Sounds familiar...Now we are letting inanimate objects raise our kids!
Anyone else had a flashback to the 1984 Tom Selleck sci-fi thriller Runaway? Just make damn sure the little bastards can't hold a

When will it end? When will it end?
Right when it decides to find the fairy that can make it a real boy, and freezes with a solid block of ice along with Coney Island..

Yeah, yeah, just a repeat of the AI plot...
Yeah, yeah
.... and in 10,000 years he'll pull out a strand of David's mother's hair and the aliens will briefly recreate his mother so he can be a real boy for a few hours ... Man, /. stories are just repeats from the past or repeats of the inevitable future nowadays.

Re:That's the point!
Yep, that's exactly the point of the show.
The O.C. is a soap opera. But it's a soap opera that doesn't take itself seriously, knows it's ridiculously overblown, often has comedy moments for the sake of comedy moments, has much better production values than the average soap and even mocks itself. It isn't The West Wing, but it isn't trying to be.
I would also like to point out to people that the show is called The O.C. because the original name, Orange County, was used in a certain 2002 Jack Black movie and using the same name would just be asking for trouble. -

Re:Tried already with BSD> The asian mindset doesn't really understand the open source concept
Where's the basis for this comment? Open source wasn't working too well in <insert country name here> in 1995, yet 10 years later it seems to be catching on, despite "the <insert country name here> mindset". Maybe mindset has nothing to do with it and it's just that open source is still ramping up in Asia?
Regarding the AC's "kiasu" crack, English has a word for "greed", does that mean we are all greedy? Some countries may use the word more often in their vocabulary, but that also applies to non-Asian countries (especially if you take your stereotypes from the movie "Wall Street").
The point is ladies and gentlemen that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of it's forms - greed for life, for money, knowledge - has marked the upward surge of mankind and greed - you mark my words - will not only save Teldar Paper but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you. -- Gordon Gekko (Wall Street)

Re:Bad marketing: A Dramatization
And all the actors are late-30's portraying 16-18 year-olds... I just find that a little weird.
Not that I'm a fan or anything, but would it hurt to do a little bit of research first? The oldest "kid" on the show is played by an actor in his late 20s (1978). the youngest is actually the correct age (1986). None of the "kids" are late-30s. Late-20s, maybe, and I agree that's a little weird having an actor play 10+ years younger than he/she is, but late-20s is a lot closer to teens than late-30s.

Re:Enterprise cancellation did not deter Berman
In case you're wondering, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408305/ is the IMDB page about this movie. I looked up the screenwriter, and it looks like he worked on Band of Brothers, so that's good. The production team doesn't seem to have done anything worthwhile. Cliff Bole (director) I remember from some episodes of DS9 but it looks like he worked on a lot of Voyager too. Well, nobody's perfect.

Re:Dupe CityWhat will be really cool is when they take someone to court for illegally swapping this movie over the internet. If they make a film about that guy that would be too many levels of recursion for most filmgoers.
Kind of offtopic, but I found it amusing that in April of 2004, this movie had the most illegal downloads. No irony there for sure.

Getting past Total Contention
Will wonders never cease? Something I agree with Kerry & Clinton on?
You (understandably) got modded +Funny.
But you've touched on a completely serious issue -- the politics of finding common ground.
Our current political circus is built on the lawyer/contention model -- either I'm totally for you, or I'm totally against you. My party right or wrong, your party be damned. A world of Total Contention.
But Total Contention is an illusion. Life isn't like that. Real people aren't always wrong, aren't always the enemy. I vote for X, that doesn't make Y a total idiot. It only seems like Y is a total idiot, because the X party has a vested interest in Total Contention.
Too many leaders feed us the Total Contention bullshit, because Total Contention keeps us distracted, keeps us from thinking clearly, keeps us from building bridges to each other ... bridges that might make those leaders obsolete.
Harry Tuttle put it well: Listen, kid, we're all in it together.
I'm not talking about a Sixties love-fest here. We do need to debate issues. We do need to promote the views we cherish, and challenge the views we hate.
But if we're going to get past Total Contention -- get past the politics of hate -- get past all of that "Us Versus Them" crap -- if we're going to achieve honest intelligent debate, if we're going to find some kind of common ground where we can live on this ball of mud without hating each other to death -- then we've got to learn to listen to each other and learn from each other.

Re:ummm... no try Firefly ....hmmm ah no."Firefly" (2002/I) [TV-Series 2002-2003] http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0303461/
Babylon 5: A Call to Arms (1999) (TV) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0146455/
Crusade also 1999, B5-CTA was it's pilot.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0149437/
"Outlaw Star" (1998) [TV-Series]http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266171/
OK and with the Outlaw Star reference, I am being snotty about Firefly and referencing an old snide comment of mine about Firefly here on slashdot.
But still, given the poor performance of Legends of the Rangers, I can see why it would flop. G'Kar made B5 (amongst others) and it was nice to see him but he wasn't staying and neither were the audience.

Like most rodents, I am sure hamsters are prolific breeders. Barry Manilow, Barry White or Isaac Hayes would all be good choices to set 'the mood'. However, Tom Jones has the magic when it comes to the animal kingdom...haven't you seen Mars Attacks?

Re:Huh?
They probably canceled it to produce Serenity
Status: Post-production
The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, "Serenity." He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family -- squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers -- a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister -- he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space. Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board "Serenity" herself.
If the movie does well, rumor has the tv series will return! -
Re:Sorry to disagree...
Hm. Having just watched the streaming episode of Battlestar Galactica, I think that baldly stating that everything in the series has a matter-of-fact explanation might be at least a slight exaggeration, because much of the plot doesn't seem to make total sense. For example, if that transport ship had nukes on it, wouldn't you be a touch bothered about blowing it up that near to the rest of the ships? Or are we talking very, very small nukes? What's with the Terminator-style humaniform thing, and why does nobody ever suggest taking a few minutes out to identify Cylon spies? Are they totally organic, in which case, how do the Cylons know they haven't created something that's going to turn right back at them? What's with the blonde hanging out in that dude's head? Why bother with all this blonde clone stuff at all, when they clearly won already? Why, and here's the question that's bugging me most, do the humans wait 33 minutes every time for the Cylons to come find them before jumping away? Surely you'd be better off leaving before they arrive?
Based on that episode, and I appreciate that I very probably am a closed-minded person with no capacity to appreciate good TV, the only obvious assumption to make is that this BG is basically a sort of 'Cube' rerun; you know, that Canadian doodad with the basic plot of 'postulate an experiment in which the inexplicable kills people in unusual ways for non-apparent reasons'. Now, that's not to say that I don't like it - I'd watch a couple more episodes at least - but frankly I think that describing BG as in the style of a documentary possibly hits the metaphorical nail on the head. Nobody has made any effort to explain anything, which accounts for the total lack of unconvincing explanations, but also means that there aren't any explanations available whatsoever for most of the questions above. Much of this is presumably for dramatic purposes, or possibly was answered in the pilot, and I am just fine with either of those, but I have a nasty feeling that some of it is just as much dramatic licence as Star Trek, sold in a way that appears to require no explanation. That episode displays FTL travel, sound in space, cloned humaniform robots and apparent telepathy/mind control; that's a decent set of sci-fi magic elements right there. In fact, the only major difference would appear to be a disinclination for technobabble and a commendable resolve to avoid permitting exposition about the story's universe to get in the way of the drama. -
Re:Enterprise
Forget Star Trek. I want to see the revival of Captain Power! Does anyone else remember this toy maker sponsored show? What a shame that show didn't get a chance to develop a fan following.
-
How is this news?
Perhaps this is news for the UK, but I recall seeing Star Wars: Attack of the clones more than two years ago, in a South Western Ontario theatre (Galaxy cinema at Conestoga Mall for the locals) that has DLP digital technology.
I am not sure how the movie was delivered to the movie, but I vividly remember that I was close to the screen (crowded theatre), and seeing the pixels on some scenes, like on a low res monitor. Another guy told me that he too saw the pixels.
Perhaps for the UK, it makes sense to truck the movie on hard disk, since distances are not that great. For US and Canada, this may not be practical.
-
It wouldn't be the same anyway...
Since Richard Biggs is dead, any new Babylon 5 production wouldn't quite have the same aura as the TV series. Dr. Franklin was a strong supporting character, whose presence would be sorely missed.

Re:"capitalist scumbags"
There's actually a really interesting documentary floating around that looks at the idea of a corporation as a psychopath. In the documentary, a psychiatrist lists out the common attributes of psychopaths (warped sense of right and wrong, inability to feel remorse or responsibility, sole fixation on a goal, manipulators, etc), and corporations basically fulfill them all.
Highly recommended viewing. There's also a book based around the same ideas, check the following links for more info.
