This one's nice
Grab a recent mozilla build, open this xpi in it to install java support, and have fun.
SSL support, should you want it, is also installable from the "Install PSM" selection under the Debug drop-down menu.

Sad.
It's kind of sad to go to Netscape's home page and see that a news story about the Florida election battles has better page placement than an announcement about a major new version of their flagship product. Well, that is, if they still consider Communicator to be their flagship product.

Netscape 6.0 Officially Released
Now it's official. Netscape.com has an announcement of the final release of 6.0. It's now available through their download page.
According to a news.com article , Netscape 6 will also be mass distributed AOL-style on CDs included in numerous magazines owned by Time-Warner.
ZDNet's story on the release refers to Flanagan's petition to postpone the release until standards compliance bugs were fixed.
cnet has already posted a review.

W3 compliance of most websites?
I am viewing
/. on Amaya right now and I must say that it looks awful compared to its usual Netscape apperance. I checked a bunch of other sites (most notably altavista and netscape which look absolutely abysmal, and slashdot and Yahoo!, which looks quite poorly coded). Even the w3c's website looks a little different. I think webmasters who are a little to liberal in their coding practices need to re-evaluate the ease of producing nice, clean HTML. Of course, I am a guilty party as well, but this seems to be a serious and widespread problem.

It doesn't appear to be out.As someone else said, the directory structure is there (actually, just a link is there, but no directory), but there is no page or file. If you go to Netscape's pages (either here or here), it would appear that preview release 3 is the latest 6.0 product available.
This stuff should really be checked out before it's posted. It seems kind of lazy to make your readers correct this stuff for you.

Netscape 6
I've been debating whether or not to post.
I will, with this disclaimer. I work for Netscape, but not in product development.
It's true that standards in PR3 are broken - CSS doesn't display correctly, or at all, for example. However, I believe this is temporary, and that standards compliance is a big issue with Netscape in general. Evidence of that is here, although it may seem like propaganda-speak.
I've also had the privilege of trying out some of the internal nightly builds, and they have come a long way. There's still a ways to go, but keep in mind, Netscape 6 is still in the pre-release stage. Out of respect for my employer, I'm trying not to divulge too much information, so please understand why this post is a little detail-thin. :)

3 Arrested In PlayStation 2 Robbery !?
3 Arrested In PlayStation 2 Robbery
Police from Montgomery County and the City of Rockville have arrested three young people suspected of wrestling away a new Sony PlayStation 2 from a 15-year-old. The computer game was released for sale just yesterday. Police say two 18-year-old men from Silver Spring and a 20-year-old Derwood woman were charged with robbery in the incident at the Best Buy store on Shady Grove Road in Rockville. One suspect is accused of pushing the youth to the ground, while a second grabbed the victim's backpack. Police later found two suspects near Shady Grove Road and I-270. They located the third suspect with the backpack and the game near the store. -
Folks, this is standard for the industry...
When you buy software, you are actually purchasing a license to use to the software, and vendors routinely insert clauses in their license agreements that help them meet their goals in the marketplace.
For example, Netscape prohibits publishing benchmarks in the license agreement for its Client software. The games developer Apogee (a.k.a. 3DRealms) even added a clause to its license agreement earlier this year that prevented negative reviews of its product! So Microsoft is really not acting unusually harsh in this regard. -
Re:Editor's viewpointI'm also an ODP editor, and have been since nearly the beginning of the project in mid-1998. (My editor profile is readily available - if the server is down there's a less-detailed copy elsewhere.)
I agree with beebware that this will be resolved internally. The Open Directory Project prides itself on being a complete directory - I'm confident that useful listings (such as those about suicide, etc.) won't be lost when illegal sites are removed.
Remember, it's "sites with unlawful content" we're looking at here - unlawful content. As far as I know (and I am not a lawyer), it's perfectly legal to talk about suicide - actually committing suicide is illegal, but you can talk about it all you like. Sites containing child pornography are illegal because the pornography itself is what's illegal. (Of course, this is the way I see it - it's up to the lawyers to decide what actually happens. And I'll keep editing after they do.)
And an important note on the subject of this article: Dmoz is not "aka AOL" at all. It is owned by AOL/Time-Warner, but it's a separate project. Remember that ICQ has also been owned by AOL since June 8, 1998, and even Mozilla - related to Netscape - belongs to AOL. Just because a project is owned by AOL doesn't mean it's "aka AOL" - you got that part all wrong.

Corporations SHOULD pay taxes. Here's why...I agree with one fact: Corporations are not people.
This certainly does not mean that corporations should be exempt from tax--even if the individuals who own the corporation are taxed for money made from owning stock. Here's why:
* Corporations draw on public infrastructure. Are you going to argue that a company's usage of public resource is only as great as the sum of its stockholders? That is lunacy. Corporations use natural and public resource as an entity in and of themselves; therefore they need to compensate the public accordingly.
* In a time when corporate profits are at an all time high, and labor is payed the lowest (in real dollars) amount since the 1970's. 1/3 of the United States's labor force makes less than 10 dollars per hour, and many of those make right at the minimum wage.
Do you propose that these people should pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes than the 2nd and 4th most valuable corporations in the United States? It doesn't sound so good when you look at it that way does it?
* Finally, I do have another major beef with corporations. This is it: they are not a person; they have limited liability; they are not citizens, and yet they seem to have much more pull in government than ordinary citizens.
I think that the least corporations can do is pay their fair share.
I also think that the tax structure needs to be reset to be a true progressive tax. As it is a disproportionate burden falls on those least able to pay.
I would say that it's just mush-headed libertarianism to say that corporations should not pay taxes, but that might be misconstrued as flame-bait :-)
Check out Ralph Nader if corporate interests seem a little too strong. VoteNader.org.

Falcon4.0, mods and source
MicroProse was one of the most highly regarded computer companies in the Flight Simulator market. they made computer games that were used by the military because of their realistic physics model and complexity. F15 and F16 simulators were their main thing...
Falcon4 was microprose's last big project. it was a HUGE undertaking and very well might be the most sophisticated computer game (certainly the most complex flight sim) ever made. Beautiful AI, war engine and VERY realistic radar and physics make it incredibly ambitious. the source code, of course, was heavily guarded.
The game was well recieved, but the major criticism was that there were some bugs and some other little problems that made it hard for the super observant flight sim users to use properly. Some AI bugs, some missles fired outside their parameters, etc. little things, but important things. It took months for patches to come out and when they did, they weren't great. here was a KICK ASS game that simply didn't reach it's full potential because it was in a dying company. It had a strong fan base that couldn't do more than wait and do a few Hex edits to make it all better.
BUT when microprose was bought by hasbro and hasbro dumped the flight sim division, an angry programmer posted the entire f4 source code WITH the patches online.
what it's done that's great was spawn a whole series of really good 3rd party (OS) patches for this incredible game. Real open source gaming? not on purpose, but the effect is wonderful.
it's an interesting kind of Open Source development. it didn't happen on purpose, but it proves something: you can have a successful commercial product that's open source. quite frankly, compiling such a huge thing (about 600 megs) is too big except for the REALLY advanced users and most people would buy the binary anyhow. but it makes things like patches and addons happen much faster. I waited 3 months for the first patch to come out of the dying MicroProse website, as opposed to 1 week for the latest patch to come from 3rd party people. You still have to buy the game, but all of the latest great stuff is added on because of the "open source" nature of the program.
I wonder if this could be used to help promote open sourcing of games and large, killer apps. Clearly open sourcing hasn't hurt falcon4..in fact, it's increased the fan base. the hardcore game site, combatsim.com gave falcon4 an initial review that was decent, but after the open source patches came out, they said it was like playing a masterpiece. hm.
an explanation of what happened HERE and HERE.
an explaination of hex editing and source editing http HERE
i wonder if this might be the next big push in software...companies working with mod/patch developers..it seems to work well with games whether intentionally or not...

Re:Apply This Rule.As explained at Netscape, These attachments contain only formatting and are not important to the message itself. . Basically, formatted separated from content. I personally think this is a good idea for these reasons:
- Sections of the text can be extracted without missing an opening or closing tag. In HTML (and other embedded markup languages), excerpts require careful examination of enclosing tags to make sure the tags are closed and opened at the correct locations.
- Formatting is separated from content. If you don't want to see the formatting, you don't have to. This can also be useful for source code.. maybe you want each comment in your program to appear in italics. The source code itself can be extracted and run without the formatting.
- There are other pros, too. I believe the Project Xanadu lists them somewhere.
-
What are TNEF attachments?Netscape has the answer, for those that don't know:
Those attachments contain Microsoft Exchange's rich text information, encoding attributes of the message such as boldface, underlining, fonts, and colors. Exchange/Internet Mail puts these attributes into an attachment so that they can appear to other Exchange users on the Internet. The problem arises when people not using Exchange receive these attachments: instead of seeing a formatted message, they see a big chunk of UUENCODE data named WINMAIL.DAT, or a section application/ms-tnef if you're using MIME (which is what Communicator uses). These attachments contain only formatting and are not important to the message itself.
For communicating with users of other clients, Exchange contains an option to suppress sending rich text information when mailing them. You may want to contact the person who sends these attachments, and ask them to turn these off for messages sent to you. To do this, they need to double-click on your address and uncheck the box labelled "Send to this recipient in Microsoft rich text format."

Re:Let's get a real dose of reality. The real missed opportunity was the chance to release a standards-compliant web browser and secure the loyalty of web developers. But after a two year delay, developers have become more comfortable with IE 5, which while not perfect in the standards department, offers far more standards support than Netscape 4.5.

Re:Um, aren't we a little hasty?Yeah, gotta agree with that. NS makes no attempt to hide the fact that they think you are a cow. At least in IE you can disable all these "features", in NS you're stuck with THAT GODDAMNED FUCKING *SHOP* BUTTON!!! Excuse me, I just really don't like that button. Even worse than having it at all is that they put Shop right next to Stop. This really bothers me since I generally use text only buttons in NS. I'd rather use the icons, but they're stuck at size FUCKING HUGE! Well that's enough of my ranting for today.
Pretty please, pretty please, can I have a good browser for Linux???
... so TURN THE (Shop, Radio) BUTTONS OFF!
From the Version Notes at http://home.net scape.com/eng/mozilla/4.7/relnotes/windows-4.75.ht ml:
You can disable the Shop@Netscape button and Netscape Radio feature by editing the prefs.js file (preferences.js on Unix).
To disable the Shop@Netscape button, open the prefs.js file and add the following statement: user_pref("browser.chrome.disableMyShopping", true);
To disable the Netscape Radio plugin, open the prefs.js file and add the following statement: user_pref("browser.chrome.disableNetscapeRadio", true);
No comment on the buttons, they look fine to me at 1152x864 resolution.

Mine seem to go to Netscape
I normally don't use the default book marks, but just for fun, I decided to look to see if mine did too. I have a folder called "Impored Bookmarks" that contains a whole bunch of netscape bookmarks (presumably from when I did run Netscape on my machine). Anyway, ALL of those links go to netscape.com. Things like Amazon: http://home.netscape.com/bookmar k/4_06/amazon.html and AltaVista: http://home.netscape.com/book mark/4_06/altavista.html
This clearly isn't an IE thing. Microsoft may have even innovated this idea away from Netscape!
Interestingly enough, these web addresses don't even take you to the real site (like I presume the IE ones do). Instead, then keep you at netscape.com with their banner ads.

Um, aren't we a little hasty?
Netscape is doing the same, and it's not exactly new either: this feature is there since version 4.0 (1998?). The default bookmarks in the Personal Toolbar Folder redirect through Netscape's site.
The redirection URL is http://home.netscape.com/bookmark/(version)/(bookm arkname).html
Take a look at http://home.netscape.com/bookmark/ to see all supported versions.

Go to the Netscape homepage; I can't go, don't want anything Netscape tainting my machine. Count up how many banner ads there are on the main page and all the headline pages. Each ad is worth a cool half-million dollars for Netscape's team of coders. The little window that pops up is worth $3 million to them.

RIAA besiegedcribbed from my posting on Boufdot
With more and more artists coming out not necessarily for Napster but decidedly against the RIAA and with the RIAA claiming in court that they are protecting the artists of the labels, one can see there is a fallacy in their argument. RIAA is realizing it is lacking allies in their widespread attacks. I kind of hope what we are seeing are death spasms, but I know that isn't the case.
Right now, the RIAA needs to be able to present a unified front of artists, even though it represents the record labels. But their lawyers know that in general the best way to get sympathy is by having the artist claim to be hurt. The one thing that seems to be genuinely true through this whole mess is each side wants to see the artist succeed. Well, then let's cut out the middleman, the record label, and let the artist do the business end. The artist can hire a marketing firm and such to get themselves known.
I believe it would reshape the industry, create more jobs, and strengthen the role of the artist in our society. It might also cure cancer, but I can't be sure of that.
Maybe, if anything good does come out of the Napster debacle, it will be the record labels and the artists come to some core agreements on compensation.
What I would really like to see is all the recording artists go on strike. But that isn't going to happen, too many artists seek fame and the joy of making the music over money.

This has been out for a while
A few months ago, Maximum Linux magazine had an issue mostly about browsers. It included a CD with every browser you could imagine from Netscape Communicator to Microsoft Internet Explorer (which they claimed would run if you could get WINE to run it). As I recall, the CD also included (probably an earlier version) of the AIM Beta for Linux. I don't think I installed it, but I'm almost sure it was there! I think this has been around a while, but AOL didn't publicize it until now.
