Re:Scalpel or gun can be used for good or bad ...
Its not the scalpel or the gun that is the problem, it is the mind and the intentions behind the hand holding the scalpel or gun.
Medical companies refuse to export drugs to the United States that they know are used in executions. But nobody will stop selling arms to someone else unless and until international law gets involved, and sometimes not even then. It seems pretty clear that those in the field of medicine have a higher moral standard.
You are mistaken. The law restricts both fields.
"Drugmaker Fresenius Kabi said shipments of the anesthetic propofol were halted to a Louisiana distributor for 4 1/2 months through mid-March because the company feared the European Union would ban export of the drug altogether if it was used in executions ... The death penalty is banned in the European Union, and the 27-country bloc, of which Germany is a part, bans the export of drugs for use in executions."

Re:You are barking at the wrong tree
But don't forget about: Point 8)
Learn
How
To
Insert
White
Space
In
Your
Documents.
If all you do is write long run-on sentences, then point 9) you look like an idiot and more to the point, Point 10) no one is going to bother reading them no matter how interesting and insightful it is. You could write things all day long and even though it might be spelled rite and ain't got no many atrocious grammar missteaks, as long as no one reads it then all you've done is waste both your time and theirs. Also, you've increased global warming by breathing and expending energy while you wrote your War and Peace masterpiece and it didn't make any difference in the long run. So in other words: white space on the page is just like air in your lungs, if you don't have any white space in any or your paragraphs you should just stop breathing while you write it so that you remember not to do that. Blank space also creates a slight sense of restfulness for the eyes since you don't have a giant wall of black text staring at you that you have to parse. Instead of having a massive square of text, you might try a more artistic approach for your choo-choo (See marshall). If you just don't care though, you can write as much as you want, even try to write the Great American Novel. All you're doing though is taking low-paying jobs from a million monkeys, and now-a-days putting them on the unemployment line since they're people too. I suppose that's better than being served up as Soylent Green, though. And yes I know that in slashdot you can make things look as pretty as you want in the Comment section, but if you don't delimit them and add the internal markup, then you end up with stuff that looks a lot like this, I'm the only one still here, aren't I? Gee, this is just like back in grammar school when I was the last one picked for dodge-ball, as I couldn't dodge very well. That mean old Tommy always kept picking on me and throwing the ball as hard as he could; he even broke my arm one time and then stood over me and laughed and laughed. I hated him, I've hated him for years. He was always better than I was in almost everything, but just exactly like you he didn't bother to use white space and paragraphs while writing and ... TOMMY? TOMMY, IS THAT YOU?!!? I'm going to find out where you live and we'll just see how you like to be hit with a wrecking ball instead of a hard rubber ball.
So use white space or a wrecking ball might soon come your way. Oh, and those are all good points by the way, once you find them. -
Looks like it wasn't speeding after all
I suppose even a minor wreck can be fatal if the gas tank is ruptured.
-
Re:No question?
"...there is no suggestion anyone was to blame for Walker's crash..." unless you follow that link which says that the police suspect that speed was involved. No question that anyone not in the car was to blame is a different sentence indeed. Looking at the pictures of the scene its hard to imagine that they were driving anywhere close to the 45mph speed limit.
And later they estimate the car was going 40-45mph. http://www.nbcnews.com/entertainment/paul-walker-was-real-hero-daughter-heart-soul-his-charity-2D11683842
How about waiting until the investigation is complete before jumping to conclusions? The police comment on random shit just to comment in cases like these. For some reason nobody considers "I have no idea, we're still investigating" an appropriate answer. -

"Previous reports of Comet ISON's death may have been somewhat exaggerated, but this time it looks like the real thing [death].
Remnants of the object once touted as the "comet of the century" passed through the viewing field of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory in the wake of Thursday's close encounter with the sun -- and as it passed, the bright spot that survived grew dimmer and dimmer.

Re:Deep Learning
Andrew Ng didn't use random forests but a neural network to actually "learn" discriminative features *UNSUPERVISED*.
This is done by creating a Neural Network that basically projects it's input on it's output (it's like an identity function).
Lets say you have 100 input parameters, and 100 output parameters. What you want the neural network to do is compress these 100 to (for example) 10 nodes, then go back to the initial 100. In the process, this neural network will actually learn an identity function, where it will learn the important discriminative features in those 10 nodes.
This is somewhat different from how you usually use a neural network, starting with input parameters, go through a couple of hidden layers and end up with just a couple of output results.
Andrew Ng's google experiment did exactly that! It was not fed cat images. It was fed random images and through deep learning actually learned the concept of cats *UNSUPERVISED*.

Re:Should we all talk? The article from NBC mentions that there will be some cooperation.
The teams for Maven and Mangalyaan plan to collaborate in their studies of the Red Planet's atmosphere. For instance, there's been some evidence that methane is being released into the Martian atmosphere, which could hint at biological activity. Curiosity hasn't detected any methane at the surface, and Maven won't be measuring methane because that doesn't mesh with the mission's scientific goals. But Mangalyaan can take a closer look at the methane question, and its results could add to Maven's models.

Nope. K-Mart owns Sears. The combined company is called "Sears Holdings" simply because K-Mart thought the historic Sears brand was more valuable. Sears went under and is now a K-Mart division.

Re:Government Involvement
In that sense health insurance is far more important than auto insurance.
No, it's not. If I am perfectly healthy (which I am) and able to pay my medical bills from my own savings, why should I have to have the added financial burden of paying for YOUR medical bills? That is what medical insurance is about after all, and something this administration has repeatedly said in the form of, "We need as many healthy people as possible to sign up so they can pay for the sick."
Health insurance is a cost which is never recovered. Ever. It's actually worse than car insurance because the insurance companies are betting you will stay healthy while you are betting you will get sick or injured.
That's not reasoning; that's manipulation.
No, it is reasoning by illustrating one of many reasons the colonists broke away from England. They were tired of BEING manipulated by government. They were tired of having to send the product of their labors back to England and then being told they had to buy finished products, made from their labors, only from England. They were tired of having their taxes go to expand the British Empire, tired of being used as pawns against the French, and so on. Their lives, to use your example, existed solely for the benefit of someone else. What they wanted did not matter. Thus, revolution and independence.
The rest of the world sees through these political and corporate planted "opinions" as nothing more than a way to protect profits.
Corporate planted? How is arguing AGAINST giving my money to a company a corporate planted opinion? I'm arguing against giving companies free money. If anything, I should be heralded by the Slashdot crowd for fighting against corporate governance and greed. The only one who is protecting profits is the Obama administration who gave insurance companies this windfall.
Your government tells you what to do and buy all the time you twit
Really? Explain how that works. Do they tell me I must buy my cable service from a specific company? Phone/cell service? Broadband (local government yes, but not Federal)? How about what food I must buy? The car I drive? Name one item the government tells me I must buy. Remember, this is on the Federal level we're talking about.
You don't oppose health care for "freedom" and you know it. You oppose it because you are told to.
No, I oppose being told I have to pay for your health insurance while you can continue to smoke, be obese, be an alcoholic or do drugs without having to change your ways. I oppose being told I must give up the fruit of my labors to people who won't take personal responsibility for their lives (going back to your original comment). I oppose having the government reach into my bank account and forcibly extracting my money and handing it over to a private company because I didn't "voluntarily" hand over the money to the company.
Health care and unhealthy American food are pretty much as far apart as things can get.
No, they're not. Americans eating junk food has a very high correlation to bad health. Witness the most recent result which shows why medical costs are so high in the U.S.: The reason what you think. Diabetes and heart disease come from two main issues: regularly eating food which is bad for you and not having an active lifestyle.
But if you would care to explain how keeping society healthy and productive, doing it cheaper than the American system and reducing crime is not a good thing
Considering UACA doesn't keep costs down or make people productive, it's a moot point. Nowhere in the bill are costs contained. The only thing this bill does is force people like me to pay for those who can't, or won't, take care of themselves. That is all. There will be no cost redu -

That shooters have specifically targeted areas with limited access to firearms to maximize the amount of damage they can do before being stopped?

http://edition.cnn.com/US/9510/sniper/am/You are joking right? You're not just being ignorant or stupid?
The only time military personnel are allowed to posses firearms while on a base is for training purposes (even then may or may not have ammo), MPs/guards while ON DUTY (they must surrender their weapon and ammo to the armory when going off duty), married personnel (after filing required paperwork and getting permission) living on base within their own home, or checking the (even privately owned) weapon in or out of the armory to bring it on or off base. In other words, military bases inside the US are *effectively* gun free zones and have been for about 20 years thanks to Bush 41. When Alexis went on his spree, there may have been a total of 13 people on the entire base of 13,000 carrying a firearm (including Alexis). Probably about the same odds James Holmes had doing the same crap in a theater and encountering an off duty police officer that ignored the "No Guns" sign. That didn't happen, just talking about the odds... Basically chance in hell of encountering significant opposition. The odds in many places are in the favor of the psychopath. They only have to be rational for about 5 minutes to realize that, and it's time that is universally understood.

Re:Slink in iMac and iPads
Failing to use common sense. PC sales are slipping badly.
Worldwide shipments of personal computers fell in the third quarter of the year, the sixth straight quarter of decline as cheaper tablet computers and smartphones cut into demand, according to market research firms IDC and Gartner. . . The top 3 PC sellers — Lenovo, HP and Dell — all grew shipments between zero and 3 percent during the quarter . . . Acer and Asus suffered steep declines.
It just shows you most people don't know.
It shows you people like you will twist facts whichever way they want. According to your own link, Apple is the #1 tablet maker by far and tablet sales have slowed for everyone. Yes Apple has dropped market share. For a long time they were the only ones making a compelling tablet that people wanted to buy. Now others are catching up. What isn't in your IDC numbers is how much profit Apple makes on their tablets. If it's anything like smartphones, they probably make more than their 30%.

Re:Why can't we make it here?
I found an informative article. Summary: It says that essentially the US firm Hospira is unable to proceed due to the FDA not authorizing changes in the manufacturing process. Teva, an Israeli company, exited the business after what sounds like a combination of manufacturing issues and a large number of spurious lawsuits over a hepatitis C outbreak. The drug itself is extremely hard to manufacture, and profits are nearly non-existent so there's little incentive for competitors to enter the market.
Possibly the issue would be resolved if the FDA were to change the regulations, but again, no information on what exactly the problem is were reported.

Re:Anything police can use should be restricted
It's illegal to fly an RC model for any kind of pay.
That's what *I* thought, too. So why don't we take a page direct from the politicians: I fly for myself and take pics, and then give them to you because you ask. (Presumably I'd need to give them to all comers, but then again not Every Single Person I meet is my friend. So I don't see that saying "No" is that bad. A judge may disagree.)
You, then, contribute to my fund (charitable, PAC, LLC, something) that I just happen to control. No no -- it's not MY money at all, it's the funds' money; I just happen to be the one in control of it. Or my friend is, whatever.
Now, could the feds come in and take control and arrest me before, during, or after the fact? Yep, because the men with guns always win, especially if they have enough bullets.
By the way, I think that's great: "I use it to troll 'real world' groups... Completely legal as I'm doing it for fun." But mightn't fun have consequences? Just because you're having fun doesn't mean everyone else is. Aren't you responsible if you hurt someone else? And if there's not some kind of ID (owner sticker, serial number, etc) on it, how are they to know who owns it? Do you walk up and say "Sorry about that" and claim ownership and responsibility? Or do you just write it off as perhaps a bad battery and disappear?
Fun is by yourself or with friends, and perhaps with a few strangers accidentally nearby. Fun does not consist of ONLY strangers. Then again I'm an old fogie, so get off my lawn. And by the way: I'm practicing. -

You'll now treat that child differently because you view them differently. This whole 23andme bullshit is another way to separate you from your money for not a lot of benefit. Now ancestry.com is using it so you can find your genetic roots as well. You may as well go to the Mall and get your Biorhythm chart built out for you because you're born with a set of genes and unless there are cures for all these things that are genetically linked, knowing that you'll die at a certain time or have a certain disease has more meaning later on in life and will create unnecessary worry and burden on you and your loved ones. I was a federal employee for 3 years, but I left 6 months ago for the private sector because the benefits, pay, and stability of a federal job were terrible. I'll say that again, the benefits, pay, and stability of a federal job is significantly worse than in the private sector.
Strawman much? First, that is a complete load of bullshit because I worked in DOD for probably longer than you have had a career. I was also Military, so save your fallacy. More importantly, it does not change anything I stated or that you lied about.

Journalists dole out cash to politicians (quietly)
Msnbc.com identified 143 journalists who made political contributions from 2004 through the start of the 2008 campaign, according to the public records of the Federal Election Commission. Most of the newsroom checkbooks leaned to the left: 125 journalists gave to Democrats and liberal causes. Only 16 gave to Republicans. Two gave to both parties.
Do journalists' political donations (mostly Democratic) = news bias?

Re:Good.
There are indeed such risks. Particularly in the US, doctors sometimes suggest or encourage unnecessary c-sections because they think they're safer (and less likely to result in lawsuits), opening the door to a number of complications; people (either doctors or mothers) choose to induce labour chemically to fit a schedule, leading to fatal exhaustion from prolonged labour; and there's some evidence that lying down while giving birth is less healthy than standing up, simply because of how the human body is built, which comes with yet another raft of potential issues. Here is a discussion of the first one. Not sure I agree with this study, but hey, these things happen. It's fairly easy to research.

Thankfully, the days when our admin people wanted a fax on headed notepaper before they believed a business was legitimate are long gone. Occupy organizers linked to Cleveland bridge bombing plot
Fellow activists express disbelief at arrest of NATO summit bomb plot suspects
I think there are one or two more, at least, associated with Occupy. -
Re:Absolutely disgusting
I've yet to see a regular military that has it's soldiers use crank in battle.
How about the United States Air Force?
BTW, "it's" is a contraction of "it is."

Re:I don't know if Obama planned it this way...
If Congress authorizes back pay for federal workers that did not work. Do you think this Congress is going to do that? It isn't even being discussed in Washington, from what I have heard.
After 2s on Google: listen again: House unanimously approves back pay for 800,000 furloughed federal workers. Sure it hasn't passed the Senate and been signed by the President, but the issue is being discussed.

The Superhuman Future? Khan?
I imagine most readers are worried about super-strength people, but on a more practical basis, this could be used to prevent genetic predisposition to disease, like breast cancer gene carriers being able to ensure their child won't be carriers of the gene, or even the mentally ill from passing on genes related to say, schizophrenia.

Re:This law is to prtect Republicans.
In the 2012 Presidential election, California had more people vote for Mitt Romney (4,202,127) than every other state except Texas (4,555,799). There are a lot of Republicans in California, especially through the Central Valley. It's just that there are a lot more Democrats.

Not new
This is not a "new threat"; this is extremely common. A quick google comes up with at least 5 similar incidents in 2011 and 2012.
