Re:for the new generation
Here are some German Language sites from a site I set up for a German class at my university. Most of the sites have other languages also. (Would link to it, but don't want to get slashdotted, so I just copied the code over.)
German Language Web Sites
leo.org German-English dictionary. Just enter a German or English word in the Search Term box. Note the 3 symbols following the word entered:Press the1stfor grammar information, the 2nd for definition and sample uses, the 3rd for spoken pronunciation.
german.about.com Everything you ever wanted to know about the German language. Includes grammar and vocabulary guides.
travlang.com Click on the German Flag for German words for travel, shopping, dining, directions, etc. Click on a word for pronunciation.
webgerman.com A collection of links on the German language as well as comics, music, and games in German.
freetranslantion.com Type or paste a word or phrase into the box for a free translation between languages by a computer. The computer translations are somewhat crude, but you can also pay for a human translation.

Re:Unheimlich
Unheimlich means Un-(not) heimlich(from heim=home, so maybe homey). Basically feeling not at home. Scary. Often also just "very", like scary big. Related: LEO entry. BTW, LEO is prolly the most comprehensive free German-English dic around

Re:Very bad name!
"Lulu" is the german word for "piss". A french company once tried to sell a perfume called "Lulu" in Germany, and for obvious reasons they failed horribly.
No it's not. In baby-speak perhaps. Aside from the fact that I am german (though maybe a rather sheltered one), neither BabelFish nor LEO support your claim.
(If you don't know the LEO dictionary, you should really give it a spin! Above link points to the english version.) -
Re:i agree ..
I realise this is a bit offtopic, bit I moderated in the discussion on word frequency before I saw your post:
I have to learn German. I need the 86,000 most-commonly used German words. This would give me a nice target of words to get to know in the process of learning it ...
And since I'm also an English speaker in Germany I thought I'd note that typing "word"+"rank"+"german" into google returns plenty of sites including:
http://german.about.com/library/blwfreq01.htm
which only has the top 1000, but that's not a bad start.
In all honesty, I find that the word frequency depends a lot on your environment. Are you speaking in a pub with a bunch of welders or are you reading scientific literature? You'd be much better off just keeping a little notebook and writing down words you see more than once.
I also find that leo http://dict.leo.org/ is pretty good for a lot of stuff that doesn't make it into standard dictionaries.
Good luck,
Tony. -

Re:The Troll Polka: UPDATED by poopbot
* Finally think I have goat sex written correctly in German. I think. Arschficken?
Arschficken mit Ziegen really means assf*cking with goats. If you want goat sex, I'd got with Ziegegeschlecht (to coin a new compound word - why not, it's German afterall). Geschlecht seems to be the preferred equivalent to the english noun sex. -
Re:LEO?
First thing that came to mind was LEO. I too wondered why they'd need a space blimp to transport stuff to them, but, oh well...

original injunctionThe settlement is based on this preliminary injunction from may 30 2003 containing - besides juristic framework - just one sentence:
Der Antragsgegnerin wird [...] verboten, im geschaeftlichen Verkehr die Behauptung zu verbreiten, dass LINUX-Betriebssysteme unrechtmaessig erworbenes Eigentum von SCO UNIX beinhalten und/oder dass Endanwender, die LINUX einsetzen, fuer die damit verbundenen Schutzrechtsverletzungen der SCO Intellectual Properties haftbar gemacht werden koennen.
I try to translate, but beware my english (maybe someone can do a better job on this):
[SCO Group GmbH] must not spread the assertion that linux operating systems contain unlawfully obtained property of SCO UNIX and/or that end users could get hold responsible for implicated intellectual property infringement implicated by using linux.

Email as permanent record system...For me, email is my way of having a permanent record system. For me, that's very helpful. If someone tells me something random, and I know I probably won't remember, I have them email me, and then I have a permanent record of it (I never delete emails). Phone numbers, ideas, papers, it's all there. The search function in Mail (I use a Mac) seems to nail down what I am looking for pretty quick too.
Also, totally unrelated, I've done two internships in Germany, and without this dictionary I would not have been able to figure out half the things I did. The forums there were very helpful too. So that's how technology has helped me, and I accept it, I am not a luddite.

Mr. GehorsamMr Gehorsam said the world being created will not be a game but instead will be a "massively multi-user persistent environment" that will model real world physics as closely as possible.
Gehorsam is German and means dutiful, obedient, submissive (taken from leo.org) So it's like calling the evil guy "Mr. Evil"

My translation
(Disclaimer: Neither German nor English is my 1st language. I recommend dict.leo.org)
The quote is discussing the improved offer made by IBM/SuSE after Ballmers visit. It mentions where the new offer shaves off costs:
Considerable savings were found since
[...]
based on its competences in questions of desktop migration The SuSE company was basically prepared to warrant significantly lower costs of PC-emulation (VMWare) through deployment of alternative emulation products or migration methods.[1]
[1] Partially because of caution in calculations the client study had assumed that 80% of the desktops would have to be equipped with VMWare for a duration of 4-5 years.
My interpretation: the 80% mentioned come from the orgiinal "client study". SuSE has said "We'll guarantee that you can save money by using win4lin/wine/whatever". The quote doesn't give the impression that VMWare would completely replace the Linux desktop. I'd rather bet that they'll be using it for legacy programs, but I'd have to read the client study to find out. -

Re:Different places have different ideas
Yes, but they do this for years now. It's not that every individual swastika has the right to appeal.
They do have the right to appeal, they just don't make use of it because they'd lose anyway.
I dunno nothin' about this attainder thingy (and my dictionary is no help), but I don't see where Art. 19 applies. Where is the individual case that is not allowed?
Bill of Attainder = Parlamentsverurteilung in German (dict.leo.org translation, it's a very recommendable German - English dictionary btw). If the legislative passed a law that is meant to decide a single case, that would be called a bill of attainder.
I'm aware of the fact that the Düsseldorf government did not pass a law, but still what they do is similar in effect, isn't it? You're right in that it might be compliant with the letter of the law, but I think that it violates at least the spirit of the constitution (as I interprete it, that is) by banning things without a court order and treating a whole domain as if it were a single publication, which it may or may not be.

Re:Submarines?
Actually, that [navy.mil] you linked spells it both ways on the same page... "German Navy installed the first schnorkel snorkel)", but then futher down the page, "1,000 feet and included a schnorchel (snorkel)". A simple search on an online german dictionary however seems to favour Schnorchel over Schnorkel... because Schnorchel means snorkel [diving related] while Schnorkel is listed as something like twirl...

best translation service I know (Re:Schadenfreude)is on dict.leo.org. According to them it's
On this page you will find the developers and maintainers of the legendary LEO German/English Dictionary. In 1995 this Dictionary was founded by Achim Jung, a former student and scientific assistant of the Technical University of Munich. Since then it is online, available free of charge to every internet user world-wide. In the tradition of the pioneers of the Dictionary all members of the LEO Dictionary Team - supported by the diligent helpers - currently make big efforts to permanently improve and extend this service. So we can provide you (further on) the world's biggest and fastest help on English-German translations.

Spellchecking
Spellchecking is for imagination impaired drones who wouldn't know poetry if a Dr. Seuss book fell off a shelf and fractured their skull.
Granted that this signature is quite funny, but English is not my first language and sometimes I have to look up a word in the dictionary. Have you ever tried to look up a misspelled word? Try to guess what the correct spelling could be?[Sorry, but I know that this is offtopic. Moderate it down if you feel so.]

Re:RMS, you darn hypocrite! You can call Stallman a lot of lot of things, some of which I even might agree with (bone-headed comes to mind). However, he is about the least hypocritical person on this or any other known planet. While the FSF is selling the emacs manual (as well as emacs itself), it is freely available from this ftp site or any number of other GNU mirrors, and comes with the permission to copy and modify.
Yes, you can I print verbatim copies of RMS's Emacs manual and sell it for less than the FSF charges for the original. However, RMS is of course free to sign or not sign any copy, depending on his fancy. In fact, what he did is quite common: Using your popularity to raise money for your favourite charity.

I love the idea of MacOS X, Quartz, and all sorts of 16-register SIMD on the PowerPC 7400"G4"'s AltiVec unit.... but that candy-coated Hello Kitty interface isn't for me. I'm sure the existing 2.5 Million iMac users would love it though. But for me, I'd like an alternative.
Here's a screenshot of OpenStep 4.0. The shelf (bottom) is sort of messy in this screenshot and OS 4.2 has a nicer shelf look to it.
