K-Lite Codec Pack
Go get the K-Lite Codec Pack
Install that and it will fix all the problems you have...Every couple months whenever I find something tricky I go get the new version...
As an added bonus, it comes with the GSpot Codec Information utility...This handy program will tell you anything you want about any media file. It will also tell you wether or not the file is complete as it tries to render...Overall a great little tool... -
It seems to still exist...KaZaA Lite K++
It looks fine to me, weirdly.

The Mi-24 ain't "fragile"
whilst it is entirely true that they're FRAGILE (ie: you can shoot most down with a pistol)
Not this one.

not sure how long it'll last though... -
Re:Security is a process not a state
I can't tell if you know this from your response, but a Mac-10 is a type of submachine gun.
Your talking more about social engineering rather then actual physical crime.
I was saying there's nothing you can do from a programming stand point that will stop someone from simply stealing your computer.
You would need armed guards and double locking doors and physical deterrents to stop that. Things which as I was saying neither Microsoft or any other programmer can do anything about. -
Re:RealOne
Easy answer here... use Real Alternative. Basically, it's a package with the Real codecs, which you can then use with your favourite media player.
If you're going to click there, you might as well pick up QT Alternative on the same page. Same as above, but for QuickTime. -
Re:Just a note...
You could always use Media player classic + quicktime alternative codec.
try this -
Anti-RIAA: P2P spoofing as a force for good?!
Put it like this. You know when you get the occasional search results even in Kazaa Lite K++ that for some reason are always remotely queued, and the host disappears, or might not even be publicly routable or a transient BGP? You know that strange traffic between supernodes?
That's us. We are direct action anti-RIAA activists, using vulnerabilities in the Fasttrack protocol to poison the Kazaa network's results just enough to throw doubt into the mix. We may or may not be doing the same for Gnutella, though we hear Shareaza's G2 is good.
While not really affecting the users of the network, try asking Overpeer, Mediaforce and so on why they've been getting all these bogus results. In fact, try asking where the hell Mac Granny came from, how, and why.
The doubt isn't usually enough to impinge on a civil case, sadly, they don't actually need proof for that just a preponderance of evidence, it could probably never be unless we flooded the network into oblivion... (the Mac Granny was, we feel, us getting lucky or the RIAA slipping up) but ask yourself why the RIAA aren't using the NET Act for criminal prosecutions? Because they can't PROVE anything. They don't even download the files to check; if they did, they'd find they were garbage, but apparently shared by a legitimate user who's turned off sharing. And remember: "For purposes of this subsection, evidence of reproduction or distribution of a copyrighted work, by itself, shall not be sufficient to establish willful infringement." - 17 U.S.C. sub.sec. 506(a)(2)
The P2P networks' greatest weaknesses and vulnerabilities, in the absence of anonymity, can be their strength. They seek to drive the pirates underground, back into their little blacknet cells... but today's blacknets are tomorrow's release groups in training.
And once a good anonymous p2p system eventually comes along (obviously not Freenet, and even more obviously not ES5), one that hits critical mass like Napster and Kazaa did, with the peak speed of BitTorrent but virtually firewall-proof, highly attack-resistant and virtually untraceable... what will be our enemies' recourse then, now that their tactics have trained new cells of hardcore pirates releasing even more quality material impossibly early for the masses to leech anonymously?
What are they going to do? Sue themselves for, by litigation, finally evolving a p2p network they can't fight? No, they're going to threaten the users, whether they know they're sharing or not. That's where we come in again... and where I sign out. -
Re:talk about shooting yourself in the foot.
Yeah but that's why Kazaa Lite became so popular and can be found here.

My List
As far as desktop apps go, I can only discuss Windows apps, since I don't use X at all. Linux = command line as far as I'm concerned.
- Windows Only
- AVG - Antivirus, free if you don't live in Europe.
- Spybot - Antispyware, freeware.
- Winamp - Nice for playing those mp3 collections.
- Kazaa Lite - Nice for getting those mp3 collections. For the legal-minded, substitute a good cd ripping program (I don't know of a good free one, I use a pay app).
- MAME - Bring back the memories.
- Trillian - Save them from the AIM/MSN/ICQ mix and match hell.
- Cross Platform
- Tight VNC - Install it so you can remote-admin their computer easily when they screw it up.
- Mozilla - Either Moz itself or one of it's 'light' siblings Firebird and Thunderbird for email and web browsing.
Shareware Worth Trying
- Audiograbber: It's free to try, easy to rip with, and only $20 to register.
- GetRight - Assists in downloading all those patches and apps.

Re:Well yeah..
The person who posted this advisory is definitely not a Joe Schmoe.
This is Random Nut. THE Random Nut. You may have heard of him? No? Does KaZaA Lite K++ ring any bells at all? That's him. He knows what he's talking about. If you don't, try the exploit for yourself. Works as he says it does. Or decompile ES5 on a sacrificial machine.
Warning: ES5 is very obviously a crock of shit and I've been saying so since release; alarm bells were ringing for me, frankly, as soon as I saw the website, especially the amusing comments (I'd link, but it's Flash) about Freenet, which is anonymous - ES5's "anonymity"? Well, you can download using overloaded, possibly monitored public web proxies. Streaming movies? From a Dutch web server via mms. Free porn? Thumbnail pages. Notice, though, no special features regarding music. Odd, that. Odd, isn't it?
The alarm bells rang loudly enough for me that when I tried it out, I tried it out on a sacrificial machine. About thirty minutes later I dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda'd the machine from a LiveCD - I'd seen enough.
I'll say again now what I said then, only with the hunches of the K++ creator backing it up as well as my own hunches: EarthStation5 is probably an RIAA-linked sting operation.
Plus, it doesn't even fucking work. :) -
QuickTime Alternative
The best is QuickTime Alternative, made by the Kazaa Lite guys. Get it here.

If I post the links for Kazaa Lite downloads that Google had to remove here on Slashdot, will Slashdot get a takedown notice? If so, will Slashdot comply? Moderators, please mod this up so that it will show up in the Google/Google News search index!

No shit. Companies are pushing porn on kids at younger and younger ages. My wife couldn't believe it when she saw an add that had the "What's Your Flava" song pushing barbies on Nickelodian.
FYI: Flava Dolls have night club theme music about oral sex. Check out the Lyrics. -

Save your Money
All slashdot readers I urge you to save your money and download visual boy advance.
Buy a gamepad for your pc (just like the snes controller) - and you can get it for $9.99 at Wal-Mart, instead of the websites advertised $19.99.
And download kazaa lite (I use overnet for everything, but you can't find GBA Roms on overnet.)
As long as you don't mind playing games on your pc screen (which i don't think any of you do) as opposed to hooking it up to your tv screen, then there's a good chunk of change you'll save.
Plus you'll be able to "preview" any gba title on your pc.
Oh, and if you like the game--BUY IT!!! Make sure you support those people who develop the kick ass games!!! -
I use it........
Because in addition to being a great, skin-friendly audio player, Winamp now supports video too. It's allowed me the uninstall Windows Media Player (WIMP), which has pissed me off to no end with their EULA crap, and instead use Kazaa Lite codec packs. And now that they've retrofitted Winamp 2 to support video with the release of v2.91, I've rolled back to using that, since there are a lot of cool plugins for that, and I'd rather have the lower CPU requirements. I still know a lot of people who use WiMP, but most of my friends who know about Microsoft's EULA fiasco have opted to use some version of Winamp instead for their video needs.

Re:spybot search and destroy
I was going to suggest the "hosts.txt" that comes with KaZaA Lite, which is also pretty extensive (and available seperately). Your best bet is probably to "cat * | sort | uniq" to get the combined list, but it's going to be pretty extensive...

Re:Applaude for 2 reasons
uhhh.. no dude, that's not entirely accurate.. Go to the download section, find an app called "QuickTime Replacement." Infinitely better than Xine's SUCKY interface, and it plays QuickTime better too. No alpha or beta software. Very cool.

Verified downloads
KaZaA Lite has a webpage with verified downloads (seems to be under construction, right now). Or just google. That simple.
Despite this, there is a rating system in KaZaA Lite. -
how to not get any more telemarketing calls.
see, whatchoo gotta do is, like, just baffle them. and tie up as much of their time as possible.
for example, several months ago, while a friend and i were in the middle of a drunken jam, this telemarketer kept calling. i refused to answer, until finally i had had enough.
we had a minidisc recorder going at the time, to capture the drunken jam session LIVE! you know, to offer bootlegs to all 2 of our fans. and i had a small little intercom/speakerphone button on my cordless phone. spiffy, no?
so click here if you wanna hear what happens when a telemarketer calls a couple of drunks trying to make crappy music.
if you listen closely, you can hear the telemarketer try to do her job without laughing. you can hear me, toyotally blitzed, trying to answer her questions but getting them wrong ("NO!" she says! POW!) anyway, i have no idea why i said shoney's, as i've never eaten in a shoney's.
anyway, i think we defeated her by the end. i hope you enjoy. -
Re:I think that it's reasonable, though
Gnutella is broken, as anybody comparing FastTrack to (your choice of Gnutella servant here) can attest. It's slow, downloads have a completion rate that is barely usable, and even advances like swarmed downloads don't work very well. Here, try this.. Kazaa Lite is the clean version of Kazaa. Then try this. Limewire is relatively popular, and wholly commercial.
You can post your findings here.
I've tried Shareaza too, and it's faster and has a nicer interface than the other Gnutella servants. It's not, however, on a level with Kazaa yet.
You'll notice that this whole debate over the legitimacy of Gnutella2 (or Mike's Protocol, as Vinnie likes to call it) has two distinct sides: on the one hand, you've got the COMMERCIAL developers, including Vinnie Falco, LimeWire, and Xolox; on the other hand, you've got Mike Stokes and Gnucleus.
What this article fails to mention is that the registration of Gnutella2.com is the real issue at stake. The commercial interests are pissy because they've been one-upped by an upstart, as they see it.
Gnutella 2 is deservedly named, and clearing away the cruft was the only way to improve Gnutella. Mike Stokes clobbered the adware vendors with Shareaza, and did what they were all afraid to do: start fresh, start clean, and start out on a level with the current state of the art P2P applications currently available. I applaud the guy for having such guts. He registered the name, and he deserves to keep it. F*ck the spyware perpetrators. -
Re:Cool
Just download K++2.0.3 or a gntuella client and you can get all the TV shows you want.
Thanks for the info. I've only used BitTorrent a few times (last Sunday my ReplayTV didn't record the 300th Simpsons for some reason, so I was able to get it from the Internet and was happy with BitTorrent even though multiple instances blue-screen my Windows 2000 box).
I didn't realize it had these problems. I've never used IRC or Usenet to get binaries. And as far as special formats, the shows I've gotten from BitTorrent have been in
.mpg or .avi format, I didn't need to do any conversion. From what I've read there are upload-restricted clients available but I haven't investigated them. I will look into K++ though. Thanks! (Here's a link -- K++ is KaZaA Lite.)

GNUstep + 3DKit
You should take a look on GNUstep + 3DKit
...
GNUstep (url) is an OpenStep implementation. It aims to be multiplatform (even if for now it's mostly linux/bsd based... under Windows it's alpha state), and as Mac OS X is also an OpenStep implementation, it's really easy to write GNUstep apps and port them to Mac OS X (in fact most time you only have to create a new project in ProjectBuilder, add your files, redo you nib with InterfaceBuilder, and voila, it's done). Take a look at GNUMail for an example of a GNUstep/MacOSX program.
Big advantage of GNUstep is the OpenStep framework (Foundation and AppKit), which is really powerfull and easy to use, along with RAD GUI builder (Gorm on GNUstep, InterfaceBuilder on Cocoa); You could program in Objective C or Java (But Objective C is nicer imho), or even in ruby/smalltalk .. ;)
It should be easy to add scripting to your application with StepTalk (url) and AppTalk (url), and 3DKit is a framework for creating 3D Scenes (url) ...
If you want some tutorials, check this site -

Re:Kaaza Lite
There are actually several different Kazaa Lite homepages. I don't think any of them are official. One of the best is http://doa2.host.sk/.

On a Quasi-Related Note...
Why are there so few functional file sharing apps for Linux? AudioGalaxy blows chunks, Kazaa-Lite works only with Wine IF you have saintly patience and the spare dll's handy, and Limewire isn't a walk in the park either unless you have Java installed and the $PATH enviroment variable right - not to mention any needed dependencies. I'm not adverse to commandline (I prefer it for most administrative tasks) but I'm not going to run some bare bones text-based Gnutella client in a friggin terminal. I'm too spoiled for that.
I'm just surprised the Linux community hasn't made more noise about this... or is everyone dual booting? -
Trailer download!

Hosts file.
Kazza Lite provides a nice hosts file (under the 'supertrick' link) that will block many anoying pop-ups and other nasties. It's for windows but I cut 'n pasted it on to my firewall. And that's what I think of the morality of plocking pop-ups.
-
Get a good HOSTS file for thisAbout a year ago when Kazaa-Lite came out I changed my hosts file to include a list of thousands of ad websites. Suprisingly, I now rarly see ads, and combined with Mozilla's popup blocking I'm really spoiled. When I'm on others computers I can't believe how bad the web has gotten lately.
Really its only a few websites which do the majority of the ads, so not that many sites actually need to be blocked. Anything that makes it through my HOSTS file is usualy on a site that I enjoy (ie. Slashdot) and so I'm not bothered by the ads. One drawback could be that you see an annoying message where the image is supposed to be, however there is software to change that as well.
The hosts file I use can be found here: Kazaa Lite Webpage, you'll have to click on the "supertrick" button on the left, since I'm too lazy to figure how to directly link.
-
You can beat them.
This is more than "a bit of a scam" -- it's immoral and undoubtedly illegal. There are ways to get defeat all their little scams and still use the Fasttrack P2P network. You can try Kazaa Lite, which is Kazaa without the spy/scumware. I'd also recommend using AdAware, a great little program that scans your registry, memory, and hard drives for spy/scum/adware components and gives you the option to delete them.
Using AdAware to delete cydoor.dll will likely leave your P2P client not working. That's where the dummy cydoor.dll comes in. It allows the client to start without providing any of the unwanted cydoor functionality.
For more info on spyware and scumware in general, check out the quite wonderful Counterexploitation site...
Hope this helps... -
w00t, it's already there...Wait until Kazaa Lite is released before you go downloading it. Unfortunately www.kazaalite.com doesn't work any more but doa2.host.sk [doa2.host.sk] (which is where www.k-lite.tk points to) does.
It's there. Here's the link
(note: I hope they survive the slashdotting) -
Don't download it!Obvious point for some, but still I'll make it.

Re:History repeats itselfThis creates a wonderful opportunity. Instead of aiming for 'end users', Linux desktops should aim at amateur developers who want a free and simple workbench for writing the kinds of applications that made Windows 3.1 rule the world.
You are talking about GNUstep. For many years, the OpenStep API and development tools have been far superior to *anything* else in the Windows or UNIX world. The GNUstep project has already got usable alpha clones of the NeXT development tools that are a joy to work with. Take a look at this mail client developed quickly with GNUstep tools. It runs on GNUstep platforms and Mac OS X.
The GNUstep project is actively tracking the additions made to Cocoa (what Apple decided to call OpenStep after buying NeXT).
GNUstep frameworks and applications will build on most UNIXes, on Mac OS X (obviously), and win32 platforms. Support for the GUI backend is Alpha on win32 but is progressing.
GNUstep has a database framework much like NeXT's Enterprise Object Framework and a web development system much like WebObjects. Also available is a 3D framework, music and sound frameworks, a networking framework, an email framework, and others.
Like Apple, you can write your applications in Objective C or Java. Unlike Apple, the GNUstep project provides several other language options: Ruby, Guile, and other scripting languages by way of StepTalk.
