Re:Really good question
To reiterate one of the comments in the linked article (because we all know nobody will read TFA
;-)): apparently the question just prior to the astrology==science question was askingNow, for a new subject. Do you ever read a horoscope or your personal astrology report?
The commenter gave a screenshot of page 201 of a rather large PDF file that seems to be the main source for the findings of recent years. So, if that question was indeed asked, the $5 Mechanical Turk study is somewhat based on wrong premises.

Re:Here's what's funny about all of this
Then a bunch of nihilistic apostate Saudis flew airplanes into the Twin Towers, and over 3000 Americans died in the space of a single morning.
How many Americans have died from terrorist attacks since? How many died from terrorist attacks before then? (And no, you can't count attacks on troops in Iraq or whatever, where our presence instigated the attacks.)
What's that? Not that many? And you're many more times to be randomly killed by lightning that a terrorist? You'd have to fly in an airplane constantly, 24-hours/day for something like 3100 YEARS on average before succumbing to a terrorist attack?
NEWSFLASH: Thousands of Americans die every day. A couple thousand Americans die every day from heart attacks -- many of those could have been prevented. Many were due to poisoning by smoking, or eating too many snack cakes, or not bothering to take a daily walk, or whatever. Should we ban smoking, snack cakes, and require everyone to take a daily walk or else be put on forced governmental marches every day? Over a hundred people die in car crashes every day, a significant percentage from drunk drivers. Should we ban alcohol? Well, Prohibition didn't turn out so well. Should we summarily execute someone caught drunk driving, since people who do it are generally repeat offenders? How much action do we take? How much do we allow the government to do?
Lots of people die every day. Lots of deaths could have been prevented. That doesn't mean we should allow the government to take any action it wants.
Knowing what we know now, can any of us truly say that we'd face 300 million people (or 20 million if you're Canadian) and say "I know we could have easily prevented this tragedy, but we're not going to put in place the fixes that would prevent a future tragedy like this because we believe the outcome would be worse than the disease." And if you are willing to do so, are you willing to face a lifetime of condemnation and excommunication from everything you hold dear?
If we could have "easily" prevented a tragedy by fixing a few flaws in communication between intelligence agencies (as you claim), sure -- why not? But that's not how the government responded. It responded by gutting many of the guaranteed Constitutional rights -- and it gets worse every year, from massive spying programs to warrantless searches to illegal detentions to targeted drone strikes of Americans abroad without due process or trial.
I don't care what the guy supposedly did -- if he's American, you don't send a freakin' drone to summarily execute him because you think he may be plotting something. Due process means something. Citizens have rights. If you're in favor of allowing the President to do that, I really don't see much different in authorizing summary executions of repeat drunk drivers or tobacco company CEOs.
Okay, maybe you're not in favor of that. Maybe you just want better intelligence communication, as you said in your post. Well, why the heck are you posting on this thread then? This is about Canadian government overreaching in its spying, equivalent to many of the Patriot Act crap that has effectively gotten around things like the Fourth and Fifth Amendments.
How many "inalienable" rights are you willing to give up? I just want to know. Please list them, and where do you draw the line?
What's really, really funny is that on
/., we are all pro-privacy, pro-dismantling of the security apparatus. But none of us ever stop to consider if we'd change our tune, if one of our family or loved ones was suddenly, inexplicably killed in a horrible way--and then discover that said death could have been easily prevented if only X and Y agencies had bothered to share their information.Look -- if all it would take is for X and Y to talk to each other, the

Re:Just gonna make it worse
No, first they used water, then they realized it only makes it worse, then they used chemical extinguisher and managed to extinguish the fire beneath the passenger compartment. But a battery in the front was still burning, and they had to cut the front part open and puncture the battery so they could extinguish the front battery with water. Surprisingly, pouring water on burning lithium seems to have worked in this case.

When I checked it, all the Redditors were pointing out how bad Reddit fucked things up last time around and most of the posts in the subreddit were just jokes or trolling comments.

TFA has a screenshot of the server error message which shows the real domain (zynga-themepark.com). Not too difficult to figure out the real address given the fact that he's a web developer.

No, it's completely unavailable in my area. However, the countless articles written about it are enough. The fact that so many unconnected people and publications would report it as such vs a handful of anonymous voices that always seem to pop up to defend it via message boards and blog posts helps us determine the reality.
A google search shows countless people who have used it and all complaining about the video quality. With the reporting and public opinion being heavily against you, one can only wonder what it is that helped you form you opinion.
This is a screen cap one reviewer made of it running full screen on his machine:

I've found that the single-spoke steering wheel on my CX (looks like this, from this article) make a perfect laptop stand. Since the steering wheel is practically locked solid above 70mph it doesn't even slide about when you're driving on the motorway.

And what's really funny is despite the glowing praise he gave for the defunct Windows Phone, not a single one was anywhere to be found. Note that he trashed Android in the same breath yet carries 3 of them. What the fuck is up with that?

Re:A tad longer than that
Don't want to be a dick, but my Macbook Pro 17" has the same key spacing as my Apple Keyboard.
Like this one, with the speakers on either side of a tiny, cramped keyboard?
Or did your mean the new new 2012 models, which clearly have exactly the same keyboard for both the larger and smaller models?
Or maybe your point is that that Apple has made their normal keyboards cramped too?
Compare those to real keyboard, made for people who use them for typing: It has a gap between the numbers and function keys, the ESC button is separate, the function keys are grouped in sets of four, the arrow keys have a space around them in all directions and are normal sized, and there are dedicated keys for insert, delete, home, end, pg-up, and pg-dn, in the standard position, with a space around them.
By the way, I just compared the width of my laptop to my normal, standard-sized desktop PC keyboard. Ignoring the numeric keypad, which I never use, the laptop is 4 cm wider than the desktop keyboard. There is absolutely no reason why it couldn't have been made to have the exact same layout!
The doubly stupid part of this whole thing is that laptop keyboards are replaceable. They're manufactured as this little metal tray thing that can be separated easily from the rest of the laptop. Why don't manufacturers make half a dozen different layouts, and let people chose? Some people may want a numeric keypad, some may want dedicated ins/del/etc... keys instead, some people may want media-control keys, others might prefer properly spaced function keys, etc...

breastfeeding is apparentely a sexual content
the picture linked on what should be filtered. Look in the first column, a lot of decpition of sexual content. but two things compeltely blow me out of my mind (as European)
:
1) Male nipple are allowed but female nipple is not (point 2 left msot column)
2) breastfeeding (point 6) without cloth on. What the heck. I have to itnerprete that if you do not have at least a shirt, then it is sexual in nature ? Why ?
3) illegal drug use. Why ? Picture of "drug use" are not illegal in any western european country I know of. Especially marijuana.
Sigh the world would be much better if company were a bit more thick skinned than the average folk. -

Oh come on...you're overstating the most simplistic similarities between these devices. Reasonable people recognize that Samsung really is attempting to copy every detail of Apple's mobile products.

Re:Dumb
...I'm still not dumb enough to confuse a Galaxy with an iPad.
Looks like you've got Samsung's lawyers beat, then: Even Samsung’s Lawyers Can’t Tell the Difference Between Its Tablet and an iPad
From the linked article:
"Can any of Samsung's lawyers tell me which one is Samsung and which one is Apple?" Koh asked. A moment later, one of the lawyers supplied the right answer.
I mean come on, you really can't tell the difference between the device on the left and the one on the right in the heading image of that article? -

Maybe same UI on all platforms not a good idea
Different platforms have different needs and capabilities. Why is the UI in my very limited Roku interface (with its very limted controller) the same as the one on my very capable Windows laptop (i.e., on their website)?
Maybe it seems cost-effective (if you don't count user frustration), but the horizontal-scrolling UI works when it's controlled by hardware arrow keys (Roku), but it's much less than optimal on a webpage (Windows). And my Windows laptop can handle much more functionality than a Roku; too bad they removed all/most non-Roku functionality from the website.
In the slideshow, they acknowledge there are differences between platform UI needs, but they seem to try a one-size-fits all approach. Doesn't Netflix have the resources to develop multiple interfaces?

The whole industryis throwing lawsuits around willy nilly: http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/4/2010/10/mobilesuits.jpg
Pretty much all the big players are being sued by somebody. That graphic's a little old, but it still illustrates just how messed up the patent system must be.
-
Even worse
Actually, when I read the article, it seemed to go pretty far beyond that. It's more like patenting every motion one could possibly make while using a saw, even if you never intend to use such motions. That way, for practical purposes, you can't invent and sell another saw, even one that uses a crappy circular motion, because we own that too.
All of these patents should be invalidated immediately, but then, most patents applied for these days should never even be granted to begin with.
