Someone just watched Europa Report
So basically someone just saw Europa Report and decided to copy the entire movie premise. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2051879/

Re:Wasted time
Actually, the 2011 Steven Soderbergh movie Contagion is a fairly realistic depiction of a pandemic and the reaction in the US and around the world. Well-researched, keeps the fearmongering to a minimum while still depicting a scary scenario. Takes into account the role of fringe media in spreading panic/pseudoscientific "cures," among other clever touches. A public health organization arranged for a free screening in my area, with a Q&A period afterward, if that gives you any indication of its accuracy.

Re: How does this hurt England?
You wouldn't be the first thick local yocal gardener to hear a big business discussion, in the main meeting room, with the windows open, when it comes to fantasy films http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120737/
At least nobody caught you, or you might have had to slog all the way to mount 7 Arts, with soul sucking henchmen dogging your trail the whole way to confront a giant, floating, flaming, time warner logo. -

Re:Since when did a phaser VAPORIZE its target?
It happens in the presence of Khan Noonien Singh. Clearly the extra energy required to vaporize is derived from the presence of Ricardo Montalban.

They want us as borg drones
The Riddler: Soon my little "Box" will be on countless TVs around the world. Feeding me, credit card numbers, bank codes, sexual fantasies, and little white lies. Into my head they'll go. Victory is inevitable.

You, you're okay. This one: real fuckin' ugly.
Bearded Man: They are dismantling the sleeping middle class. More and more people are becoming poor. We are their cattle. We are being bred for slavery.

Re:blame equality
I saw that movie.
I thought the happy ending was much too optimistic. Real life hasn't changed my opinion yet.

V'Ger is next
Beware all carbon-based life forms infecting planet Earth: ST:TMP
[after Spock comments that, mentally, V'ger is a child]
Commander Leonard 'Bones' McCoy, M.D.: Spock, this "child" is about to wipe out every living thing on Earth. Now, what do you suggest we do? Spank it?
Commander Spock: It knows only that it needs, Commander. But, like so many of us... it does not know what. -
Populaire
On topic, I can recommend the movie Populaire which I saw a few days ago, about a fast typist.

Different countries do it differently
In Canada you must answer all questions put to you in court. If you should incriminate yourself in the process, it can't be used against you.
The 1980s courtroom drama Street Legal had an episode where this happened: the cops were so certain of the guilt of a high school student who they thought was selling drugs that they got a friend of his to testify against him, without checking to see what he had to say first. When he said in open court that the drugs were in fact his the cops couldn't do anything about it.

Re:And the saga continues....
Please tell me what you think I should do to stop it. As an average citizen, I have no power over anything this government does. I am just a victim.
Not protesting means you agree with what happens. You can't be neutral on a moving train.

Re:And how far is this research?
Why don't you help with anti-aging efforts?
This is actually a very good question. Thanks for asking it.
It is because I don't see any progress if it could be achieved. Imagine an ever increasing amount of biomass being used up for an ever increasing number of human beings. At times, old age and death is a great contributor to human progress. Stalin and Mugabe spring into mind. If we were here for eternity all my stereotypes, my convictions, my undue biases would be there forever.
However, me dying opens space for someone to pick up from me, and maybe improve on my shortcomings. And what a boring life this would be. I am convinced that we'd be ending up with the same boredom like you can make out here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070948/
Death is the greatest factor in human advancements of all. In the Indian tradition, often Shiva is considered the greatest of the major three gods, because without destruction, nothing new can be created.I would very much prefer to help with efforts to allow all human beings to lead their limited life-span in a decent manner. I would very much prefer to help with efforts to allow cancer patients to lead a life with little to no suffering until their final breath.
We all have to go one day, untimely or not, and that is about the best decisions some god, respectively mother nature, have taken for us. Actually, if need be I'd help with all efforts to prevent humans from living for eternity. Aging - I am close to 60 - is a part of life that I would actually not want to miss. If only, for its changes on perspectives, which is yet another great learning experience.

Chopping Mall
This reminds me of the movie Chopping Mall, where security robots patrol a mall, and (big surprise) a bunch of teenagers get stuck in there overnight.

Re:If by "looking good", you mean "looking like iO
Yup. Apple is following Microsoft for a change. Not only in tabletifying their OS but also in their naming of it.
I don't see how Neptune (XP) -> Longhorn (Vista) -> Blackcomb (7) -> Jupiter (8) -> Blue (8.1) is similar to: [cat name] 10.1 -10.8 -> Mavericks (10.9)
I remember Jobs way back in the cat era poking fun at Vista's pre production name "Longhorn" and now they name their own OS "Mavericks" which as every QI watcher knows was originally a term describing unbranded cattle.
Um every surfer knows Mavericks is a popular surfing spot. Apple has already stated that they named it after this location. There was even a movie released called Chasing Mavericks . Also unless you are stuck in the 1860s, the more contemporary meaning of maverick is "rebel" like in Top Gun.
So is this all a hidden homage to Tucows or a comment on how they see their customers?
Maybe it's your reading of a meaning that isn't there.

Re:It's a farce
It's like being shocked after learning that a hit man that killed dozens of Russians for the Italians had killed a police office for the Italian. Suddenly its an outrage and something has to be done.
He killed them for Matilda, not for the Italian, but yes, it caused quite a reaction from the police force. And first strong imprint of Natalie Portman in all geeks' brains, although it was just a collateral damage.

Evil
... and that too much access to energy would be bad for the human race.
Rubbish! - With unlimited energy we could easily fix both the CO2-related issues from centuries of burning various fossil fuels, and any byproduct from having all this energy.
With unlimited energy we could control the weather for instance. All the damage from extreme weather would be only in history books.
Oh, and of course mining Helium-3 is evil. That's why the nazis hiding on the back side of the Moon is doing it. They went to the Moon because is was the evil thing to do, and the nazis - being ultimately evil at heart - thus had no choice but to go to the Moon and do the evil thing: Mine Helium-3. Returning to Earth in a huge flying saucer called "Götterdämmerung" to set up their nazi-utopia is actually less evil than mining the Helium-3. They even made a film called "Iron Sky" about this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1034314/

Re:It's only creepy if you speculate.
*-- Rich handicapped people buying time on poor people's bodies.
*-- Rich people buying time on poor people's bodies, in order to do criminal things.
They made a movie about that, except that it was "Rich people buying time on peoples bodies to do whatever the hell they wanted," and "Rich people buying time on death row inmate's bodies to make them kill each other."
It still has some major plot holes that need to be overlooked, but I thought it was a decent sci-fi action flic.

Re:Thank you, sir.
Anyone who pulls out a Stripes reference in this day and age is alright in my book. I just wish I had mod points for you.
Stripes??? Really??? *sigh*
Kudos for your enthusiasm, but your are confusing your Ivan Reitman films. S'okay, there were a lot of years and with enough substances they might kind of blur.
Now, read carefully:Bluto: What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: [to Boon] Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.
Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...
[thinks hard of something to say]
Bluto: The tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
[Bluto runs out, alone; then returns]
Bluto: What the fuck happened to the Delta I used to know? Where's the spirit? Where's the guts, huh? This could be the greatest night of our lives, but you're gonna let it be the worst. "Ooh, we're afraid to go with you Bluto, we might get in trouble." Well just kiss my ass from now on! Not me! I'm not gonna take this. Wormer, he's a dead man! Marmalard, dead! Niedermeyer...
Otter: Dead! Bluto's right. Psychotic... but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons, but that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part!
Bluto: We're just the guys to do it.Now get back to re-education. Boom chaka laka laka boom.

Yeah but put them in a big city where there are pricks that will try and cause them to crash.

Actually True Lies is a remake of La Totale! [1] by Claude Zidi. But I don't think Francois Voisin invented it either.

Person of Interest
Every heard of a TV show called Person Of Interest? It acts like a sci-fi show, but the technology is based on facial recognition. This article suggests it's one step closer to being more "sci" than "fi". http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1839578/

Re:Hey, help us out here.
In The Rebels of Oakland (a great documentary by the way) Tom Hanks has a wonderful quote about the city that I can only paraphrase:
You can go anywhere in the world and tell someone you're from Oakland, and people will respond by saying "oh, you mean where the Raiders play"... Yes... That's exactly where Oakland is. It's where the Raiders play.
Nobody knows about Oakland, PA in the same sense that nobody knows about Pittsburg, CA.

Re:It was a myth
Yeah, Scotland isn't known at all for having any nationalist pride.
It's not like they made a fucking movie about it or anything.....
Oh yeah! I've seen that one:
TOMMY: Doesn't it make you proud to be Scottish?
RENTON: I hate being Scottish. We're the lowest of the fucking low, the scum of the earth, the most wretched, servile, miserable, pathetic trash that was ever shat into civilization. Some people hate the English, but I don't. They're just wankers. We, on the other hand, are colonized by wankers. We can't even pick a decent culture to be colonized by. We are ruled by effete arseholes. It's a shite state of affairs and all the fresh air in the world will not make any fucking difference.

Re:"He"
So?
There are transsexual people. Some transsexual women enlist in the military or engage in other hyper-masculine pursuits to try to make their feelings go away. It doesn't work. I almost did. It wouldn't have worked.
I'm Canadian. Unlike the U.S. military, the Canadian Forces do not view transsexual people as unfit for military service. If an otherwise-good soldier needs to be repaired, they repair them.
The writeup on Wikipedia mentions Don't Ask Don't Tell. This doesn't apply to transsexual people. Directly (unfit for military service), or indirectly (e.g. Barry Winchell's relationship with Calpernia Addams).
I too was tired of being a freak.

What movie is this you're talking about? One made in Ireland by ignorant Americans? What on earth has that to do with Scotland?
