Software companies would be doing that already
Given the amount of money the BSA thinks is being lost to software piracy, they would have implemented such measures already if it were practical.
Side note: Wisely, the BSA runs its web site using free software.

Re:Linux doesn't support many modems"In fact, the execution of asynchronous I/O in Linux is quite poor, especially when compared to Windows. Really ?
"Another serious setback for Linux is the lack of a journalling file system. Hu, get out.
"It just isn't there yet! Too bad I will have to wait many years for Linux to become a viable option in the operating system arena."Too bad it can't run on any of the worlds busiest websites. Slashdot recieves close to 2 million hits a day. I wonder what OS slashdot runs on?
"Please, let us also be honest and present Linux and all its many shortcomings when you are downtalking Windows."....and please be honest and present Windows and all its many shortcomings when you are downtalking linux.
No OS is perfect but the fact of the matter is over a that over a third of websites run linux and we are the fastest growing OS out there. Only Windows and Macos has more users. I couldn't find the link in time( I have better thigs to do). This shows linux is not as bad as many like you think. Sure no OS is perfect but the links above show linux is quite powerfull and ready for the enterprise in most situations. Alot more then Windows I may add. Also I am very suspicious with anyone with the word troll in there name. -
Re:Slashdotted already - Offtopic
according to Netcraft, www.designtechnica.com is running Apache/1.3.19 (Unix) FrontPage/4.0.4.3. So no IIS.

Atypical!
First, 43 times is a lot more than the absurd "twice" claimed by the original poster. Your retort is anemic at best.
Second, 305 is about 600% more than 43. You can say it's 7 times as many, if you're trying to be honest.
Third, the U.S. government maintains far more hosts on the 'Net than the U.K. government does. Netcraft records only 1073 web sites in gov.uk, and 6290 -- that's nearly 5.86 times as many -- hosts in .gov. And that's just web servers.
I don't claim the U.S. is a whole lot better at securing their hosts than the U.K., but the converse is certainly unsupported by the evidence. -
HEY I JUST FOUND OUT SOMETHING GREAT!
Goatse.cx runs Apache/1.3.20 (Unix) on Linux!!!!!!
I am amazed that someone didn't point this out earlier. I went to Netcraft and just typed the Goatse.cx address in the search and vollia, up comes these magic words!!! "Apache/1.3.20 (Unix) on Linux"
Lets all rejoice at our Goatse brethren who share with us in this great thing called Linux.
GO SEE FOR YOURSELF WHAT GOATSE.CX RUNS!
Anyone know the IP address of Goatse.cx? If we use this instead of the address most people know it will fool many more people into going to Goatse!!! -
Why then is Microsoft itself using Linux?

next generation Apache ready for prime time??
Covalent is confident that the next generation Apache is mature and is ready for prime time.
And i thought it was already mature enough, otherwise why did it become the most popular web server?
btw, what is new with apache 2.0? (i am too lazy to read the docs ;-) -
Linux popular on the most popular italian sitesI do not know how the situation is going in corporate networks, but if I look at the first 20 italian web sites per number of users (source: OneTone, September 2001 -very reasonable), I have the following systems (using Netcraft's survey data):
- iol.it Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) on Linux
- www.virgilio.it Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) on Solaris
- msn.it Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000
- supereva.it Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) on Linux
- tiscali.it Apache/1.3.20 (Unix) on Linux
- yahoo.com unknown on FreeBSD
- microsoft.com Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000
- msn.com Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000
- yahoo.it unknown on FreeBSD
- www.clarence.com Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) on Linux
- kataweb.it Apache/1.3.20 (Unix) on Solaris
- inwind.it Apache/1.3.14 (Unix) on Linux
- passport.com Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Windows 2000
- jumpy.it Squid/2.3.STABLE4 on Solaris
- www.tripod.it Apache/1.3.20 (Unix) on Linux
- xoom.it Apache/1.2.5 on FreeBSD
- gsmbox.com Apache/1.3.17 (Unix) on Linux
- lycos.it Apache/1.3.20 (Unix) on Linux
- tuttogratis.it Apache/1.3.14 (Unix) (Red-Hat/Linux) on Linux.
- altavista.it Resin/1.2.1 on Linux
So, 50% linux, Win2000 just on Microsoft sites, three Solaris, three with FreeBSD.
Not bad. At least on the web side... - iol.it Apache/1.3.12 (Unix) on Linux

From the thank-you-capt-obvious department....How is this news? Netcraft said this way back in their June Report:
"Linux is the second most commonly used operating system. Linux has been consistently gaining share since this survey started, but interestingly not significantly to Windows detriment. Operating systems which have lost share have been Solaris and other proprietary operating systems, and to a small degree BSD."
Also, why didn't the article spell out the loser? It's Sun, Sun, Sun, Sun, SUN! Sun is getting clobbered on all fronts. Their hardware is nice, but not so nice that is it needed for 90% of the applications on which it is used.Solaris, their operating system, has few advantages over Linux, nowadays. Frankly, without adding the GNU tools, Solaris is virtually unusable! (And, who's gonna pay $10k for their compiler when GCC does the job?)
Sun is about to hit a brick wall. Unless they change direction dramatically, Linux is going to gobble them up, just as SGI consumed Cray. Cray was meaningful for a long time, until the capabilities of "Minis" (as Supercomputer folk like to refer to UNIX machines) silently approched the power of super computers at a fraction of the cost.
The same is happening with Linux-Sun. For a small fraction of the cost, Linux on commodity hardware (Intel) is approching the power of Sun's products. It's inevitable, without some sigificant change.

Adequacy is dying!
Adequacy is dying
Yet another crippling bombshell hit the beleaguered Adequacy community when last month Slashdot confirmed that Adequacy accounts for less than a fraction of 1 percent of all trolling. Coming on the heels of the latest Geekizoid survey which plainly states that Adequacy has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. Adequacy is collapsing in complete disarray, as further exemplified by placing third-to-last in AST's recent listing of top five trollsites.
You don't need to be a streetlawyer [geocities.com] to predict Adequacy.org [adequacy.org]'s future. The hand writing is on the wall: Adequacy [adequacy.org] faces a bleak future. In fact there won't be any future at all for Adequacy.org [adequacy.org] because Adequacy [adequacy.org] is dying. Things are looking very bad for Adequacy [adequacy.org]. As many of us are already aware, Adequacy [adequacy.org] continues to lose site traffic.
Let's try to keep the facts and look at the numbers.
Slashdot [washington.edu] leader Rob "CmdrTaco" [cmdrtaco.net] Malda states that there are about 5000 semi-regular posters to Slashdot.org [washington.edu]. How many users of Geekizoid [geekizoid.com] are there? The ratio of Slashdot [washington.edu] to Geekizoid [geekizoid.com] posts is roughly in ratio of 100 to 1. Therefore there are about 5000/100 = 50 occasional Geekizoid [geekizoid.com] posters. The ratio of Adequacy [adequacy.org] posters to Geekizoid [geekizoid.com] posters is about 5 to 1. Therefore there are 50 * 5 = 250 occasional posters to Adequacy.org [adequacy.org]. This is approximately equal to the number of editors [adequacy.org] listed on Adequacy [adequacy.org]'s website added to the eleven non-editors who read the site.
Traffic [adequacy.org] to Adequacy [adequacy.org] continues to diminish. In July 2001, Adequacy [adequacy.org] received approximately 160,000 pageviews. In August, Adequacy [adequacy.org] received only 80,000 pageviews. The number of pageviews in September (as of September 10, when Adequacy cowardlyly hid their statistics) is 60,000, a paltry 37% of its July traffic. At current rates, the amount of Adequacy [adequacy.org] traffic will hit 0 by the end of the year.
According to Netcraft [netcraft.com], Adequacy [adequacy.org]'s situation is grim. Due to the troubles of Speakeasy DSL [speakeasy.org], DoS attacks and so on, Adequacy [adequacy.org] was forced out of business and was taken over by JAT Computer Consulting [jatnet.com] which hosts another troubled website [geekizoid.com]. Now JAT Computer Consulting [jatnet.com] is also dying, its corpse being turned over to another charnel house.
All major surveys show that Adequacy [adequacy.org] has steadily declined in readership. Adequacy [adequacy.org] is very sick and its long term survival prospects are very dim. If Adequacy [adequacy.org] is to survive at all it will be among right-wing maniacs [mynra.com], Libertarians [nazi.org], and trolls [kuro5hin.org]. Adequacy [adequacy.org] continues to decay. Nothing short of a miracle [thepope.org] could save it at this point in time. For all practical purposes, Adequacy.org [adequacy.org] is dead.

Apache is successfully competing with IIS, in fact it is in the lead. You can validate this here.
Why do you even post here? I read somewhere that you're retarded, is this true? -
Re:*BSD is dying
Coming on the heels of the latest Netcraft survey which plainly states that *BSD has lost more market share, this news serves to reinforce what we've known all along. *BSD is collapsing in complete disarray, as further exemplified by failing dead last [sysadminmag.com] in the recent Sys Admin comprehensive networking test.
Erm, yeah. Since you're so fond of Netcraft's stats maybe you should take a look at Netcraft's Top 50 Uptimes and see which OS is heavily represented! :P -
Re:something weird on netcraft
Read the FAQ!
Why do you report impossible operating system/server combinations ?
Webservers that operate behind a load balancer, reverse proxy server or a firewall will often report the operating system of the load balancer, reverse proxy or firewall server. Hence reports of 'Microsoft/IIS on Linux' indicate that either the web server is behind a Linux server that is acting as a reverse proxy, has been configured to send a different signature or Microsoft have released a version of IIS for Linux. -
A non infected microsoft owned server?

Re:Education Dept. ISN'T
Actually, there is no prohibition about using other browsers/OSs to fill out the FAFSA, the page you referred to is only a warning that the other browsers aren't supported, which means if you run into a problem you can't get tech support to help you figure out what is wrong. Given that they support Netscape running on both Windows or Mac, I I expect you won't have problems using Netscape on Linux to fill it out. As to the version of Netscape supported, blame Netscape for that, it took from v4.7x until 6.1 to get a relatively stable product. Since that was only recently completed, it will be a while before they certify 6.1 for technical support.
As to supported OS's, if you do a Netcraft check, you'll see that ED.gov uses a variety of OS's for the webservers - primarily Solaris and WinNT but with a mix of others like HP-UX (including the FAFSA site itself) thrown in as well. For desktops within the agency itself though, its strictly a Win95/2000 shop. You can run Red Hat if you like, but don't plan on using the helpdesk much if you do (then again, you much less likely to need to, right?)
-
And netcraft says.....
According to netcraft's September stats 36.53% of the
.gov websites were running MS IIS and 31.92% were running Apache, go here for further details. Interestingly there don't appear to be stats for .gov sites prior to last month (it looks like they just started polling .gov sites perhaps? Only 3581 were polled). I wonder what those numbers will look like one year from now. -

OS != web server
I work in Yahoo's infrastructure group, and I've never even heard of iPlant. However, I do know that we use FreeBSD boxes by the thousands
Yahoo use FreeBSD as the OS and iPlanet (which is another name for Netscape Enterprise Server afaicr) as their web server.
The percentage may be small, but you neglected to report the fact that it's growing
Not according to the latest Netcraft survey. I personally I like FreeBSD but Linux has so many easy to use tools and so much support which for me is more important than raw performance.

Tried to poll their site to see how many other users use linux, and I'm sure that there is a way but I don't have the time to find it right now. I sure that you can get reports on who uses linux. If you want, punch in some high profile companies into that search and see who pops up, or go over to the "longest uptime" pages and notice that most are BSD/Linux.
(BTW - "da99@COFFEEhome.com minus caffeine" should be "da99@NOCOFFEEhome.com add caffeine") - interesting overall view

Microsoft's stats.zone.com runs on Linux...
A quick glance through Netcraft's Most requested sites over the last 30 days shows that part of Microsoft's Zone website stats.zone.com runs on Linux using Apache/1.3.9 (Unix) mod_fastcgi/2.2.2.
Love it! -
OS detection still needs work, anyway
I would suggest taking the OS reports as only a rough estimate. Their OS detection needs a lot of work. My OS/2 server has been seen as Tru64/Digital UNIX since I upgraded the stack two years ago, and they're still "working on it". The stack is an IBM port from code that is similar to, but not derived from, BSD 4.4, so I don't know why they keep making that mistake.

The P wordSun Chairman and CEO Scott McNealy held a press conference today to warn corporate IT executives about the insidious, "Pac-Man-like" nature of the Intel x86 architecture. "Look at this!" he exclaimed, pointing to a chart. "The Intel architecture is gobbling up the entire computer market!"
Intel had no comment at press time.

Seems they need it !
It seems NSA needs a "security enhanced" OS for its own website. If you look at the statistic of their website on netcraft , it seems that they have to reboot their solaris servers every 3 days !
-
Ack! Don't hit them - they host me too!OK, firstly a quick traceroute says that the site is hosted on a machine in Norway, not London - try Visualroute to see.
Next, Netcraft say it's an NT 4 box.
AFAIK, this is a shared host - if you knock over the box then you'll take down a whole bunch of sites run by people who're totally innocent (not to mention all the innocent people who bank with this company who'll be affected by such an irresponsible attack).
Having checked IPs, my site doesn't seem to be hosted on the same box, but I know I'd be pretty pissed if my visitors couldn't get to my site because someone had decided, with pretty tenuous reasons, to hAx0R the host machine. If you (understandably) feel a need to take action, please try to do it in a more productive manner.

Since when is second best the "market leader"?Microsoft's position as market leader makes them a prime target
If they are the market leader, how come there are more than twice as many Apache servers as there are IIS servers out there?
Cheers

The myth of regular patches
If a piece of software requires regular patches for serious security problems, that's probably a sign that its basic approach to security is flawed.
But does IIS really need patches as frequently as you imply? Code Red, Code Blue, Nimda et al exploit the same security hole that is almost a year old. The problem is that for every security hole, there are several waves of worms because IIS admins simply never patch their boxes.
If you disbelieve me check out Netcraft's security survey which shows how long several IIS boxes have gone unpatched and that about 12% of SSL sites (meaning they are probably eCommerce related) running IIS have been "rooted". -
IIS on BSD/OS?
WTF?
P.S.:
Your comment violated the postercomment compression filter. Comment aborted.
What horseshit.... -
Ebay is Microsofts slaveThe frontend of www.ebay.com is a cluster of servers running Microsoft WindowsNT (see netcraft).
You know, the server-licenses for all those boxes may cost a lot of money, unless you have a good contract with Microsoft... ...and Microsoft will not renew this good contract, when you don't agree to its dictat!Maybe its time for Ebay to switch to Linux (as Amazon, Altavista and others did) to be finally free.
BTW: in Italy like in Germany (and maybe all EU) it is perfectly legal to resell software - I did it several times.
Just my 2c.
