A Flying Circus
It's like that scene from Monty Python & the Quest for the Holy Grail where they all look to the castle and say "Camelot". Then, just before the song and dance routine, Patsy mumbles: "it's only a model."
When a product is in Beta, devs get to deny everything. Well, even in final, they usually slither their way out, but that's not the point. At the end of the day, if the software breaks down, they just have to hire Patsy as their support agent to say: "it's only a beta."
Just think of the money being saved by not releasing final software. Could you imagine Microsoft coming along and reasing the final version of office? "Well," they'd say. "This really is it. We're really done now. You can't get any better than this." We wouldn't believe it.
Software is never finished. Programs go through a continious development cycle. If, at a point during the endless cycle, the product happens to co-incide with something the developer thinks people want, it gets released.
And, of course, no one really wants to support software anyway. I mean... except for those aftermarket guys... uh... consultants. Yeah. those guys. No, they only want to install it for you and then, when it breaks down, emit: "It's only a beta."
Releasing software as beta is just an admission that instead of finishing the job, they've done a good enough job and have now nipped off to the pub for a drink. Can you blame them for that? ;) -

The scenario in that article also bears a striking resemblance to Primer.

I predict a great writter will make a short story about a machine like that and Hollywood will turn it into an awful motion picture!

WHAT DID YOU TELL HIM ABOUT FRODO AND THE RING?!?!Niggersoft Announces GNAA/Hard
Niggersoft Announces GNAA/HardMisha Borovsky (AP) Moscow, Soviet Russia - Niggersoft chairman and CEO jesuitx today announced the private beta test of the first operating system suited towards the needs of today's gay niggers, GNAA/Hard. The OS is intended to grow at a faster rate of development and use, and be based on famous Marxist Richard Stallman's OS, GNU/Hurd.
"Hard represents so much in the OS world", said GNAA President and Niggersoft Board-member timecop." Our private beta now loads the system BIOS, then displays "Hello World" in rainbow colors. Our codebase at this point is now roughly 500% more mature than GNU/Hurd."
When asked why he felt a microkernel was the best choice for the future of the OS, GNAA ohsix simply stated, "no u r". It is the belief of this journalist that ohsix was trying to point out the major flaws of pure monolithic kernel structure, as seen in Operating Systems like Linux, which are known for poor security and an utter lack of intuitive use or overall quality.
GNAA member JacksonBrown told reporters, "Hard is going to be the best OS available by Q2 2014. Unfortunately, we are not planning a public beta until Summer of 2010, as our purely microkernel based structure will require around 30 Gibibytes of RAM to run the base servers and daemons. However, if Moore's law continues to apply, any Alienware based system will do."
It is rumored that Hard received it's name due to the similarity to GNU/Hurd, and to represent the rigidity of the massive niggers' cocks that are developing the OS.

Re:What of other works of art?
If I go to the theator with a sound recorder, record all the sound, split off the music as much as possible and make a limited soundtrack of my own and sell it on CD how is that a copy1!11!11111 A movie has motion ADN sound!11 Oh my god my rights are being trampled.
Anyway, that was in response to your theory of how this shouldn't be copyright violation. There are many cases that already cover exactly this situation. For example a few years back here on Slashdot there was an article about a movie which featured Times Square in New York. They digitally removed ads from Time Square and put in their own. The court ruled that they had every right to film Time Square even though various advertisement's therein were copyrighted. They were explicitly for public display as is this sculpture. The court also ruled that just as an artist could make the statue of liberty be in a post apocolyptic state in say Planet of the Apes, an artist could also replace billboard advertisements with their own. The movie was I believe Spider Man 2. Head to that link and search for "Times Square". -

Re:Follow up story
Nukes would be overkill, but perhaps a nice long range cruise missile would take out the Geek Compound without starting World War 3. Nukes would cripple the internet and cause a few more nasty side effects.
Perhaps complete destruction of the Geek Compound and the possible destruction of modern civilization can be averted by Slashdot implementing the cyberspace version of Abraham's Sacrifice in the spirit of the movie Fail Safe by publicly announcing and hosting a 1 minute high-resolution 10,000 FPS MPEG of a nuclear detonation. That should be sufficient to cause Slashdot's servers to go critical. -
Re:Minor correction to the story:
This would not happen because then they could not make a remake of a movie when the copyright expired on the original. A vast number of movies released are simply regurgitations of older movies with new actors and better effects.
In most cases the original film is STILL covered by copyright. For Example, Man on Fire, released in 2004 is a remake of this movie from 1987.
What usually happens is that the studio owns the rights to a film and they in turn license use of those rights to others.

Re:more humor: objective preference confirmationNo. The level of pigment in the skin is irrelevant to the color of muscle tissue. BSD Trivia
I have the original 4.3 BSD manual, VAX-11 edition from 1986. It's 6 rainbow colored volumes plus two copies of the Master Index in a sophisticated brown. The cover of each features a cartoonish devil poking a bubble marked UNIX with a pitchfork. The part that I always found interesting is that the inside of the cover credits the design to John Lassetter, Lucasfilm, Ltd. Lucasfilm! How cool is that? That same year, he wrote and directed Luxo Jr., Pixar's first short and the origin of their logo. Here's his page on IMDB:

More people (in general, not necissarily the parent) should watch a little less news and read a little more history. It's like having a sports almanac from 1985 when you live in the 50's. Oh well, hope really does spring eternal. -

See the interesting documentary Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey which is both mysterious and tragic. The virtuosity of the aged player who learned under Mr. Theremin was impressive.

Re:That is not the first time that happens
I can really respect the people who play it live, it's really tricky to get certain things right with it.
Just playing around is fine, but precise orchestration requires a helluva concentration and motor-skills
Check out the movie Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey. The footage of Clara Rockman playing the theremin is amazing. She doesn't use it as a special effect, she plays it like the intsrument it was intended to be. -
Re:Bionics
There was a film released not too long ago called Code 46 that, among MANY other things, involved a guy (played by Tim Robbins) who took what was called an 'empathy virus'. It was basically a pill that he took that altered his brain chemistry such that his sense of empathy was temporarily enhanced. Not in that Counsellor Troi way of "Captain, I sense... FEAR!", mind you.
He essentially used it to determine if another character (played by Samantha Morton) was stealing from a company. (he was a consultant or something). He did so by asking her and other potential theives to tell him something unique about themselves. I'm assuming that, in having to think about one's self, it opened up the person's mind enough to allow Robbins's character to "get in there". For instance, he used that technique a couple of times in the film to guess a person's password (or 'palabra', as it was called in the film).
Overall, I wouldn't say that the film was very good (being the ever-so descerning film critic that I am...), but it was definately an interesting movie in that it introduced scientific and societal possibilities for a future 50 years or so from now.
Assuming this sort of thing is even possible, would this be an acceptable use of your 'empathy implant'? This is not meant as a troll/flame; I'm honestly asking you (and myself, actually):
Would this kind of use of a seemingly humanitarian technology be acceptable? -
I reccomend the movie "Modulations"
It does a good job of covering the bases... albeit a little incomplete. Modulations is a great film!
