Isn't this, more or less, the concept of the movie Surrogates?

To quote the black kid from the movie, Love At First Bite: "It's people like you who gives the neighborhood a bad name."

Yes and no.

It's more related to the time period in which those neighborhoods were built, and how they were built. Grid street patterns were normal before WWII, along with smaller houses (Victorians, Craftsman bungalows, etc.). "Subdivisions" didn't become common until the postwar era, when sprawling ranch houses with two-car garages and big yards were popular.

Not coincidentally, those postwar subdivisions were also getting built at the same time as the civil rights movement: at the time, black people were "blockbusting" in those grid-street neighborhoods, while the white people were moving out to the curved/cul-de-sac subdivisons to get away from them. In fact, the restricted number of subdivision entrances/exits, along with the higher housing prices (enforced in the zoning code by minimum lot sizes, which forced lower-density development) were, in part, tools to keep out those perceived to be undesirable.

Want a shallow depth of field? Think you need a large lens / fast lens? Why? When the computer can take multiple photos at different focal lengths and calculate the depth properly. Why twiddle with zoom and f-stop?

Because by the time my camera gets around to taking several photos at various focal lengths, the fast moving subject I was trying to take a picture of already left the scene. But I have the opposite problem (since I can fake a shallow depth of field in photoshop) -- I have to open the lens all the way on my P&S in any kind of low-light situation since the sensor is too noisy at high ISO's, so I end up with a shallower depth of field than I wanted.

Want a fast lens? Point and shoots go down to f1.8 now. I can photograph the craters on the moon with a pocket sized G7X without a tripod FFS. How often do you try to detect planets in other solar systems?

I want a fast lens *and* a larger, lower noise sensor than I can find in most P&S cameras. But I don't use that fast lens for taking pictures of planets or the moon.

Want to shoot wildlife at a distance? Think your DSLR is the best option? Think again, you should be using a higher pixel camera at a lower zoom, because you'll have difficulty tracking the moving object at high zoom with that lumping great lens.

Right, all those sports photographers that use the big $8000+ 300mm telephoto lenses could save some money and just get a point a shoot with more pixels than his 20MP DSLR and he can just crop down the pictures to give him a nice 3MP shot of the winning touchdown. Pixels are pixels, right? The 1/2" sensor on a 20MP point-and-shoot is just as good as the 35mm sensor on his DSLR, right? And what possible difference could there be between an $8000 lens and the lens on a $500 P&S?

Want to shoot movies? Do you see any pros using DSLRs? They use a Red or similar, not a Canon EOS.

The best female programmer that I've know, and I thought she was quite good, was a programmer for almost a decade, then quit to become a stay-at-home-mom, but then became a pseudo-part-time programmer who does remote work for a company, since she can do that from home. She's still salaried, but gets paid a lot less.

Society has low professional expectations for women, and pays them according to those expectations

Take it how you want, but I don't know any male programmers who quit to be a stay-at-home-dad with a pay hit.

This is the 'battle' that women face. It's not necessarily that any individual man is on a crusade against women (though there certainly are those). It is that the cultural expectations are different. Women are expected, as a group, to have less professional ambition, to be more willing to sacrifice their professional ambition for "family," and to place family emergencies ahead of professional commitments. That is a stereotype. There is no biological reason why an ambitious woman could not marry an attractive, stay-at-home man, and entrust him with raising their children, but it is so contrary to our ingrained stereotypes that it sounds like the plot of a comedy. It is the plot of a comedy. Lower expectations for women lead to lower pay, lower pay leads to lower commitment, lower commitment leads to statistics that justify lower expectations.

This is not something you fix in a generation. You can fix it, by carefully picking out literature, arts, and behavior the propagate the stereotypes and identifying them. You don't necessarily have to ban stereotyping works, but you do have to point out that they're presenting a stereotype based on archaic forms
