Complete transcriptAh, a commenter on TFA points out the complete transcript nyud.net mirror of the call is available. A relevant quote:
[Stuff about the upfront-only plan] With this new pricing plan we will no longer be offering a lifetime service option.
To be clear, this new pricing for now will only be available for sales done through TiVo.com. We are exploring the possibility of launching similar types of programs into retail later in the year.
Then later in the Q&A portion:
Q: .. Secondly, will the pricing terms also be available when you roll out your dual tuner HD box later this year?
A: .. When it comes to, what we call our high def product later in the year, we have not yet set specific marketing or pricing arrangements for that yet. As we get closer to that timeframe we'll be looking to put that in place. This applies to our existing TiVo line of products that are in the market today.
So it sounds like lifetime for current models could possibly continue to be available at retail (though I can't say I've heard of a retail outlet offering a lifetime priced bundle), and the next gen HD is still yet to be determined. -

Pacman is excellent, a total clone of the arcade game, even down to the sounds and graphics. It runs pretty fast too, and is doesn't lock the CPU like flash tends to. The odd thing is that Excel VB macros can draw pixels with Cell.FillColor on my old laptop easily as fast as the optimised assembler routines could draw them on arcade machine.

Re:A Different Test ?? No kidding.
Dude. The fact is, news sites around the world are saying "Mac OS X system hacked by some guy on the net", when they should be saying something more like "Mac OS X user locally escalated priveleges using unpublished exploit".
It's a very well accepted fact that there's nearly no way to protect from local privelege escalation. It happens all the time, and new exploits are constantly found. The kind of access you need to use a machine to a reasonable extent (locally, at the console) means you'll always be able to find ways to escalate your priveleges.
"The original test was to see if a regular local user could elevate its privileges to admin."
Actually, the original "test" was something along the lines of "See if you can get into my machine and erase everything, over the network connection. Oh yeah here's an SSH login if you want." Read the FAQ. -

Re:Why keep SSH on?
Um, you are talking about OSX vs OSX Server. Which *Does* ship with these services enabled by default.
Which was also not what was compromised. Kind of nice for the GP to switch topics like that. :-/
I want to know more details about this incident.
The machine was a Mac Mini "running a default install of OS X Tiger, plus fink and some decent versions of Apache, MySQL and PHP. Software Update recently updated it to Mac OS X 10.4.5 and fixed some security issues." It's colored orange for some odd reason, and sits on a bookshelf sideways. He, "set up an LDAP server and linked it to the Macs naming and authentication services, to let people add their own account to this machine."
This is all available on his webpage.
Basically, the guy is a moron. He thinks he's proving something by making a Desktop configured machine do server-class work, and then expect it not to get rooted.
Was it a local privelage escalation flaw?
Yes. The exact hole has been withheld, but it probably doesn't matter anyway. In a contest of machine vs. hacker where the owner is doing nothing to stop the hacker (and in fact, inviting him by removing barriers!), my money is on the hacker.
Was it a remote flaw in SSH or Apache? Maybe an SSH password attack?
The guy gives out SSH accounts. There was no need to penetrate this layer of security, because he left the door wide open. -

Re:Lord, save us from morons
BTW, in case I wasn't clear enough above, his automated webpage to create SSH accounts is here. That will allow you to remotely login to his machine within minutes of entering your information. (Assuming he hasn't disabled it by now.)
The guy should feel thankful that the hacker (gwerdna) was nice enough to only deface his site rather than actually "rm -rf /" his box. (Which was what this guy was asking people to do, "if they can".) :-/ -
Re:Why keep SSH on?
The problem wasn't even that he had SSH running. It was that he was giving out accounts! I don't know what this guy was trying to prove, but his blind faith in Apple got him burned.
Somewhere inside of Apple, engineers are shaking their heads at this guy and the damage he's done to the Mac's reputation. -

B igDog_Feb-26-2006.wmv Put through the Coral CDN, just in case.
The robot looks fairly hilarious when it walks, since it moves a lot like two biped robots (imitating the motion of human legs) facing each other. The whining mechanical noise is also pretty funny, since it sounds like a mechanical goat. However, it does withstand the kick pretty impressively. -

Paul GrahamIf you don't know, there are some amazing talks given by Paul Graham that can be downloaded on the net. I will paste the links below, but all of these are copied from my lens on start ups (see my sig), where there is a good mix of free start up goodness and amazon link referral whoring (because the only thing worse than tricking Americans into reading is tricking Americans into reading while raising money for charity).
Ideas for Start ups -- An entertaining talk by Paul Graham on how entrepreneurs get ideas for start ups.
Hackers and Painters -- Another entertaining and informative talk by Paul Graham. Unlike architects (who figure out what to build) and engineers (who figure out how), great hackers and painters do both. Who makes a good hacker and how can you identify a good hacker/programmer in a job interview? Why is empathy an important skill for programmers? As a hacker who also studied painting in Europe, Paul may be uniquely qualified to write a book entitled Hackers and Painters. If you leave your day programming job only to get home and write more code, this is a great book for you.
What business can learn from open source -- Paul Graham, popular author and Lisp programmer, discusses what business can learn from open source. According to him, it's not about Linux or Firefox, but the forces that produced them. He delves into the reasons why open source is able to produce better software, why traditional workplaces are actually harmful to productivity and the reason why professionalism is overrated.

MP3 Players come in all shapes and sizes, that's why our editors decided to compile a list of the "Top 10 Strangest MP3 Players" for your enjoyment.
10. Teddy Bear MP3 Player
This makes our list because...well...it's a teddy bear shaped MP3 player! The keys look almost too tiny to press and it only comes with 128MB built-in memory.
9. Clip Type MP3 Player
For the person who easily loses things, this clip type MP3 player is for you. Measuring 25.6 x 53.2 x 22.6mm and weighing just 20g, it can be clipped just about anywhere.
8. $5 Cereal Box MP3 Player
Coming soon to a vending machine near you. These $5 MP3 players are shaped like mini cereal boxes and play all your favorite MP3 and WMA tracks. At this price, don't expect it to hold more than a few songs.
[TechDigest]
7. Magic Mirror MP3 Player
Shenzhen Xindaxin Technology Co. Ltd. claims that the "screen can be used as a mirror". Other perks include, MP3 playback/recording, FM tuner, and synchronized lyrics.
[StrangeNewProducts]
6. Scented MP3 Players

[AkihabaraNews]
5. Brain Wave MP3 Player

[I4U]
4.Minty MP3
This is actually an MP3 player you can build yourself. Minty claims that half of the parts can be sampled for free, meaning you'll only end up spending around $50 along with countless hours of brain wracking.
[Minty]
3. NES Controller MP3 Player
Martin Kersch of Germany made great use of a boring Saturday afternoon by transforming an ordinary USB Stick and NES Controller into a fully functional battery powered MP3 Player.
[FutureNews]
2. MP3 Toilet
Technically, it's not a stand alone MP3 player, but rather one that works with your toilet. This SD memory based player attaches to the wall above your toilet and includes a special receiver that goes under the toilet seat, how sanitary.
[Akihabara]
1. PEZ MP3 Player
At first glance, it looks like any other PEZ dispenser, but upon furthur inspection, you'll find a 3.5mm stereo mini jack and music keys. It packs an ample 512MB memory and weighs just 0.78 ounces. -

Oral sex et al-Do you know if you're a criminal? This particular police chief should be repremanded for these statements and issue a public apology for assuming that everyone is guilty before innocent.
The problem I have with the whole "if you have nothing to hide..." argument is that it can be really hard to even know when/if you are doing something illegal! For a variety of reasons:
People have a hard time separating their personal judgement from what is law
A prime example is our history of sodomy law. All it takes is one deeply religious person in power who is unable or unwilling to separate church from state before you have a problem.
From the current Florida lawbooks:798.01 Living in open adultery.--Whoever lives in an open state of adultery shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083. Where either of the parties living in an open state of adultery is married, both parties so living shall be deemed to be guilty of the offense provided for in this section.
Are you living in Florida with your unmarried girlfriend or boyfriend right now? (Oh wait, this is Slashdot
798.02 Lewd and lascivious behavior.--If any man and woman, not being married to each other, lewdly and lasciviously associate and cohabit together, or if any man or woman, married or unmarried, engages in open and gross lewdness and lascivious behavior, they shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083. :) You're breaking the law, and I doubt you're alone.
People misinterpret things, especially when they don't understand
What happens when big brother misinterprets your repeated login attempts because you forgot your password as attempted illegal entry into a computer system?
Or how about when you open your e-mailbox and receive those "hot teens!" spam and you're mistaken for a pedophile because you "downloaded child porn" thanks to the attached jpeg?
There are plenty of silly, stupid and broad laws on the books
I won't even bother to comprehend how many silly, stupid and broad laws there are. Check out some of your state's dumb laws (DumbLaws.com coral cached) and discover your true criminal identity.
And lets not forget about the growing issue of computer crimes created by politicians who have been bought or simply don't understand. If the RIAA/MPAA gets its way, it'll soon be illegal to put a DVD in your computer or record your favorite movie aired on TV to watch later.
... anyway ...
My point is that you are mistaken to think that you have nothing to worry about if you've supposedly done nothing wrong.
First, everyone in this country has probably broken or will eventually break a law or two unknowingly or willingly. And secondly, history has proven that whoever has the power to monitor the people will undoubtably abuse that power according to their beliefs and to their advantage -- whether it's in public locations or in the privacy of your own home. -
Re: It uses ACPII realize that EFI can replace ACPI, but it looks like they just took the easy route.
I'm looking at the dmesg listing, and it runs through EFI first...
But then it identifies and runs through the standard ACPI listing. Processors identified, power states, the works.
Not to say you aren't right about needing to throttle the processor, but Apple made it a little easier by using ACPI instead of reinventing the wheel...

Mactel-Linux is the effort to adapt the GNU/Linux operating system to Intel-based Apple Macintosh hardware.
This requires changes/additions to at least the following projects:
- the elilo bootloader
- the Linux kernel
- several drivers
This site is not about Linux distributions for Intel-Macs, but about developer communication.
Status
Using elilo and a modified Linux kernel, we can boot from a USB hard disk on the 17" iMac Core Duo. We are using the hacked vesafb driver to inherit the bootloader's framebuffer, keyboard and a USB network card work. Gentoo runs and can compile the Linux kernel with a compiler that runs on linux, which was compiled in linux, on a mac running the new intel duo processors.

FAQ
Can I already run Linux on the iMac Core-Duo?
Not quite. The kernel boots, and you can interact with the system on the command line, but that's as much as you can do with it at the moment. If you're a developer, though, that's a starting point.
[edit]
Why Linux? OS X is so great!Sure OS X is great. But this is fun.
[edit]
Why Linux? Why not Windows?Windows isn't fun.
[edit]
Why not OS X on non-Apple PCs?That's way uncool.
[edit]
The Intel-based Macs are standard PCs, aren't they? They share many characteristics with PCs, yes. Though, their firmware is EFI, not the old 1982 PC-BIOS.
