I think it is much more important to port softly, and carry a big satchel, within which one may store and transport nuts. Many people do not have a large nutsack. Certainly not one that's acceptably large enough.

Perhaps you would be interested in my "cybernetic nut transportation device". It is a simple device, really, though the way it accomplishes its end goal is really quite elegant. The newer models even feature integrated GPS function.

With such a device, one would be able to locate one's "nut sack" globally, were it ever lost or stolen. I am confident such a device would be popular amongst those who read Slashdot, as many users seem to be living without a nutsack.

While the loss or misplacement of one's nutsack may not be a problem for certain individuals, I for one would be devestated if I were to forego its presence for even one minute.

For, you see, as you may have previously read on slashdot, my nutsack is the messiah. The physical manifestation of the one true god. No danger may befall the progeny of our lord, and the leader of all mankind. All will one day bask in the glorious white holiness which emenates from my nutsack. For white is the color of the lord; white is the color of all that is pure and holy. It shall cover the face of the earth, and spread across the underbelly of those who do not repent.

Some say victory is sweet; I say nay, for this victory will be salty.

Perhaps you would be interested in a Nüsse(tm) transportation satchel with integrated GPS function?

With such a device, one would be able to locate one's "nut sack" globally, were it ever lost or stolen.

I am confident such a device would be popular amongst those who read Slashdot, as many users seem to be living without a nutsack.

If interest were high enough, such a fuction could be easily incorporated at minimal end user cost, were initial production yields acceptable.

I've noticed that the homepage of Hemos has been down for the last month. I wonder if it could be running some kind of unstable "open source" software....

IDC, the highly respected industry auditing company, confirmed this week that stories posted by michael account for more than 80 percent of all stories posted to Slashdot at weekends. This news serves to reinforce what we've known all along: Slashdot is collapsing in complete disarray, finishing dead last in signal:noise ratio tests. You don't need to be a Kreskin to predict Slashdot's future. The hand writing is on the wall: Slashdot faces a bleak future. In fact there is a possibility that there won't be any future at all for Slashdot, due to the actions of michael - a known censoring dictator, as well as an self-admitted torturer of cats. michael continues to lose the respect of all slashdot readers. censored posts die like leaves from a tree during fall, trampled beneath the feet of jack-booted thugs.
Worryingly, the number of stories posted by michael during the week is also on the rise.

Let's keep to the facts and look at the numbers:
Slashdot leader CmdrTaco states that there are 70000 users of Slashdot, down from previous estimates of several hundred thousand.
[Side note: the decline of Slashdot has mirrored the decline of Linux bandwagon jumping failure VALinux]
How many of those readers comment on stories by michael? Let's see. The number of posts to stories by michael averages roughly 110, each poster usually making multiple comments. About 40 different users typically respond to stories posted by michael. Therefore about ((40/70000)*100%) = 0.06% of all Slashdot users care about stories posted by michael. This is consistent with expected results when correlating the estimated audience of all the posts noting michael's hypocrisy and control-freak tendencies. Evidently the users of this weblog choose not to feed that particular troll. Many even choose to no longer visit.

Due to the troubles of VALinux, abysmal sales and so on, Slashdot is in danger of being sold to the highest bidder - the bandwidth costs far outweigh the pitiful earnings from the banners and advertisments posing as stories. Soon Slashdot will be dead, its corpse raped by the censorship policies of the least favorite editor. Readers leave in droves, the herd instinct that brought them here now carries them away.

All major surveys show that Slashdot has steadily declined in readership by the crucial virgin geek market. Slashdot is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Slashdot is to survive at all it will require the removal of Michael Simms from an editorial position. This seems unlikely to happen, and all the while Slashdot continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Slashdot is dead.

UPDATE:
It now seems that Linux bandwagon-jumping failure, VA-Software (formerly VALinux, formerly VA-Research) has finally accepted the inevitable. The pitiful and predictable demise of the still over-priced (at ~$1) startup creates more doubts as to the future of Slashdot. Larger adverts and new editors seem unlikely to save Taco's dream. Michael remains, though he has partially relinquished his censorship duties to his partner in deceit, the geek chick jamie. His debt to society is, as of typing, still unpaid.

On a tangent, This is actually one of the nicer things about Free Software and Open Source projects -- It's almost impossible to kill them via death from above. Corporations are very militaristic and heirarchical in nature. Some bean counter can kill corporate project with the stroke of a pen. Open source, on the other hand, is has a far more democratic base. As long as a couple of capable people are interested in keeping it alive, it'll keep crawling.

This story has been turning up a bit over the last few days - while I'm not one to buy into conspiracy theories, this whole thing seems like a plan that originally had good intentions, but the potentials for foul play are pretty easy to think up, and I've been ignoring it.

People, please don't get upset at CmdrTaco and Hemos as it is obviously not them that is posting the same stories over and over (and over) again. It is the evil hackers who cracked their security and installed a bot that takes an earlier story and reposts it. It's nothing but an elaborate version of the many trollbots.

Best of all, a representative from the store assured me, due to complaints from Bruce Perens, that the store may consider GPLing its inventory "sometime in the future." Looks like another business has finally "got it" and adopted the tenets of the free software movement.

As said in a previous response, it's not so much *if* evolution will occur for the viruses to adapt to the drug, but *when.* However, with this newer approach to developing a cure, where the drug is tailored to the infection, we should (hopefully) be able to counter adaptations of the virus to keep pace with it. I envision a future where you may even be able to receive nanite injections (read: Hemos) and set the nanites to simply disassemble the infecting agent.

However, the main reason we seem to be devloping superbugs at such an alarming rate, is because in western civilization, we tend to declare all-out war on the simplest infections. If you're feeling a little under the weather, or you have a minor infection, you shouldn't be taking antibiotics right off the bat. This can be just as hard on your system as the infecting agent. I'm for more homeopathic remedies for minor things, and then breaking out the big guns when things get serious. Just my silly rant though.

So here it is: A mirror of Slashdot (as of a week or so ago). It exists now for testing: So feel free to post comments and help test the new load balancer. For the curious, the new system has 3 http machines (P2s) and one mysql box (a dual P2) with a load balancer trying to keep everyone all equally busy. And its about time: the old setup has been really stressed out trying to keep up with everyone. Anyway, don't get to attached to any of your comments here, when we're satisfied that the new setup is stable, I'm gonna mirror over Slashdot and make the final switcheroo.

He's talking about hand-held radar systems police can use to detect breathing, beating hearts or other motion through walls and other obstacles. Sounds like a declassified version of the Ground Support Radar [GSR] units we used years ago in the Army. I can see why police would want them, and I can also see why Bram considers them a privacy threat. Depends on how they're used, I suppose.
