Let's not forget the high quality reporting that you find on the local news stations too. I suppose that I cannot talk about other areas, but my local news sucks worse than any of the 24 hour services. They recently did - I'm not making this up - an in depth report titled "Do you need toothpaste" [spoiler]yes[/spoiler]

I absolutely hate the way their spots ads run. "Find out who Atlanta police are looking for at 11" As if this little tidbit of information is supposed to entice me any more than a simple "police are looking for a suspect in a robbery in midtown, more at 11". I've seen the guys on the scene doing live reports - I know it has to suck being out there in the winter. 9 times out of 10, I don't need him to be out there in the cold telling me what happened 5 hours ago - he can come inside.

The problem for all of this is that the people running the news agencies have become another entertainment industry, rather that what it should be, dissemination of information. I know that you win prizes for crap like the toothpaste piece - but I'd be better of learning about road closures, active court cases, or - gosh - operation updates of my local government. Hell, if you want to give me entertainment reports, tell me who is playing in my city.

How do you really make a good news show that uses the internet properly? Give me the headline, the executive summary, and a link to the full article. Then, maybe if you have time, cross-index it with commentary articles. Actually tag articles with an event so I can follow along with the different reports coming in that all relate the the same thing. It's not hard! The news agencies do it for their internal systems already!

I was in England the other day and I was watching the news there. It still sucked, but they did have a really nice segment called no commentary that shows raw video footage without voice over narration. It was awesome. Also they had news about these things called other countries - all commonwealth countries - but other countries nonetheless. They still had commentaries though, with American commentators no less. [sigh] If you need to fill time CNN, I'm sure that Al Jazeera, Hindustan News, etc (other foreign television news) would have plenty to fill the lineup.

Looking at America

It was not the first time in recent years we've felt this horror, this sorrowful sense of estrangement, not nearly. This sort of lawless behavior has become standard practice since Sept. 11, 2001.

The country and much of the world was rightly and profoundly frightened by the single-minded hatred and ingenuity displayed by this new enemy. But there is no excuse for how President Bush and his advisers panicked -- how they forgot that it is their responsibility to protect American lives and American ideals, that there really is no safety for Americans or their country when those ideals are sacrificed.

Out of panic and ideology, President Bush squandered America's position of moral and political leadership, swept aside international institutions and treaties, sullied America's global image, and trampled on the constitutional pillars that have supported our democracy through the most terrifying and challenging times. These policies have fed the world's anger and alienation and have not made any of us safer.

In the years since 9/11, we have seen American soldiers abuse, sexually humiliate, torment and murder prisoners in Afghanistan and Iraq. A few have been punished, but their leaders have never been called to account. We have seen mercenaries gun down Iraqi civilians with no fear of prosecution. We have seen the president, sworn to defend the Constitution, turn his powers on his own citizens, authorizing the intelligence agencies to spy on Americans, wiretapping phones and intercepting international e-mail messages without a warrant.

We have read accounts of how the government's top lawyers huddled in secret after the attacks in New York and Washington and plotted ways to circumvent the Geneva Conventions -- and both American and international law -- to hold anyone the president chose indefinitely without charges or judicial review.

Those same lawyers then twisted other laws beyond recognition to allow Mr. Bush to turn intelligence agents into torturers, to force doctors to abdicate their professional oaths and responsibilities to prepare prisoners for abuse, and then to monitor the torment to make sure it didn't go just a bit too far and actually kill them.

The White House used the fear of terrorism and the sense of national unity to ram laws through Congress that gave law-enforcement agencies far more power than they truly needed to respond to the threat -- and at the same time fulfilled the imperial fantasies of Vice President Dick Cheney and others determined to use the tragedy of 9/11 to arrogate as much power as they could.

Hundreds of men, swept up on the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq, were thrown into a prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, so that the White House could claim they were beyond the reach of American laws. Prisoners are held there with no hope of real justice, only the chance to face a kangaroo court where evidence and the names of their accusers are kept secret, and where they are not permitted to talk about the abuse they have suffered at the hands of American jailers.

In other foreign lands, the C.I.A. set up secret jails where "high-value detainees" were subjected to ever more barbaric acts, including simulated drowning. These crimes were videotaped, so that "experts" could watch them, and then the videotapes were destroyed, after consultation with the White House, in the hope that Americans would never know.

Adding more to the point. Here is what I have seen happen over and over again.

Young people come in and they contribute to a wave of innovation. Then, they build their career on the enhancement, support and promotion of their innovation. When the time comes for a new wave of innovation, they tend not to contribute to it but rather oppose it. New innovations that would obsolete their prior innovations are seen as a personal threat.

It actually takes quite a bit of courage to be a leader of wave after wave of innovation in the same field. One must be prepared to abandon one's own creation to clear the mind to conceive new ones. Anyhow, one has to be be emotionally prepared to let go with one hand before establishing a firm grip with the other hand. If the new innovation fails, then one is left with nothing, not the old nor the new. At least that's how it feels. Those fears are mostly emotional, not rational. In real life, the old innovation tends to fade away a lot slower than one fears.

So, not only do you have the right to remain silent, you actually have the right to sue the police if they coerce you into giving up that right -- and they still can't introduce what you say as evidence.

I agree with hherb on this issue. We are way to harsh on sex offenders. It seems that we can keep on passing new laws that find new ways to punish sex offenders. Are the current laws not strict enough? Other than murder, sexual assault convictions carried the longest median prison sentence in New Jersey. I think if someone suggested we add an extra 2 years onto minimum sentences for all sex offenders it would pass in any state. We have since 1980 consistently upped the penalties for sex crimes since the 1980s. There is no evidence that it has helped. Now states are considering the death penalty for worst case sex crimes. There is a guy in Louisiana who is on death row for a sex crime without murdering anyone.

But no matter how harsh the punishment, we can always make it a little worse. We could insist that sex criminals serve a minimum of 25 years. Then we could restrict their privileges in prison even if they were well behaved. We could ban them from having a television. We could ban them from lifting weights. We could stop them from wearing civilian clothes. We could lock them up for 23 hours a day like those on death row. But no matter how much we punish them the public desire for revenge is never satiated. We always want more. When do we finally say that some punishment is enough?

About 400 municipalities in New Jersey have enacted local zoning ordinances restricting where sex offenders can live within their boundaries. This vengeful justice is getting so out of hand that an ex sex offender cannot function in society. They can't get a job because firstly they have a criminal record and secondly they are a sex offender and have to register as such. They can't live in many places. We are forcing them into a life of crime to survive. Many towns like to ban sex offenders from living within 2,500 feet of any place where there might be children. This list gets very long. It starts with schools and parks. Then it moves on into movie theaters and churches. Now the vogue is to also ban them from 2500 feet of libraries and bus stops as well. There are increasingly states and counties where there is no place a sex offender can live legally.

As to the specifics of the internet ban for sex offenders. Firstly if they have already served their sentence haven't they already paid back their 'debt to society'. Or is this to keep society safe and not as a punishment. Well what if their original crime had nothing to do with the internet. What if they raped an adult and have no desire to do anything to kids? Is there any evidence that this would make kids safer? There is no evidence that residency restriction laws do in fact diminish crimes against children. And remember banning people from a using the internet is removing a distant threat from a kid. They can't physically do anything. And all this assumes that they will choose to use the internet to contact kids to begin with. What if they do not? What about other categories? If someone had underage sex, the law is the problem there as opposed to the law breaker.

So what type of person is this law about? Is it about a sex crazed pedophile who cannot help stop themselves. Well in my mind they don't have what we would call free will. the urge is so great. States are starting to use civil commitment with such offenders so they never get out. So what sort of sex offenders are we talking about?

The people in the article are lawyers, who are trying to help those accused by *AA of piracy. Even if you still think, the pirates themselves may be (unduly) labeled "terrorists", the lawyers defending them are perfectly safe from the accusation. The only time, a (real) terrorist's lawyer was herself convicted of crimes, was for very real help she provided her client in communicating with his followers "in the wild". The jury deliberated for 12 days and convicted her on all five counts.

Whatever your opinion of Lynne Stewart, no other lawyer has gotten into this sort of trouble. Even if Jack Valenti would like to portray pirates as terrorists (and I have not seen any evidence of this), insinuating, that the pirates' lawyers will be accused of "terrorism" is completely unfounded.

Sorta OT, but since you brought up steel tariffs... There was an article about how the new US tariffs on steel imports are hurting Chinese workers. It's from the perspective of the foreign companies and their employees. Personally, I don't like goods, drugs, and other products manufactured in China, but it's still a different perspective.

I would also think that Antigua could negotiate with steel manufacturers of other countries if it were to (hypothetically) increase tariffs. Sure, the US would probably retaliate, but it depends on how much they retaliate.

To describe what I mean in a more rational sense: The current cellphone corporation is trying to maximize ARPU. For those who aren't in the know ARPU stands for "Average Revenue Per User". All the cellphone corporations even go so far as to have entire HUGE conferences that focus ENTIRELY on ARPU (or what I refer to as "screwing over it's users as best as possible"). Once cellphones become generic TCP / IP traffic riding on some standardized physical layer... that is when we will see innovation. If you were wondering what Google is trying to do... they are trying to achieve some sort of all TCP / IP wireless schema. Tennis is also a "damned game," but fans of the sport know it can be a venue for people to do amazing, humbling things. I don't play Guitar Hero, so I wouldn't appreciate the performance in the Best Buy. I expect that as a GH fan, the author had the same experience that millions of tennis fans have had watching Roger dominate the men's tour for the last half-decade. Think about the last time you were wowed at a concert, or at an art museum. Think about touring one of Europe's beautiful cathedrals. There's a reason that they build them that big, and that beautiful. The architecture, and the art all around you, helps people find God. Tennis and Guitar Hero can be art too, and can have the same effect if you know what you're seeing.

Our testicles, for example, hang from our undersides dangerously exposed, just because some protein denatures at core body temperatures. Apparently something needs to be redesigned that can't be made to work better with slow incremental improvements. Evolution's fix: make them hurt like hell when struck so you learn not to mess with them. A Microsoft-style hack. If we threw a bunch of supercomputers at the problem we might come up with a completely different protein design that would allow reproduction with undescended testicles.

Which explains the survivability of so much hackish, clumsy, but real-working software. See, software, or life organisms persist to the degree that they solve real-world problems. How "elegant" the solution is is rather secondary. Often, real-world problems are ugly, pseudo-random nasty problems that don't have a clear, simple, ivory tower style solution. I maintain a large, complex, beautiful software codebase that has the ugliest, most horrible hack of a pile of regex and scripting as its very center. The nasty hacks have been amazingly stable for years now, and work well, even if they are a serious pain to edit during the (very rare) need to edit.

It's carefully sandboxed - the ugly part sits in a single file that is itself wrapped inside a handler function, so the "pretty" part of the codebase is *never* contaminated by the ugly, "written in a day or two" hack that got the whole shebang started.

Sometimes, no matter how much you kick and scream, you have several screens of ugly case statements littered with random function calls, and you end up with a great big ball of mud.
