Run a local DDoS to the idiots
There's this really kewl little script out there... I can't remember the name of it, but basically you enter the IP of a system on your local LAN and the system completely and totally freezes up. Turn it off and the system operates like it just froze... no data loss, nothing. So, I suggest a simple Linux box running NTOP. Find the highest traffic users during the outbreak, and DDoS 'em. Even rebooting won't help them.
:) Of course, there's many tools out there that incorporate NTOP, Nessus, NMAP, etc to find which systems are vulnerable and all that, but without local access to the systems themselves to turn them off or patch them, you should just DDoS until the outbreak goes away and those offending systems can be fixed.

Thank you Symantec
So thanks to today's news that Symantec programs may execute programs that should be flagged, one must now only use a solid product like Symantec Anti-Virus to load up software to remove Microsoft's anti-spyware software. Beautiful. Perhaps I should save everyone the time and hassle and just make a website with a malformed jpg or gif that loads an ActiveX script to then download the trojan and thus get it all done in one shot. Vulnerability after vulnerability after vulnerability. Perhaps this guy wasn't so far off.
Of course, I can't help but point out the obvious: rumors keep abounding that M$ will charge for its anti-spyware and anti-virus softwares. So let me see if I'm clear on this... they write shitty code that I'm forced to use (since the apps I need only run on Win32), and then I have to pay again for software to keep people from exploiting the software that was shitty to begin with. Isn't that a bit like selling you a piece of shit car, then charging you to use your warranty when the clutch fails on day #2 of ownership? You know, many of us thought that the day would come that M$ would charge for access to WindowsUpdate. Is there anything they won't charge for? Don't they ever say "we fucked up... here's a freebie on us"? Or "you already paid $300 for our OS... here's a way to secure it for free". -
Won't affect me...
Thank gawd I just installed XP SP2. I get the BSOD every five minutes now, but at least I know I'm protected from the latest viruses and spam.
I am protected, right? I mean... all the hype about SP2 means I won't get anymore popups, spam, or viruses, right?

An Objective Review of Bullshit 1.2.1
Hi. We're SCO. We don't believe in the GPL, but we include a host of GPL'd applications in our version of UNIX that no one other than those already using it (and those are just trying to move away from it) want.
How to get fired: recommend software from a vendor who's source is closed and may not be around in the near future. No... I don't mean Microsoft. I mean SCO.

Don't buy a Dell :)
In NY you will readily find hundreds of retail outlets that carry brands such as IBM, Sony, Compaq|HP, etc. You will also find Gateway Country stores that sell Gateways. Dell has a few, select retail outlets, but I'm not sure of any in NY. There's also Apple and the Apple stores, of which there are at least 6 in NY.
If you're really sold on Dell, the order it and have it drop shipped to the FedEx or UPS depot nearest your hotel. Then drive over there and show ID to pick it up.

Funny, but it seems that really don't need bad reviews, freezes, or crashes to end the life of your software project. All you need it a sucky license.
As I understand it, Xfree changed their license to make sure more credit is given to its developers. But who gives a crap when no one will use because of the license itself.

Re:Power to the pornsters...
Also worth pointing out... the porn industry's innovation is self serving. ie: if some porn guys get together to work on content delivery, they do so because it will directly affect sales of their product. They already know people want porn. There's no need for marketing. The demand exists. So they simply work on technologies, protocols, and implementation of existing tools to meet the demand. Commercial interests vary a bit in this regard. Take M$, for example. They always develop new stuff (yeah, I know... and they also borrow ideas). But once its created and appears to then be working, they still have to market it. They have to tell people its out there so people will know to buy it and use it. With porn, this isn't the case. People go looking for porn... it doesn't come looking for them. And when they see its available in a simple format, they get it. Also worth noting, most porn viewers won't complain when they're streaming video fails. They might cancel their $20/month subscription, but most are too embarrassed to admit viewing it, so they just don't complain. As such, when porn content delivery fails for the average user, we don't hear about it.
Little trivia note: ever see the movie Anti-Trust? If you get beyond the drama and look at the goal of the software company goals, it was about content delivery. I know from personal experience that the writers of the movie spent about 2 months talking to porn industry people before writing this portion of the script. They did so because they knew that porn companies were using technology that the mainstream wasn't and therefore could offer it as *new ideas* in the movie, but not ideas that were too far fetched to believe. In fact, everyone at my studio got a free advance screening.

Power to the pornsters...
Still wondering why I can stream Debbie Does Dallas (the original) to my Zaurus over 802.11b faster than to my PC with a 1GB ethernet adaptor.
Something the article fails to mention is the money behind porn. The porn industry is the *only* industry that has never suffered financially. There have never been layoffs. And while mostly privately held (after all, who wants their investment portfolio filled with smut companies), its one of the best funded industries out there. The porn industry has the $$$ to make things work, but they don't always share their technologies. The majority also use some form of *nix in their infrastructure... very little M$ found in the porn industry. And from a dot-bomb perspective, I made a killing as a 21-year-old making over $150K a year in the dot-com era. When I finally got laid off, I went to Vivid Video. While all my other over $100K a year friends and co-workers are now averaging $80K to $90K, I'm now making over $200K. There's something to be said for working in an industry with money. And, no, I'm not an actor, but I do get to watch whatever I want... and occasionally some of the girls need a little relief. :)

And what about us small-timers?
As the article points out, its 45K to apply and well over 1 million to complete the process and get everything setup. But what about the individual and openness? I for one would like my own personal andrew.mobile... or maybe even andrew.myisp.mobile. After all, I have number portability now. Why not also have domain portability in regards to my wireless equipment? Wouldn't it be nice to switch providers... whether of my 3G network or my 802.11b, but keep my andrew.myisp.mobile and my phone number?
Also... not sure how many others were bothered by the presence of M$ on the committee. Don't they have enough of their toes in enough industries? Now they want to be part of the control of the TLD for the mobile space??? Add up the net-worth of all the companies involved and M$ has the most $$$ which means they have the most strongarm potential. This isn't meant as a flame war, but rather a call for each of us to submit our opinions to ICANN about the presence of M$ (who isn't really a telco-type company... but just a software company) on the committee. If M$ is going to be onboard (as a s/w company), so should Trolltech and Palm and some of the other more *open* vendors who's software are also used in mobile devices. Otherwise, all I see is yet another entity that M$ can bully its way around, not to mention the fear of the .mobile root server possibly running on Windows???

M$ Innovation???
Taken as a whole... I haven't used much of M$'s *enhancements* since Win98. I still just use a web browser (Mozilla), an office suite (Open Office), and a few other tools. I don't use Windows Media Player. I don't use MSN Messenger (I prefer Trillian). And I don't use most of their additional options, though I do use Visio and Project, but those are part of the core OS. Taken as a whole, I've upgraded each time... from 95 to 98 to 98se to win2k to XP, but I still use it for the same shit. I browse the web... check email... etc. But at least they get faster with each release. Or do they? My hardware definitely gets faster as I get upgrades and new systems. So if I've upgraded each time but still use the it for the same old shit, perhaps I'm due a refund?

Only $45???
Not sure about the math, but last I checked, Windows cost a lot more than $45.00. Then again, if it only cost $45... as in I could go to the computer store and buy it for $45.00... then perhaps it would be worth it. Then I could take the money I normally have to spend on Windows and use it to buy VMWare instead (vs finding keys for it on astalavista.com) and then I could still have my Linux system with my Windows via VMware config all for a more *reasonable* price.
This post is a sarcastic attempt at irony and humor and not meant to be an admission of guilt for software piracy that would lead to the BSA knocking on my door.

Re:snafu
Darl would be stupid to step down now. SCO is still cash flow positive thanks to M$. Then again, Enron was cash flow positive until that one fateful day when it all came crashing down...
I for one hope that counter-suits after the fact can be directed at Darl himself, and not just SCO. Considering he'll never get a job again, at least a few class action suits, plus a few from AutoZone, Daimler Chrysler, and IBM for libel could dip into Darl's retirement monies.

I can only hope that Mr. Rollins has the balls to step up and start supporting Linux. Defacing Money is a Federal Offense
Looking beyond the fact that they flushed $1000.00, but they were stupid enough to publish their results on the web. So much for the listing on urbanlegends.com. Unfortunately, what they may have failed to realize is that the Federal Reserve Note is not technically theirs. Yes, the value of it is. And in the old days, they could've traded it for an equal amount of gold or silver. But all paper currency in the U.S. is technically the property of the U.S. government. This is why it is illegal to deface paper currency. And these guys were bright enough to do so *and* publish the results. One must wonder if they're going to be fined.

The Linux Bandwagon
Hmmm... ironic that companies like Novell that were on the brink of being nothing adopted Linux as their new strategy to get cash flow positive. And Sun, who many thought were on the way out, are being forced to swallow Linux more and more. Its no secret that Corel jumped into Linux quite some time ago, but perhaps the market is a bit better for them now. Many companies are still shy of StarOffice simply because Sun has been so Linux wishy-washy the last few years. And while OpenOffice is good, it has neither the history of Corel Office, nor the compatibility (at least looking back... Corel Office was much more compatible with Office 2000 than OpenOffice ever was). Perhaps the time is right for Corel Office to once again be what Word Perfect was before MS came to town. And with a cross-platform base, perhaps they can topple some of the MS dominance.
Now if only someone (Corel, OO, Sun, etc) would put together something like Ximian's Evolution, but have it co-exist with an office suite, maybe we'd have a good, robust, cross-platform office suite worth switching too.

Probable Cause?
I wasn't aware that "parking off the road" was probable cause to "investigate an investigation". Surely this is a free country and so long as he wasn't trespassing, parking on the side of the road isn't a crime? I see truck drivers do it all the time. Are they required to show ID? Not to mention, its not just the $250 fine or the invasion of privacy that's at issue. There's also the impound fees, the potential bail/bond fees and lost interest on funds that could be sitting in a bank account, not to mention possible lost time at work, etc. This is what is known as a cop having nothing better to do with his time.
I had a similar issue arise recently in which I was stopped while driving to a shooting range and suspected of possibly having a stolen vehicle. I was searched and the gun I was taking to the range was found and confiscated (I live in California where just owning a gun is typically considered a crime). Thankfully, I showed proof of legal ownership of my truck *before* the search which removed the probably cause (not that transporting a gun was a crime anyway). The judge realized this and dismissed the case. But again, its an example of cop on a power trip. Once you refuse to cooperate, they act like the judges themselves instead of just the peace officers they're supposed to be.

Keeping things in perspective...
Taking out the contractual agreements, etc. the lineage of the UNIX code goes something like this:
AT&T made UNIX and sold it to Novell.
Novell owned UNIX and sold it to SCO.
SCO thought it owned UNIX and licensed it to everyone.
But if we weren't talking about UNIX source code. What if we were talking about a cheap hooker? What if it went something like this:
Brian Roberts (CEO AT&T) nailed Martha.
Brian sold Martha to Jack Messman (CEO Novell).
Jack nailed Martha and sold her to Darl McBride.
Darl nailed Martha, then pimped her out to everyone, then sued them all when Martha got syphilis and HIV.
Life is always a matter of perspective. If we were talking about a whore instead of UNIX code, do you really thing we'd all care?
