Re:First Intel, now AMD?
Oh wow Alex being a FOSSie and throwing insults, surprise surprise. Hey here is a video of RMS you'll find enlightening and as a public service allow me to post some facts (with links, which of course you can NEVER provide) to give those that aren't sucking GNUoolaid some information about the product you keep championing blindly like a Moonie following his master.
How about a nice kernel exploit? Or how about the guy that wrote EEEBuntu saying Ubuntu sucks? which considering they are the current savior of Linux kinda tells you something.
How sad was it that even when a bug was spreading through OSX there were writers pointing out that's no reason to torture yourself with Linux , after all even a virus ridden OSX actually runs which is more than most distros LOL! But hey, you can always tell them they can fix it otherwise they don't need that right? LOL! And I noticed you just couldn't fricking resist screaming "Nigger!" which in FOSSie is done by screaming PaidMicrosoftShill, hey you think you could throw in one more FOSSie cliche please? Then I'll have a FOSSie Flush ROFL!
But if you didn't have cliches and your pathetic attempts at insults why then you might have to have an independent thought and realize what everybody knows that even when MSFT put out a universally reviled OS you STILL got curb stomped, does that give you ANY clues? or all they all brainwashed by those black choppers that have been following you? Hell when the Chinese were given the choice of your "free OS" or pirating Windows they chose the latter even if it meant staying on XP and using IE fricking 6, LOL! Does that ring ANY bells? A smart person would say "what are we doing wrong the other guy is doing right?" but a FOSSie who is just like a Moonie in that they blindly follow, instead says "Its all a conspiracy! They are all shills keeping the masses from true salvation!" and then you wonder why we all laugh at you because you DON'T Listen, you DON'T learn, and Torvalds could take a big steaming dump and hand it to you and you'd thank him for his generous gift. So enjoy that fresh bitchslapping loony, enjoy the fact that the world really doesn't care...but I do, I enjoy slapping you, it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Re:Hope it has a media slot
AFAIK the stock OS on the Nexus 7 doesn't recognise USB storage devices, which is a shame. Keyboards definitely work fine.
You have to root it, but Stickmount works on the Nexus 7: http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1093875-how-to-use-usb-drives-with-nexus-7-root/

Re:Apple is dead to me
I used to recommend people to buy their computers. I actually specifically tell people "just about anything but Apple" now.Congratulations Apple. You might have won this battle (for now, appeal pending) but I assure you that you've lost the war.
Yeah you should tell them to buy a PC with a Microsoft OS, that great paragon of morality. Maybe a Samsung Windows 8 laptop with their "innovative" new Samsung S Launcher. Or maybe it'll finally be the year of the Linux desktop.

GAUNTLET keyboard
Get in touch with these guys: http://gauntletkeyboard.com/
They are working on a VERY EARLY prototype of a keyboard glove that looks very promising if you can look past the ugliness of the prototype.
Trying to get funding... http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1099959-help-me-get-10000-from-best-buy-for-my-invention/page__fromsearch__1
Why they don't just stick it on Kickstarter, I have no idea, but it is something I can across which could be of some use, I'm sure they would need a good test use case to show off it's benefits if this thing works. -

Re:Lack of control?
And you and him are being a idiot if you think you cant do all of that on a iPad. For one thing the iOS encryption has been ruled as uncrackable (meaning it would take way more time and effort to crack the encryption than it would be worth not that it is impossible to crack). http://www.neowin.net/news/ios-encryption-is-impossible-to-crack-by-nsas-standards For another you can inspect all communications off the iPad no problem and even block what apps are allowed on it with any of the number of MDM solutions out there including the one Apple provides with OS X Server. So no he is not being sensible and you are being a FUD loving fucktard.

APK reacts FINE (it's not my "sole existence")
Just fine - I've done a number of posts on the source site already, posting portions of what I have here a ton of times (mind you, which my "skeptic naysayers" here haven't disproven a single shred of to date)... I'm just waiting for the page to update for responses I gave others there (takes time on some boards, part of what I LIKE about
/. is "instant on" with posts). It's not a "demise" by the by - MS Sec Essentials is the KEY "workaround"... so you know. There's another I posted but it hasn't come up yet there (databasepath parm in tcp/ip parms in registry & redirecting it).
You obviously also aren't aware of some of my posts over time here. I've been "into" a LOT more than hosts my man... a LOT more. I'll post some for YOUR reference after this post as an "addendum"... fair enough? Good.
Anyways:
Do I *like* what I saw on Win8 there? Heck no... especially NOT on hosts files!
However/Then again??
MS "fanboy" extraordinaire here or not??
I don't think much of Win8, due to "METRO"! Man, I've said it before - MS has to get rid of Mr. Ballmer & his crew responsible for it... too far, too fast, not enough market on PC's yet for touch screen (tablets, & phones, yes... PC OS? No!)
Not that he's some evil guy, in fact, I hear he's a hell of a NICE guy who's great @ grooming mgt. talent (& that's also from an MS mgt. man named Foredecker who posts here or did). I've said this many times here before in fact.
However - He's not a "King Billy" calibre man, who was a computer coder/technologist AND business man... that's what MS needs.
Fact is - of ALL the MS guys I am aware of, personally or otherwise?
I hope Russinovich, former "co-worker" of mine thru Sunbelt where we sold wares together takes over 1 day. We've had diff.'s over time, but he'd get MY vote.
Anyways - Pity is, Win8 "under-the-covers" is BETTER than Win7 even in a LOT of ways, such as "self-terminating services"!
(Which tuners/tweakers like myself have been into for decades, ala my guides for it from 1997 onwards, & I'd be as bold to say they WERE the 1st of their kind, as I have yet to find older ones).

Re:Paid for
Wish I could spare the time to find ya a better link but I'm ass deep in work right now bro and when you type shutdown and Win 8 in Google you find 50 bazillion people having problems...gee i wonder why? Anyway this is the best I can do but el Reg reported after the CP release (maybe you should search their site) that this is indeed the default behavior and you have to use a MS KB article to disable and force "classic" shutdown. Maybe look up "Win 8 hybrid boot"? I just ain't got the time to spare friend, sorry.

History shows otherwise (you vs. me)
"Ahem, the entire line was that group policy makes booting slower." - by UnknowingFool (672806) on Friday August 17, @08:06AM (#41022259)
No, I said disabling SERVICES via policies, or other means like a
.reg file merge in a logon script (you DO know what those are, right? GpEdit allows for that, as it does parsing autoexec.bat even!) can speed up booting!Which, of course? It does!
AND
As a bonus, it saves CPU cycles, RAM, & other forms of I/O - as well as electricity too (bonus)...
Again - YOUR READING? Needs work!
It works to speed up booting - Just as it does in Win8 with its "self-terminating services", & it's JUST LIKE what "tweakers/tuners" like myself, having written the FIRST GUIDE ON IT in existence for Windows NT-based OS knows better than just about anyone does:
I.E./E.G.-> I have done so since 1997-1998 with the most viewed, highly rated guide online for Windows security there really is which came from the fact I also created the 1st guide for securing Windows, highly rated @ NEOWIN (as far back as 1998-2001) here:

Thus?

Re:The catch-22 for Steam's lock-in
AFAIK, there are several issues: Windows 8 won't allow side-loading of apps on ARM computers, so Steam is going to be completely locked out of Microsoft's big ARM push, including the MS Surface tablet which might be popular. W8 also won't allow side loading of Metro apps at all (unless you are a developer or enterprise) and so if developers want to use Metro features, then they won't be able to distribute via Steam. If W8 on ARM is popular, and say 25% of sales are on that platform, then Steam is going to be a lot less useful as a distribution platform because developers are going to want to target ARM devices, and since they're forced to build and distribute via the Windows Store anyway, it becomes more work to target a dual-distribution platform. Microsoft has already stated that alternative web browsers won't be allowed on ARM, so there is little chance that they will allow an alternative distribution channel, and even if they did, they would want some percentage (30%?) of Valve's income so it's not going to happen.
Aside from ARM issues, Steam has 70%+ of the market for distribution of Windows video games. Once Microsoft have an alternative app Store it is going to be competing directly against Steam. The amusing thing is that all this fuss is over a unified distribution channel, which is a new feature for Windows but which the Linux distributions have had for almost two decades now.
Windows 7 doesn't work on ARM either.
So really, it's no different.

Re:...now you have to ask yourself 'Which HTML5?'"
The one supported by by Webkit and Gecko?
Indeed. That is already a problem?
To me HTML 5 is too ambitions and big like trying to swallow a horse rather than one bite at a time approach. I think it should be split into several versions of HTML 5,6, and 7 etc.
-
W3C should accelerate the process
W3C slowed down because Microsoft refused to play along for so long and they are part of the committee. With the about face of IE 9/10 that problem should go away as all browsers rapidly race towards incorporating CSS 3 and HTML 5 features first including simply proposals that are not even draft yet!
I favor cutting off HTML 5 proposals now to finalize it faster. THen put the newer features in webkit and Gecko in HMTL 6. If people are getting giddy about HTML 6 accelerated SVG and ajax stuff it will put pressure to retire IE 8. It will be perceived as very obsolete much quicker and non compliant otherwise the corps wont leave which will mean CSS 2.1 and HTML 4 until 2019.
That thing is a thorn in our side and it will become the new IE 6 of this decade because it comes with Windows 7.
Also doing this will prevent Chrome from becoming the next non standard browser as well.

For a more detailed look
Arstechnica has a more comprehensive review.
Also they were kind enough to divide the new features by individual product. Word is here, so is excel, outlook, as well as powerpoint.
I just briefly went through them but the general improvements is that you can share documents with your coworkers with its cloud add ons as well as import and export your work documents with integrated skydrive from your work/home pcs. For individual programs, Excel has a new intellisense that works in cells so you can select commonly used names and formulas with a transparent window that wont obstruct your data. MS calls this ghosting. Outlook has Bing and map integration for directions and travel data as well as having a multiview pane so you do not have to close the calendar to view your todo list for example. Word, well I didn't see anything worthwhile except for some extra formatting options for brochures and other material and a souped up track it list where you can even do text messages in them for things like "Bob redo these figures - boss". Does this mean they are axing MS Publisher? They seem to be covering the same functionality. There is some other stuff that I will read later because it is detailed.
What is clear is this is surprisingly strongly aimed at corporations. MS is getting back to its strength as a groupware product that ties to corporate infrastructure.
The ones who still are holding on to IE 6/8, XP, and Office 2k3. College students or home users will not see that much improvement. Also Neowin mentioned MS is killing both Vista and XP support with Office 2013. This office suite is aimed to get those corporations dragging their feet with Windows 7. -

Re:Interesting technology
the evidence is lacking.
I think in Microsoft's defense, they know there are a metric shitton of pirated copies of Windows.
It's one thing to say some of the people who pirate wouldn't if another method was available. It's another to say that when 90% of Windows in China are pirated. At least SOME of those 90% would have paid for it if pirating weren't an alternative.
Microsoft has been on record as saying that they'd rather you pirate their software then purchase the competitors.
The real issue is stopping competition. The *AAs don't want you paying indie media producers. Microsoft doesn't want you downloading a free operating system or office suit.
This technology can just as easily target legitimate uses of bit-torrent, even if it only by stopping its use for anything. -

As are high-end Android phones
It is well known that iPhones use too much data for no good reason.
With what servers are they communicating? The article you linked doesn't go into any detail about the kinds of traffic that iPhone 4S users generate. The press release about the study claims that the 4S is roughly comparable in data volume to high-end Android phones. Does the study itself give details about the specific types of traffic?

Re:Imagine
For the last time, Apple is not microsoft and is not a convicted monopolist. Your comparison is retarded. When Apple holds ~85% share of all computers EVERYWHERE, then you can start making valid comparisons between the two.
DOJ oversight ended recently http://www.neowin.net/news/doj-oversight-of-microsoft-ends
The iPad holds about 60 to 90% of the installed base of tablets and it doesn't bans Netscape(Firefox) from even running, forget about getting trouble for just bundling Safari by default like MS did.

You want some fresh bitch slapping? Be careful what you wish for FOSSie, how about a nice kernel exploit? Or how about the guy that wrote EEEBuntu saying Ubuntu sucks which considering they are the current savior of Linux kinda tells you something. But why don't you say "Use Distro X" and then have the balls to name the X so i can show its just as big a POS, huh? BTW frankly everyone has stop giving a fuck about your OS, you aren't even newsworthy anymore really. Now its all Win 7&8, OSX&iOS, and of course Android which just shows what happens when a company bitch slaps the community and takes it away from them, why it actually fucking runs!
How sad that even with a bug spreading through OSX there are writers pointing out that's no reason to torture yourself with Linux , after all even a virus ridden OSX actually runs which is more than most distros LOL!
Right, because we should expect 100% of the US population to understand network security and know how to properly secure a wifi router. Makes perfect sense!
Also, this.

For now, they get 1 benefit
"Security-By-Obscurity" - lack of users = lack of attacks. Android proves otherwise though, especially for Linux variants, where it is "king of the smartphone world", OS-wise, & is being attacked rampantly.

Sure, with a bit of education & good easy to use tools to help them thru it, such as CIS Tool ( http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9018362/CIS_tool_aims_to_help_federal_agencies_check_Windows_security_settings ) &/or guides like this one I did in 2007 onwards (& I've been doing them since 1997):

Re:Slashdot, please quote the whole paragraph
Well, see the difference pointed here. I like SkyDrive's statement: Microsoft is granted rights
solely to the extent necessary to provide the service.
This is nice, clear and limited, and exactly matches my understanding of the relationship with the company. In contrast, Google's ToS is more vague and completely unlimited, in that that it applies not only to the services I signed for but to any new ones Google may want to develop. I have no control or knowledge what those new services may be or whether I want my data used that way. Moreover, by agreeing to Google's ToS I also have to give access to my data to any company Google decides to work with, again without my control or knowledge.
You note some people "imply" that Google may sell your data without your consent. I'd say it's a pretty reasonable suspicion, given Google's business model. You rightly point that the IP remains yours, but I think you're missing an important point: "selling your data" isn't limited to the data itself, but also to all facts that can be inferred from your files. Google can analyse your data and extract a lot of things, and that information can be valuable to all kinds of third parties you know nothing about and maybe wouldn't want to know facts about you. For example, Google may check your list of e-books and find out you're interested in science fiction, or maybe dieting, or have a penchant for fetish erotica. This is very much the type of data Google's advertising arm is interested in, and their ToS allows them to extract and sell it, while Microsoft's doesn't.

There's TONS U can do (to make ANY OS more secure)
For Windows, I've been writing up such guides since 1997 to present, ala -> http://www.bing.com/search?q=%22HOW+TO+SECURE+Windows+2000%2FXP%22&go=&qs=ns&form=QBLH & YES, it really does work (on very common-sense principles too largely, & largely with tools ALREADY PRESENT in the OS itself).
(The originals are from 2001 -> http://www.neowin.net/news/apk-a-to-z-internet-speedup--security-text & from as far back as 1997 -> http://web.archive.org/web/20020205091023/www.ntcompatible.com/article1.shtml )
Yes - The same goes for Apple/MacOS X:
http://isc.sans.edu/diary.html?storyid=12616
And, yes - The same goes for Linux variants:
http://www.bing.com/search?q=%22HOW+TO+Secure+Linux%22&go=&qs=ns&form=QBLH
* NONE OF THEM SHIP AS SECURED AS IS POSSIBLE "outta-the-box/oem-stock" is why... & as you can see? Folks in the community out there (like myself shown above) for years have been putting out guides for securing Windows (and the same goes for MacOS X &/or Linux too) - &, per the single example above from Apple? So do the oem's of these OS!
APK
P.S.=> The OEM's of these OS ship them that way so that "things just work right off" when you setup your machines & Operating Systems is my guess, but... it's "on you", as the end-users, to do the rest typically's all!

All merchandisers know that iUsers have more money than sense and price accordingly.
Note: this is not to say that they have a lot of money, but rather that they don't have much sense.
There is a myth that goes something like "Macs are expensive, therefore only the wealthy can afford them.". Not the case - in fact it is the opposite - these people simply do not know how to manage their money.

Oh, I always do (&, lol, it'd be the FORMER here) - & the facts from reputable sites that have them documented I use, do the job for me, the best, in that regard...
Plus, pretty much everyone here knows who I am (been around here since 2003-2004) by this timeframe... many of the "penguins" around here can't stand me because I use documented undeniable current information, like in the 1st post of mine here you replied to!
(However, I imagine the slashdot editors & owners just LOVE me, because controversy generates pageviews, which I pretty much always "generate" here by using facts Penguins can't deny w/out their std. effete retaliatory trolling off topic illogical adhominem based attacks they have to resort to when they cannot disprove the facts I use, does that much, easily!)
Also, as far as registering?
Hey - I honestly don't feel I actually gain anything by having a "registered 'luser'" account here really!
(Other than losing out on granting mod points, which I can merely say "good job" in reply to folks as needed by writing it out, or, even recommending those with mod points mod the poster up).

First of all: Thanks!
I've already seen it go from +1 Interesting, to 0 Interesting, to +2 Interesting (quite the "roller coaster ride" eh?) back down to +1 Interesting ratings!
(So 'feedback' is coming per your point in upward mods - the downmods are doubtless from "the Penguinista" trying to bury the documented current & verifiable facts I posted, most likely).

I've been writing guides for that since 1997 in fact, & yes, they CAN & DO actually work (e.g.-> I haven't been "hit" by a malware since 1996, & because of what's in the guide - in fact, I WROTE IT because of that (really PISSED ME OFF is why, & when that happens, with anything? If I have the means, I do something about it))...
Also, neither have my friends, family, or paying customers that apply + follow its principles.
