Okay, but don't laugh...theatre. I've been acting pretty consistently for the last three-plus years, and I've gotten pretty decent at it--I've got an agent and have landed a couple of small paying gigs. I finally realized about a year ago that the acting thing makes me happy, while IT work is slowly draining my soul and turning me into Milton.

I'm going back to school because a.) I never finished my bachelor's degree and I really want one, and b.) I want to study something I love.

I know you're not about dwelling in the past when it comes to your acting career, but I did want to say that I think "Young Harry Houdini" is an oft-overlooked film that you should be very proud of. Okay, so maybe I was only like 10 when I saw it, but as an amateur magician it really had an effect on me, and I thank you for your role in it.

A related question then: What advice can you give (beyond saying "be born with raw talent") to folks like yourself who see themselves as creative types with an interest in acting, writing, speaking - the public arts, if you will - but who also don't want to tread the over-worn path of mainstream media and every other Hollywood actor-wannabe? You seem to have done an exceptional job being a part of the underculture - sci-fi TV, self-publishing, blogging, small theater, etc., so it would seem you have some insight into how to participate in these arts without becoming corrupted by the process of getting involved.

The other day I was channel surfing, and I bumped into Deep Core. At first I thought it was a Star Trek episode, because Terry Farrell was in it too. Do you find that directors/producers want to team you up with other ST:TNG cast members when you go looking for work?

Actually. I never said that it causes someone to sadistically abuse anyone else...I said that marijuana is at times (whether factually or hypothetically) blamed for it. Big difference. DiCaprio, for sure. Winslet, no way! Have you seen her in Enigma? That's some good geek cred right there, and she plays a very dowdy-but-smart character who actually gets to use her brains. A 1940s geekgirl, in other words. (No, I don't confuse actors with the roles they play, but since I don't know them personally, there's not much point in trying to judge them on any other basis.) Anyway, I wouldn't say she was good-looking enough (as the movie world judges these things) to get by on her appearance, she's certainly not in the same league as pretty-boy DiCaprio.

I know Highlander II was a terrible film but man, why we gotta drink your hateraid? It broke the rules of a sequel (it didn't tell the original story in a different way) but it was fun and at least watchable. At least when they introduced new concepts they tried to explain them and didn't deliberately try to misinform viewers about real world issues. If you wanna talk about a movie that really sucked, have a look at Replicant. Now that was a piece of shit film. Fans of the film actually considered it the best acting Jean-Claude Van Damme has ever done, which kinda reminds you of people who talk about Windows XP being the most stable operating system that Microsoft has ever produced. It may be true, but it's not saying much.

Movies in Ontario are not reviewed by the movie industry, but by the government. Ratings carry the force of law behind them for their enforcement.

Similarly, with games, the ESRB ratings don't need to be followed by retailers, but an 'R' rating will.

The government requiring retailers to follow ratings: A+. The government re-rating games: D-. Hooray Ontario.

If law is going to be behind a rating system, I'd much rather it be controlled by the government. Why? Because what you are suggesting would mean a non-governmental body would have the law behind it in placing restrictions on games. The MPAA does not have this power in the U.S., and the Ontario equivalent shouldn't either.

One thing to note, there is no requirement in Ontario that games be rated (and actually, the requirement on movies has been overturned in court on constitutional basis). They will only be rated after a complaint, so much fewer games will end up going through this.

Also, note that the ESRB ratings necessarily reflect the values of people in Ontario. When you compare movie ratings, you'll notice that the american rating system puts a heavy burden on anything sexual. An interesting example of this is Lost in Translation, which got an R-rating in the states most likely due to a very short lived scene in a strip club, whereas it got a PG rating in Ontario. It's been rumoured that Coppola purposefully included the scene just to get the R-rating, in order to make the movie seem more mature.

Harsh rating for sexuality are starting to show up with the ESRB as well, with games like 'Singles' and an uncensorred version of the new Leisure Suit Larry game getting 'AO' or 'Adults Online' ratings, essentially putting them in the same class as hardcore pornography. This essentially means you will not find these games in most stores, and publishers will refuse to allow the game to forward until it's fixed to get a lower rating.

Once the citizen's life in Iraq becomes relatively stable, and they are able to find jobs, and they can get their kids back in school again, I'm sure there will be some people who will blog. BTW There was a film directly from the populous, Voices of Iraq. Apparently pretty graphic and biased, it is still a good documentary of what Iraq is like right now.

James Cameron HAD NOTHING TO DO with "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," that was Robert Zemeckis.

I really want to see the movie about the intrepid '@' and his adventures in a world of dangerous 'D's, obnoxious 'o's and ravening 'r's. The scene where he's backed into a dead-end '#' by a swarm of killer 'b's, with nothing but a ')' to defend himself, and then his faithful 'f' saves the day, should have audiences laughing and cheering.

Heck, there's no way it could possibly be worse than Dungeons & Dragons: the Movie! :)

Would any single game engine help you create your own Citizen Kane?
Not right now, but I'm sure this is a direction the video games creators are contemplating because it's an area of expected growth. It would certainly make the creation of cinematics much easier for dev teams if machinima was considered part of the engine.

The problem is that in games like Doom 3 for example, the creation of cinematics is scripted heavily and designed into the levels. Models take weeks to build correctly and integrate, and you have to have strong modelling skills to achieve that. There is no separation of set and action or actors, for the most part. I understand that Half Life 2 has changed this kind of static nature, but it's still very early.

The games would have to have quick modelling system built in, or methods for generating random characters and skins, and voices.

I'm sure that in the next twenty years, this is the direction of video games. It would be a smart approach, IMHO.

You also have to consider the comparison between video game sales and box office/rental sales. Video games are beating the movie industry to a pulp, so film as a medium of expression is likely on the way out, unless the business makes some changes and continues to grow and support new vision. Indy film will always be of a higher quality than blockbusters, IMHO.

Look at the reviews for Alexander. Ebert said the film was crap. That's a film they spent $150mil to create!

With games like Halo 2 grosing $100 mil on the first day, for a much smaller budget compared to Alexander, the bottom line is clear. The age of movies is waning.

Quality of film has declined heavily as far as dramatic content, with the exception of films like LotR. I'm seeing the film expression as being played out for the most part.

Sorry Tux, but you receiving awards at the Oscars? Please nooo....
