As far as I see, everyone seems to like it over the first movie! I hope I can catch the flick this Monday with friends. I didn't love the first one, but it was enjoyable. I hope the second one is a lot better. :)

I have to admit, he's outdone himself - who knew he had something comparable to "Triumph of the Will" in him.

I know that's being generous, comparing him to Leni Riefenstahl. I'm feeling generous towards the fat lying white bastard today.

Sam Raimi is a good director, yes. He is considered an auteur director as well. I love his work. Spiderman was good. However, Spiderman 2 is not his work alone.

The full credits of the film tell the full story. Spiderman 2 was written by a total of 6 people - none of which was S. Raimi. There were also 6 producers and executive producers (although, 'executive producer' is often a title given to someone simply as a 'feel good' title and has little involvement). Cinematography was done by Anette Haellmig and Bob Hope. Bob Murawski did the editing. There are also hundreds of others that were directly involved in the production of this film (sound, art, makeup, set, casting, costumes, set managers, original music, special effects, visuals, stunts, hell - even assistants for the actors and common tradesmen such as electricians) - and that's not counting the actors and extras.

Granted, Raimi is responsible for the over-arcing presentation of the film, but he is in no way the sole artist behind this film. I'm a fan of his earlier works as well, but I'd credit the tallent of those he's worked with just as much as I'd credit him. Things such as Xena and Hercules were not exactly quality productions, even with extreme exageration and drugs influencing your opinion: they were cheesy as hell.

You seem like you're endulging in a bit of hero worship here. Raimi is a good director, yes. He's made due with some less-than adequate filming conditions, and has illustrated a phenominal ability to make due with minimal supplies, creating inventive means to get the film footage he wants. Given the scope and size of Spiderman (and Spiderman 2), I suspect that his hands-on directing style was less prominent than it has been in other works he's been involved in, simply due to this fact.

Toby mcguire looks like a little kid . He's 30 . Do you want this guy to save you.

Dunst is valuable, too, bringing depth and heart to a girlfriend role that in lesser movies would be conventional. When she kisses her astronaut boyfriend upside-down, it's one of those perfect moments that rewards fans of the whole saga; we don't need to be told she's remembering her only kiss from Spider-Man.

Spider-Man 2 seems like the next step in the slow death of the career of Kirsten Dunst

OK, she's not Meryl Streep, but she doesn't have to be; Kirsten has tremendous sex appeal--which more than compensates for her somewhat mediocre performance in Spider-Man.

Besides, I thought she was intense and believable in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Another interesting point are the ratings for the movie from US viewers and non-US viewers. In both the most commonly voted ratings are 10 and 1 (after those 9 and 8), accounting for about 85% of all votes. I've never seen such a divided set of ratings for any movie.

Still more interesting is that of US viewers give 57% give a rating 10, 27% give 1. Of non-US viewers 80% give 10, 8% give 1.

Everybody can draw their own conclusions from this, but I'd say this is one movie worth seeing - though with a grain of salt.

Well it's nothing new really. I have been recommending Fog of War to all my friends as it really is a good moral argumentation on just (as in fair) war. It seems GWB and the hawks should also see Fog of War in order to learn something, before it's too late.

I kept count, since I was curious. There were 8 swears, going by a conservative view. 4 "MF"s from the Bloodhound Gang song (not used to describe the sex act), 2 "assholes" from the old guy at the gym, "dick" and "cock". Maybe add a couple "hells" or "bastards" in there, but its not much more than somebody would see watching primetime television.
Besides the scenes of the charred and mutilated bodies of Iraqis and the two contractors, there was the scene of the beheading (which if it weren't captioned as such, most people would probably have missed it completely). With that one exception, I had seen all those on the news at one point or another.
This was at most a PG-13, they've given PG-13 to movies that can be worse for a 14 year old year old to see.

We also desperately need to re-think our relationship with Israel. For too long we have been fed with large servings of Israeli propaganda. We need to see the other side of the story. I would hope that one-day he tackles that taboo subject. We don't need another "Exodus".

Although Micheal Moore is a "documentary maker", his documentaries don't stand up to tough analysis. He has apparently used rather dodgy editing techniques (Charlton Heston's tie changes colour in what is supposedly one speech) and staged events and presented them as real (getting a shotgun from a bank). Although I am left wing and I enjoy Micheal Moore movies, I see them as the same type of documentary as The Office or This is Spinal Tap.

Oil...the quest for it is unrelenting. Let's say the game reversed the roles so that the player took on the role of a military/militia team or a terrorist cell and the missions involved removing 'The American Threat' from Iraq?

Three Kings is a celebrated movie about Iraq that initially focuses on some US soldiers, but switches into a story about "removing the American threat from Iraq." It wasn't as extreme as your "what if" scenario, and didn't glorify the massacre of US soldiers, but it did portray the people killing US soldiers as sympathetic underdogs. It won a number of awards and made a lot of money in the US. That's a real example of something critical of the US not only surviving, but flourishing here. Of course, I suspect the more hard-core-anti-US things get, the less well they will do in the US. And I suspect that any game that involves executing US civilians will get criticised by Senators & Representatives. Hell, they already criticize games like GTA, which "merely" involve US citizens killing other US citizens. But I don't think any US President would react to any game by saying that the Iraq citizens would suffer terrible real-world retribution that leaves them all dead.

And Ghost Recon doesn't involve US agents kidnapping and executing innocent citizens. It's only military combatants versus military combatants. So your "what if" is a little too extreme to apply here. At least, I personally can't apply it to the current situation without thinking "apple and oranges" in my head.

(Hmm. And since I made a concession in my other post, let me make a concession here too. I personally do not ever play these games. I find any real-world scenario to be in poor taste, whether it favors the US or not. I do like shooters, but I play Unreal & Tribes. My closest encounter with a "real world" scenario is RTCW, which is fairly removed from reality. Still, playing a terrorist sounds like an interesting game. But probably not a profitable one.)
