Sensetional article
Lisa Miller have a spiritual agenda.
Here is her TEDx talk about love and stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...
Also this study is in contradiction with this study:
Being Religious or Spiritual Is Linked With Getting More Depressed
http://www.huffingtonpost.co.u...From Lisa Miller:
http://archpsyc.jamanetwork.co...
"We previously reported a 90% decreased risk in major depression, assessed prospectively, in adult offspring of depressed probands who reported that religion or spirituality was highly important to them."From Being Religious or Spiritual Is Linked With Getting More Depressed
"A key finding of the study, conducted in several different counties, is that a spiritual life view predisposed to major depression, especially significantly in the UK, where spiritual participants were nearly three times more likely to experience an episode of depression than the secular group."Lisa Miller have first to explain this contradiction. Maybe some people get cortical thickness from religion, and some don't. I don't have access to Lisa's article.

Minsky (or even Kurzweil) can disagree all he wants, but I've yet to hear of the celebration of truly autonomous first step. One might point at the software that won at jeopardy or the one that beat the Turing test, but did they really 'pick' their own fights, or 'choose' their strategies all by 'themselves'? jeopardy winner: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2011/02/pictures/110217-watson-win-jeopardy-ibm-computer-humans-science-tech-artificial-intelligence-ai/ turing test beater: http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2012/10/01/botprize-2012-programmers_n_1928349.html

Re:Just remember now...
No one is seriously doing that.
Except when they do.
Like when a Lack of snowfall becomes a sign of global warming. Until it gets cold, then cold winter is a sign of global warming. And those are scientists quoted in both those articles, it's not just some 'unscientific journalists.'
Every time some 'weird weather' happens, it's a sign of global warming. If you don't realize this, it's because you aren't paying attention. Hurricane Sandy, Japan Tsunami, whatever it is, you see articles popping up about global warming. The proof is in the absolute fuck-ton of easy to validate wide scale observational data, core sound principles(like absorption spectra of greenhouse gasses), and the staggering accuracy of mainline predictive theories.
The core principles are sound. We know that CO2 can have an effect on the atmosphere. We know that we are releasing CO2 into the atmosphere.
The mainline predictive theories are not staggeringly accurate (as the snow problem in England, mentioned above, shows). As graphs like this and this and this show, it's seeming more and more like the climate change models are overly pessimistic (which of course is a value judgement; if you like warm weather, then you might say they are overly optimistic).
There is also plenty of unscientific behavior among scientists, as the Chris Landsat hurricane situation shows, and the CRU emails show. -
Spyblog's Guide on Whistleblowing Anonymously
In a prelude to the more recent gross attacks on democracy, the US and UK have both been consistently shitting on whistleblowers for many decades.
Snowden's method will probably only work if your leak will make you famous. For everyone else, anonymity would be advised.
The author of Spyblog has been documenting the progress of the UK's seemingly-inexorable descent into a Stasi police state for about 10 years.
In 2006, he started posting tips on whistleblowing. This has since evolved into a more comprehensive website.

Well... the Independent is the newspaper I usually read... here's how they covered the royal christening.
For those who don't know about the UK press, the Independent is generally a centrist broadsheet... perhaps a little left wing, a little libertarian. It's not radical.

Mutual aid
It has been known for some time that the various intelligence agencies of the Anglosphere cooperated on various projects. Common enemies make for common cause. The annual support doesn't appear to be that significant - equivalent to about 10-15% the cost of a Eurofighter Typhoon per year. I have no doubt the support is welcome, but probably not vital. It looks like HM government are prioritizing spending for the intelligence agencies in any event.
George Osborne To Give MI5, MI6 And GCHQ Extra Money, As Other Budgets Are Cut
Chancellor George Osborne will today draw up the battle lines for the next general election as he sets out his final spending plans before the country goes to the polls in 2015....
It is reported that the intelligence agencies - MI5, MI6 and GCHQ - have emerged among the winners in the carve-up of expenditure with a real terms increase of more than 3% - reflecting continuing concerns over the threat of terrorism in the wake of the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby outside Woolwich Barracks, London..
I think there is less mystery here than the death of Gareth Williams and a few others. Williams mystery solved?
Well, here's hoping there will be no more 7/7 events.

Andrew Wakefield and big Pharma..
"No, Andrew Wakefield deserves a good chunk of the blame. He has caused children to die by his self-aggrandising actions, and in a just world would be up on charges for it."
It's curious that the co-author of the original paper, Professor Walker-Smith, was subsequently totally exonerated. Meaning there was nothing in that paper that could be deemed fraudulent or unethical. Wakefield was the victim of a smear campaign by the pharma-industry who stood to lose masses amount of revenue. -
Quelle Surprise
Of course they're at war. This is one of the most incompetent and scientifically illiterate governments in living memory. It's packed full of lunatic ideologues like Ian Duncan Smith and Teresa May who sideline professional academic advice time and time again in favour of their own prejudices stupidity and ignorance. I just wish their misguided, harmful and plain unworkable policies wouldn't wreck this countries social and political fabric for generations to come. It would be funny if the human cost wasn't so high
And you know what? In spite of this, the main opposition is still unable to differentiate itself as a better alternative than this shower of charlatans, bigots and liars.
I despair at this country. I really do. -

"I cannot pick up my Nexus 7 without experiencing problems like a lag of ten seconds, or more, just to rotate the display; touches refusing to acknowledged; stuttering notification panel actions; and unresponsive apps."
And he's not alone. Beneath the piece dozens of Nexus 7 users say they have also experienced issues, while Google's own forums hold similarly dispiriting tales.
"I have all the same exact issues. Horrific lag when doing anything in the browser, any simple multi-tasking, and at least one crash/reboot per hour," said one user, Kunal Patel.

Too generic
I don't believe this is a correct "interpretation" of the message, as it is too generic. Nothing contained in the message is of any use whatsoever. "Hit Jerry’s right or reserve battery here", "Troops, panzers, batteries, engineers, here", "Counter measures against panzers not working", "Go over field notes", "Found headquarters infantry right here"
What good is any of that? Where is "here"? There would have to be precise coordinates or grid numbers to indicate exactly what is where.
The other question is where would the pigeon be delivering this message to? All the way back to some headquarters in Britain is where. In that case the context of the message is even less useful, especially considering there would be a several hour delay before the message could be delivered all the way from France to Britain.
More information on these sites, includes the various "decoded" phrases.

Local government abusing its tools?
Give them guns to defend against terrorist threats, and in short order these guns will find their way in to traffic control and refuse collection enforcement. Same with laws and procedures introduced ostensibly to keep us safe from rage-fueled inadequate virgins.
This isn't just a local council thing. Take the BBC as an example. Laws, such as RIPA, are sold as being essential for tackling serious crime and terrorism. Transpires that it's pretty useful for tackling TV licence evasion.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/08/22/ripa_bigbrotherwatch/
Laws and processes need to be way more specific in scope. No point in trying to punish abuse if the guidelines aren't already clear. Where they are clear, personal accountability must be seen to happen. I generally don't blame individuals. Give a man a hammer, with poor oversight, and it's not surprising every problem becomes a nail. I think most of us have skirted policy or the law a little for the sake of expediency - even just simple shit like failing to take a legally mandated break. Better oversight and transparency is needed. When a state body intercepts communication or otherwise spies on people, make the numbers and reasons available. Some of this already happens if people bother to make a Freedom of Information Act request. That's assuming it isn't buried in an exemption. Revealing such activities could of course be undesirable for two reasons:
1) It allows criminals to better understand the tactics being used.
2) It would expose the wasteful use of these procedures and their application in petty matters.

You are so cute indeed
0. I did not say that Israel wasn't war-torn. However, it would be rather ridiculous to compare the level of devastation to that of Gaza.
And you somehow think that Hamas didn't know that before it attacked. In a way, you're far worse than the Israeli. The Israeli know they are dealing with adults capable of thinking this through, and they respond accordingly. You, on the other hand, think these people are children that can't think for themselves, that somehow don't realize that they're starting a war.
1. The stronger, richer party ALWAYS have a far bigger responsibility.
That's just stupid. So if you do anything to make the life of a street beggar (plenty of those in America) less than ideal, you can be blamed for that ? You are certainly the richer, stronger party and you could do something. And of course, the mere fact that they exist, and that you're richer is proof that you're "holding them down", right ?
This is a moronic way to think about the world.
2. And how about NOT slowly invading your neighbours? Could that perhaps cool stuff down?
3. So you mean that the Jews have a right to live and need for more room. I recognize that reasoning. Now who was it that said that? Can't remember? Anyway, I think he called it "Lebensraum", or something to that effect. Probably was a nice guy, too.
He did not say that. He only said he wanted to keep what they have, where he has lived since he was born. Which I believe translates to the Allied position, not the Axis one.
But wait ! I know ! Let's make people leave areas they have conquered
... of course ... muslims conquered palestine too (and Jews didn't, read up on history, they actually bought it). For that matter Europeans conquered Europe, Americans conquered America, ... so let's force all muslims into the tiny town they originate from, and let's move the entirety of Europe into Mongolia ! Because that "is more fair".Sounds stupid, doesn't it ? That's because it is stupid.
4.
Why can't the Palestinians go live in some other part of the Muslim world? 1.2 billion of them and they can't find homes? Jews want a homeland too, and Israel is ours. They have enough fucking countries of their own. It's not our fault if none of them can put together a decent economy or political structure. Saudi Arabia has plenty of space, and the government there gets just as much support from the US as we do.
Muslims just want the Palestinians to suffer so they have someone to claim they are fighting for when they blow up towers in New York.
Have nothing to say about this, really. Just wanted to repeat it because it is so incredibly stupid and uninsightful.
:-)It's also true. The vast, vast majority of Palestinians are immigrants (this is beyond obvious if you visit one of their towns. Btw, do that. Not at night, and not in Gaza though. You might develop an informed opinion). Egypt, not Israel, closes off the border, and not due to Israeli pressure. Saudi arabia regularly uses Gaza and the westbank to dump refugees arriving on their shores (ever wonder why a country that lies less than 100 km from Africa seems to receive exactly zero refugees from Africa when Italy, 400 km away from the nearest shore, receives over 1000 monthly ?)
Also, Palestine receives > $1000 per head in foreign aid per month, close to $3.5 billion per year, from the West alone (and I'm sure Saudi Arabia matches that). They receive this because of their wars, their terrorism, their attacks, because of the rockets, and because the muslim-everyone else conflicts they constantly cause. That is their economy, that is their o

"Primarily due to the lowering of the annual unit sales forecast for PCs, sales are expected to be lower than the May
forecast. Due to the above-mentioned decrease in sales and the impact of unfavorable exchange rates, operating
results are expected to be significantly below the May forecast. Due to the consolidation of Sony Mobile, sales
are expected to increase significantly year-on-year. Operating results are expected to deteriorate significantly
year-on-year primarily due to the large remeasurement gain recorded in the prior fiscal year for Sony Mobile.
On a pro forma basis, had Sony Mobile been fully consolidated from the beginning of the previous fiscal year, a
significant increase in sales and a significant improvement in operating results would be anticipated."That right ladies and gentleman Android is profitable for Sony, Microsoft Windows isn't!!

It's possible to be raped by someone you previously had consensual sex with.
Yes. It's quite a bit harder to make such a distinction when the alleged occurrence happens the same night, without having even left the bed yet from the former undisputed consensual liaison. I believe that comes close to the colloquial trope "lovemaking session".
Oh, and she continued to engage with Julian on subsequent occasions. She was certainly not in a position of personal, economic or social dependance on Assange. Actually, quite the reverse.
There is ample room to see how this has been manipulated politically. Especially when you get to the UK -- who won't even extradite SHAWN SULLIVAN, America's "Most Wanted Paedophile" to the US!
Two judges sitting in London allowed an appeal against extradition by fugitive Shawn Sullivan, 43, after the American authorities refused to give an assurance that he would not be placed on a controversial sex offenders treatment programme in Minnesota.
But go after Assange! Hey! That evil rapist deserves to be blackened in the news over this Sullivan character!

No, he did not make any threats. You clearly didn't actually read the article. Threats of violence actually are NOT enough to lead to arrest, but asshole-ish tweets are. Read the article before posting such crap.
I can't believe I'm linking to The Huffington Post as a better source but for lack of any other site that is explaining it better, here's a timeline of the tweets.
Here's the tweet in question:

It is listed in the Guardian article but doesn't say it's from the arrested suspect.
The arrest is clearly on the grounds of grammatical error: after "twat", the tweet in question used "your", where he should have used "you're". The Metropolitan Police is rather rigid these days, and sensitive to grammatical abuse.

Once a threat against a person is made, the police can be called to investigate it more. This is what has happened, they've arrested the guy to question him.
He hasn't so far been charged, nor has the case matured in any way and been passed to the CPS to decide whether to prosecute.
At the time the tweets were made, the police don't know if it's a bad-mouthing 17 year old boy, or someone nearing a personal "John Holmes" moment.

Attacks on skeptics were personal and vindictive, not only here on Slashdot, but on every blog, mailing list, or news feed where the issue came up. For what ever reason, the politically correct line hasn't wavered much (other than changing the terminology from Global Warming to Climate Change), but at least articles like the cited one get a) published and b) covered, where as they were often frozen out of publications or discussion in the past. The discussion is changing, but the the politics are still in attack mode.

Evolution doesn't have a value system that prefers education, a comfortable life, or the ability to exist without government help. Personifying the inherently unthinking force of evolution, we might say that evolution cares about exactly one thing: the number of creatures in the Nth generation with similar DNA.
Exactly, this is the evolutionary winner of this generation. Only the passing of the genes matter, doesn't even matter if it's a rape victim unless she gets an abortion or the child is killed. The genes will live on to try reproducing again while those who didn't reproduce won't.

Succession dispute in Beijing.
A vague rumor of "Military vehicles in Beijing" is a bit much. At least one web site is pairing that rumor with a stock shot of Chinese tanks on parade. The crackdown was a dumb move that gave the rumor credibility.
There is something big going on, though. China is about to have a major change in leadership, but China doesn't have an reliable way to pick its national leaders. There's a power struggle within the Party each time this happens. It's only happened three times since Mao, and the first two produced the Great Leap Forward disaster and the Cultural Revolution. The third, in 1992, went smoothly. Governments all over the world are watching this closely. Nobody knows who will be running China a year from now.
This year, seven of the nine Standing Committee members are retiring. One of the anointed successors, Bo Xilai, has been arrested on murder charges. This has thrown the succession process into confusion. The South China Morning Post (out of Hong Kong) says this was a "liberal coup". This followed rumors of a coup last month, a coup which didn't happen. (In general, coups that are predicted don't happen - they require surprise.)
The Chinese government is desperately trying to prevent public involvement in the succession process. China does not have real elections. So "public involvement" means riots or civil wars. Historically, those have changed governments. So the Party is trying to keep the lid on.

Re:Rupert Murdoch has no scruples.
I remember hearing years ago a similar story about murdoch doing something similar to canal+
Apparently a lab in israel was used to peel back the masks and investigate the canal+ cards the crypto was reverse engineered and cams released and keys released. Which meant it was very easy to access canal+ with softcams for a good few years. I think that it was traced back and it allegedly was down to murdoch trying to bankrupt canal+ who didn't want to use sky's encryption methods.Well colour me surprised sounds like it is the same case after all, resurrected after all these years
no wonder it sounded so familiar. -
