Very Plausible
This possibility is very plausible. I went scuba diving once with the guy from the EPA who discovered toxins released into the air by carpets. He got death threats from the carpet industry.
More research is needed, but it would not surprise me for this link to be real. Given that knowledge of gases and toxins from man made fibers in carpet, its not hard to believe that the Vinyl flooring could cause similar problems.
On a side note, some areas are banning vinyl mini blinds because they contain lead.

Is lead in vinyl flooring also?

re who's stronger: Bzzzzt! Try Again."men are stronger than women"
Nope. Sorry, Charlie, not so fast. Men have better upper body strength. Women, by and large have greater flexibility. Men have larger muscle mass. Women do better at high G-forces. And so on. Both have advantages for not only different aspects of in-person combat but for other types of frontline jobs. Some experts have been saying that women, once we know how to accomodate them, will turn out to be better fighter pilots. Jeebus! Heinlein was pointing this out in Starship Troopers in the fifties. This is nothing new.
In other cases, I agree that there are physiological differences, but there, too, it gets kinda messy and the wise experts agree that in some ways what we're seeing is data from male athletes, who have at least five thousand years of expertise behind their training techniques, and women, whose techniques have only been getting suited to their bodies in the past forty years.
I'm a big, hearty fella. Probably bigger than you. And I have very clear memories of sparring sessions where a tiny woman used her superior agility to simply not be where I hit. I went for her, she dropped, rolled, came up somewhere else. And part of it was simply that she was down below where I was used to striking a given blow.
And moving on from there, have you seen all the recent studies about "mean girls"? Funny thing, now that we're finally starting to get useful data, waddayaknow, women aren't always "nicer" than men, they just conceal the blow better. As with my old sparring partner, they hit ya where you're not looking. If you think that this isn't applicable to warfare then you don't know a lot about war.
Lastly, you think that we're "being pussies" because women have a responsible role in society? What a load of crap! The U.S. was letting France and England push us around for years before and after 1812. Korea seized and killed the crew of the Sherman and it took us eleven years, until 1871, iirc, to get around to reprisals. The "backwoods" Seminoles and Cajuns kicked the ass of all Federal interlopers in the Florida swamps for decades before the "revenooers" just gave up and left them alone. Shit, son, there was a period that we were afraid that Venezuala's navy was going to kick our butt. Never in our history, not under Teddy Roosevelt, not under Jackson, have we had a White House as belligerent as the one we've got right now. Why do we have to play it safe with Iran? A.) All of our troops are committed to Iraq and other "War on Terror" stuff to the point that we no longer have, for example, a full strength available Rapid Deployment Force. B.) Ahmedinijad was screwing around, like Quaddaffi before him, as many foreign policy people have suspected all along, C.) England, hard though you may it find to understand, actually is a sovereign nation with their own foreign policy and military and everything. It's not our job to get their soldiers back. D.) IRAN HAS NUKES, YOU DIMWIT!
Your premise is faulty, your data is false, and your conclusions are invalid. Here's a nickel, boy. Buy a clue.

Re:.NET
Money can't buy happiness. studies have shown that true happiness is worth a TON of money. This study shows that going from having sex once a month to once a week is - in terms of a person's overall happiness - approximately equal to getting a $50,000 pay raise at work.
Although the "120 mile" thing is a factor in terms of living, family, wife/kids if you have any - if it's just a consideration of money and happiness, the Perl job FTW. I'm at a job now that I love - and it's mostly because I asked almost every person in the company (when they say "do you have any questions for me?") are you happy here? When every single person said it was the best job they'd ever had, I took it, over another offer for slightly more money.
While weekends will always win, smiling when you get up in the morning because you're going to a job you love is worth a lot more than that extra 40% increase - and I'll bet you can get the Perl job to come up a little bit.

Re:Whats wrong with hygiene? That's if you're not counting all the piss and dried up semen.
If that's really a problem, then a little review might help.
But to address your points seriously, urine is composed of plasma, uric acid, and other elements that your kidneys filter out. It doesn't smell good, but it's not ridden with bacteria. Semen won't produce a good bacterial culture either, and I'd like to think that most people try to avoid cumming all over their toilet seats anyways.
Then it's a pity most toilet seats are made out of plastic or wood.Even on that note, it's really the same. A lot of toilet seats are plastic, but that isn't really hospitable to bacteria either. Most wooden toilets seats are treated, but even if you had some old piece of driftwood with a hole carved in it, it doesn't change the necessity bacteria have to consume nutrients. If you have a constantly warm, steamy bathroom, and you came all over the untreated wooden seat on a regular basis, and the bacteria were able to get everything they need from the protein, then you might have a problem. But, that's hardly the case in a majority of bathrooms.

Think of the children!Maybe it would be a Good Idea(tm) to look into fixing the underlying social problems which lead to the formation of these gangs of murderous tweens, rather than focusing on a path of oppression which is likely to exacerbate the problem, as they mature into adulthood?

Re:And another thing
You want facts?
1. 1 in 4 Americans has a sexually transmitted disease.
2. Studies have shown that the use of condoms decrease the likliehood of getting sexually transmitted diseases by 70%.
Combine these two numbers .25 * .30
You still have a .075 (7.5% chance) of getting an STD from a new partner, and that's only if you always use condoms.
Also, in your post you stated "some people are happy waiting for marriage, but obviously the vast majority in our culture are not." There's a problem with your logic there. You assume that just because people are having sex before marriage then they are happy to do so. Another study showed that among those that have engaged in premarital sex, 40% of them regretted the decision. -

You are linking to an "official page" at that is sited at http://pages.ivillage.com/americans4america/id20.
h tml? It seems odd that an "official page" is hosted on what appears to be a free commercial hosting site http://ivillage.com/. Additionally, this "official page" has a Lycos People Search ad banner - I didn't realize that the State of Ohio was running ads on its official sites.
Perhaps most interesting: the "official page" is the creation of "Americans for America" (a name that seems designed to be possibly the most bland and unobjectionable label that an advocacy group could possibly concieve of) - and at the bottom of the page you linked to they state:
"All links and information herein contained have been provided through online research by a group of concerned citizens of the USA and other countries."
While this may simply be carelessness on the parent's post, the page linked to is very clearly unofficial and loaded with a particular group's advocacy. To represent it as official results is dishonest on the part of the group itself, and either incompetent or dishonest on the part of the parent. -

BitPass trust and legal problemsBitPass has a prominent "Certified by Entrust" logo on their web site. It means very little. Read their certification practices statement, which guarantees almost nothing, disclaims liability for almost all cases, limits liability to $1000 per certificate (i.e. everybody scammed by one site), and even calls for the "relying party" (the customer) to indemnify Entrust.
This is even weaker than Verisign's lower class of SSL certificate. Verisign at least requires a Dun and Bradstreet number.
There are far better seal programs, such as the classic Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval. That's an actual warranty. "If a product bearing the Seal proves to be defective within two years of purchase, Good Housekeeping will replace the product or refund the purchase price." "Entrust" doesn't come anywhere near that.
Then there's the question of whether BitPass is a payment service or a reseller. iBill, for example, is a reseller. When you buy something through iBill, the actual "merchant" is iBill, and if you want a refund, you can get it through iBill's customer service operation. Getting it back from the site operator is iBill's problem, which is why they take a big cut and hold back payments for weeks.
BitPass doesn't seem to be set up that way. BitPass is, in a sense, "selling money" That may create problems. Credit card issuers don't allow merchants to "sell money"; that's a loan, which comes under banking laws. Also, the U.S. Government has a monopoly on money. Casinos in Las Vegas used to take each other's chips, but that was ruled to be a "currency" years ago, and they had to stop.
Worse, the BitPass site does not disclose the name and address of the business before asking for a credit card number. They've set things up so it's hard to get a refund. They don't disclose their refund policy. That's a criminal offense in California (B&P code 17538), where BitPass apparently is located. That's good for six months in jail. Here's the law, which is very specific, so sleazy operators can't hide the required info and claim they comply.

OT - Re:2012
I was worried about that 2012 date myself until I found out why the Maya chose that date as the end of their time. I'm amazed at how much the Maya were able to learn and I believe they had knowledge that we've yet to discover but I'm beginning to believe now that the 2012 date is simply an astronomical event.
The Maya were deeply religious and their religion was based on astronomy. Their convictions led them to construct pyramids so they could see over the jungle canopy to the horizon. It's on the horizon where they could view the rising and setting of the stars, planets, sun, and moon. The thing they discovered that prompted them to set 2012 as an important date is the precession of Earth. As Earth precesses on about a 25,000 year cycle, the sun rises at a slightly different location for each given day of the year. The Maya discovered that they could calculate that movement and believed it held some religious significance.
For all astronomically-based religions, the winter solstice was especially significant, but the Maya saw another significant astronomical feature. They viewed the intersection of the ecliptic (the line the planets, moon, and sun follow) and the galactic plane (as represented by the milky way) as the entry point whereby one could begin the journey along the milky way to the heart of the sky (a dark area near Polaris that used to be at the celestial north pole.) But one could only enter there when an opening was created by another celestial object at the point of the crossroad.
The key thing about the 2012 date is that the Winter solstice of 2012 has the sun rising exactly at the intersection of the ecliptic and the galactic plane. To the Maya, that probably represented the closing of a great cycle after which a new era would be born. In fact, the evidence seems to indicate that they actually worked backwards from December 21, 2012 to determine their current date when the Long Count calendar was created (some say as early as 355 B.C.)
The incredible precision by which they were able to predict astronomical events is uncanny. While our calendar uses clumsy gimmicks like leap years to overcome its inherent flaws, the Mayan calendar was able to accurately predict events thousands of years into the future with perfection and no need for adjustments. If you realize the movement of the Winter solstice sunrise due to precession occurs at a rate of about one degree every 72 years then you can realize the precision it takes to accurately predict such an event.
There is so much valuable knowledge that has been lost due to our destructive and arrogant approach to other cultures and it continues today as we try to eliminate cultures that compete with western values. Maybe one day we'll come full circle and embrace our ancient past just like the sunrise will do on December 12, 2012.

my experiments with indoor plants
For several years now, my friends have watched as I geek out over some house plants. I have had a great deal of fun watching several of my plants grow.
Amaryllis
About 7 years ago, I was given an Amaryllis. A flowering plant that has a bulb. When I received the bulb, it was already on the way to flowering. When it flowered, I took a q-tip and cross polinated the flowers against one another (not sure what the correct term is). I left the flowers on the plant until they dried out and fell off. After a few weeks, the stem on which the flowers grew turned into a small bulb that obviously contained seeds. I have since re-planted the seeds and given away about 10 small amaryllis plants to friends. Unfortunately, I have not been able to watch any of the small plants grow large enough to flower again, but hope to do so with my most recent bunch. I have also had the original large bulbs split into separate bulbs several times. I now have four large bulbs from the original (plus the many small plants that have grown from seed).Ficus
When I finished school, I purchased a small ficus tree. It grew quite well sitting in the window. When it out-grew its pot, I trasferred it into an overly large Rubbermaid container. Once it was in the too-large container, the extra soil space allowed it to grow out of control. As I was living in a small, urban apartment, I decided to plant my own "lawn" in the pot. I was able to sustain a small patch of green grass along with the tree for an entire summer (all indoors). I learned a great deal about small ecosystems (clippings must be VERY small to not matt down new growth) and potting soil from bags (these bags contain bugs- if the plant is indoors, the bugs will be indoors too).Worms
One of the things that I learned from the Ficus-lawn experiment (see above) was that a small potted-plant system does not break down organic matter very quickly. I spoke to several friends, gardeners and academics. They all said that the possibility of getting the lawn clippings to compost properly in the large container was fairly slim. However, they said that if I was interested, I should look into getting some worms to help out. They also said that the worms would help with small bugs. On several occasions, I gathered earthworms that appeared on the sidewalks after rains, but I am not sure that any of them survived for long in the soil system (I believe that worms require fairly loose soil and potted plants generally end up with fairly dense soil).I have also played with various other herbs and flowering plants. I have 4 calla lillies that I have grown from the same cross polination "technique" that I used with the amaryllis described above. The callas live happily in my office windowsill with a cyclomen, hyacinth, and several pots of amaryllis (at various stages of maturity). They all seem happy enough living in a windowsill.
All that said, there is a wealth of information out there on how to grow plants of all varieties. As useful as the information is, I have always found it more interesting to experiment on my own and see how much I recall from high-school biology and geolgraphy courses. A bit of common sense can keep almost any plant alive; a bit of experimentation and work can grow a single plant into many or

Smoke damage
What you have is a really common problem -- smoke is nastier than fire in some ways! -- so teh good news is there is a lot of help available. Even this Heloise I recall reading in the newspaper.
Search the net for info and products. The OxyClean product is a good thing, as is Simple Green, where appropriate, because they're relatively pleasant to work with. I know if you're dealing with rehabbing the house/apartment, but if you do be sure you or the contractor knows about the special challenges in concealing the damage permanently, and getting rid of the smell.
If you have insurance, talk to them about what damaged items it might be better to just declare a total loss and replace.
Condolences. I hope you enjoyed the movie more than I did. :) -

Re:What a jokeYou know, I once cited a study commissioned by the Nixon administration which failed to find a link between pornography and sex crimes. I was much younger then; Now I find it extremely amusing. My english teacher probably thought it was brilliant for someone who chose to argue the devil's advocate point of view to choose something from that funding source.
Anyway, I think it IS likely to cause spontaneous stripping. People are more readily programmed by television than you think. It puts you into an alpha state. (Boy is it hard to find reasonably reputable links about that!) As such, you are more suggestible (it is similar to the state achieved during hypnosis, though with somewhat different results here, we hope.)
Now, am I saying that guys are going to run around raping people because they see more porn? No. In fact, some studies have shown just the opposite. If you don't make people feel guilty about sexual urges they're more likely to beat off and get all that tension out of their system. Then they can just beat women up instead of raping them, like good little Americans. Hey, it works for football stars.
Will there be more unprotected sex? I'm sure there will be more sex, and a certain percentage of it is unprotected. So you could say yes, but probably not. Then again, if you make people horny enough they sometimes skip the protection and move right onto the beast with two backs phase of the evening.
-
No physical mail
So instead they're sending you physical junk-mail or having pop-unders. That's a big improvement.
Fifty percent correct. As a former iVillage consultant, I can tell you that the newsletters and member mailings to which they refer are online-only. It isn't perfect, but it's a nice step forward. -

I recently bought a DC290 and it's been amazing to use. It can take TIFFs and timelapse photos. Its exposure settings let you take pics in near darkness. The built-in scripting language is kick ass - someone even wrote a script which lets you use the focus-laser as a rangefinder. When I view the pics it takes I'm reminded of the scene in Bladerunner when he spends an hour zooming in and out of tiny details in a picture. To download pictures you just plug it in via USB and it appears as an additional HD on your Windows PC. I've heard that you can access it using Unix freeware as well. Also, the first thing everyone says when they see it is, "Wow, it's much smaller than it looked in the ad!"
I scored mine for $560, AFTER tax and shipping. Here's how:
- Go to iVillage and sign up for an account there, using fake info if you want.
- They send you a confirmation email that has a link to promotional deals. Go to that page, and find the link to MobShop.
- Follow their link to MobShop, which sets a cookie. Buy the camera at MobShop, type in the code that iVillage gave you (LIONLAMB when I did it) for your 20% discount, and wait for camera to arrive!
