I'd like to add a few details that the author of the story left out. The person who is being harassed is William Scott Lockwood, the webmaster of sites such as http://www.geekizoid.com and http://www.guppylog.com/. The harassment campaign against him has lasted nearly a year, and has included phone calls to his immediate and detached family at night time, including sexual intimidation and death threats, by a group of people or a person calling himself/themselves "The Midnight Phoneboys" and "The Anti-Vlad Triad (AV3)". You may notice that they claimed the first post in this story (at threshold: -1). A few weeks ago, Scott and his antagonists came to an agreement which consisted of a ceasefire, but Scott has gone on to break it (by posting this story) and so have the AV3. The new owners of Scott's accounts (which he forfeited via the agreement) have posted a few insulting things in his name(s), and continue to wage a war of harassment against him, including heavily scripted posting to some forums at the rate of hundreds of posts an hour. Most of the more restrictive additions to Slashdot such as rate limiting of posts, the lameness filter, the images to be parsed on account creation, and the 20-second limit were all responses to the actions of the AV3. In short, this story affects everyone who reads Slashdot, and hopefully these details will allow readers to comment more effectively.

I read an article linked from someone's blog that suggested that the Zone could be achieved by anyone through drilling and training oneself to breath exclusively through the nose (assisted by the use of breathe-right nasal strips). Something to think about while you're gaming. I don't remember where it was linked; I saw it in someone's blog linked from the Is My Blog Hot or Not? page.

I think I managed to achieve the zone, or something like it, once or twice during typing tests in my high school typing class. So it's not beyond the realm of possibility that concentration might have something to do with it too...

I know we watch about 1% of the night-sky for in-bound meteors/comets/etc... which may run the risk of colliding with the Earth, but do we watch the sky for object which could destroy the moon?

I know it's extremely unlikely but, what would happen if the moon were suddenly destroyed? Wouldn't that be nearly as bad as a direct hit with the Earth?

Think about it; no tidal pull to dictate the oceans would mean a serious disruption to the weather systems, possibly even the planet's rotation! I would think a direct hit could be almost a good thing by comparison. After all, it would mean no more BS like this...
