What, so you could have something happen like what happened in France in 2002?

You have Chirac (right of center by French standards / left wing by US standards), Jospin (left / ultra-left wing) and LePen (far right / fascist) in the "first round". Chirac gets 20%, LePen gets 17%, Jospin gets 16%. Now suddenly the election is between Chirac and LePen, and Chirac is now the shoe-in even though the majority of the voters originally wanted "Anything but Chirac" (sound familiar?).

However, if the comparison were gratitous, then Godwin's Law would need to be enforced.

This idea reminds me of the free online novel Prime Intellect which I can strongly recommend.

This reminds me of a good short sci-fi story called The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect, where an evolving artificial intelligence used CPUs that communicated with each other via a "quantum tunnelling" type technology called the "Correlation Effect".

It's a neat story, which also incorporates Asimov's laws of robotics as a strong basis for the plot.

To sum up the point of my reference, they made full processors with only 3 pins for power, and the chips used the "Correlation Effect" to communicate with each other. I immediately thought of this story when I read this article.

For USians, if you voted for George Bush, and supported republican policy that'd be fixed. He is a supporter of a "loser pays" rule, so Microsoft would end up having to pay all the court and lawyer fees for you after you win. Furthermore it would prevent frivolous lawsuits like SCO v. Linux. Democrats are a staunch hater of such rules.

To call citizens of the United States "American" is to ignore the fact that, technically, Canadians, Mexicans, Brazilians, et al, are also from America.

Well, Poland was occupied (as much as I hate the word and as much as it was expedient, you might have still not liked it)and you had a socialist government forced on you. That's different from the USSR, where there were less reasons to desire political freedom.

There is comparision. Censorship in the US is as bad as it was in the Soviet Union, it's just different. And in practice censorship doesn't really matter as much as the access to media. Yeah, I can bash the American government, but... If I said on Slasdhot that I am thinking (not planning, just entertaining the possibilities) about killing President Bush, and if I lived in the US, I would be visited by the Secret Service in a few days (real story). OK, after a detailed interrogation and background check I would still be free (hopefully), but does the fact that there is "no censorship" compensates for more totalitarian control than ever in the USSR?

And don't tell me the US didn't punish people for producing porn. And don't even start on the discrimination (at least the Soviets didn't lynch Negroes), because this is utter bullshit. Yes, there were cases (like with Chechens, or Turks) in Stalin's time when the state did the discrimination. But in the majority of the cases, especially in the 1960s-1980s, people of other nationalities had as many rights as Russians and as many opportunities to execute their rights. Not to mention that the whole Soviet culture was opposed to discrimination on the very basic level.

That's an easy answer. It's the same answer for any medium's success: a low cost/value ratio.

At the time being, there's little value, and high cost. $250+ for a reader, which uses batteries, for a reader which can only read proprietary book formats is not a reasonable proposition for most people - particularly when you consider that the ebooks themselves cost as much as paperbacks, and sometimes hardcover versions of the novel.

Another thing that hinders the adoption is the lack of a quantifiable physical item when ebooks are purchased. You just get a data file which is easily deleted, lost, or damaged. This isn't appealing to many geeks, let alone the general populace.

No, I don't view ebooks and their readers gaining much acceptance at all, as most people do not read nowadays. They would gain popularity if the media were significantly cheaper (dimes on the dollar), and the media was not provided with a restricted license, I'm sure. Ditto for being able to use the ebook reader to read, say, saved web pages, text files, PDFs, and various other 'standard' file formats - or at least a provision for importing them to the ebook reader format in a non-restrictive manner.

Really, I think the best chance ebook readers have of becoming common, or even popular, is for the ebook reader companies to start talking to course book publishers. These publishers make many, many books which are in publication for a year or two, and then discontinued, only to release a new version with one or two spelling changes, a couple pretty graphs, and a new cover. The old books? They largely get disposed of, I'd imagine. Students are left with a shitty text book and no means by which to get rid of it for reasonable reimbursement.

If I could have an ebook reader which cost me $200ish, and then spend $150-250 a quarter on books (as opposed to the 300-400 I spend now), and possibly get a discount at the end of the quarter for not copying the data off the device (20%, say) on the next quarter's books, I'd do it in a heartbeat, provided the ebook reader was technically mine (not some lease from the school), and I could use it to store any variety of my own books as well (technical documents, novels, etc.).

Granted, I'd only have the ebooks for the quarter, but I'd wager that 90% of the course books out there have little reuse value for the student, let alone for the next person that come along, as there'll likely be another version available. I imagine publishers would like this scenario - a lot - as I can imagine they would save a LOT of money by not having publishing, transport, storage, etc. costs for the millions of text books they make.

Schools (public schools, at least) would also likely benefit, as they could get a license for a book, and use it indefinately, provided they had the readers. If the readers were made of similar sturdyness to an AlphaSmart, i don't see this as being too unlikely a scenario. Battery cost would be negligible, as most students probably don't use their books enough to drain a single AAA battery half way, so there'd not be much recurrent costs. Students could get their work done more quickly (due to search features), and everyone would benefit. (Well, at least in theory - it depends on what the actual purpose of our school system is, I guess.)

At any rate, I'd like an ebook to replace the multiple text books I've got to lug about, personally. I'd be willing to pay roughly the same amount for the ebook reader and the ebooks as I pay for my text books, provided I could add my own data (PDF, txt, whatever) without restrictions. Is anyone out there listening? Market research, hello?

The author of that story is Adam Barr. (Any relation, Joe ?) He worked for Microsoft for 10 years and wrote a book about the experience . . . titled . . . wait for it . . . . BSD licensed code is also in ftp.exe. BSD defenders would offer that as evidence that work done under the BSD license helps make the world a better place, because now MS saved money and has a better ftp. Those who prefer the GPL over the BSD license would offer that as evidence that work done under the BSD license can make the world a worse place -- someone who buys windows cannot get the source code to the ftp.exe on their own machine. THis is the same old argument we've been pounding to death on this list.

The arguments of both sides of this flamewar apply anywhere BSD code is found in windows. You can confirm the existence of such code my mounting a windows partition and executing this command:

Furthermore, far from there being "no truth to this," MS's Proud Servant himself admits MS used BSD code for the TCP/IP stack, specifically for NT 3.1. MS engineers did not seek out BSD code on the BSD web site; they bought the code from a third company, Spider, that had copied and modified the BSD TCP/IP stack.

So not only did Microsoft re-distribute BSD licensed code . . . THEY PAID FOR IT. That is so funny, I think I have to take a break from writing this and get a drink.

Yes, my first post sucked. It was karma whoring at its basest. I've read your entire post and nodded my head. Your post, this article, AndroidCat's reply, and this article have made this teenager slightly less ignorant. Thank you. (I'll be willing to put that in writing if you want.)

Now, here's why I think this article is dangerous, sans my contorted view of Godwin's Rule.

Rather than discuss the negative ramnfications of recording people in public, the ACLU director Barry Steinhardt is quoted as saying "What this demonstrates is that '1984' is now technologically possible."

The problems with this I have are that 75 cameras viewing the public does not demonstrate that 1984's millions of cameras in home and in public are feasable. It does not discuss the negative effects of cameras in public. It stirs fear by using a book as reference, a book that includes torture as a punishment for thought crime.Plus, references to 1984 are almost as done to death as references to Nazis.

In fact, here's a helpful article I wrote describing how to eliminate six nines of all your incoming spam permanently, in a way that is impossible for spammers to circumvent without reading your mind and hacking every person you ever sent email to.

But, really, it doesn't seem like it would be easy to have a Linux Sysadmin's Toolkit CD where you could run programs on a live system (rather than boot into another one like with Knoppix) due to the different systems out there using different distros with different file tree structures and different versions of [g]libc.

Also, most of the tools are so simplistic that it's hardly worth mentioning them. Need to reset a root password and you don't know the current one? Mount the filesystem and edit /etc/shadow. Most things are done using simple tools, rather than complicated applications.

Also, FWIW, screen is likely very useful to many admins. I just find it useful for keeping terminals available without cluttering up my desktop. An added benefit is that I can ssh in from elsewhere and work with them from there, too. I've wanted for a while to fiddle with ratpoison to get a similar effect for X programs.

Whilst you are correct this works for non-interactive processes, you can't use nohup to keep a copy of say, Lynx, running when you logout. Then return to it later and pick off where you left it.

Instead you should look at GNU Screen which allows this and more.

(It's essentially a windowing system for consoles, with the ability to detach and resume at will, and definately one of my top ten Unix utilities).

As for proving a point, I think that using the DMCA is just fine. After all, Amazon is part of the patent problem and if you used Amazon's patents without permission, you could expect that they would have say something about it. If they expect people to observe their patents, they ought to observe the copyrights of others.

Well citizens cannot be kept there without just cause. The detainees (the few that are left) are "Enemy Combatants".

Well, in point of fact, until the supreme court ruling the other day, they essentially could, insofar as the determination was left up to the executive with no judicial oversight. Thankfully, that has been remedied.

They eat well, have a roof over their heads and are unable to participate in terrorist organizations. I dont fully agree with their detention, but it could be worse, they might have just been shot instead of captured.

I certainly don't know for a fact that what you're saying is untrue (it may well be correct), but I don't see how we can be sure. We're talking about people who were held incommunicado (at least until now) without any independant oversight (whether that would be a good idea is a different question). Furthermore, denying people proper sleep, exposing them to extreme temperatures, and giving them "less paletable food" were authorized forms of interogation, according to the Washington Post. So, while it's true (as far as anyone knows) that they're not getting electro-genital torture or something, let's not pretend they are nice and comfy. They are being treated with a lower level of respect and comfort than either domestic criminals or POWs.

Abu Ghraib prisoners were abused, not tortured like they were when Saddam was in power. Their abusers should and will be punished. Their is a fine line between abuse and torture.

No, they did not live up to Saddam, but many of the things they did are considered unacceptable forms of coersion by the US military, because they are too close to "torture" as seen under international law. Some of the things done clearly weren't torture, but others may qualify depending on what definition you use. It is not clear.
