Brand Name War.... Taken to the NetWell this war has been fought over before. Remember Adidas and the three stripes?
The only difference now is the Arena. In a time where branding is everything, the value of one's name, and its association with one's web presence is tremendous.
However, the current domain name registration system is haphazard to say the least. On the one hand you get the country specific top level domains, which applies to all the countries except US (Thought the
.US does exist). There's .com and .org to differentiate between commercial and non-commercial organisations, but nobody takes that distinction seriously. .net (not the MS platfrom) is yet another completely different story.I think the first task of the day is to get this anarchical hierarchy into some order. We must get US to use it's TLD, and get rid of
.com, .org, .net etc completely. Then, there should be clear guidelines as to who gets
.com.?? and .net.?? etc. PEople have made these disticntions for tax purpose, why not do it for domain name purposes? Then there should be a new second level domain, such as
.ind.?? for individuals to register their names. It should follow the first name surname pattern. Of course mary.brown.ind.uk is going to be a problem, and a resolution scheme must be found. The first-come first-server free for all messy domain registration system does not bode well for making the internet any less complicated.

Re:14 people in two incidents
Russia sent the first man into space.* Americans didn't.
Russians still send humans into space. Americans don't.
And you really believe that NASA sent people to the moon? Then you might as well believe in Alien Abductions, Santa Clause and the Tooth Fairy
Russians are the true Space pioneers. They boldly went where no American has gone before ;) Give them a chance. NASA should swallow the bitter pill. -
Russians Do It More EconomicallyRussians, having had more budgetry constraints that the Americans, always had to do things more efficiently than the Americans. And, believe it or not, they have a better safety record.
Out of the 14 people who have been killed inflight in Spacecraft, all 14 died in Shuttle accidents.
The shuttle program is expensive. And, with Mars missions also on the horizon, it is high time we considered a replacement for both the Shuttle and the Soyuz. Otherwise, space may just become the final frontier, in more than one way.

Good! Separate Ads and ResultsInstead of including paid listings within search results, which critics say results in misleading search results, MSN said it will display paid listings separately at the top and to the right of search results generated by its search engine.
If this is true, though I don't trust Microsoft, I would try this instead of google, because I am sick of getting paid results mixed with relevant ones on Google.

Distances not to Scale1:15million, this brings the distance between the Sun (positioned in Cheshire at the Jodrell Bank Telescope site) and the Earth to 15km The (average)distance from Sun to Earth is 149 million km.
15 * 15million km = 225 million km != the distance from Sun to earth
How about a scale model ofBritney Spears instead?

Re:On Windows they cost up to $1,295Geeks care more about computers than people.
I would've expected an outcry over the amount of money these visually impaired people have to pay for a screen reader. Instead, they mod me down as a Troll!

Just Because of Linus TorvaldsI think transmeta is loved by geek community just because of Linus Torvalds connection.
Their first chip Crusoe, although saving power, underperformed badly. And the Efficeon doesn't look fast compared to its rivals. The Efficeon TM 8000 can do 1.1GHz consuming 7W. Intel's Pentium M does 1.7GHz for the same power consumption.
I don't think there's anything particularly cool about this news. It is the same as the discovery of the new planet. There are better ones already out there.

Fucking Nanny StateAt my office, they have some automatic censor, that blocks sites containing certain words. So I can't do any net research on the following topics:
- Anal Probes
- Breast Cancer
- Sex Education
- Gay Parade
- Oral Hygene
So I had to get my dose of profanity from the TV. And soon that will be gone to. Reminds me of the Southpark episode, where they say "shit" on television.
If government can block profanity, what will they block next? Are they going to censor all instances where lords name is used in vain?
Jesus man! What's wrong with a little profanity, as long as it is not gratuitous? And fucking and shitting aren't unnatural things you know? A lot of people in the world do it.

Stop Bombarding Us With SpaceshipsIn a statement released to the journalists, the Martian defence secretary Zcumtlweld said that Mars is considering invading the United States to seek and destroy weapons of mass destruction.
"You have polluted your air, poisoned your seas, and turned your landmass into a nuclear waste dump." the statement read. "Leave us in peace, although, I am aware that you don't even know the meaning of the word peace. And stop calling us little green men."

Possible UsesThe members of the NFC Forum envisage that their technology will be used to manage connections to both active and passive devices. People, they say, could use it to establish a link between two handheld devices in order to swap music --
and get raided by MPAA & RIAA.
And then the obligatory question "Yeah, but does it run Linux?
I guess one could also combine it with a trekkie badge
-
Yeah But does itRun Linux?
On a more serious note, the badge, if you stick on your breast pocket, will have one heck of a time picking up your voice, especially in a noisy enviroment. Otherwise you will have to bow your head and pull your shirt up. Looks quite odd.

Remake Madness: A ComparisonI did a very unscientific study comparing the ratings of remakes and originals.
There're only a few cases where the remake was better.

Slashdot SensationalismThis is not reading the mind. It is just about interpreting the nerve signals.
This is not new. Prosthetic hands that operate on nerve signals have been available for decades.
The reason I started reading slashdot was because it was fairly spin free. I guess I am better off reading the AIT Times. It sure has its faults, but it is spin free.

BitTorrent might be in trouble
BitTorrent is based on Kazaa, and the rights to the source code of Kazaa itself will soon be contested in court according BBC news. The Romanian programmer is suing Kazaa for a cool US$25 million, claiming he owns the code. If you remember, Kazaa sued Mr. Toader last year. The court record can be found here.
This surely must be music to the ears of the RIAA. -

Here's compelling evidence that Slashdot's Michael is Evil:
- He scams on computer sales
- He hijacked the website of censorware project
- He allowed a wholly
unscientific article to appear on slashdot

Why I Submitted This NewsI felt that the drilling Sedna story was quite funny, and I wanted more people to read it. I have noticed how utter troll comments get Modded +5 on Slashdot, and I was wondering, if I attached that story to a piece of news - drilling Europa in this case - and addes some psuedo-scientific rant, it JUST might get approved.
and LO and BEHOLD, it did! I tried submitting this to other

Re:Linux in Thailand
The guy up ^there^ who posted this link said it.
My post pre-supposed that it could be taken at face-value. But then...this *is* the interner :o/ -
Canada: Socially AdvancedCanadian society is far more socially advanced than the US. Having visited both countries, I found that in terms of social-democracy, US is definitely third world compared to Canada. Why do I say so?
- Canada has a better health care system.
- Canada has a more accessible education system.
- Canada has higher environmental standards.
- The Canadian Labour laws are far more just, IMHO, than their US counterparts.
- The media are not one dimensial like in the US
The list goes. A lot of my US friends wanted to migrate to Canada, if things in the US got worse. However, it is sad to note how the multinational that have decimated democracy in the US is slowly spreading their tentacles to Canada. I hope Canadians win this battle. Good Luck to them.

Linux in ThailandThe uptake of Linux with Thai computer users is truely mindboggling. I think with the advent of LinuxTLE(Thai Language Edition), more and more computer users are moving away from Windows to Open source.
Quite suprising considering used to be is easy to find illegal software in Thailand.
I think HP is making the right choice by taking advantage of the situation. And with the CEO-Prime Minister Thaksin tipped to win the next election, things will only get harder for pirate software vendors.

Fighting Spam is like Fighting DrugsThe guys who send the spam emails, they are analogous to couriers in the drug trafficking world. Fighting them achieves nothing.
The people you have to fight are the big bosses. In the case of Spam, the IDIOTS who try to sell their products and services through spamming. If more action is taken to prosecute these [deleted expletives], we will be able to combat spam better.

Oh Goody! Now I can install Linux
Once they release the interfaces to these car computers, we can install Linux on them.

US Government: The Best that Money Could BuyThis is part of the vicious circle that makes rich richer and poor poorer.
It maybe that Money != Power
But money can buy you power, awful lot of it. And then it maybe that Power != Money
But power can earn you an awful lot of money. It is as simple as that.It is not only that: the US government is willing to jail a guy for swapping an MP3, and denting the profits of a record company by, say, US$2. But the guy who stole US$7 trillion from his own employees and shareholders goes scott free.
I don't know how one can even consider US government a democracy, when it is definitely not the wish of the people that is being carried out. Money speaks: loud and clear.
The saddest part is, there's really no difference between the Democrats and Republicans when it comes to carrying out the wishes of their big corporate bosses.
And the US is the leader of the free world. And you are not safe even if you are in Australia. Right.... time for me to move to the new planet
