The plaintiffs are intense morons
Suing people with limited means for their free expression is, I believe, the way of getting every pro-bono civil liberties lawyer in the country on their case.
When Soderberg finishes the true-to-life movie, they'll probably sue him for the grosses.

a-team movie
Hey, good idea!
Oh for the love of sanity, PLEASE, NO!
That show was a steaming pile of crap back when my step-brother use to watch it on TV. There's no way they're going to make it any better. I'd rather watch Britney try to sing the blues. (If somebody provides a link of Britney singing the blues, I'm deleting my slashdot account) -

Re:Prostitute? In Korea? I can't imagine. . .
prostitute? in korea? U can't imagine. . . me want you long time! nuther words, nuthin but there.
This oft sampled quote (me so horny, me love you long time) is originally from Kubrick's (rip) classic Full Metal Jacket, a film which brilliantly and disturbingly explores a dichotomy (perhaps even the dichotomy) inherent in human nature. It's set during the Vietnam "conflict" (heh) era. The plot events take place in a marine boot camp preparing infantry for deployment to Vietnam and shortly after, in the country itself. It has absolutely nothing to do with Korea or the US-Korean involvement of the 50s.
But please, don't let such trivial details stop your asian generalizations.

Let me tell you about fluoridation, Mandrake
General Jack D. Ripper: Mandrake, do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk... ice cream. Ice cream, Mandrake, children's ice cream.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Lord, Jack.
General Jack D. Ripper: You know when fluoridation first began?
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: I... no, no. I don't, Jack.
General Jack D. Ripper: Nineteen hundred and forty-six. Nineteen forty-six, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Uh, Jack, Jack, listen, tell me, tell me, Jack. When did you first... become... well, develop this theory?
General Jack D. Ripper: Well, I, uh... I... I... first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.
General Jack D. Ripper: Yes, a uh, a profound sense of fatigue... a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I... I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: Hmm.
General Jack D. Ripper: I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women uh... women sense my power and they seek the life essence. I, uh... I do not avoid women, Mandrake.
Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: No.
General Jack D. Ripper: But I... I do deny them my essence.
Copied gratuitiously from the IMDB Memorable Quotes section. So you see, it's not a US plot. It's a commie plot. -
Re:Matrix?
Or Strange Days, which could be considered a (lose) remake of Brainstorm.
Well, actually the article focusses on intercepting the sensoric data and making sense of it. I believe scientists have for some time been able to make sense of the basic sensoric data; stuff like using a cat's eye to produce webcam quality images. This research seems directed at interpreting the signals at a much deeper level.
Though very interesting, it's still a one-way extraction process (ie. *not* synthesis) which is just completely unrelated to anything i saw in The Matrix, but I may have stumbled into an excuse to view that movie again ;-) -
Matrix?
The article reads more like they are reverse engineering pattern recongition systems as the brain sees and interperates objects, which sounds closer to the movie Brainstorm.

IMDb prior art
Well I was thinking, what about prior art? So IMDB came to mind. Where the public has been building this huge database over almost 2 decades, starting way back on USENET. So at least IMDB ought to be able to kick amazon's ass in the courts....Here's a history.
http://www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?history
Because of its growth out of the Usenet community, the mission statement to provide it for free to the users of the internet, and the strong anti-commercial sentiments as more corporate traffic and advertising moved online, deciding to turn the IMDb into a business was a very tough and debated decision. But the need to be able to support its growth, compete with new commercial projects and control its destiny made it obvious that the IMDb would have to incorporate. In late 1995 the decision was made to incorporate and in January of 1996 the IMDb was incorporated as became Internet Movie Database, Ltd.
So, commercial, but not yet pure evil.
Well, talk of the devil..... fast forward to 1998....
In Jeff Bezos, the people at the IMDb saw a kindred spirit, someone who understood the internet and its community, not just its potential as a marketplace, and thus when Jeff's people at amazon.com contacted them, they were willing to listen. What they heard was amazing, essentially "we want you to keep doing what you're doing."

Re:They better stop the riots all rightThe rest of the world are a majority that belives that the US believed that WMD existed?
Perhaps if by "world" you mean America. It's pretty obvious to anyone who does a bit of research that the US never really cared if Iraq had WMD or not, just that they could justify that as a reason for invasion. You might want to look at this doco. Of course, GWB himself was probably clueless to the real truth, but who even believed that he really runs the show anyway?

Re:A Natural Rights perspective
If I let you into my house yesterday, you have no right to be here today
While you may be correct WRT US property laws, it seems to me that vampire rules call for a vampire to have free reign over your house in perpetuity if they are ever invited in. Perhaps Sony is operating using Vapire law rather than US law?

Re:Ethnically segregated?Yes, that's what it is. When you don't have a job and get money from the gov, the gov choose the place to put you. Now, it's no ownership, you don't own that house. In fact, the HLM (low cost habitations, kind of big '70s buildings with as many as 300 people sometimes in them) are owned by the government, and they put you there. That's it. You have no word, unless you get a job. And you cannot get a job, because no one will give you one.
Now, the problem can be hard to catch for americans, since the heavily-socialist tendencies of the France history, culture and government are somewhat very different from the american point of view (neutral here, i'm not saying yankees are stupid or wrong or whatever). In the '50s, and during the Algeria war, France opened its frontier to rapatriate (sp?) french maghrebians (north african, mostly Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Moritania and Lybia) and offered them a lot of jobs (no kidding) with good money. They were built new cities (mostly HLMs) to live in, were mixed with white people, no problem till their children were born. When the new generation came (less than 25 y.o), they didn't have much choice because the situation inversed. Most of them are Frenchborn, never saw their fathers country (lack of money at first), were isolated from the rest of the population (due to white french moving to better places for their jobs, and racism accounted a lot too) and were given no choice as to what to do: nothing. Reputable colleges didn't accept them, some big industries were built not far in the neighbourhood but didn't hire them (no kiding) even those who had qualifications, scholarships were heavily reduced, their colleges were really bad, violence were higher and higher, and so on and so on.
So most don't work, and live where they were told to, and even those who want to get out (some rare ones do) have a really really hard way to go.
For a good reference, see Matthieu Kassovitz' La Haine (imdb). I think it has been translated in english (someone can confirm?).

I think people should watch a film called la haine to get some type of concept of what things are like out in france.
the film was banned in france because it was so truefull about what type of stuff goes on.

Re:Ma 6-T a cra-cke;
Of course, 10 tons of flax will do it for anything. But I was making a reference to the French movie Ma 6-T Va Cra-cker (literally, "My City Will Crack"). One of the main story in the film is a large riot with plenty of burned cars and molotovs in a Paris suburb, caused by the death of a teenager by the cops. It was made in 1997. So even in '97, the situation was similar to today's. Nothing has changed.

<Nerd Mode>
Not entirely offtopic. It's a reference to Donnie Darko, you'd have to watch it to understand - It's supposed to be funny. The parent failed, however, because he didn't get the facts right (Frank is a "manipulated dead", Donnie is the one who can open portals), and if he had, it wouldn't be funny either (because then it wouldn't fit with the Grand parents' post)

Blogspotting
This reminds me of something...
Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and dental insurance. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that? I chose not to choose life. I chose somethin' else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who needs reasons when you've got blogs?

GNAA pledges aid to Katrina victimsGNAA pledges aid to Katrina victims
Associated Press, September 11 2005In an early-morning press conference, reclusive GNAA president timecop declared that the Gay Nigger Association of America will contribute to hurricane Katrina disaster relief efforts. He issued a statement describing the efforts being undertaken to rush relief to New Orleans' former residents, many of whom are black, gay, or both. "My heart tears at the sight of so many flooded niggers", timecop said.
The GNAA is contributing a currently-unknown quantity of sperm, intended to prevent starvation and malnutrition. The sperm is to be delivered this Monday to shelters across the nation. "We are having a non-stop wankathon. I believe we can do this, I believe in my niggas. We will not fail to feed NOLA's hungry refugees." Many have reporters present at the conference questioned the nutritional value of the semen being collected, eliciting angry stares and lip-licking from their host. timecop did not directly answer the questions, saying "Who the hell are you? I don't see you vigorously beating off to save the niggers!"
The next item on the list was free wireless internet spanning the Southern Louisiana region, allowing access to GNAA's Lastmeasure online service. Lastmeasure is provided free of charge. It is widely touted as "better than FEMA" in the charitable relief field. Lastmeasure surpasses FEMA's disaster aid service by being accessible to any graphical browser on any operating system. Lastmeasure will be the only website available, as all other http requests will be redirected. This measure is intended to minimize use of GNAA.net wireless for other than disaster-relief LM. The conference ended with an emotional outburst from GNAA president timecop, crying out, "so many dead, rotting black shits".

Sudden Appearances/DisappearancesIndeed, that was a very creepy level. For me, the scariest bits were were things flitted from one corridor to the other, but weren't there when you arrived at the corridor itself. I think F.E.A.R. may have gotten some of its ideas from there.
That said, after watching House on Haunted Hill (no, not the lousy sequel), anyone else think a game based on that would be interesting? Random creepy things happening, but you're armed with a gun that has a limited number of bullets and you can't shoot innocent guests who startle you. The game is randomized as to which events might actually be real encounters so you have to wait to see if something is really attacking you rather than shooting at the first thing that moves.

"Assignment: Earth" aired in March of 1968. Production was in 1967 (I think). By that time, Teri Garr had appeared in many roles.

Re:It's a leftist's dream come true
You can't say that New York was completely unplanned.
The grid system of Manhattan was a deliberate attempt to avoid the crazy street layouts of Europe.
Central Park was created before the proper city extended that far north. http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1286521
Planning for New York's City Water Tunnel #3 started in 1954, construction began in the 1970s, and the current completion date is 2020.http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/news/3rdtunn el.html
and there are places like the Five Points that have been wiped out, unplanned districts can become slums.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Points_(Ma nhattan)
