So this kid builds this amazing thing and he wins second place in the International Intel Science and Engineering Fair last May in Cleveland.

What won first place, you might ask? According to Intel's page on it, there were in fact 3 winners. One developed a new method for determining the distance of asteroids from Earth, another developed a program that may one day enable a person with muscular disabilities to use brainwaves to control a computer keyboard, and the third set out to solve how to treat cancer patients effectively without destroying their healthy cells.

I wouldn't put much blame on GNU. Fortran 77 was a fairly unpleasant language, even before GNU existed. Compiler extensions sometimes helped but weren't too great for portability.

Not that I don't want to see a GNU Fortran 95, but if you can tolerate free as in beer software, Intel makes their fortran compiler available for free for noncommercial use on Linux: IFC

There is also the F programming language which is a (mostly) tastefully selected subset of Fortran 95: F. Mostly it just throws out redundant features and stuff inherited from Fortran 77. It's a little picky in a teaching-language sort of way and takes some getting used to, but I have ported code to F without pulling my hair out. And the code did end up a bit clearer for the changes.

1. Before you start beating up on Indians, remember that it's American managers that do the outsourcing, and the ones that benefit the most.
2. If the Tata company didn't hire him in US because he was American, he could (and should) take legal recourse.
3. You can work in India as an American. Thousands of other Americans do, even in high tech jobs. You need to :
a. Get a job in an Indian company. Like Intel :-)
b. Apply for a 'business visa for employment at your local Indian embassy/consulate
And go.

The economy sucks, but that doesn't mean you put the blame on other people who like you are trying to work for a living.

This goes to the heart of Moore's Law. Moore's Law isn't about transistor size per se. Rather, it's about the number of components that can be built on an integrated circuit at minimum cost.

In his original paper, Moore examines the effects the defect density (the number of defects in the silicon per unit area) and the size of the chip have on the economics of chip production. As you make larger and larger chips, you can put more and more transistors on them. However, the wafers have unavoidable defects in them; a physically larger chip is therefore more likely to contain one or more of the fatal defects, and be worthless.

Moore's key insight (and one that is usually overlooked) was that at any given level of technology (i.e., lithography or transistor size) there is an economically optimum number of components (almost exclusively transistors, today) per chip--that is, a number of components that minimizes the manufacturing cost per component (see the first figure of his paper). If the chip is too small, you spend too much time handling and packaging too many chips, driving up costs; if the chip is too big, the yield is low due to the wafer defects, and costs are driven up again. Crucially, Moore noted that this economically optimum number of transistors increases markedly over time, as integration technology improves; this led to his more famous second figure, showing the base 2 log of the number of components per integrated function growing without bound over time (and doubling every year, a slope that has since been reduced to doubling every 18-24 months). What is unstated in the figure itself is that this represents the economically optimum number of components per integrated fuction.

So the short answer to your question is that a chip 3 inches on a side could be made, but the yield would be so low, due to the unavoidable defects in the silicon wafer itself, that it would be fabulously expensive. It would be cheaper to make several smaller chips perform the same function, which is what is done today, if you stop to think of how many different chips are in the average PC.

Moore's paper is a marvel of prognostication; he notes in it, among many other keen insights:

Clearly, we will be able to build such component-crammed equipment. Next, we ask under what circumstances we should do it. The total cost of making a particular system function must be minimized. To do so, we could amortize the engineering over several identical items, or evolve flexible techniques for the engineering of large functions so that no disproportionate expense need be borne by a particular array [i.e., chip design]. Perhaps newly devised design automation procedures could translate from logic diagram to technological realization without any special engineering.

I believe companies are looking at similar strategies to provide internet access to those not covered by cable or DSL. I think they want to use 802.16, however. See an Intel white paper for more info. The routing stregies developed at MIT may be very applicable to this technology.

The original text was about transistors, it's true. But later it was generalized. I'd better cite it from the latest Halloween document:

I think not. 10 GbE hasn't exactly taken the world by storm and it's been around for over a year now.

I agree wholeheartedly. Not only is demand for 10 GbE optics (here, here, and here) weak -- it took approximately 2 years for IEEE to ratify the standard (802.3ae).

I decided to read thru the Intel IA-32 Architecture Software Developer's Manuals (3vols) and the Optimization Guide (all available for FREE from intel's website -- either in pdf or in hardcopy). Volume 3 covers systems programming issues -- if you can get thru this volume, kernel programming will be a piece of cake. If you can get thru all 3 volumes plus the optimization guide, any documentation on various kernels will be vastly easier to follow.
Similar manuals covering Intel's Itanium architecture are also available for free as well.

There's profit in making plug-in drives expensive. Look what happened to Device Bay, the standard for plug-in FireWire drives and drive bays. Adaptec hated it, because it would have killed their profitable SCSI board market.

I was able to find this document (PDF warning) that doesn't speak about volume, but does tell exactly what each Fab does and on what process. Fabrication of logic products (which I assume to mean processors and such) is done at the following facilities:

As someone else already pointed out, almost all of Intel's manufacturing is in the US.

Look here. The facilities outside the US are mostly assembly, while processors and such are made at the FABs in Oregon, California and Arizona.

The main area in which we saw benefit was switching from the Portland Group Fortran Compiler to the Intel Fortran Compiler, which cut the timestep (simulation time/real time) nearly in half.

Every cluster in the department is assembled from commodity x86 components. Groups here have been moving from proprietary Unix architectures to Linux/x86 systems and clusters. Our group started out on RS/6000s, then moved to SPARC, and is now moving to x86. In terms of price/performance there really is no comparison.

As for TCO, the lifetimes of clusters here are relatively short, one or two years at the most. Thus a high initial outlay cannot be set by lower cost of operation.

Well, it might be based on the PIII and has adopted some parts of the P4. But it has some more radical changes.

It has more in common with Transmeta than one might think. It features Micro-Op Fusion (TM)(R)(C). After translating the Ops into muOps they are reassembled to, how do they call them? Not-LIW, no.., ah.. Macro-instruction, which can be executed more efficiently.

I had printed out the PDFs a while back (at work, thankfully, not at home) and had them bound, but the binder fscked up...the larger volumes were split into two or three parts, and I think one of them was bound on the wrong edge. Now I can get properly-bound editions for free...w00t!

Though based on the last half of your post, you were wondering about desktop processors, in which case the answer probably goes something to the effect of, "Apple has had the G5 for about a month now, AMD will have the Athlon 64 in a month and a half, and we have nothing. Better up the P4 clock rate to 5 GHz in the next 6 months and pray Joe Idiot still thinks it's faster." Just my assumption at the next Intel marketing move.

The P4 based celerons have 128K of l2 cache just like the original celeron 300a. Only the FCPGA2 ( last of the P-III) based celerons had 256K of cache.

Optimizing for the northwood P4 which has 512K of L2 cache and then running the resulting code on a 128K L2 celeron does impact performance a lot.

... but I do with they'd picked a different format name. AVS is also the name of an ancient video format from the early 1990s, supported by Intel's ActionMedia II boards. Back in the day, it rocked all over AVI and Quacktime.

This isn't going to cause confusion oh noooo. Can't see intel being too happy about their use of the AVS name for their standard either.

Ethernet? No. FireWire is designed for hubless, daisy-chainable, high speed, peer-to-peer device communications and control from the ground up. And you are incorrect about the distance limitations. Feel like you need TCP/IP specifically? No problem.

This was what FireWire was made for. Unfortunately, its adoption and use has been crippled by an entertainment industry deathly afraid of the prospect of 100% digital transport, copies, recording, and manipulation by the end customer. What a shame.

• the Computer Museum History Center in Mountain View is probably the best collection of computers since the 50's.
• Intel has a museum at it's San Jose campus.
• Also dont miss a visit to Weird Stuff in Sunnyvale.

Just for comparison, Intel lists the 2.4GHz P4 (non hyperthreading with the 533FSB) as having a 59.8W "thermal design power",which is the max ammount of waste heat the unit generates, so the chip's actuall power consumption is going to be a bit higher.

You are partially correct. Intel did make a Pentium 4 1.3GHz. As for performance, you may be right. I could not find any direct reviews of those two processors going head to head so it's hard to tell. Indirectly we can compare the Celeron vs Duron then the Duron vs Athlon then Pentium 4 vs Athlon. But this only underscores my point, even though we both speak the jargon, there is confusion as to the understanding of the subject.
