Re:Good managers "jive"?
How about: "Does anyone speak L33T?"

VNs
Best author of all time, hands down. Reading her books is like watching a movie.
So the very best books are like movies? Why not just watch movies then?
If we are going to have a ranking of types of media, I'd put comics way up there. The flexibility of non real time pacing you get in books, as well as the option to choose between imagery and text to use each where it is best. Personally, I see even more flexibility from the visual novel format, which can leverage sound, animation, text and imagery selectively where desired, even optionally interactivity: its just so much more choice for the author (Which of course still has to choose some trade-off between quality and effort, but more options is better). Books, movies and comics are all just subsets of what you can get with a visual novel. There are opensource visual novel tools available, and its perfectly possibly to deploy cross platform, or multi-platform (html5 can do it).
I'm a bit surprised I haven't seen more content presented in the visual novel medium. It seems mainly used for Japanese dating sims. I've seen a few webcomics embracing some of the features, but I'd expect more widespread use of the approach by now. At least you can preorder Steins;Gate, and the megatokyo VN is in the works but I really haven't seen much else of interest (ok, katawa-shoujo was nice (and free), but I mean other genera mostly). Anyone got any other recommendations?

Holy Grail
There is no holy grail way to play games.

Re:Let it die.
You might like to come live in the current world. Like everything else in entertainment (movies, games, comics whatever), music is entertainment and professionally made. It requires time, effort and money
Your argument fails. While feature-length movies are generally the domain of professionals (requires a ton more time), there are entertaining other shorter movies such as Homestar Runner which doesn't even have ads on their site yet has hundreds of videos. Games? There are loads of games that the game itself is free while they use other ways of making a profit. Heck, I can download the WoW client for free ( http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/downloads/wowclient-download.html ) yet I wouldn't say it was unprofitable in the least. Comics? Lets see here, off of the top of my head there are, Megatokyo ( http://www.megatokyo.com/ ), User Friendly ( http://www.userfriendly.org/ ) and XKCD ( http://xkcd.com/ ) And XKCD lets you use their comic so long as you attribute to them.

Re:Yuki Sonoda
OK, this is getting a bit off topic, but Yuki Sonoda is also a character in the Megatokyo web comic.
That's where I've heard this name before!! Thank you for clearing out a portion of my brain.

Yuki Sonoda
OK, this is getting a bit off topic, but Yuki Sonoda is also a character in the Megatokyo web comic. In the comic, she's a 15 year old whose only geek credential is that she collects ancient video game platforms.

Re:Baka = stupid
Ah... the sweet smell of PAC donations. Oh, how I have missed this.
I have been away too long. I can see that the video game industry isn't looking. The money has waned. Those kids must learn anew the meaning of ph33r. I have much work to do.

Re:Ballmer, are you listening?
According to the new rule, 100% of government servers must run Linux by June 30, 2009, and 70% of agencies must use OpenOffice.org,
I guess it's time for Steve Ballmer to catch the next flight to Hanoi with cash and incentives in his briefcase. If this approach worked in the past why shouldn't it work one more time?
Go Ballmer go!

Re:This is getting old.
The check itself may not be easy to fake, but when all you need is the information on the check and you can initiate an ACH? Yeah, it's broken.
I'd link to an example of this kind of thing occurring, but my google-fu is lacking. It was Fred Gallagher of Megatokyo that it happened to though, in one of his rants. -

Re:Mine
I don't use RSS feeds for webcomics, so here is the set of pages I regularly visit:
XKCD We probably all know this one.
Cyanide and Happiness Somewhat twisted humour.
Errant Story Excellent art and storyline.
Bunny Strange humour about bunnies.
QC Indy rock comic of social interaction.
Megatokyo Megatokyo. Has gone downhill in recent years, but still good art.
Penny Arcade Gamer comic, quite famous.
PBF Perry Bible Fellowship hasn't updated in some time, but very funny when he does.
Edible Dirt is a series of single-panel jokes. Very funny, often somewhat twisted.
Ctrl-Alt-Del is a comic about a few gamer roomates.
LFG WoW/MMO/D&D spoof. Quite funny, good art, interesting plot. Many references break the 4th wall.
Two-Lumps is a comic about cats, 1 smart, 1 very, very dumb. I think the artist is stalking my cat to get ideas for the dumb one.
Gunnerkrigg Court Beautiful art, excellent story. And robots.
underpower hasn't updated in some time, great single-page art pieces recently and an actual story before.
Girl Genius is all about Mad Science.
Bunny System is a comic about psychotic rabbits.
Something Positive is very, very cynical. It actually has 5 webcomics on 1 page. Very much worth checking out.
Head Trip is... a head trip.
FLEM hasn't updated in a while, and has a strange and rather violent storyline. Back to single-panel shorts now.
VGCats video game cats is excellent, if you play video games.
Clan of the Cats Author is going blind, will continue if she gets better. Great story and art.
Dr. McNinja The adventures of Dr. McNinja. Clean art, good story, ninjas on fire.
Code Name: Hunter Magic/technology interaction in a world strangely dominated by talking animals. Excellent facial expressions, especially for being animals.
Awkward Zombie gamer comic similar to vgcats.
No Need for Bushido Samurai story, well drawn and reasonably well written.
Giant ITP hosts both The Order of The Stick, a D&D spoof, and The Battle For Gobwin Knob, a comic about a GM who gets sucked into a world of his own design, on the losing side of a no-win scenario.
Last Blood Zombies have taken over the earth and killed nearly all humans, so now the vampires fight to protect their dwindling food source. Excellent drawing and unique story.
Chopping Block Butch the serial killer. Sick, twisted humour, but very funny.
Dominic Deegan Oracle for Hire, is a good story with pretty good art.
The Traveling Gnome Great art, story seems good so far.
One-Liners may be offensive to some, or funny to those with a sense of humour. -
Re:Doesn't work in every major city yet
But does it translate l33t?
-
Re:They're free to share...
What about forms of art and works that are simply not possible to perform live? Do they have no value?
Such as comics ? Girl Genius and Megatokyo both have dead-tree editions available, and apparently sell well enough for stores to give them shelf space, despite being freely available in the Net.
So, if an artist isn't selling, then perhaps, just perhaps, it is not because of the Internet, but because of the art.

Heh, imitated so many times.

Re:What are you going to do???
P.S. exercises like this are important to release to the public as most folks simply do not have any guidance or have given any thought to preparing for such a possibility. What are you going to do when the zombies show up at your door?
:-)

Answer, turn them away at the door for smelling really bad. -
Wireless gaming...
For an xbox, maybe, but there's still a significant disadvantage.
-
Re:Doing it wrong
If you take away all copyright then these people might stop producing work. Is this what you truly want? A society where all writers must take another job with NO possibility of making money?
Since the works of the people you linked to are publicly available, free of charge, from the very sites you linked to, it seems to me that you proved your own argument false, or at least gave strong evidence against it.
More evidence: Girl Genius (my favorite comic, web or otherwise), Megatokyo, Kevin and Kell.

Megatokyo had a strip about this ...
-
"Static can be deadly..."
First thing that popped into my mind was Megatokyo's series of strips in which Largo teaches Erika the dangers of static electricity, and why computers should be assembled while minimally clothed:
Starting here: Megatokyo #653 -
133t n3kk1d sk1llz
I'm afraid you must assemble any 133t box naked. The components are too 133t to be handled while dressed in frilly g1rlz cl0thz. Too much teh >static, too much teh d4m4g3. Must be m@k1ng teh n3kk1d n0wz.

They don't like Metroid Prime in Japan?FTA: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
... is primarily for the overseas markets. I'm a little confused. Am I to understand Metroid is not popular in Japan? I'm afraid I really don't understand what he meant by that... Did Metroid Prime flop in Japan? Do the Japanese not like FPS games or something? Or is their society that misogynist that a butt-kicking cyborg woman is taboo? Now that I think about it, though, most FPS games' credits are full of Americans... Is this sorta like how we never see Japanese dating sims over here, 'cause it's just, well, not something Americans want to play? I dunno. Kinda silly to ask, I guess, but all I know about Japan, I learned from Akira Kurosowa and Fred Gallagher (aka piro). Sorry, but it just boggles my mind that a game as good as Metroid Prime just wouldn't fly in Japan... -
Penny Arcade no, Megatokyo yes
Penny Arcade is for people who don't get Megatokyo.
-
Press-only
Refocusing to benefit the fans and not the press would be a good thing though. Too bad they don't just open E3 to the public, but it looks like what's left over is going to be even more exclusive.

*sigh*, more cordlessness...
Ok, I get it about wireless Internet. Not everywhere has an Ethernet jack in the same place as the power, and ethernet is harder to run, since you have to run it to some relatively centrallized switch. And we can use batteries, so we can literally be completely unwired. And it's nice to be able to automatically connect to the Internet. I really wish we had wireless power -- even decent solar power, a thin panel on the back of the LCD to charge a laptop...
I get it about wireless game controllers. If you're a typical console setup, you have the console hooked up to the TV/Entertainment center, facing a couch. You could buy an extension cord, but no matter how you do it, the cable is going to be in your lap. Wireless just makes sense, and you have to replace the batteries in remote controls also. There's even a Ctrl Alt Del comic about the habits we, as gamers, have built up around the cords, so that when you replace an xbox with a 360, you'll find yourself flicking the thing around like a spaz to get the cord out of the way... but no cord in sight.
Internet can reasonably be encrypted, since you're usually connecting a laptop to it, so you can at least type a password. Game consoles simply aren't worth cracking that way -- too difficult to snoop reliably, and if you piss them off by screwing up their game, they'll just get a wired controller. You can't screw up their game precisely without being in the room, and they'd kind of notice...
I get it about cordless phones. Phones are insecure anyway, and phone connections are as scarce as Internet. I get it about cell phones. Your phone, anywhere, with its contact list (killer feature) built in.
I don't get it about wireless keyboard and mouse. I've used them, but I just don't get it. People say "You can have it in your lap", and I pick up my wired, USB keyboard and place it in my lap. I've gotten used to the mouse cord as a sort of anchoring tension -- this may or may not be total BS, though. They say "I can type from across the room!" I whip out my Powerbook and ssh (or VNC) in over the wifi in less time than it takes you to try to tell me "That's not as convenient!" They say "It's a less cluttered desk" and I show them where their keyboard drawer is. They say "I don't have to worry about where to plug in" and I wonder how anyone could have trouble plugging in USB -- certainly at least as standard as BlueTooth, if not moreso.
Then I flip my keyboard and mouse over, and show them the bottom.
"See anything?"
"No."
Exactly. No contacts for a charger, no holes to plug something in to, no battery meter, no battery compartment to pop out. And if I need to be across the room, I'll plug in my laptop across the room.
There are a few applications -- Quake4 over VLC would suck, but why would I need to be across the room? And it's still vulnerable to this problem. Gamers who get wireless stuff are retarded.
People actually pay extra for this inconvenience?
But even if the thing was free, I work hard to make sure my keystrokes are encrypted when I want them to be. OS X is set to not allow any app to intercept Terminal keystrokes, which are then sent over a Blowfish ssh tunnel authenticated with 4096-bit RSA keys both ways, my email usually goes over a VPN (to cover the wirelessness), my passwords are unguessable, my PGP is unbreakable. And for what? So some script kiddie next door can just grab my keystrokes right out of the air? No thanks!
