How about name your own price for concerts?
I like this idea, but I think it goes in a direction of a market that is already plummeting to zero code for recorded music (used primarily as a marketing resource to get fans to come to live shows or buy hard merchandise which isn't copied as easily or at a far greater cost).
I love MeetUp.com because I think it is a great way to get to know others in your area who have similar tastes as you do. But MeetUp has a few shortcomings in terms of active financial participation of those who are part of the group, so I think it falls short of being a strong market incentive to use as a direction for bands, public speakers, and others to find markets of interest.
There are websites where people can put up money to entice someone to visit their town, but I think they don't focus well on bands and speakers. Why don't we have more of a market support for live concerts, especially since they can be a "true market" resource for financing musicians and artist? Music has nearly infinite supply in MP3 format, with just the cost of bandwidth and hosting being the limiting factor for infinite supply (therefore zero or near zero market cost). Bands who produce great music at a low or no cost can produce a big profit if they entice people to go to their shows.
Why isn't there, yet, a mechanism for bartering for live music, between fans and artists?
Example:
Radiohead says they'll go on tour in the United States. www.BookABand.com (made up site, might exist) lets all the fans put up their own money to "vote" for a venue for Radiohead to play at (or a city, instead of a specific venue). I may love Radiohead, so I'd say I'll pay $200 per ticket to see them play, preferably in a smaller venue. Note that my wife and I pay outrageous sums of money to see artists play at The Pearl at the Palms Casino in Vegas (small venue, tickets can be $250 per seat for standing room) because we like the closer quarters and the opportunity after the show to talk to the musicians. Not everyone wants to pay that money, but we love small venues, so it is worth it to us.
Others can bid say $1, or $10 or $50 or whatever they feel is a cap. If Radiohead decides to pick that town, let's say Chicago, they can log in and say they'll play Chicago if they can raise $50,000 for the show. Venues can bid based on their capacity and what cut they want. We might have 10,000 Chicago Radiohead fans bidding between $1 and $500, 10 venues bidding between 1000 capacity and 10,000 capacity for a cut of say 10-30%, and Radiohead making the final decision. When they pick a venue, the rest is automatically calculated: fans pay what they think is a viable amount to pay, and the cut off occurs at the point that the band gets their $50,000+ total, with fans below the cut-off not attending. Anyone can raise or lower their bids up to approval by the band and the venue, and the band and venue can cancel their bid as well.
Sort of a Dutch auction of sorts, but with market forces providing the final cost and service provided.
Music sales may not be dead, but they're quickly heading in that direction. For every 1 album sold online, how many are pirated, given away, played on the radio or Pandora, or distributed at no cost or charge? 5? 10? 50? It would make sense for bands to try to make as much profit as possible -- based on their fans' financial desire -- and give more of their music away as a marketing cost.
Some bands, say my brother's band Maps & Atlases, might be happy to play for only $2500 and set up 10 dates for their fans to bid on around the country. They might get 250 people willing to pay $10 each, or 500 people willing to pay between $5 and $20, with venues kicking in a negative cost (meaning they'd pay the band instead of taking a per-ticket percentage) to bid for a semi-popular band such as them. -

Re:All about controlAt the moment the Labels still have control over traditional media. So While you could theoretically make a living via web distribution it still requires people be aware of who you are. Word of mouth can do it but traditional media has the power of hype. Word of mouth is a natural hype. Traditional media brokers in an artificial hype.
Now, you can't even be considered a real musician without a My Space page. It is trendy and almost a necessity, you are almost even forced to put out a few songs for free on the MySpace mp3 player. It is only a matter of time until a band makes it big WITHOUT the industry from MySpace or YouTube.
Myspace is just 1996's Geocity, with a friends list, an even more locked down and restriced page layout, and some embeded media. Now that many more people have broadband, Myspace works. And I say all of that to say. No one saw Myspace comming. I think it is pretty lame. All the tools to make it have been around for more than a decade. But the kids discover it and boom!!! There is money to be made there.
What is the next idea that is to lame for someone over 30 to think of but the kids will fall in love with it? There is one comming that is going to have the critical mass to kick the lables in the balls and make stars out of musicians WITHOUT the old infrastructure.
Just a matter of time.
In the mean time...get off of my lawn.

Lots of people have 'stolen' my music
It would be nice if someone bought some for a change. There's a few videos I've made for various albums, and, to stay on topic, mny remix of "me i'm not" that I wrote using the multi-track sources Trent released for his new album (which I think, personally, is his best work in years).
Of course, no one has really ever stolen my music, since I tend to give it away, following the 'try before you buy' approach that is preached around here. I just think that you can't steal what I give away, but sometimes it's nice to get something back to continue along with all the work that I've done over the years to make my albums, writing and artwork.
Of course, one can alway just make a donation or buy some merchandise if they want to support the cause as well. I've been on this site for years and follow it's practices well...unfortunately it doesn't seem to pay, or not at least yet.
I hear most my work is quite good, maybe you might think so too. -

Bamalance Definition aka How-to Rent a BamalanceI always wondered WTF to call those things!
I can find several sources to support this definition (I was very curious):
From the only bamalance worker I can findI go to nursing school. I'd like to go caving more often but there's that problem with nursing school. I love my dog. I work on a bamalance. I try not to explode.
Dade is most likely Florida, which means this could be a southeastern thing. Also used here, from a man claiming to be 'GA Man' ...And here, from Alabama resident JayDot (who is not doing much for his state's reputation):We used to call it "DFO" on the bamalance. Ask one of them's auntee "What happened to him"
Or, is he from Mississippi? Either way he luvs him sum duck huntin', and apparently is a professional bamalance-riding azz-patcher! From "What Do Ya'll [sic] Do For A Living?":
"Awwwwwwwn know, he just done fell out!"Uh....Jaydot here.....put out a house fire every now then, go to a plane crash once in awhile, and have been known to patch up a busted up azz in the back of a bamalance........
Quickflow, who rides Motocross somewhere in the south, notes:
I currently by Wesley's extra drugs.....
Plus....I'm up 3 cases of beer on DIB bets...
Two Wires...battin' a .1000The Bamalance is there to have extra equipment on hand for the EMT's until a transport unit arrives...most fire department has there own first respond unit. Offer them to come out for $500.00 with a unit. All fire department are looking for some type of fund raises. These trucks have all it takes to keep someone stable.
I could not have written it all better myself. Not exactly authoritative sources, but it must be well-known enough to be used without explanation in several contexts. I have spent over 15 years living in the South (mostly southeast, too) but never noticed it at the time. However, the term is used twice by Nozzlenut on the centralpafire.com forum so maybe the term is primarily spread through Firefighters, with whom I have little experience.

Re:I think I've changed my mind
Most good electronica (though I admit my tastes are somewhat limited to chill, ambient, and psytrance and psy-ambient) is on small independent labels. Have a look at http://myspace.com/sherpajohn for some links to other myspace pages of these sorts of artists and labels, or go to a good 90% of the CD's I bought in the last 3 years are from there, sometimes I find something decent in a local HMV or the little used CD shop I go to now and then. As for the intoxicant of choice for these folks, you will have to ask them, personally I find the music itself intoxicating enough.

Re:IIS Already Leads Where Microsoft CaresThe innovative companies need flexibility, power and tunability, which is given by Apache, and the LAMP stack. The corporations that see the web as a necessity just want to put information onto the Internet. They don't care about "social networks." They just care that their catalog can be viewed. And that is the domain of Microsoft, not Apache. Huh? How is Apache any more flexible, powerful, or tunable than IIS?
Also, last I checked, some pretty big social networking sites use IIS. -
Ask the CIA?
This is normally a taboo area for me as the tirades from the 'see no evil' brigade are normally more then I can stomach and aren't worth the time, however I have to say that from what I've read there's fairly significant circumstantial evidence that would imply they're already here and have been for quite some time. I don't necessarily believe that we're in contact with aliens but at the same time I can't prove otherwise. A theory has to be disproved or discredited before it can be discarded. Some of the people in the following links make some pretty big statements and the 'official' response is normally petty personal and defamatory attack which leads me to be just a little suspicious. Why deride someone when you can prove him wrong with fact? From what I've seen over the last decade regarding the BS media and outright lies from officials and governments I think if I had to I'd side with the ufoligists when it comes to trustworthiness. These are some of the best links I've found... anywayz as they say, The Truth is Out There. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=u

Re:That's not even relevant
Of course, he doesn't use technology so he doesn't really know what's out there on the internet!
Look at Priestbird ( http://myspace.com/priestbird ), Mono ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mono_(Japanese_band) ), Godspeed! You Black Emperor ( http://www.pandora.com/music/artist/a205af6552256a 1b ), Miasma & The Carousel of Headless Horses ( http://www.pandora.com/music/artist/miasma+the+car ousel+of+headless+horses ) .... all highly creative bands that myself (a fan) would have never found or listened to without the internet. Godspeed! I first heard in 28 Days Later - but never would have found out who they were if not for the internet. All the others I've found via Pandora - and bought albums of from iTunes - and have even seen one live, since (Priestbird, formerly Tarantula AD).
Without the internet, these artists could never have expanded their fanbase to a varied population.... it's just not the type of stuff that gets played on the radio at all! (I mean, really - go listen to The Peacock & The Heretic by Miasma et. al. and tell me which station would play that..? )
Two other miscellaneous points: the blogger used "irregardless" - argh! .... also, is it just me, or is it strikingly ironic that a blogger is writing about Elton John ragging on bloggers -- and (mostly) agreeing with him? -
