Well, the NHL has Toronto, Ottawa, and Detroit in the "Atlantic Division". https://www.nhl.com/standings/... Mind you, the Great Lakes and the St Lawrence river do drain into the Atlantic Ocean.

Wobegon woes
There are a dozen things that reduce or eliminate congestion and make driving more efficient and safe that almost no one does.
I agreed with everything else you said, except for that one observation.
How can you tell that no one else is doing these things? Smart driving tends to look unexceptional, in the same way that elite goal tenders often make the game look easy.
Does perhaps your claim boils down to this: there are more idiots on the road than obvious, distinctive geniuses like Dominik Hasek?
"He tends goal the way Kramer enters Seinfeld's apartment, a package of flailing arms and wild gesticulations that somehow has a perfect logic." That's how Sports Illustrated's Michael Farber described him, name-checking two popular 1990s TV sitcom characters. In an era when goalies gravitated toward the "butterfly" style — a structured and systematic approach to their position — Hasek got superior results by appearing to be largely improvisational, to the point of having no style at all.
I often regulate my breaking according to the sum of my following distance plus the following distance of the car behind me.
I doubt that one other driver in 100 has even the vaguest perception that I'm attuned to the space around me in all pertinent directions.
I even find this hard to detect in others, and I often look for the most subtle clues. Sometimes I comment to my wife "the driver of that car in the left lane used to drive a motorcycle". Motorcycle drivers—surviving sample—tend to view the entire width of their lane as a resource to be exploited at all times. In a vehicle, that gets compressed down to about one foot of lateral freedom, according to traffic conditions near by (more than a foot starts to alarm people about your lane management).
The number one rule of truly proficient driving: never give the other drivers around you an excuse to think about one thing more than they already failing to fully internalize, unless that one thing is the only thing you want that driver to attend to (in packed conditions, one almost never wants to have this effect on another driver, but it can be quite useful—wielded judiciously—in lesser congestion).
There's a huge correlation between skill and stealth, hence the Wobegon woes.
Illusory superiority itself is full of shit, because different people have different standards of competence. Some people value being polite, others value defensive driving, still others value weaving and wending to leave the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune in their rear-view mirror (which is generally covered in black tape).
Surprisingly (not!) we all think we're above average in the attributes we most value.

Re:The Astros used the same passwords???
I live in St. Louis but don't pay attention to sports much.
You must be new here. Give it time. In a few years, you'll be able to tell the seasons by the color of your blood. Red from April to October, blue from October to May (and hopefully June someday). Any overlap will cause a sickly shade of purple, as if your cardiovascular system had been retrofitted to circulate grape soda through your veins.
And, yes, we've all pretty much written off the Rams. Any NFL team that wants to stay in St. Louis is going to need to have a non-jackass owner. This fact leads me to believe that St. Louis isn't a long-term football town. The last good football team owner died of old age, then there was a stream of disinterested twits, and now we have this Walmart douchebag. Trust me, Arsenal fans, St. Louis feels your pain.

Re:Online Sports Network

Re:can someone please explain to me
I want to watch my local NHL team, the Vancouver Canucks, online through the NHL's own streaming service, NHL GameCenter, as I don't have cable. I am perfectly willing and able to pay the approximately $20 per month to do this. I want to pay the NHL to consume their content.
However, the NHL has imposed geo-IP lockouts for local games, meaning I can't watch my local team play on the service I'm paying for. There's two ways around this - use a VPN/proxy (which is expressly forbidden in the GC ToC) or watch an illegal stream.

That's Not Really Fair
and with the millions of dollars they are paid, how many of them donated to research?
What? I don't understand why I need to pay for research when my employer endangers me. Example:
and with the millions of dollars coal miners were paid, how many of them donated to research? Coal mining is modern day pyramid building, they are paid to sacrifice their bodies so the industrial revolution can push us forward, not to be coddled. this is a job hazard and you have have to accept that, if it wasn't you wouldn't be paid as much.
There are over one thousand lawsuits by former football players against the league. This was covered by NPR a while ago, and it sounds like players are saying "I got hit here, in this game. I had X symptoms. Coach told me I didn't need to see the medical professional because he needed me back in the game. I now experience Y long term ailments." Regardless of the amount they are each paid, this could be compared to mesothelioma from asbestos exposure while installing installation. The NFL has deep pockets, let these players have their day in court.
Check out Shanahan's suspensions of NHL players. I will tell you right now that this is the NHL attempting to wash their own hands of similar liabilities. Three hockey players killed themselves very recently.
Look, in Roman times, people used to die building the aqueducts ... that doesn't mean we accept deaths when companies build dams to service communities. We have technology, engineering, medicine, etc to help us be better than that. We're better than we were thousands of years ago. We don't need the gladiators to die anymore. The NFL is making bank off these players -- even after the players themselves are all millionaires that squander their money within a few years of the end of their career. The courts will decide what liability the NFL must assume. -

BlackoutFrom this page, it appears most games are tape delayed by roughly 50 hours, between the start of the game and 48 hours after its end:
A game may not be available to watch live or within 48 hours of completion if it meets any of the below criteria:
- Your local team is playing and televising the game on a local over-the-air station and you are located within that station's signal.
- Your local team is playing and televising the game on a local regional sports network and your cable or satellite system falls within the distribution for that local regional sports network (regardless of whether your cable or satellite system actually carries that regional sports network.)
- Your local team is playing and there is no local television coverage of the game
- The game is being televised nationally - In the U.S., this includes NBC, Versus, and the NHL Network. In Canada, this includes CBC, TSN, and the NHL Network.

Re:Licensing Fees
" Do you have any tips for stopping cable for people who live with fans of cable news or cable sports?"
Yes: kill them. Tell them all they need is /. If they don't understand get new fans, they're not worth having around anyway.
Only news I get is online (/.) or Colbert. Seriously news is waaay overrated. Haven't watched the local news in 4 years and I don't feel worse for wear.
But if someone must have sports *shutters* then there's NFL Game Rewind with every NFL game in HD, NHL GameCenter Live for live NHL games and MLB. There's also ESPN, ESPN3, Fox Soccer... just google it, and they all work with PlayON which is compatible with PS3 and Xbox360. -
Re:Cheaper and better than cable
If it wasn't for sports, I'd consider canceling cable/sattelite and just watching content via the internet.

Re:Survival of the fittest
Yes, people get very attached to their hobbies. I personally find it shocking the number of people who spend half the year watching other people chase a black rubber disk around.
I don't understand the thrill, but that doesn't matter. Similarly it doesn't matter that anyone thinks I wasted my evening yesterday melting people's faces in AV. Nobody really got hurt and I enjoyed it and that's all that matters.

Re:Survival of the fittest
You won't find the meaning of life at level 80.
Neither will most people find the meaning of life down at the local bar. WoW players are doing what everyone else is doing on this ride: trying to fill in the time before they die with something they enjoy doing. Unfortunately for them their choice simply isn't "socially acceptable" and hence they are subjected to ridicule based on how they want to spend their free time.

Of course the Blue Team loses, as evidence I submit the history of the Detroit Lions.
And I suppose the Detroit Red Wings only support the theory as well? -

Re:No Problem
I loved NHL 2000. In my opinion, the title achieved perfection that year. Since then, each year has introduced a new gimmick and taken away something that I liked about the previous year.
Much like the National Hockey League itself!
How much did you play for NHL 2005 (lockout edition)?
The NHL itself pimps the fact that EA implements the new post-lockout rules. That must be worth something. -
And on the other end of the spectrum...
At least you have some entities getting out ahead of this and cooperating with YouTube/Google Video to get their content out there, like the NHL. They're including current games, as well as selected "classics" from previous ones. They're even interested in incorporating user-generated content into the mix...

Re:Sirius has NPR and NFL: worth the extra dough.
Sirius will be carrying all regular- and post-season NFL games next season. They also carry many NHL and NBA games.
The downside to the current NBA and NHL coverage is that you only get one team's radio broadcast, unlike NHL's on-line broadcast where you can choose which broadcast you want (and if you'd like the French broadcast for Montreal or Ottawa) -

Re:"Most powerful computer in Canada"
As an American living in Canada, I find it very surprising to see the pent up anger that a several Canadians seem to have for Americans. This post seems to bring out that sentiment that I see on a daily basis. Most Americans are ignorant to the anti-American sentiment that exudes from the Canadian media and the general population.
The crack made that fired this guy off isn't exactly what I call Canada bashing. It's our brand of humor we like to call sarcasm.
Why is it that a faction of the population seems to dislike the US so much?
Americans don't create beer commercials that express an annoyance or hatred for Canadians. (Molson) We don't produce shows that attempt to depict the American population as ignorant fools. (Talking to Americans)
Most Americans love Canadian culture. We love Canadian sports. We love Canadian comedians and entertainers. I don't know why there seems to be a hatred that isn't reciprocated.
Having seen both sides of the coin, I'd have to say that America bashing is far more prevalent and mainstream here in Canada. (Per capita of course) -

Re:I wish alternative energy would get more publicScientists are actively seeking an organism that can feed on radiation. There has to be one out there.
The thing about finding organisms that feed on radiation would be that the organism would either have to be able to change the radioactive material into a different isotope as a part of its metabolism, or it would have to sequester the material within its body long enough to have the material naturally change itself.

Re:I wish alternative energy would get more publicYou know, the only way this plan could be viable was if they:
- found a relatively airtight cavern
- that is small enough for a significant volume of air to be compressed into
- that was structurally sound for the purpose, and
- that nobody planned on building above.
Personally, I'm a much bigger fan of hydroelectricity than the proposed method in the article. Granted, you'll be displacing wildlife (including people) whenever you build dams, but for the electricity you generate, it's probably one of the cleanest methods available.
