Re:How is this news?
Ironic, really, that the whole point of Trusted Computing is that the person doing the computing cannot be trusted...
Not ironic at all. It's the computer that is Trusted in that phrase, not the user.
Nor is it the user doing the trusting.
"And now, folks, it's time for, `Who do you trust?' Hubba, hubba, hubba! Money, money, money! Who do you trust? Me? I'm giving away free money. And where is the Batman? He's at home, washing his tights!"

Good news everybody!
Now we don't have to do it the old fashioned way.

Re:LexisNexis Search?
After watching the 911 truth movement pull together massive amounts of correlations based of basically nothing I am in awe of the human ability to rationalize correlations.

Re:Dragged along for the ride
The cynic in me can't help but agree with you, but this is the first "evidence" I've seen that such a thing can even work consistently. Given, these are all "staged" successes, but I have to admit that I am now a little more convinced that someday the USA could shoot down a few of those Chinese / Russian / Pakistani(?) nukes in an incoming ICBM attack.
Also, WarGames was being shown on the big screen for it's 25th anniversary here recently, which reminded me that "close" only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades and global thermonuclear war. -
Re:Obama's shady dealings?
Not that I agree with you, but you remind me of this line from Head Office (1985):
Jane Caldwell: Don't fall for it, Jack.
Jack Issel: Fall for what?
Jane Caldwell: For the lie we keep telling ourselves. We do the dirty stuff to get the power. It'll give us all the good things we really want. Then we get the power, we can't even remember what goddamn thing what it was we wanted it for in the first place. -
Re:Not Patriotism... Money [Don't watch!]
It's the money many press/media outlets have already invested in getting over there and positioning their people to get the best coverage. NBC Sports would continue Olympic coverage even if Chinese soldiers were making a public show of bludgeoning dissidents to death in the street.
It's one thing to broadcast it... it's another thing entirely if no one watches.
I won't be watching, but then NBC (and the other useless US networks) already know I don't watch their programming from reviewing the channel history right off my cable converter box.
Supporting events in China is a no-brainer to fail miserably, especially given the Nielson ratings from Italy in 2006, and declining numbers since 1984.
This years Olympic trial numbers from NYT
2006 numbers from Italy.
Here's an article which details exactly how much money was spent by NBC in Athens (2004), for less than 20% ROI.
An article from 2000 (Summer) shows the olympics averaged 13.3 and Sunday Night Football (in the SUMMER!) got a 10.3. -

Hollywood Rendition
I got my family to watch the ABC special on TV tonight. What an amazing and inspirational story!
My wife and I agree that they should make a Hollywood rendition of his life story and that Jim Carrey (from his more dramatic roles like The Truman Show) should play the part of Prof Pausch. There's an amazing resemblance in both their appearance and facial expressions as well as their desire to have fun.
Prof. Pausch, your memory will live on after you. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. Excellent "head fakes". -

Re:Cool
They did, at least cinematically. What could possibly go wrong?
-
Re:It may be very cool
Amazing. A reference to a relatively mindless comedy (Austin Powers) gets modded up, while a reference to a really good geek movie (Real Genius) gets modded down as off topic. *sigh* Kids with mod points, I tell ya.... Bets on whether the person who modded the parent down had been born yet when this movie came out?

Re:Then What Do We Nuke?
Damn. Shows you are getting too old when nobody gets your pop culture references anymore. I feel like Grandpa Simpson getting the blank stares when he mentions Benny Goodman. See this to find out what the old guy was talking about. I guess I'll have to get me a cane and start whacking at you darned kids when you pass by. And get off my lawn!

Re:Definition of 'wet'?
Havent you been watching? Its the giant alien technology reactor that needs a human hand to activate it to terraform the planet by melting all the stored Ice thats conveniently located next to the colony!

Not a lot of tricking required ...
the metric is not how good a movie is, but rather, how effectively they can trick people into seeing a really bad movie.
Another option is to lower your movie budget to the point where different economics come into play. From the Disaster Movie FAQ:
Q: Why do these movies keep getting made? A: Even though the "Movie" series has been grossing less and less at the box office, these "films" for lack of a better term cost next to nothing to make and we won't see the end of them until one grosses less than it cost to make.

I always wanted to make an iPhone call from 1000 feet deep. Of course, that big air thingy sticking in my mouth is kind of a hinderance, but go technology!
Just be careful with the underwater aliens

Where is Jubilee?
Looking at the cast I'm disappointed there is no Jubilee. She was always one of my favourites in the solo Wolverine comic.
-
Re:Leaked trailers
Oh, and the trailer (what I could make out of it) looks pretty damned good.
From what I could see, it looks decent. There are a lot of characters from the comics making an appearance, including gambit and what looks like juggernaut. Wolverine's origin is one of the better comics that I've read, and they got Hugh Jackman back.
The things that worry me are Gavin Hood directing and how badly they messed up the last movie. From his imdb page, it looks like he's extremely inexperienced. -
Re:Leaked trailers
Actually, I recall watching a "leaked" copy of The Devil's Rejects (it may have been House of 1000 Corpses, but I'm 75% sure it was Rejects). It was obviously a well-placed tripod at a private screening (nice theater, small screen relative to multiplexes) - Crystal clear audio. The interesting thing was that, at the very start, there was some ass-hole with a cowboy hat blocking part of the screen. He stood up during the opening credits and walked out of the theater. I don't know for certain that it was Rob Zombie, but it sure as hell looked like him when you caught his profile.

Re:I wonder....
Does anyone else wonder why they chose Hugh Jackman again?
because he is a producer of the film? -
Re:How do you know what a good movie?
Another problem is that the general public also doesn't know what a "good movie" is.
I bet you more people saw the godawful Batman & Robin (to date, the only movie I've walked out of) in the theater than Blade Runner.
I wanted to point out what an ignorant statement that was - I sure as hell never wasted my time with Batman and Robin and I thoroughly enjoyed Blade Runner. So, I went after some numbers to shut down that disgusting and spurious statement of yours.
Unfortunately, it appears that you're not only right [B&R link], but really distressingly right [BR link]. Although (based on my rough interpretation on the rather odd box office numbers for BR and [falsely] assuming that the re-releases were free to the studio), it appears that Blade Runner was eventually profitable while Batman and Robin cost the studio almost $20M.
What a world...

and why not protect jobs?Yep, protect jobs.
.The estimated production budget for the The Dark Knight is $180 million USD.
--- of which very big chunks went straight into a geek's paycheck:
"Where does he get all those wonderful toys?"
Productions on this scale employ - and credit - hundreds of artists and craftsman. Do you see that kind of public recognition of your work?
The opening weekend grossed $158 million USD from 4,366 screens. The Dark Knight: Business and Box Office
One the sidelines, that is a mega-ton of sales in popcorn and cola.
The Batman franchise alone is worth billions.
--- most of which will ultimately come to rest in the big electoral states of California, Florida and New York - or at least make a stop or two there along the way.
This is where the movies are financed, produced and marketed. This is where they build the theme parks.
Who do you think all the kind folks who live in these states are going to vote for in November? The eternal sophomore who wants his free movie fix? Or the Senator talking up clean industries, skilled labor, export dollars?

Re:Can it be time?
Intelligent people have better health care and better resources making them more likely to reproduce and afford more children.
Clearly you've never watched Idiocracy. The idea is that the intelligent people in society delay having children in order to focus on their careers. The problem is that they never get around to having those kids. Meanwhile the trailer-trash have tons of kids. Fast forward a thousand years and you end up with a society of idiots.

Re:200MB?
Which is only 5.8 hours of film, assuming 24 frames per second. That would definitely fit the entire movie, but it would be nowhere close to all the footage that was shot. It's not like all movies are filmed like Russian Ark.
-
Re:Can it be time?
"I think the human race, at least in the developed world, is selecting for intelligence."
You, sir, are outcho goddammed mind.
The intelligent people in developed countries are being outbred by the people of lower intelligence.
I know it is not science, but sheesh, haven't you seen Idiocracy? -
Re:Huh?
I believe that humans are born with the ability to distinguish right from wrong, good from evil -- a moral heart. It is only by ignoring our very nature that we learn to become the amoral, uncaring individuals which now appear to be the majority here in North America.
Greed is good. I GOTTA GO MAKE THE BENJAMINS!!!!
THAT'S the problem in a nutshell.
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Re:Moonwalker
I can possibly beat that. This was probably not a wise thing to watch at 12 years old. Ah, but the memories though; you can't buy those.

Re:Right.
Spending time and resources on a system to FORCE obedience to the rule is inherently wrong, and is DEFINITELY Orwellian. Lets start focusing on teaching our kids to NOT CHEAT instead of expending so much time and so many resources in an effort to force them to comply. For those who still do cheat, life will ultimately expose them for the stupid jackass they are.
So would you consider cops enforcing legal compliance with your local legal code to be Orwellian? BTW, as far as we can tell, being a jackass is no barrier to living. Movies have been made with just that as a title, and it did SO well, there was a sequel...
Some people don't give a rat's kazoo what others think as long as they get "theirs". Exposing folks like that as a jackass does very little to change their behavior; they think they're in the right. Penalizing them for said jackassery, however, might get better results...

So Verne Troyer is an alien!

Re:What's with this news?
Meanwhile it seems that the web is ahead of the curve. A story about ATM scammers implanting an Asus Eee PC in an ATM to record card information is followed by information on where to find deals on Asus Eee PCs.
No links on where to buy blank credit cards though. But according to this movie novelty cards, magnetic tape, and glue work just as well.

Re:Moonwalker
And yet, that movie wasn't nearly as traumatizing as Firewalker.
