Clockwork Orange?
No, sir, that was a series of clips from a much more famous movie. It's mostly famous within film geek circles, though, so I took it as something of an in-joke. You see the famous baby-carriage-falling-down-steps scene spoofed all over, like in The Untouchables and Brazil (directed by fellow Pythoner Terry Gilliam). And there's this one close-up of maggot-infested meat that reminds me of the high-resolution gross-out insets in old Ren & Stimpy cartoons. (There goes the rest of my hyphen allowance.)
BTW, the original was silent, and I don't think Beethoven's 9th was what Eisenstein had in mind! -
Re:How the hell did they get
To quote (as best I can) Eric Idle:
"John Cleese used to say he'd do anything for money, so I offered him a pound to shut up. He took it."
At one time or another in his life, he's done just about everything - movies, TV, books, stage performances, the list goes on - brilliantly. As much as I'd like to see him chained to a desk and forced to write more of my favorite stuff, I think he's earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants for a quid... even crap movies like this. -

Look at the list of guest characters. Episode 8, Father's Day, features a Steve Tyler. I bet he's Rose's dad.

Re:How aboutWell, the key point of demolition man was not that they freeze criminals, it's that they subject the prisoners to personality altering technology which takes a very long time to be effective, therefore they have to be frozen.
It was kind of a throwback to the book that Demolition Man is inspired by, "A Brave New World". Yes, you heard me, the classic Alderous Huxley book. In the book, people were preconditioned to like certain roles during their embronic and growth phases.
If you still doubt me on the "based on" bit, consider this. Sandra's character was called "Lenina Huxley", and the main female lead was called Lenina. She says in the film "John, you're a savage", a nod towards John Savage. Snipes says as some point "It's a brave new world". Here's the trivia page on the movie.
I actually quite like the flick, though to be honest I like any future imagary, whether it's a utiopia or distopia. The prospect of hibernation is interesting. If you could be frozen for 40-50 years, I'd do it just to see the gadgets everyone was carrying!
;-) Seriously though, it's worth a thought, you get to see how things turn out. -

Re: not quite true
It is even possible to make faithful movie adaptations of books that at first glance seem impossible to translate to film. Example: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Yes the movie was a box office bomb, but it was a very faithful translation of Hunter S. Thompson's ideas.
What did this movie have in common with Fight Club, American Psycho and Trainspotting (which are all great adaptations in my opinion)? A voice over by a narrator.
This is something that can really make or break a movie version of a book - especially if the book was written in the first person -
Re:Fun Game!
I like it too, and also like the original version of The Office.
I especially like the early episodes. Those were, by far, the best of the bunch!
You know the ones I mean... Back when the show was called "Made in Canada" ... and that wraps up another Hollywood Minute. :)
(Ah, crap... two obscure pop-culture references in one post. This thing will be modded into offtopic oblivion in no time. Oh well. Burn, karma, burn!) -
Hardwired wouldn't have sucked AS BADLY.
I, Robot didn't suck. It just had absolutly nothing to do with the book. I bet your opinion of it would be a lot higher if they had stuck with the original title, "Hardwired".
Yes, our opinion would be different if they had refrained from RAPING ASIMOV'S CORPSE!
That's going a little too far. While I'd agree the movie is a travesty demonstrating that Hollywood is hard pressed to produce even one new idea in almost a hundred years, some of the dangers the movie obsessed over were at least hinted at in Asimov's works. That there is some gold dust sprinkled on, however, does not change that what you have stepped in is primarily a turd. If they had left the original "Hardwired" title in, and yanked the attempts to exploit Asimov's name, it would merely be bad; if such had been offered on DVD free with a box of cereal, I'd have bought the box provided I wasn't allergic to the cereal. (Five brand name candidates, last I counted.)
As is... I took different measures.
Then again, I haven't seen it
Given my respect for film, I didn't want to trash the movie without seeing it. On the other hand, if it was as bad as reported, I didn't want any of my money going anywhere near the people responsible. So when the DVD came out, for my first and only time for a Hollywood release, I downloaded BitTorrent, found a pirate torrent, and tied up my DSL for two days. If it was any good, I would have bought it. After watching it, I deleted it. I have better uses for the 5GB of storage.
Having seen it, the only reason I feel that the time spent watching it was not completely wasted is that I can say with a clear concience: It is a Piece of Crap; Someone Please Buy Harlan Ellison The Movie Rights.
The HHGTTG movie sounds bad, but not that bad. I might catch a matinee... but I'll bring a towel to wrap around my head, just in case it's worse than I expect.

Re:Loved the books, but as a movie?
Yes, by all means... The BBC TV production has been one of my all-time favorite videos/DVDs. I always loved the quirky BBC special effects and the actors who played them.
Douglas Adams actually Created the Arthur Dent role with Simon Jones in mind... He played Arthur in the 1981 miniseries and in both of the BBC Radio Series'
Also, Peter Jones (the voice of the book), Mark Wing-Davey (Zaphod) and Stephen Moore (Marvin) were all in both the Miniseries and the two Radio Series'.
I'll be in the cinema on the first 29th to watch the movie, and I'll probably buy the DVD, but I doubt it will supplant the Cheezy, low-budget 1980's BBC production I've come to know and love.
The Guide sequences in the miniseries were perfection itself, and I really do wonder how they'll improve upon them.
Also, Also, Keep in mind that the HHGTTG was a BBC radio show first (1978 & 1980), then a Novel (1979), and then a TV series (1981). Throughout the three, Adams was fairly Consistent with most of the story... The Second Radio Series actually went off in quite a different direction than the books did, but it all fits together somewhere into a single big timeline somewhere in my brain.
Also, Also, Also, In my poking around, I noticed that BBC Radio 4 is currently doing a THIRD radio series. Must...find...way...to...acquire...

I once took a date, who was into arty foreign films, to a movie called "Burnt By the Sun" [...] I was apologizing profusely for taking her to such an awful movie.
I'm sorry you didn't like Burnt by the Sun, but quite a few people consider it a classic. If your date liked "arty foreign films", I'm surprised she didn't like it.
It's not exactly light, though. If you're in the mood for something like ND, then BBTS would not be a good film to see. -
GNAAGNAA 9/11 COMISSION REACHES STARTLING CONCLUSION
GNAA 9/11 COMISSION REACHES STARTLING CONCLUSIONOn Monday, August 2nd 2004, the GNAA (Gay Nigger Association of America) 9/11 commission will release its report on the events of September 11th, 2001 and the utter, Rucas-esque failure of the government and GNAA's military to prevent, handle, or cover up the attack. In a press conference this morning, GNAA president timecop released the shocking conclusion of the report.
"lol, jews did wtc," said GNAA president timecop before spraying his viral Gaynigger seed all over a crowd of reporters.
This conclusion is in direct contradiction to the US Senate report that "lol sandniggers did wtc" that was released just a short time ago.
GNAA spokesnigger Penisbird held a press conference this morning where he was quoted as saying "It is obvious why the Senate 9/11 Commission failed it so badly: the presence of known Juden Joe Lieberman on the panel." This obvious conflict of interests went unreported by most major news sources because of the open anti-GNAA slant of almost every major organization.
Although the GNAA Commission still has more work to do, the apparent ringleader was Federal Reserve Chairjew Alan Greenspan. Greenspan has been quoted as saying that he supports a smaller economy in which he is the ultimate master. Destroying the WTC was just the first step in what appears to be a grand scheme to shrink the US economy to the size of his shriveled circumcised penis.
President timecop stated that he supports a strong dollar to keep gold jewelry (a staple of niggers) prices low.
Another conclusion of the panel was that the ops of #Politics played a pivotal role in the success of the attack. The usually miserly organization gave $2,000,000 to help fund the effort. They then continued with their unwavering aid to Jews by spreading false evidence that led others to believe that a bunch of sand niggers committed the attack. GNAA has promised a strong retaliation against #Politics.
John Rockecenter was unavailable for comment at this time.

RKZ ONCE AGAIN- SUCK IT #BUTTSGNAA Announces Project to Port Slashcode to ASP.NET
GNAA Announces Project to Port Slashcode to ASP.NETFremont, California - In a surprise announcement, GNAA has announced a truce and alliance with the popular news for trolls website Slashdot.
GNAA member godspeed broke the news at an early-evening press conference, announcing that GNAA would cease trolling the website, and will instead work with the current Slashdot staff on porting the Slashcode to ASP.NET, to be run under IIS.
"We've had our difference with Slashdot in the past," godspeed began, "but with recent slowdowns in performance on the website, they have finally realized that Opensource is indeed dead, and it's time to move on and replace their antiquated codebase with something that will meet the modern day's needs. We're pleased to be given the opportunity to work with the Slashdot staff on making this port. Of course, the new code will not be opensourced, an NDA will be signed in blood by all who see it and if you release it, the penalty... well, you've seen what happened to Nick Berg, Paul Johnson, and the others. Major changes to be implemented include the removal of goatse link evasion, major overhauls to the karma system, and the replacement of pinkpages with LastMeasure,"
At this point godspeed turned the podium over to fellow GNAA member goat-see and stormed out of the room. goat-see offered to take any questions the audiencemembers have. When asked why there were no Slashdot representatives at the conference, he was quick to reply "You can speak to CowboyNeal outside after we're through here, we couldn't get that motherfucker in here without widening the doorframes. Next question?," eliciting a hearty chuckle from the audience. When asked the reason for the sudden change in relations with Slashdot, goat-see paused to think for a moment, before answering "Our historical differences were meant to hilight the flaws in the Slashdot system. As soon as the staff realized what an impacted shitpile their site was and the need to update it, we were the first to volunteer to assist in the migration. We look forward to seeing the hight performace of ASP.NET pages with a MS SQL backend as much as any other nigger out there."
bare, a GNAA member sitting in the audience, stood up and confirmed this announcement with a hearty "LOL." goat-see concluded the conference at that point, saying "If you have any further questions, please direct them to new GNAA member Wil Wheaton, now let's all go outside and poke that fat fuck CowboyNeal with sticks."

lol @ #buttesGNAA Mourns Passing of Litigious Nigger
GNAA Mourns Passing of Litigious NiggerFamed nigger icon Johnnie Cochran passed away today following an extended and erotic bout with highly potent Gay Nigger AIDS. Reports from his surviving harem of young black males indicate that Cochran first received the holy seed last year at a secret ceremony in Japan.
"Cochran was a willing recipient of my AIDS-infested manly output," said GNAA president Timecop, pausing from his breakfast of collard greens and discarded shorts.
"I will always remember his shaft as being particularly wide and penetrating," admitted famed African JiZZy to an uninterested Popeyes phone operator, referring to a 2003 sweaty encounter with Johnnie in a Kansas City shower. In IRC, elite nubian malaclypse lauded the departed lawyer, stating "HE STOLE FROM THE JEWS AND GAVE TO THE POOR" and then ejaculating all over his monitor. "That's the third time this month," remarked resident sex-slave Grog, who eagerly lapped up the spilled seed.
Special services for Cochran will be held in the official channel of GNAA, #gnaa on irc.gnaa.us. Attendees are invited to bring bottles of EROS brand lubricant and Macintosh computers for the following festivities. Female creatures need not apply.
About Johnnie Cochran
Johnnie Cochran was born to a family of former slaves in 1937. Throughout his youth he came into contact with many of GNAA's agents, who successfully inculcated the values of trolling and homosexuality in his fertile mind.
Cochran's trolling career started in 1995 with his successful defeat of the odious female Marsha Clark in a Los Angeles courtroom. Though America subsequently had a nice day, Cochran continued to be an object of much masturbation and insertion among loyal gay niggers everywhere.

A Top Ten Geek MovieApollo 13 is easily one of the ten best geek movies out there. I really and truly admired the engineers the film portrayed---they were clever and resourceful, kluging up a solution to a life-threatening problem tens of thousands of miles away.
The reason this is such a wonderful geek film is that there is no bad guy. No evil to overcome. It's not even man versus nature. It's man versus The Problem, and man, brandishing a slide rule and some duct tape, triumphs.

Re:Orion Project
The problem is more intractible than it looks. And your analysis of the analogy somewhat suspect.
There can be quite an acceleration of engineering improvements once you have the prototype in place. In the asteroid case, you would have to be able to design & implement a vehicle capable of getting the asteriod with time to spare (like a year), with a probable additional requirement of humans being able to survive the trip. (I'm having a problem believing you'll find enough qualified personnel to go on a suicide mission. Don't look at me, I prefer to figure out a way to survive an asteriod impact.) Especially since you now are relying on a technology which has never been implemented in the manner you describe (nuclear pulse propulsion). Then you would need to be able to generate enough force to alter the trajectory of a heavenly body. Don't think a nuke is going to cut it. (See Armaggeddon.) Even shattering the asteroid is a technical event, since we yet have drilled a kilometer in a low-gravity vaccuum. I suspect it probably was easier to design a working a-bomb, since it was easier to do testing.
But I agree its not inconceivable to pull off a sucessful trajectory altering mission. But is it within the ability of a single nation like the U.S.? (Hello martial law.) Or do you think the most difficult trick would be surviving the war to establish a world gov't, and to wrap it up quickly enough to start working on the engineering problems. (Don't even try to suggest this could be done by UN committee.)
Nah, I think the bureaucratic roadblocks will be just as difficult as the engineering.
