Desktop widgets: SuperKaramba & gDeskletsBoth gDesklets and SuperKaramba both have oodles of existing desktop plugins written in Python -- so you could whip up or modify what's out there to look and work as she would like.
Of the two, SuperKaramba has more plugins that will appear to the novice or non-geek. To see SuperKaramba applets, go here (though the KDE-Look.org site is currently having fits, so you might have to check back later).
These bits of mostly eyecandy might help make a Linux desktop more interesting to the uninitated.

My prediction : KDE 3.2 will slaughter Gnome!
Don't just take my word for it, download the Mandrake's 10.0 alpha and see KDE 3.2 beta today, combined with Kernel 2.6, this baby is FASTER than the boxes!
Anyway, here is more reasons why Gnome will be Killed!
Gnome Zealot Translate-o-matic 2004
Ever since Gnome 2.4 (and the BETA 2.5) was released, I have found more and more gnome zealots who MUST absolutely advocate GNOME at every possible moment. Here is a guide to some of their claims, and what they really mean.
Claim : Unlike KDE, Gnome is free
Translation : GPL is freerer than LGPL. LGPL allows corporations like Novell
and Sun to have propeitry forks and lock away their changes from the user. Now
that Novell has taken over Ximian you can expect Gnome to get put under
corpirate lock. With KDE you have the choice, you either PAY UP or pay with
your source code. Most companies agree, the majority of commerical software for Linux is written in Motif and Qt, and NOT GTK. Apart from Ximian's desktop, there is no major product using GTK.
Claim : Nautilus is much better than konqueror.
Wrong, if your using nautilus for anything more than a simple finder clone you
can forget it. No split screen, no ioslaves (gnome-vfs can't compare, sorry) and forget about being able to
have a decent file dialog, not to forget that it is as unstable as hell and is
STILL slow on >3 Ghz machines. The latest version decided to copy Windows 95, complete with a my computer icon on the desktop.
Claim : Gnome is easier to use than KDE
Yep, nothing like using gconf-editor to edit all except the most trivial of
settings. Want tear off menus? Want a useable file dialog? You won't find it
here. Gnome was a lot more usable back in the 1.4 series, before sun came along with their usabillity "study".
Claim : Gnome has eye candy

reboot into windows to print using "Comic Sans MS. Gnome themes don't even let you change the colour scheme. Looking at sites like art.gnome.org you will see that the majority of themes are the same one in different colours!
Claim :Gnome has a new web browser

religiously offensive name and it dosen't allow bookmark folders. It also
crashes like a crazy! Apple chose khtml for a REASON! its stable and light! Epiphany is also a faliure, it has gone through 6 major bug fixes and none of the major distrobutions use it because they stick with decent browsers.
Claim : Gnome is more popular than KDE
Despite the fact that the only mainstream Gnome based distro has been EOL'd,
and all the newbie distros such as Mangadrake, Lindoze, $u$E, Lycoris,
Xandroze, Gentoo use kde default, bruce perens decided to make a gnome based distro and everybody hated it because KDE wasn't in it.

Why isn't there Epiphany and Nautilus for OSX?
Because the Gnome guys don't want to see the ugly GTK file dialog on a beutiful OS like OSX. You will never see a Gnome Zealot use OSX!

Gnome translate-o-matic 1.5 has been released
Ever since Gnome 2.4 was released, I have found more and more gnome zealots
who MUST absolutely advocate GNOME at every possible moment. Here is a guide
to some of their claims, and what they really mean.
Unlike KDE, Gnome is free
Translation : GPL is freerer than LGPL. LGPL allows corporations like Novell
and Sun to have propeitry forks and lock away their changes from the user. Now
that Novell has taken over Ximian you can expect Gnome to get put under
corpirate lock. With KDE you have the choice, you either PAY UP or pay with
your source code.
Nautilus is much better than konqueror.
Wrong, if your using nautilus for anything more than a simple finder clone you
can forget it. No split screen, no ioslaves and forget about being able to
have a decent file dialog, not to forget that it is as unstable as hell and is
STILL slow on >3 Ghz machines.
Gnome is easier to use
Yep, nothing like using gconf-editor to edit all except the most trivial of
settings. Want tear off menus? Want a useable file dialog? You won't find it
here.
Gnome has eye candy
Yes, my pirated Win32 fonts with the patent infringing font renderer. Bit
stream vera sans looks like Tahoma put through a shreadder! Of course I still
reboot into windows to print using "Comic Sans MS.
Gnome has a new web browser
Yawb! Along with Galeon, mozilla, thunderbird, konqueror, atlantis, lynx,
netscape and w3m. Yes I need another browser! Not to mention that its got a
religiously offensive name and it dosen't allow bookmark folders. It also
crashes like a crazy! Apple chose khtml for a REASON! its stable and light!
For newbies, Gnome is the ideal choice
Despite the fact that the only mainstream Gnome based distro has been EOL'd,
and all the newbie distros such as Mangadrake, Lindoze, $u$E, Lycoris,
Xandroze, Gentoo use kde default, the Local unix geek showed me Debian, which
installed Gnome 1.4 by default, so it must be good if he uses it.
You KDE guys must be sick of the K
Our G's and monkeys are SO MUCH better, gedit, glib, gconf, bobono, ghex,
gless, same-gnome.
Gnome is themeable
Yep, choose from High, low and medium contrast, default, and clean ice. Wan't
to change the colour scheme? USE GCONF NOOB, plus if you complain about it we
will tell you to fuck off and go back to Windows or KDE.
Gnome has multimedia framework
Its a kludge of esd combined with broken xine libraries. No wonder it crashes
all the time and dosen't work on 95% of video files
My Gnome work station
My 1.1Ghz Packard Bell box my mum bought for me from PC world, that is made of
made to break components, but it has a GEFORCE RADEON 9000 card, so it must be
good.On the other hand, no-one (well, nearly no-one) is suggesting that GTK+
is a replacement for Qt...
Gnome allows mac like operation.
We have a shameless expose ripoff, with a cheezy name. Next thing you know we
will scrap the panel for a cheezy dock clone. Despite the fact that x86
compatible 1 button mice are almost impossible to find, and it dosen't copy
the whole macbar concept. Our auto apply implementation is broken and
dangerous, but you can always use gconf like a real geek.

Gnome problems
Gnome is a popular "open" source "desktop" (read: geek toy) developed by Ximian inc. Unfortunatley, there are some problems, which I will define below. Gnome is a great example on why open source is a bad methodolgy. Ever since Gnome 2.4 was released, I have found more and more gnome zealots who MUST absolutely advocate GNOME at every possible moment. Here is a guide

Re:No loss
A lot of the points you make have been (somewhat) solved with the JDK 1.4.2.
With the GTK+ and Windows XP look 'n feels, Swing programs look like native programs, and adjust themselves to whatever theme you have set up (it only supports the Bluecurve engine for GTK though).
There's more info on it at GnomeDesktop.org
The integration problems you talk about unfortunately still exist, but at least it can look better than plain old metal look 'n feel.

Because Gnome is too buggy.

Zealots always promote the under dog.
In the Open source community, the Zealots always seem to promote the inferior, less popular product.
Two prominant examples are Gnome and Debian. Compare and Contrasted to KDE and Mandrake, and the the former is zealotted more while the latter is techincally better, yet because they are for the masses (in linux terms at least), the Zealots try to make me switch to them.
Gnome is missing a hell of a lot of features, a pain to configure (gconf-editor? WTF), and is slow, not to mention the File dialog. I suggested in the gnome-desktop forums today to remove gconf-editor and maek applications properly configurable, but the leet zealots gave me a -1, troll!
Debian is hard to set up, has a limited range of uptodate packages. (Gnome 1.4? KDE 2.2, Xfee86 4.1 are is what is in the "stable" version I kid you not). Plus mandrake 9.2 has more up2date packages than the "unsbale" version of Debian!
I know I'm probably going to get a "flamebait" from a zealot with mod points, but it must be said. If Gnome fixed its problems then they zealots would turn to a new Desktop enviornment instead. -
Important announcement for KDE fans.

A strong pitch for GnumericDr. B.D. McCullaugh is a big name in statistics, and has made a name for himself in (among other things) testing statistical software. In this article, he says:
The problems that rendered Excel 97 unfit for use as a statistical package have not been fixed in either Excel 2000 or Excel 2002 (also called "Excel XP"). Microsoft attempted to fix errors in the standard normal random number generator and the inverse normal function, and in the former case actually made the problem worse.
That's the entire abstract!According to the release mentioned above, Dr. McCullaugh recommends using Gnumeric instead of excel.

Gnome would gnever to this!
Because they are too busy removing features, their latest attempt is to fuck up nautilus!

GNOME distribution with Mono is *STILL* DANGEROUS

Consider waiting...And not just because the site will be Slashdotted.
I was seriously considering downloading this when the announcement appeared on GnomeDesktop.org, but decided to hold off until the next release.
First, this was announced the same day that Gnome 2.4 was announced. That sort of put a damper on things. I already had a (mostly) Gnome live CD via Morphix Heavy, and it wasn't clear that Gnoppix offered anything new.
Then there was also the issue of the English option being broken.
From what I've seen, the Gnoppix haven't been keeping as current as Morphix. I'm hoping that this changes in the near future, because Gnome 2.4 is starting to convince me that it's a viable desktop. In the mean time, I'll continue playing with Morphix.

The new file dialog
Yeah, we're all bitter about that. (I'm not sure it's fair to give Havoc credit for this, since I'm fairly certain gtk+ is a completely separate project...)
The Galeon web browser
Obviously you haven't tried this before trolling on it. It supports tabs, popup-blocking, and the other most important features from mozilla. I continue to prefer Galeon, but one of ephiphany's biggest goals (which accomplishes does well) is GNOME integration, which was presumably what made it so attractive to the GNOME developers.
We will make file extraction harder...
I must've missed the part of the File Roller install where it deleted /bin/tar...
We will STILL not be including a media player
Seems pretty obvious here that there is one. (I'm going to ignore the rest of this one because it's unsubstantiated trolling.)
blah blah blah GIMP blah blah blah
I suppose you have a better image editor in KDE? (besides, you're giving Havoc undue credit again; the GIMP is a completely independent project, never part of GNOME in the first place). And you should know better than to whine about bugs in development versions of apps... if you don't like the shape 1.3's in, go back to the stable one and let them fix it!
blah blah gnome-terminal blah blah emacs blah blah czech blah blah obscure keybindings
Well, the keybindings are exactly the same in gnome-terminal as in any other... it's your own fault for using emacs.
etc.
I'm not going to give that much trolling so much thought...
Seriously, if you don't like GNOME, then that's perfectly OK, since it's not for everyone. But coming here and spouting unsubstantiated trolling is just counterproductive and does nothing to help anyone.
As far as this article being moderated Funny, well... I stopped laughing at the trolling on /. a long time ago, encouraging this sort of thing is going a long way towards making the discussions completely unreadable. -
Re:Almost PerfectPlease read a little background info to learn what's really behind the "politics" you mention.
the Epiphany developers are a bunch of ideologues who have announced they will never add the features that make the browser useful and usable for me.
The Epiphany developers have a vision on what a browser should and what it shouldn't be. However I can't recall an announcement "We, the Epiphany developers, will never add the features that make the browser useful and usable for Markus Registrada." Do you? Perhaps it would be nice if you'd point out which features exactly you had in mind... -
Why Galeon is not included in GNOMEFrom Final Modules List for the GNOME 2.4 Desktop Release:
There was a lot of vocal support for Epiphany on the mailing list, but little for Galeon. So, the consensus points to Epiphany. That was due to a number of factors: The Epiphany project goals seem to be better aligned with GNOME's goals, the Galeon developers do not seem to be 100% behind GNOME's goals; Epiphany has had regular releases for GNOME 2.3.x; the Epiphany hackers are working within the project to define standards and code for toolbar editing and other functionality, etc. While there are a lot of reservations about offending the Galeon hackers, and great disappointment that the two projects have not been able to cooperate, Epiphany does seem to have the consensus, and make the most technical sense. That is not to say that Epiphany is without faults, or that Galeon is not excellent software -> we do need to make a choice at some stage: Right now there is strong support to add a browser to the Desktop release, and strong support for that browser to be Epiphany.
