Re:Apple's new CEO still needs to prove himself
And after 2 years, he still hasn't. We keep hearing hype, but where's the proof? Apple should be in front of the next revolution (dismembering STBs and their fees) but no, that looks to be Roku because Apple's longstanding effort (Apple TV) is and continues to be half-hearted. This guy seems to be by the numbers type of guy, an accountant, and no Jobs. Jobs was an asshole, but he was an asshole that got things done. We already seen Apple without a ruthless asshole in the past and it's not pretty.
So don't tell me what Apple knows better, what is it doing better? Microsoft has the entrenchment of apps to rely on, Apple not so much.
He hasn't. It has been 2 years now and the only thing he has done was get rid of graphics to aplease the anti-skuemorphism crowd with a METRO clone of flat, colorless, no shininess, tile like icons for IOS 7 with cheap plastic phones knockoffs of their original.

Re:Because it's better
While I generally agree with you on windows vs linux for desktop use about the strong advantage of the halo effect - i.e. the software that runs on it and 3rd parties that support their stuff on it, rather than a straight comparison of the OS - I find it hilarious that you used VISTA as the point to demonstrate it. The driver model changed completely, so so many vendors were hugely delayed bringing out vista drivers, and a lot took the opportunity to obsolete hardware that was only a year or two old. The scanner and printer makers in particular had a field day in 'gotta buy a new one' because of vista.
Also 'Strange IE-only sites not being a issue' is an issue I haven't seen in years now, I think they largely remain in Korean banking and some corporate intranets, but in the EU/western europe, it's transformed into 'webkit-only tested' websites. Long as it looks good on the ipad, who cares about the rest, seems to be the thinking sometimes.
Finally while security essentials doesn't entirely suck from a nagware side of things, it does suck pretty hard as an actual anti-virus
I run windows where I must (gaming, vmware console, active directory management) now and switched to OSX on the desktop and linux on the server as a direct result of metro. It really does suck as a desktop OS without hacking in a start menu replacement (simple example - no folders in metro, so you're forever scrolling if you don't want to have keep going to all apps all the time which is a bugger to get to quickly) and I really can't be bothered any more.
Microsoft have clearly bet the farm on touch-based tablets, they're desperately afraid of the ipad. And just like google betting the farm on social networking with google+, they kinda suck at it as it's not what they grew wealthy doing. They're both juggernauts with a lot of inertia behind them, but then, so was Big Blue.

Re:Ballmer is a Great CEO
Yeah there's been some failures as well as successes.
The thing is for Windows and Office, Ballmer doesn't really need to do much to still earning profits as those two are monopolies. Even then there was the Vista and Win 8 debacles. Beyond Windows and Office, Ballmer hasn't done much.
Citation needed.
A simple google search is all it takes but if you can't do that: This article lays it out.

Microsoft added just Google Talk support!
Earlier this week, Microsoft announced it was adding Google Talk support to its Outlook.com email service. That addition did not sit well with Google's CEO Larry Page. During a Q&A session with people who attended the Google I/O keynote today, Page expressed his feelings on Microsoft's move in the context of promoting open standards for software.
When asked by a keynote attendee from Mozilla about the future of web technology, Page said Google has invested a lot of time supporting open standards and said he was "personally quite sad" about how the industry has dealt with those standards. He then brought up the fact that Microsoft added Google Talk support for Outlook.com, stating that Microsoft was "... inter-operating with us but not doing the reverse, which is really sad. That not the way to make progress. You need to actually have inter-operation, not just people milking off one company for their own benefit." He also described Microsoft's activities as "milking off" of Google's innovations.

In December 2010, the South Korean firm DoDAAM unveiled the Super aEgis II,[2] an automated turret-based weapon platform that uses thermal imaging to lock onto human-sized targets up to 3 km away. It is able to function during nighttime and regardless of weather conditions.[3]

Compatible with Windows 7?
If not then I am not interested.
Rumor has it the new Atoms with Clovertail are not Windows 7 compatible. As Microsoft wants us to be testers first rather than customers so they can sell more phones as we get used to the UI.

You forgot Zune, Kin, and Xbox. Yeah xbox is still a money loser in spite of all the paid hype. It has lost $3 billiion in 10 years and is kept alive only by money from the Windows (OEM) monopoly and the Office (file format) monopoly. It has by far the most hype, so that may be why perception flies in the face of reality.

Re:nope
That's what people said about the Galaxy Note. Somehow though last August they hit 10 million sales after less than a year. Many billions of dollars in revenue will help soothe the pain of being made fun of.
Actually when Android first came out phone makers didn't want to make a high-end "candybar" phone because it would be ridiculously expensive, so Google paid to have one made and the demand proved itself enough that phone makers came onboard and Google could retire their own-brand phone. Now Android is the number one smartphone OS, nearly 3x ahead of its nearest competitor and by itself over two thirds of global unit sales. This is probably that evolution again.
OEMs ought to buy a hint one day and when Google says "we're thinking of making an X..." leap into that briar patch. God knows OEMs have made enough failed Wintel and Windows Phone products to hit their career fail quota, and on the winners they make bupkiss, nada, zilch. Google doesn't want to own-brand their products and they're not great at it, but if OEMs will stand in the the way of progress Google needs must march around them and move on. Waiting and begging for people to let go of their Windows obsession was for the old way when Google was not a more influential, successful and bigger company than Microsoft is. Google are becoming less patient with impediments to their vision of the future. Once it was "we think this might be neat." Now it's "help or get out of the way."
Driving Google to get good at product manufacturing, sales and delivery is not a good incumbent device OEM survival strategy. If OEMs make them do that, Google will be as good at it as everything else they set their minds to. I.E. Google will eat the entire client device OEM ecosystem if they must to drive progress. They'd rather not - the progress is what they want and if the OEMs will deliver it they can put their effort in other places. But if they must, they will.

You failed vs. my DNS inefficiency points... apk
You don't disprove or dispute them -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=3417867&cid=42736287 fully or even EFFECTIVELY (this may not be YOUR fault due to less know-how, since guys like me DO build what you merely 'use', user)... but then again: YOU limited yourself, not I!
PLUS:
Do the math on 2++ million records in a hosts with my fav sites I only keep 20 favorites in a custom hosts file cached in RAM for speed with those favs @ the top, beating DNS indexing or even btree seeks too... do the math!
(Plus the VERY thing that cures this is hardcoding in hosts files, as to the issue in this article, by BYPASSING THE NEED TO CALL OUT TO THESE UNPATCHED MAJORITY OF VULNERABLE DNS SERVERS OUT THERE! Period!)
Plus, again a fact per that math I outlined:
I resolve FASTER locally from disk than remote DNS servers do, especially if NXDOMAIN happens!
(Especially how I load it from a TRUE SSD based on DDR2 ram, the gigabyte IRAM by redirecting my hosts file sort of like how *NIX etc shadow passwords work in fact), once loaded thus (faster, zero seek access almost) & cached into RAM (1 of 2 ways I noted, 1 of which I use to overcome the limited faulty DNS clientside cache service in Windows with no less)).
I merely state facts that mathematics prove & yes, again, computers DO use that type of math in code and hardware too...
Yes, and? Yes:
Due to my 'tricks' as you called them?
Yes, know-how you clearly do NOT possess as a 'techie' or even "mighty admin" type Lol...

Not IE only
Chrome also supports the standard and can already interface with IE 10. WebRTC is not standardized as no one can agree on the exact implementation yet and no 2 browsers can work with it the same. Microsoft did submit this to the W3C with its implementation.
Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can care to comment?
Due to Microsofts past with IE 6 and also them buying Skype I do feel a little skeptical. Is WebRTC really that difficult compred to the other one?

Re:Non Sequitir
Sorry about that, the site where I read it has taken it down but you might be able to find it under just "Windows Blue" or Windows 9. the closest I was able to find to the original memo is this article that talks about the yearly update schedule but it doesn't have the memo. Frankly it doesn't surprise me as i figured that being a MSFT internal memo they would DMCA and C&D anybody that printed the thing as it was obviously a leaked internal document. if I'd have realized it was gonna be taken down i would have saved a copy and put it in a dropbox or something, I just figured "nothing is ever erased from the web" but I guess this memo wasn't newsworthy enough, my bad. I'll keep looking and if I find the full text again i'll be sure to save the page as a PDF and put it in a nice anon dropbox somewhere.
But I can tell you reading it has me looking at exit strategies and I've been selling and servicing MSFT products since Win 3.x, yes the plan is THAT dumb. it talked about how MSFT was gonna go full tilt into hardware, MSFT laptops and desktops and tablets and phones, that windows was gonna switch to a $40 yearly upgrade schedule that would tie into the appstore, how everything MSFT related was gonna be tied together to the appstore, from GFWL to your Windows login for a "seamless experience", and that it was gonna continue using ads in their product to "show application developers the ease of using the Microsoft advertising API" or some shit, by then I was looking for an Apr 1st date on the thing but nope, it was real.
Believe me if there was anybody that wanted Win 8 to just be another Star Trek Rule like Vista it was me, i've been making money with MSFT software for over 25 years now, but its obvious from reading that memo that the ultimate goal is to kill DIY and the OEMs and make MSFT into just another Apple complete with stores and pricing to match. I personally think its gonna go over about as well as WinPhone but I'm already watching Valve like a hawk to see how they solve the DirectX gaming problem in Linux and if they figure it out I'm gonna take a long hard look at the next Ubuntu LTS. MSFT has already put so damned many hoops on their licenses its getting harder and harder to make a buck and if the Blue memo comes to pass the money for anybody but MSFT will just dry up.

Re:Not using imagination tech is a good news
The imagination technology drivers aren't open source, which was a big issue. Moving to an Intel video board means that it will be released as free software (unless Intel changes its policy which is very unlikely). That's a very good news for the open source platforms!
Call my cynical with these. Intels clover is not Windows 7 compatible, and the previous are not Windows 8 compatible. If intel is blowing off Windows 7 without working drivers for their newest chipsets what makes you think they will support Linux either?
They want you to blow extra $$$ for an icore5 that you do not need, and are trying to make this for tablets and phones only to stop ARM.
-
Re:Not Windows 7 compatible
The link is here. Basically some Atoms can not run WIndows 8, and clovertrail is specifically designed not to be Windows 7 compatible.
Unless any information has changed my suspicious part of me feels Intel feels threatens the low margin and is trying to make sure this stays only in tables and not in servers nor desktops which is shame. I see no reason to spend a tiny portion of R&D backporting WDDM1.2 to WDDM 1.1 so the graphics work with the Windows 7 kernel.

IE9 &/or IE10 are good
Plus, it IS "FIXED" already (well, easily mitigated fixed, that is) -> http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-releases-fix-it-patch-for-ie6-8-exploit

P.S.=> Plus - The "fixes" that the FIXIT patch automates are GOOD anyhow...
How/Why?
They cut off things that introduce TONS of hassles anyways (like javascript usage).

Ala on ecommerce or online banking sites (as prime examples)...
Otherwise?

Via it's "By Site Preferences"...
So - How does THAT help?
Well, I make a GLOBAL POLICY first (that doesn't allow javascript, plugins, JAVA, Frames/IFrames, Cookies on ANY site) - this is the default here.
Then, by site as needed? I create exceptions...
Yes - &, it works to 'cut down' risk online vs. malicious exploit too - the MAIN bonus!
The added bonus? Well - without those things running, & for NO REAL NEED, you actually SURF FASTER TOO! Bonus, again!
(Especially where you do NOT REALLY NEED THEM to get what you wanted... & in my case? That's usually information, or downloads!)

Methods that do NOT require 'huge bandwidth' & OC12 pipes to do it (ala the registry hack settings mitigations recommend by Microsoft for TCP/IP stack hardening).

Ok, but... I am WELL aware of how it works - since I have been fighting vs. crooks online for more than a decade now, actively (unlike MOST others, mere "armchair QB's" & critics galore but not much on being 'chefs') - see below.
So, yes - I KNOW HOW IT ALL WORKS & how the pricks that abuse people, companies, & nations work...
Plus - I am out there DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT - actively now, & for YEARS before it, just like my parent post here was intended to be, because the methods work... see below too, I don't like stating things without some proof of my words (unlike the trolls I have smoked here today).

Re:Shove the others under the bus
When we see these Microsoft stories it's really heartwarming to see proponents of one business division pushing the others under the bus - ensuring their counterparts will respond in kind.
It reminds us that Microsoft is a dozen warlords more at war with each other than with us.
While they seek dominance over each other we might have progress.
With this woman, who admits the goal of Metro is to kill the mouse, where we see a sea of people reaching across smearing their 8 inch tiny monitors in the office all day filing repetitive injuries in OSHA is every PHB's dream!
I happen to agree. Sinsosky was the man who killed the tablet 10 years ago with a crippled font and no Office touch support because he didn't like it. He and this woman above are now crippling their enterprise products.
Windows 8 has some awesome raid, volume storage, restore, and mobile features, and yes you can still use GPO without AD in Windows 8 with active sync. These are cool features for laptop and tablet users on the go. Just the annoying gui kills it! Windows Server 2012 is a finally a decent server OS for a VM environment unlike its past versions too. But they put the METRO gui on it. I do not care on a server but many IT admins will stick with obsolete server operating systems after shitting their pants with METRO and ignoring everything else 2012 has there-after.

Re:For those who didn't notice
Windows 8 demand on touch is so high OEMs can not meet it!
We bash it on slashdot, but consumers will refuse to touch Windows 8 on a non touch screen device and it makes sense to go all tiny screen and touch as this is where the market is heading and what the OS is optimized for touch over mouse on purpose

It'd be hard not to! Per my subject-line above? You have a sensible outlook @ least. That's the "thing" that has bugged me on THIS particular website to NO END: "FUD"...
I don't "hate Linux" either!
In fact - I rather LIKE it, especially KDE bearing distros, like KUbuntu...
I just didn't like how Mr. Shuttleworth & Canonical are "running" from RMS' statement regarding LOCAL DISK-BOUND QUERIES GOING OUT TO REMOTE SERVERS OF THEIRS!
That's like putting a surveillance camera into our homes essentially & I see RMS' point...
Additionally - I wasn't 'crazy about' how the "pr flaks" from Canonical are using "std. pr flak technique #101" of *trying* to "cut down" RMS rather than disprove his points:
---
PERTINENT QUOTE/EXCERPT:
"Instead of addressing the queries raised by Stallman http://linux.slashdot.org/story/12/12/07/1527225/rms-speaks-out-against-ubuntu [slashdot.org] and the EFF, Canonical is now pushing for making Ubuntu a shopping cart"

(Sure - Many folks consider RMS a bit odd by THEIR standards, but then again, who isn't? We're all "weird" to one another - we're NOT THE SAME in all things is why, thank goodness... however, his personal habits etc./et al are NOT in question here. His findings are... & we SEE the results!))

True, and you're correct below also... it's the SAME on any given platform in computing really!
These companies... were I they? (MS, Apple, Linux distros galore)?
I'd send out MY OS totally "secured"/"security-hardened" & I MEAN any & ALL ways in or out, shutoff...
(Then, I'd tell the user - "You open this, this can happen, but you assume responsibility doing so").
Yes, it IS doable (SeLinux, Windows multiple methods & layers for "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" etc./et al). Just takes time, & effort, as you stated. Worth it? Yes. Absolutely.

Re:It's a placebo
When looking at global marketshare for all devices (tablet, mobile, and desktop), Windows still comes in with 83% market share. Windows 8, released only 45 days ago, already runs on 25% more devices than the leading Android version (Gingerbread). In fact, it's set to surpass all of Android (coming in at a total of 2.45%, including Kindle Fire) very shortly. Only 10 days after release, Windows 8 surpassed all of Android in web traffic. So yes, Android sells a lot. But so does Windows, even today in this "post desktop" world everyone keeps insisting is upon us.
Honestly, I don't like comparing desktop to mobile, and lumping tablets, phones, and desktops/laptops into the same market share category; it feels very apples to oranges. But if you insist on asking the question "Is Microsoft/Windows still relevant given Android's success?" the answer is still a resounding "Yes."
Finally, you can call Android as "Linux" all you want, but the fact is that Android is successful on phones for all the reasons Microsoft Windows is on Desktops, and has nothing to do with the merits of FOSS software. It has broad corporate support (read: warranties), ample marketing, a thriving app ecosystem, and can be sold direct to customers on a variety of hardware platforms. The fact that Android is free and open source means nothing to the consumer. Absolutely nothing. -
Re:FUD
at the same time advising readers to stay away because of the struggling App ecosystem. Good luck attracting developers that way.
The store is actually fairing very well. Since launch, the number of apps have doubled (at about 26,000 now) and is increasing at a rate of about 20% per week. Many apps have passed the million download mark. The previous link also explains that some apps have even crossed $25k in revenue, which shifts their takeaway from 60% to 80% of revenue for life. This is very attractive to developers. Further, it looks like already the Windows store is outperforming the OSX appstore, which has been open for two years, despite the fact that as of now, more people use OSX than Windows 8. The Windows store has twice as many apps, and daily download volume is 5x higher.
I think the success of the Windows store is an eventuality due to the sheer number of licenses Windows will sell just for being Windows. For the surface and other tablets, I think this is their lifeline, as their app ecosystem will increase regardless of how Surface or any other tablet sells. -
Re:The actual reason
They're too fragile, they don't have a DVD drive, they're harder to type on, the screen is tiny, they get dirty with fingerprints, they don't run 99% of software ever written, everything they do on it is designed to cost money, the browsers don't display pages correctly, the battery life is a lie, most don't have USB flash drive capabilities, they don't work with the majority of printers, and it's difficult to do meaningful work on them in any way shape or form.
Ironically, Windows tablets did all of this and more before the iPad was introduced. I still think the reason they sold so poorly is that they cost so much and sacrificed too much performance for the touch screen. My Latitude XT retailed for over $2000 for a base model in 2008. Today's tablet PCs are a whole different breed: they don't cost much more than a regular laptop, they're just as powerful, and Windows 8 has many touch friendly features to make using them as a tablet enjoyable. This time around, it looks like Microsoft is seeing more demand for them as well.

Re:Microsoft's Windows 8 Numbers MeaninglessSorry to reply to you a couple days after you posted this, but after I read your post I got busy and didn’t have time to finish my reply. You inspired me to do some data mining, and as I’ll try to show I think the data is actually pointing in the opposite direction than your post concludes.
Your story is consistent with the facts you’ve presented, but you haven’t presented all of the facts. Allow me to present the other side of the story to try and add some more context to help your extrapolation:Huh? Microsoft themselves has already admitted that Windows 8 sales are at nearly the EXACT same pace as Windows 7 sales
No, what was said is that Windows 8 sales are in line with Windows 7. We can look at the historical figures to see how Win7 sold; over the course of its lifetime Windows 7 sold on average a pretty flat 20M licenses a month. In the first few months of release it sold an average of 26M licenses a month; during its first 70 days on sale, MS Win7 sold 60M licenses. If they sold 40M in the first 30 days, that leaves only 20M units to sell over the next 40 days including the Christmas season and Black Friday. Selling at this rate (15M a month) is well below what Win7 sold during the rest of its lifetime (20M). The numbers don’t just make sense.
However, what does make sense is that current sales of Win8 are in line with Win7. As I’ll show later, current market share growth of Win8 as measured by statcounter is, in fact, in line with Win7.Okay... How about actual web usage
Sure, let’s take a closer look though, instead of just reporting a simple difference and calling it a day. Foremost, if you take a look at the actual data, Win8 is growing much differently than Win7 did when it was first released. While Win7 market share grew linearly after launch, Win8 is growing either quadratically, or at least has hit an inflection point and will continue linear growth that about matches (or slightly exceeds) Win7.
Take a look at these figures, derived from worldwide statcounter data. (Statcounter doesn’t publish Win8 data on its own yet, but did so for the period of 10/1 – 11/28 here. To get Win8 stats outside this range, I took the average ‘Linux’ and ‘Other’ (both of which have no growth; average daily change for Linux is .0002, and .002 for Other) percent share from the linked data, and subtract that from the current ‘Other’ data, and what’s left is a good estimate of Win8 share.)
The first chart shows the market share of Win8 over the past 14 days (11/1912-12/2/12), and Win7 over the comparable 14 day period in 2009 (11/15/09 – 11/28/09). If you fit a line to this data, you can see that Win8 is growing at a rate comparable (actually a bit faster) to Win7. The second image shows growth of Win7 over the first quarter of availability, and Growth of Win8 until today. The chart also contains two Win8 growth projections: quadratic (fitted to all the data) and linear (fitted to the past two weeks of data). Even though the quadratic curve is a better fit, the linear projection is probably more likely to pan out and shows Win7-like growth. Either way, what’s clear is that Win8 is not growing the same way Win7 did (linear right out of the gate). There was either a slow start and its growing linearly now, or it’s growing quadratically.
Finally in the figure, I have a comparison of percent growth since launch. You keep making reference that Win8 is behind Win7 in absolute terms, but you are not revealing that Win7 started at a much higher percentage than Win8: 2.21% vs. 0.38%. Even Vista started at a high percentage, at 0.6% according to your w3sch -
You know its pretty bad
... when even Windows-fan-boi site Neowin.net, the anti slashdot talks about how WIndows 8 is failing and what went wrong afterwards.
Basically, Sinofsky made the decision to drop the start button in a meeting with Balmer saying it was a must if users were to get used to Metro. They must get immersed so Windows 8 phones can sell more etc.
Here is a little business 101 lesson. Your customers decide which UI you use and how you design your product. Not the other way around! Every company that told customers this is what you will do and how you will like it do poorly or go under. No one listens to them and MBAs feel it is their job to convert customers and tell them what to do.
They feel to acknowledge the customer can just walk out the door and take his or her business elsewhere.
So they fired Sinsosky and that is a good thing. Sad, as he did a great job for Windows 7 but they did not do any QA or UI usability testing with METRO. Just get it out FAST!! and it was was rushed. Customers hate change and Windows 7 works just fine thank you very much.
After numbers come it the problem will only get worse. Lets hope they do not something really stupid like get rid of the desktop entirely and just be a tablet company now. They lost focus on their core strengths which is another business 101 lesson you never do. They are not a consumer gadget entertainment company and they killed their number one product and money to get there. Wow! Balmer should be fired next too

The link with the 3 year old is here. Also Hairy your store deals with the less technological users. People under 30 know how to reinstall their OS and clean malware for the most part and can figure out Windows 8. THe over +50 grandmas probably just left AOL a few users ago and do not what a tab is when they open IE 8 or dragon assuming you install it.

Re:Difference: They still call both Windows.
Windows 8 has everything Windows RT has, but it also has an extra tile called "Desktop Mode" where you can run software designed for desktop mode.
Not quite. Windows RT also has a prominent tile called "Desktop Mode," which looks identical to Windows 8's desktop mode. See here for more information: http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-rt-desktop-mode-gets-detailed-better-than-expected
And here's a lovely video of Windows RT's desktop mode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4D06Lb0W37w

I read this as well as neowin because I figured the truth is somewhere in between.

Re:The best way to deal with this
According to posters at Neowin yep and a Google search shows several posts at sites owned by them with the same text so I'm thinking...yeah we might ought to be looking for another geek site to hang our hats as the last thing the world needs is another EnGadget or Gawker where only corporate approved postings are allowed. If they could do something about Thom and his biases OSNews is pretty geeky but not up to
/. standards, but if the Dice crap becomes SOP here I'll have no choice but move on, not dealing with corporate censorship.Damn, you just hate to see a site go down the shitter like that. I agree we'll need official confirmation but if this is policy frankly with all the differing opinions here it won't take long before we'll see that text more often if its corporate policy. if it is? Then so long Slashdot and thanks for all the fish.

P.S.=> SO, as I said above: Things I personally have done around the arena of computer security on a PC?
The guide I quoted from above is featured ALL OVER THE PLACE online & it actually works (here's some testimonials from a user that applied it TO THE LETTER for himself, friends, family, & even paid customers):
To "immunize" a Windows system, I effectively use the principles in "layered security" possibles!

I.E./E.G.-> I have done so since 1997-1998 with the most viewed, highly rated guide online for Windows security there really is which came from the fact I also created the 1st guide for securing Windows, highly rated @ NEOWIN (as far back as 1998-2001) here:
http://www.neowin.net/news/apk-a-to-z-internet-speedup--security-text
& from as far back as 1997 -> http://web.archive.org/web/20020205091023/www.ntcompatible.com/article1.shtml which Neowin above picked up on & rated very highly.
That has evolved more currently, into the MOST viewed & highly rated one there is for years now since 2008 online in the 1st URL link above...
Which has well over 500,000++ views online (actually MORE, but 1 site with 75,000 views of it went offline/out-of-business) & it's been made either:
---
1.) An Essential Guide
2.) 5-5 star rated
3.) A "sticky-pinned" thread
4.) Most viewed in the category it's in (usually security)
5.) Got me PAID by winning a contest @ PCPitStop (quite unexpectedly - I was only posting it for the good of all, & yes, "the Lord works in mysterious ways", it even got me PAID -> http://techtalk.pcpitstop.com/2007/09/04/pc-pitstop-winners/ (see January 2008))---
Across 15-20 or so sites I posted it on back in 2008... & here is the IMPORTANT part, in some sample testimonials to the "layered security" methodology efficacy:
---
SOME QUOTED TESTIMONIALS TO THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SAID LAYERED SECURITY GUIDE I AUTHORED:
"I recently, months ago when you finally got this guide done, had authorization to try this on simple work station for kids. My client, who paid me an ungodly amount of money to do this, has been PROBLEM FREE FOR MONTHS! I haven't even had a follow up call which is unusual." - THRONKA, user of my guide @ XTremePcCentral

"APK, thanks for such a great guide. This would, and sh

Same here since 1996 because of this
I got "suckered" by DCC transfer on IRC (got a "lemon" from a pal there no less I knew for years 1994-2000), & because of it?
Well - I decided to learn how to DO something about it & other threats online and, to share it with others!
The result? This below ( & yes, it works, IF followed "to the letter"):

* The ONLY time I got infested was on IRC using DCC transfers (got a "lemon" from a pal no less - I too had to learn what the dangers are online & was my OWN "weakest link" but after that? Nothing since, due to my learning what's in the guide above I authored!)...
What's above? Helps... & even SUGGESTS what this EMET tool is doing for IE (and more - pure "layered-security"/"defense-in-depth" and yes, it works).

P.S.=> Here's a testimonial from a fellow that did extremely well using what that security guide for Windows NT-based OS users I authored & what HE experienced for YEARS no less, for himself, family, friends, & yes - even CUSTOMERS and, of course, I've been enjoying the same...
