's true, you can't have the powerbook on with the lid closed. you COULD disable the magnetic switch (hardware hack).. but like someone else had mentioned it's not a good idea. you'd probably overheat fast being that 1, its in a backpack and 2) the powerbook vents some heat through the keyboard... when the lids closed that area would just heat up... -

Re:Its true! less is more!
Nice! I didn't think there was actually a proof that "less is more." However, I think less is actually greater than more. I mean, come on! Less is so much more powerful! (Although, I just realized that on my GNU/Linux box, the proof above doesn't work.)

Terminal Emulation
I have found that, under the right conditions (i.e. lynx or links, vim or emacs, and a decent shell installed on the system), I can actually get a lot of work done. In fact, now that I think about it, I would have less distractions (no instant messaging, games, etc. to distract me). So I guess this is another way less really might be more.

Why not just disable it in the OS?
This thought just occured to me. If USB storage devices are such a security risk, why not just allow the system administrators to disable them? There's no reason to redesign everything! Heck, disable them by default and give me a nice warning when I enable them; I don't care!
Am I missing something or am I a genious ;-)?
