It's the inspirado
Speaking as a content creator myself...
Simple and cool is the toughest thing to do in movies, music and video games. Hell, make that the toughest thing to find in *all* software, laws or even women. That's why if you succeed in finding that core concept of simple and cool, the rest is just getting out the games' way and not messing it up.
Everything is tied to everything else, so it's usually only with hindsight that you can see that, for example, GTA III is really very unlike any of the first person shooters, adventure games, or racers that it borrowed its' core concepts from.
This kind of transcendance isn't anything you can plan or control, either. They key, as with anything supposedly creative, is inspiration. An truly inspired effort will either produce a new kind of game like GTA 3 or Wolfenstein 3D, or games like Halo or Warcraft 3, old concepts but still a blast to play.
Ultimatley what shovelware, movie licenses and sequels tend to lack is a distinct sense of inspiration.
Occasionally though, an ambitious developer's reach exceeds their grasp. I've seen many underserving developers get alot of flak thrown their way, I wish that more gamers were aware of the big picture.
Yes, we all love seeing the paradigm shift, but let's face it, that's really rare. I'll take a great old game anyday. -

Google around; we had full DirectPlay support right from the beginning. The Japanese version of Sega Rally 2 (a launch title if I recall correctly) used it for four-player head to head play, albeit to Sega-run centralized servers. The US version of Sega Rally 2 lacked this feature, alas.

Again, Google around; it was a full blown operating system. If you think that an OS has to include the GUI and the apps, perhaps you should consider taking an operating systems design course. Or maybe just ask Linus Torvalds what he thinks about that. :)

Coincidentally, also Sega Rally 2. The only major consistent complaint is about the framerate dropping from 60fps to 30fps, and, as the Gamespot reviewer points out, 30fps is the framerate that most other games run at all the time.

I think that's a bit tinfoil-hattish. If not the team members, pray tell, what would have carried over? Sure, upper management could have learned from what Sega did, but, really, they could have learned as much whether they'd worked with Sega or not. -

Doom 3: A screwup
I think we can all now admit that id Software screwed this up. Or almost screwed this up, if you are a fan.
The gameplay in the game is far from perfect, a lot of the hype was unfounded. The game also does not have revolutionary graphics, the art direction and animation are great, but things as basic as walls look worse than in Far Cry or even Painkiller. (Compare these two, for instance: 1, 2).
The xBox version is still incomplete, the PC version took 4 years to develop, much longer than they expected, the id probably had some internal problems (that Carmack refers to as "maturing of the team"). While all that is not as bad as the HL2 or DNF story, it's far from perfect, very far. The fact that Crytek managed to pull off being the first with a next-gen shooter is a strong blow to Valve and id.
Now id talks about licensing the engine and it's great, I am sure they will sell quite a few copies, but if you were shopping for a modern engine today, Unreal 3 looks much better. Doom 3 engine was great in 2001, when it was first shown at MacWorld - I don't see a significant improvement in quality since then. Games on Unreal 3 engine are expected in early 2006 (less than two years from now) and there are many companies doing them, so at least some of them are likely to do it on time. Doom 3 games will come after than (since they haven't started yet) and I don't think a 5-year old engine will have a change next to U3 without major additional improvements.
I wouldn't call Doom 3 a failure for id, but it's not a big success either. It's nice that they finally chose to sell the movie rights, that will make them some good money. But I hope they call really get the team together and do better for their next game, otherwise the IP they are planning to build will not be worth much. And if the team can't build games on John's engines quickly enough, the title of game engine god will soon go to Tim Sweeney (or something like that). -
Have you read about NVIDIA's HSI AGP-PCIe bridge?
Given the fact that most people have only AGP ports, this is a barrier to adoption. It has been reported that AGP versions will follow.
Have you read about NVIDIA's HSI (High Speed Interconnect)? It's a PCI Express to AGP bridge that allows NVIDIA to easily make PCIe versions of AGP-native GPUs like the GeForce 6800 and GeForce 5900. Here's a photo of the HSI, which is integrated on the GPU package: NV45's on Package PCIe to AGP HSISo to produce an AGP version of a PCIe-native GPU like the GeForce 6600, all NVIDIA needs to do (theoretically) is turn the HSI the other way. Since NVIDIA has stated that AGP versions will follow "shortly afterwards" (according to this Gamespot article), I don't think the PCIe/AGP issue will be a barrier to adoption.

These are the same geniuses that tried to rip off SNK/Playmore by using KOF characters in some casino games.
Wonderful....although the idea of a Linux machine at the arcade is kind of interesting, especially given the fact that a few games have started to utilize net connections to share stats.
It's more than a little tempting to find out the local aracade's IP, nmap it, see if the machine shows up, if sshd is up by default, and uh...oh...Trinity, you around? :) -

you mean for GBA right? because they did already release it for playstation. however i couldnt recommend it because the loading times were outrageous. there is a translated rom floating around if you want to play it on an emulator though

Most of Obsidian's employees came from Black Isle Studios after Interplay gave it the axe. Black Isle was responsible for gems such as Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, and Fallout 2. The name is different, but Obsidian has a proven track record. There's an interview here.
The release schedule is undoubtedly shortened because Obsidian will be using Bioware's already-complete toolset. Perhaps some small upgrades to the engine will be necessary, but I'm sure most of their time will be spent adding new artwork and scripting the story. -

I guess that exclusive deal getting Oddworld purchased by the Glukkons didn't work out as well as you hoped, did it?
Oh, sure, we all told you when you get in bed with Microsoft, you have to make sure you use plenty of lube... but you were sure they'd give you the backing you needed to fulfil your vision. So you agreed to kill off the PS2 version of Munch's Oddysee and hype up the Xbox, piss off most of your series' ardent fans, and ship for Xbox only.
And then the few people who had an Xbox didn't buy the game (too busy with FPSs), and Microsoft dropped you faster than a Windows box blue screening.
Karma's a bitch, eh?
