from my experience over the last month as well as what has been said on linuxquestions, is seemes like SuSE may have made a mistake by only including the lates versions of a lot of the bigger software packages ie. KDE 3.2.1, Samba3, etc. but also listening to a lot of the posts on linuxquestions it seems that most of the bugs are related to KDE 3.2.1 as you noted. others are changes in the way things are handled, especialy in Samba 3, and the 2.6 kernel.

I've also been running 9.1, and generally I've had the best experiences yet of any of their releases. It's excellent overall.
As you suggest, however, the support for GNOME apps in this release is possible the worst ever. I've found that gnome apps all look far too small, and I cannot find any way of changing them.

That's fine, but GNOME doesn't ship with SUSE 9.1! Last time I looked, it's not even available on their site!
I know I could get GNOME from elsewhere, but I really find it unacceptable that a major distribution fails to make available packages for one of the two major GUIs. It might be ok if they got the apps to run correctly in some way, but they don't.

You didn't pay for Mandrake, so your "Mandrake charges 66 per year" argument is completely irrelevant. If you can't download it, then you can't install it, so you obviously don't know if it works, or not. Go ahead and try to use the FTP installer when you have a NIC that is technically supported but requires a 1-line hack to the Tulip driver to make it work.
The Microsoft MN-130 adapter came out a year ago, and the fix was discovered on November 6, 2003. Why is it that six months and a major kernel release later, this fix still isn't included in a stock kernel?

You can turn off spatial mode in nautilus in 2.6. There's a GConf setting to revert back to browser mode as default (search the net for it). Also note there is a file browser nautilus app in fedora 2 test in the menu.

um, this man gets paid to work with computers?
it looks like he just hasn't get the ALSA daemon started, all he needs to do is go to "XYZ" distro's service/daemon control applet, and set it to start at boot.
it's not any more complicated than it would be in windows, and it's a hell of a lot easier than trying to get cheap nasty soundcards to work with windows, even the latest version. believe me, i've just been trying.

It obviously is about "XYZ's weaknesses in tech support", no self-repecting linux techie would screw up the xfree config because of a sound problem.

Just don't use the installer to repartition your disks for a dual-boot system or your MBR will be so screwed you won't be able to boot Windows unless you force your HDD to LBA mode in the BIOS, and will need to overwrite your MBR and reformat everything to get it back to normal (unless you're lucky enough to have Partition Magic). I'm never looking at Mandrake again. It's probably not even their fault, but screw it, I'm bitter. (Installed Gentoo instead. Happy now.)

Having never owned a PC until my current one(800mhz PIII) I can't tell you authoritatively how well any of these linux distribution work. However, the following distros are supposed to work well on your target systems:- Peanut Linux sounds pretty good

This is a live linux distribution which means that it runs off the CD. It's supposed to be a little difficult to install try following these directions:To install Damn Small Linux to the HD...

Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to SU root outside X.
Type "dsl-hdinstall" (a mod off Knoppix's knx-hdinstall)...
Follow the prompts... (cfdisk, etc.......)
I've done it & tested it -- works. --bosspacman - Basic Linux might work but it might be difficult if you don't know linux very well.
- I hear RedHat's 6.0 distro is light weight too if you can find it.

Amen to that! You pay for Windows in cash. You pay for Open Source Software by learning a little about it. Learning is an investment and it pays dividends in time.
If something took you ages to find out, it's common courtesy to share that information with others so nobody else has to expend that much effort ever again. Post about it on your own web site {where Google will find it, eventually} and on the LinuxQuestions Wiki. E-mail the package author -- it could be a simple, honest omission; after all, what's obvious to one person isn't necessarily obvious to everyone.
These people have given you all this software out of the goodness of their own hearts, and in good faith that you will find it useful. They haven't asked you for anything in return. Even if you're not a programmer and so can't improve on the actual code yourself, nobody is stopping you from working on improving on the documentation. -

As an XP user I tried switching to Mandrake:
I heard Mandrake was one of the easiest distros to use in terms of configuration and drivers. Sp I gave 9.2 a shot after getting the isos on FTP sites.
THE GOOD
1. Much prettier interface. Everything from the icons to the taskbar, to Konqueror was top notch
2. All my hardware worked right away; sound card, mouse, keyboard, video card, with exception of my Palm Pilot cradle. I had some monitor problems as you'll read about as well.
3. Speedy as hell. You'd run a program and it would actually run within a reasonable time.
4. Internet worked right off the bat. Awesome.
5. The video player played a lot of files easy-peasy and I didn't have to fight with codecs.
6. I could still access my Windows folders. Another great benefit.
THE BAD
1. My mouse was uncontrollable. XP has both a speed and acceleration option that is great for mouse control. The mouse options box in Mandrake didn't have these options and it was frustrating to use the mouse, even after twinking these settings for an hour.
2. By far the biggest problem: Installing programs. In XP it's as easy as double clicking an icon and picking a directory. Not so with Linux. You can read my post on the newbie forums
here.
I have no idea where anything installs to, nor the best way to uninstall things. Inevitably I have to use the command line. Even as an X-MSDOS user I found it very frustrating.
3. Despite claims of stability, Konqeror crashed repeatedly. I can not say why.
4. After installing a program, finding where it installed to would be like pulling teeth. Making a shortcut would be even worse.
5. Installing the correct driver for my soundcard was very complicated, even after reading the INSTALL file. I eventually gave up.
6. I got a sync out of range message when I first tried running Mandrake. I left the monitor settings on default during install. This took hours to discover and fix.
But above all installing programs is a pain. This means, once the desktop is setup, Mandrake is a dream. But configuring it requires far too much expertise, at least it seems like it. I found myself posting time and time again on the forums. They were very helpful people but their answers often left me more confused than I started.
I'm not trying to flame, just provide constructive criticism and ways to help make Mandrake better. I wish them the best. -

Re:K3BThat's a new one, I've been using k3b to do just that for over a year now. There are quite a few dependancies and if your using RedHat you might not have MAD installed, MAD is a high-quality MPEG audio decoder. You might try a emailing the authors directly or browse the FAQ at K3b.org.
I'm sure someone in the 'community', can answer your questions. You could post a question at Linuxquestions.org. Good Luck! I think you'll find k3b a great little program once we get your problem solved.

Re:closed source != bad alwaysDammit! This driver still mis-identifies a VIA KT400 chipset. I'll have to hack the module source, once again. This pisses me off because this VIA KT400 based board is supposed to be linux certified. ATI should concentrate on these "linux certified" boards first. BTW, here is a link to the modification.
Do you remember your monitor's refresh rates and hsync? I recommend backing up your old XF86Config so you can modify the monitor section back to what your installation detected.
Redhat/Fedora both use the XFS font server. This driver seems to have trouble with it. This isn't that big a deal since I can stick my fontpath info in the XF86Config file, but I'd really rather use XFS then just stick FontPath "unix:/7100" in the XF86Config file.
Overall, I'm glad ATI is releasing updated drivers, I just wish they'd polish up their installation script and kernel module a tad.

I personally have never run into a wiki that has information that detailed. Mostly it's very general, completely uninformative junk.
Take a look at this entry for KDE.
Utterly useless for pretty much anything. It's also not very unbiased: "And believe me, it still is Kool, now more than ever with the new KDE 3.2, which offers its users plenty of eye candy." While I agree with that statement, it has no place in something that's supposed to be "informative." It sounds more like a sales pitch.
I don't get the fascination with wikis. I haven't found them to be very useful at all. They always seem to be like reading through sales brochures.

wiki vs TLDP
I have been using Wikipedia for a while and one of the biggest selling point IMO is the great browsing experience. I often find myself actually surfing again by going from hyperlink to hyperlink, trying to soak up all the information, something I have stopped doing a while ago with most other webpages. There is lot of very good, indepth content on there.
TLDP is a bunch of mostly technical articles (HOWTO's, guides, FAQs and man pages) that are very usefull, but don't really form a coherent whole. It would be wonderfull to have a somewhat more encyclopedia oriented linux documentation to consult, that is updated consistently to boot. A encyclopedia aproach also alows you to cover a wide spectrum of topic, from, say, obscure technical details to general *nix design philosophies.
However, wiki's for this type of large projects (like wikipedia) need a certain critical mass of contributors for it to, I would think. While I don't know if this project will be "it", I think a wiki aproach would be a great idea. -

Re:Time to change the name
As anyone who follows linux polls would know, KDE generally is preferred over GNOME. The first two things I could come up with googling are:
1. Linux Journal's Annual Reader's Choice Awards. A quote from 2003's edition: With 44% of the votes, KDE is the winner for the sixth consecutive year. GNOME holds on to second place with 23% of the votes.
2. LinuxQuestions.org's Annual Awards, in wihch KDE also regularly beats GNOME (as far as I remember). This one is perhaps slightly more interesting since the site is meant for linux newbies.
As a last thought, there is probably a reason why all of the linux distributions made for the desktop (Lycoris, Xandros, Lindows, etc) use KDE. It has always been (IMHO) the more complete, integrated, and polished desktop -- the fact that it has had a usable file selector for years, and GNOME has just decided to try to fix theirs (although it doesn't seem to be much of an improvement) is just one example of why KDE is more inviting to average users.
On the usability front, here's a dot.kde.org article about a usability survey that found KDE and Windows XP to be comparable for the corporate desktop in terms of usability: http://dot.kde.org/1060717024/. A quote: The usability of Linux as a desktop system has been experienced as nearly equal to Windows XP. A couple of tasks were, in fact, easier and faster to solve on Linux.
