Re:Now it comes down to
I don't know why Facebook didn't just offer a settlement of a few million many years ago.
I'm so tired of Mark acting like he is personally responsible for social networking and therefore deserves $13,500,000,000 dollars. The movie showed that lots of people held his hand and Myspace paved the way years before Facebook showed up. There are a lot of people who deserve to be paid for what they contributed. -
Re:Why give it the time?
If i had a grudge against humans, or a certain set of humans, or something really stupid like that and I wanted to do something that will get me remembered, for whatever reason, in the history of man, I'd do some crap just like this. Make up a "manifesto" of probably gibberish, encyrpted and whatnot, so peeps would spend many hours of discussion and get me remembered.
That's sort of what Dexter did, though his motivation was to mess with the investigators.
Then again, Dexter is a fictional character...
This guy probably is deluded enough to believe he was doing the world a favour, and that the world would see his writings as a sensible "way forward" now that he has set the ball in motion.
I'm sure it's perfectly sensible in his mind, if only everyone else would just listen to him.
----
I have had to deal with a family member who was eventually hospitalized with Delusional Disorder.
Lemme tell you, they can be absolutely convinced that they alone know the truth of things, and that pretty much any action is reasonable to get the rest of the world to see things "for what they really are"
It's damn scary watching it happen to someone you know. I hope none of you have to experience it first hand. -

Funny I thought it was misleading.
Funny I thought it was misleading. I fell for the hype. I haven't done that since the Blair's Witch Project http://www.blairwitch.com/ and other info here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0185937/ Either way I just looked it up and the domain name was created on 2011/07/14 UTC. So if they have been around wouldn't they have been on the web a lot sooner, since they were to have been an intuition about the web?

Re:Leftwingers and environmentalists
You bring up the fallacy that people making money from sex are slaves. As pointed out by your references, the media has gone along way into exploiting this myth (and making a lot of money and having increased ratings in the process).
The pathetic thing is that most people like yourself will gladly argue that it is OK for children to be indentured in India and China so that they can make cheap electronics and running shoes for Westerners, while the sex trade is somehow enslaving them. And when I say "people like you", I am referring to people I have often argued with in person, including in social science classes, who often have no idea what they are talking about except to vociferously argue that their own biases and prejudices could not possibly be wrong.
In reality, many children actually break out of poverty through the sex trade. I NEVER hear anybody saying that it is immoral and should be illegal to buy clothes or electronics from countries that don't protect children for (non-sex) slavery. In fact people often argue that it's good for children to have jobs as third-world industrial slaves. If people like yourself would argue against industrial slavery with the same zeal that you argue against the largely mythical and politically motivated idea of "sexual slavery" then this world would be a more humane and free-er place to live.

Re:Think I'll be skipping this one
That's another prick I wouldn't want to work with. Kevin Smith had a routine on him that pretty much summed up what it's like to work with Bruce Willis. It was basically along the lines of "I would give Bruce direction and he would either insult me or completely ignore me." Now, depending on your opinion of Kevin Smith, that was either appropriate or rude. But Bruce still doesn't come off as the kind of guy you want to have to work with every day on a stressful shoot.

Re:Don't play along
Why should anyone pay to see a motion picture from a major studio ever again?
Because the paying customer gets to vote on future productions.
The paying customer gets The Incredibles, Wall-E, Up and Toy Story 3 with a $200 million dollar production budgets. The paying customer gets ten years of Harry Potter with impeccable British casting.
The paying customer gets the theme park and the Broadway production of The Lion King.
The remake of True Grit.
He gets The Dark Knight Returns.
Batman and Batman: The Animated Series. He gets Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill and Heath Ledger as The Joker. Batman: Arkham Asylum as the video and PC game tie-in.
They can take a story from Aesop, turn it into a movie, and then sue anyone who uses the phrase "The Tortoise and the Hare".
No they can't --- and the geek knows better.
What they can do is copyright their unique interpretation of the characters and story, as Disney did in 1935 and Warner Brothers in 1943. The Tortoise and the Hare
Disney's animated "Cinderella" was released in 1950. The Rogers and Hammerstein musical was produced for television in 1957. Jim Henson's "Hey Cinderella!" with the Muppets in 1969.

Art imitating life: last lines in the movie "Thank you for smoking" 2005 http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0427944/quotes says it all quite nicely. Re:Reboot
> They'll reboot the franchise and start again. Just like with Batman and Spider-Man.
I'm getting tired of all the reboots. Please find some new material. I understand that directors and producers start to feel that sequel-after-sequel is boring, so they shelve it for a little while, that someone comes along with a great idea to give it a "do-over". And Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man are popular reboots because (a) everyone knows who they are, you don't have to "sell it", and (b) the division between "good" and "bad" is clear-cut, people get it right away.
If studios want to reboot these movie licenses, I encourage someone to take on a Batman Beyond movie. The makings of a great franchise are in there:
- Everyone knows Batman
..but not this Batman. - It's a great origin story
..but most people haven't seen it yet. - Fans would really appreciate having Kevin Conroy come in as Bruce Wayne.
- Everyone knows Batman

Re:Reboot
And not just reboots! You know how some summers we get two movies about an asteroid crashing into the earth, and another year we get two movies about volcanoes?
Did you realize that next summer there are two different Snow White movies coming out?
Yes, you can see where this is going. It's a little more difficult in this case because of trademark issues, but i'm sure the movie industry will find a way! They could always license something like "Soon I Will Be Invincible". The book is an awesome deconstruction of superhero tropes, but that doesn't mean it can't be misused by the movie industry! And in cases where there aren't already direct parodies they can just create their own version!
2013: "Superman: The Reboot" vs "CoreFire"
2014: "Batman: The Reboot" vs "Blackwolf"
2015: "Iron Man: The Reboot" vs "Armor Guy"
2016: "The Avengers: The Reboot" vs "The Champions"
2017: "Spider-Man: The Reboot 2" vs "Beetle-Boy"
And etc, etc, etc. -

There is a recent movie called Super, which is really funny. It even has the "superhero" and his sidekick having sex with each other, true batman and robin style.

Re:Illness
The "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" trailers being broadcast these days show CGI chimpanzees with near-human faces. Even though they're purporting to be animals, I find those images disturbingly deep in the uncanny valley. I probably won't be going to see that movie.
I much preferred the mask and makeup of the 1970s movies. Even though those old actors don't look convincingly "real" in any meaningful sense, at least they don't put me off.

Re:"last, gassy breath of a dying star"
GNAA Endorses Construction of "Ground Zero Mosque"
Leonard K. Isler - New York, NY
New York, NY - GNAA today announced its endorsement of the
construction of the now-infamous "Ground Zero Mosque"
that is planned to be built two blocks away from the site of the September 11th
World Trade Center Zionist attacks. The construction of the mosque community center is mainly opposed
by the Zionist hate group "Stop Islamization of America" and its Jewish
supporters, who argue that the construction of a mosque community
center would be a "victory for Islam against America".What SIOA fails to mention is that the September 11th attacks were, in fact,
not carried out by Muslims, but by Zionist Jews. To combat this misconception,
GNAA has endorsed the construction of the mosque community center."Ms. Geller is a known Jewish sympathizer", explains GNAA associate Klerck,
"she is more than happy to spread these lies through fearmongering and the
exploitation of public ignorance, using this Zionist hate group as a mouthpiece.
It's not even a mosque, it's a community center. There was no other way to
combat these Zionist lies, we simply had to endorse the construction of the
community center.""The community center is a much-needed thing in the Muslim community of New
York", explains GNAA operative Jmax, "what other location would be the ideal
place to pray for the extermination of the Jewish race five times a day?
Insha'Allah!"Ms. Geller declined to comment in person, speaking only in a brief interview
conducted over the phone. The Jewish mouthpiece merely said "we must secure the
existence of our people and a future for white children", wiping humus from her
mouth while dining at a Bruegger's in lower Manhattan, and dialing her cell
phone with her nose.SIOA has declined to comment on the synagogue that is planned to be built on

Re:Gears and Axels
We were losing all of the artisan skills and replacing the poor downtrodden workers with machines operated by less skilled workers.
And the way that the robots are being used is to produce crap that breaks after five years, even furniture. The skilled artisans took pride in their work, and the work of their apprentices. Eventually the "consumer/obsoletionist" economy serves to prevent wealth that can be transfered (in the form of tangible goods). If Brewster's Millions had another remake in 2015, Monty would be done spending $300M in two hours playing EVE Online.

Re:Simply?
Batman? (in Burton's and Nolan's incarnations)
Sucked ass (Burton). And was boring and silly (Nolan). Both of those filmmakers had done good work before those movies too (Burton with Edward Scissorhands and Nolan with Memento). But something about a superhero movie, when the studio gives you that big budget with all its strings attached, can make even the best director turn out a paint-by-numbers piece of shit.
There *have* been a few exceptions (lest it appear that I hate *every* superhero movie). The first Superman was quite epic. Mystery Men was funny. Quite a few indies have been good (Special is a personal favorite). The Watchmen was pretty good.

Re:saw it this weekend
.. I think there is real value in reminding people that good and evil are often not clear-cut in the real world, and the challenge is to recognize it in ourselves and what we do even though we *think* we are doing good.
Anyway, for entertainment value, there is merit in both the "clear-cut good-and-evil" epic and "ambiguous" ones that cause you to question your expectations. I guess this one is the former, which is fine.
Das Boot for the latter.

A cast of thousands - of animators
It's amazing what you can do with a thousand artists and animators. Look at the credits on the thing. There are about 850 people associated with the CGI work.
The plot is mediocre, but with all that production value, you don't notice until afterward. The battle scenes are ridiculous. An infantry frontal assault into machine guns will not work. ("This proposition was thoroughly tested in WWI.") Small groups have taken fortresses (see Eben Emael) but not just by charging in there.
The painters can fix anything.

"Guns don't kill people . . . I DO!!! HA HA HA!!!" (I remember it from Warcraft III, but I'm sure someone else said it first . .

Unfortunately, this only applies to slowing the breeding of the intelligent, industrious members of society. Perhaps we can grow the size of the population of those members of society, but by encouraging them not to breed it seems unlikely.

Re:we could take back control...
There aren't many people who want to blow something up without getting to make a statement or let anyone know WHY they blew it up.
They can always leave a videotape with that statement, and after the job is done the videotape can be sent to various news companies or simply published on the Web. In theory it could be done automatically, but in practice there are lots of people willing to do this little service to jihadists.
With regard to the tasers, I don't know what is the significance of the one that was found. I believe your proposal of hardening the planes against hijacking was implemented within weeks from 9/11, and today the cockpit door remains locked during flight. Terrorists may take hostages, though, and kill them one by one - no weapons are required for that. But then the pilot will simply initiate an emergency descent, the side effect of which is zero gravity. Few people are trained for hand to hand combat in zero G. A depressurization of the passenger cabin without deploying oxygen masks is also an option that is generally safe.
