Re:Ob. Chasing Amy
If you're talking about Chasing Amy, I have seen the movie and can't remember that dialog.
You might want to get tested for Alzheimer's. It was definitely in there. It was the lead-in to the big argument between the two guys that ends with Holden confessing (to Banky) that he loves Alyssa.
In fact, you can find the quote on IMDB.

Is anybody else reminded...of 12 Monkeys?
Now we really will have to pull out our teeth so they can't find us. *sigh*

Re:I wish...
You can. Call or write your Senators, tell them you're a constituent (and a voter, if applicable), and express your approval or disapproval of bills you like or dislike. Enough noise from the unwashed can get a bill killed, just like Uma Thurman did.

Re:Online vs. OfflineI'm reminded of a line from Rounders, where Matt Damon's character says of the "Judges Game" (paraphrasing) "I realised - in this room of learned-minds, there was not one real poker player".
Intelligence (or geek skills) isn't the sole requirement. Knowledge will get you so far, but your ability to play the game (primarily the social aspect as you said). At the professional level, so much comes down to reading the other man, and controlling your reactions to how the cards and bets are played out. You can know odds and betting patterns, but hiding that grin when you make a good hand is worth so much more...

Advent Children?A suggestion would've been to include some links to more information about the movie:

Re:Abby someone
What hump?
The quoted dialogue above is a hilarious exchange from an extremely funny movie. They made it in B&W and it still worked in 1974. Today it's quite a cult classic.
I haven't seen a slashdot name of Abby Normal yet and you can always slip brains through slot in door after 5PM. -
De LiftBelieve me, putting brains and computers together is a BAD idea. The next thing you would do is have them control elevators
...What happens when you do THAT is documented in a '83 Dutch B-movie by Dick Maas (not all that bad, compared to other Dutch B-movies)
The lift [elevator] got hungry... nuf' said.

Soon we will all be augmented by our extra brain bags! Organic computers in a purse that we either wear or have implanted in our abdomens. I can't wait for the beta test

Re:Second Amendment
If being thrown into jail or being executed is the only option besides sticking a knife or taking pot shots with a hunting rifle at the invading army, I think I know why my option is going to be.
While a little bit far-fetched, I think "Red Dawn" at least gives a little bit of taste of what ordinary citizens would do when occupied by an invading army. The real question would then be just how far would organized resistance be, and would citizen-soldiers be employed during such an invasion. The very fact that foriegn soldiers are occupying parts of America would indicate a failure of major proprotions on the part of the U.S. military, so under such a theoretical situation the regular U.S. Federal military would be in shambles. -

GNAA - RKZGNAA Announces Remastered Version of Gayniggers from Outer Space: The Movie
GNAA Announces Remastered Version of Gayniggers From Outer Space: The MovieGNAA Vice-President and co-founder JesuitX announced Friday that GNAA founder timecop had completed his nine-month long project of remastering Morton Lindberg's classic Danish masterpiece, Gayniggers from Outer Space: The Movie
.
Said timecop, "I undertook this project so the Gay Nigger Association of America could easily spread the gay nigger seed with a crystal-clear picture and DVD-quality sound. But most of all, I do it for my gay nigg[er]s."
The previously mentioned JesuitX and GNAA high-level operator lysol were allowed early access to view the remastered version of movie. Having been already familiar with the VHS copy currently in circulation, they were in for a real treat. JesuitX was quoted as saying "In that scene where Captain B. Dick [played by Sammy P. Soloman] takes Arminass [played by Coco P. Dalbert] into the relaxing room for a conversation, the beautiful quality of the black skin, combined with the crystal clear sound made it feel like the Captain was sitting right next to me, massaging my knee, and letting me know he always has an eye on my ass. I lost complete control and starting masturbating furiously."
GNAA member l0de was also heard in background continuously saying "LOL JEWS DID WTC LOL JEWS".
Digitally Remastered version of Gayniggers from Outer Space is to be available for worldwide distribution immediately. Everyone is encouraged to download it using BitTorrent, by clicking here. You will need a BitTorrent client to download this release.

Dino De Laurentus & Raymond Hansen Present
A Lindberg & Kaistensen Production"The Universe. It's mighty power. It's evolutionary force, not to be stopped by anyone. In its beauty, this, this is a happy place to stay, filled with harmony and cosmic joy. A free place, where men can express themselves, and be as when they were born. All of this is, because someone cares. Because someone looks after us. When we sleep, when we play. When we act natural. This is a movie about those who risk life, and partners, to guarantee living in a wonderful and free universe. This is a movie about the Gayniggers From Outer Space. The Gayniggers come from the planet Anus, in the 8th Sun System, far far away from here. They are much, much more intelligent than any other creature in the Univerise. The most fascinating thing about them is that they, with the help of their super intelligence, and their highly developed telepathic system, Braintapping, will be able to create a world, a society, a perfect world to live in without the presence of women. A MALE ONLY WORLD."

Do you want to play a game?
Reminds me of some random movie I watched on TV a few years ago... a quick Google turns it up as Wargames (1983). Not exactly a good movie, but it's pretty relevant to this article.

Re:interesting but it's not really true
Makes me think of the quote from Armageddon:
Rockhound : You know we're sitting on four million pounds of fuel, one nuclear weapon and a thing that has 270,000 moving parts built by the lowest bidder. Makes you feel good, doesn't it?
And it will have flaws, no matter how often and thorough you check. -

Re:Civ IVand Alpha Centauri remains the best of any games spawned out of the series.
Well that goes without saying
:)It might be nice to see a sequel to Alpha Centauri, however they'd either have to stick to just updating the graphics and AI or redo the entire thing from scratch. The old storyline was great, with compelling voice acting for the various quotes and other story bits and Baraka was a gold mine for the video clips.

Godzilla Does Cameo Work in Semi-Retirement
Next time you see the great popcorn adventure "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" (I highly recommend it), watch the newspapers that flow on-screen early in the movie after the first attack in New York.
One Japanese paper shows a very familar outline of our favorite destroyer, ostensibly taking on the robots.
Next to Sir Laurence Olivier finding work in the movie (despite being dead), it was one of the many funny in-jokes of the movie. The link above details more. -
Re:Hmmmm...
This is the final movie before that semi-retirement. The retirement is reported to last at least 10 years.

Re:Its Gojira
OK, but acccording to the Internet Movie Database 'gojira' was already the nickname for a very large, tough-looking man who worked at Toho; which they reused for the monster.
-
Re:Am I the only one...
The Japanese name, "go-ji-ra", is being re-translated into english for future films as "Zilla" instead of "Godzilla" since, for some reason the target audience has been pegged as being the sort to be offended by this type of thing. Personally I can't see how those two groups would ever cross paths, but whatever.
I'm also at a bit of a loss for why we can't simply call it "Gojila" -
Ira
Do I have to call "Gojira" just "'Ira" now? Has the Phillipines really conquered Toho's turf?

Re:Brandon Routh?
Which TV series are you talking about? The Adventures of Superman stared George Reeves (how's that for old) long before Christopher Reeve had the role. I am just old enough to remember a time before the last 'crop' of Superman movies (look up Superman on IMDB, hell, I didn't know there were so many titles), when the old 50's show was in heavy syndication. I saw the Lois and Clark (and for that matter smallville) as fair and worthy tellings of the Superman story. George Reeve was my 'first superman', I quess that since he was long dead by the time I saw the show, I am more open to other 'flavors' of the story.
-
Re:Brandon Routh?
To the _real_ old folks (like me), it's not Christopher Reeve, it's my man George.
Now that guy was Superman! He was an excellently wooden Clark, a sufficiently boy-scout Supes. Not too powerful but still the man.
Oh, and the 1950s series had the best Jimmy Olson and Chief as well. I'll give you Terri Hatcher as Lois Lane though, although I like the 40s Cartoon Lois better.

Re:Anybody else
Daredevil got rented only for Jennifer Garner.
Same here... and we're in for a treat next year: Elektra (2005)

Re:Don't know about that
Well, what about Mischa Barton? Last I heard, she might be asked to do Lois Lane.

Not that they are making another Superman series, but that they are doing this with the full knowledge of the Superman curse.
Curse be damned:
Teri Hatcher
Kristin Kreuk

good essayA very good essay, allthough good efforts, if not sponsored by the tax-payers dollar, never get the massive audience it deserves. Whilest studying society one sooner or later finds out that is no coincidence. And does the above essay need a massive readership! Especialy today!
About the blue box : go and get your copy of "Pirates of Silicon Valley" at
... ehh, geez its nowhere for sale anymore... I guess thats what Paul Graham wanted to point out. There's still a review to be read at :http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168122/about Grahams fear and description about a nation falling down freely :
"Let me put the case in terms a government official would appreciate. Civil liberties are not just an ornament, or a quaint American tradition. Civil liberties make countries rich. If you made a graph of GNP per capita vs. civil liberties, you'd notice a definite trend. Could civil liberties really be a cause, rather than just an effect? I think so. I think a society in which people can do and say what they want will also tend to be one in which the most efficient solutions win, rather than those sponsored by the most influential people. Authoritarian countries become corrupt; corrupt countries become poor; and poor countries are weak. It seems to me there is a Laffer curve for government power, just as for tax revenues. At least, it seems likely enough that it would be stupid to try the experiment and find out. Unlike high tax rates, you can't repeal totalitarianism if it turns out to be a mistake."
To see a example in action of a nation falling down, go watch and see "Masked and Anonymous" by Bob Dylan, a masterpiece to be. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319829/

Re:Orwellian?Getting back to advertising this makes me think of that movie Looker.
In it Digital Matrix Inc. had some spiffy tech they were about to launch that they could add to advertisement to induce people to buy.
This was on top of the computer simulations and determination of the exact place for every element of an advert for maximum effect. To the point they start digitizing models and getting rid of the pesky IP hogging fleshbags.

Its about time someone put Blackwell in his place.
Is the bench edging toward a I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE! mood? The embassing Supremes, an attempt to shrink the 9th Circuit to a few streets in San Francisco, a general awareness of the rising tide? The typically Bushian decisions seem to be waning in popularity.
Mmm, pendulum. -
