Re:first post
I'm 25 years old and I would be hard pressed to find anyone I know that has even seen it let a lone someone that would be excited for a sequel
To be honest, you are has nothing to do with it here. I'm 25 myself and will probably have to drag my wife kicking and screaming when it comes out (don't worry, she'll be ok, her dad's a geek too!). I remember the first time I saw the original, and remember watching it repeatedly after that for a while.
Besides, Gabe and Tycho are just into their thirties, and we know how they feel about tron. http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2005/11/14/ -
John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19/
Yes, some people are mean on the internet, that's what IP-bans are for. No, you can't talk them into being nice, you slap an IP-ban on them, delete their posts, and forget about them.

Re:I think the gaming industry is slightly wrong
Well if that is the case then why is it always a huge concern people try to ensure that kids don't play M rated games?
Because it's not your goddamn business.
If so many adults play games why is xbox live filled with so many teenage tards calling me a faggot?
Penny Arcade answered that one a long time ago.
I think it the law should be very strict about the sales of games to kids and should punish irresponsible parents for allowing their kids to play lots of games they shouldn't play.
If you decide your child shouldn't be playing Roller Coaster Tycoon, that's your right as a parent. If you buy GTA4 for your child, that's your right too. But you have NO business making morality judgments for anyone else.
In reality this won't happen and I do believe the gaming industry, like most industries love to prey on kids because quite frankly kids are dumb and it's easier to get kids to part with their money.
Advertisers aim at children because they might get their parents to buy stuff. Shocking news at 11. As for me, I'm waiting for the moralizers to be right about something. They whined about rock music, they whined about comic books, they whined about metal and rap, they whined about Dungeons and Dragons, and now they whine about video games. And they've been wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong.

Re:Shot in the arm for PAX?PAX attendance has grown at an astronomical rate since its inception, and last year the jackholes behind 'E for Everyone' tried to use its popularity to boost their own, and hilariously failed.
PAX doesn't need a shot in the arm, it just needs its directors to stick to the format they've established. Oh, and reports of hilariously misguided coattail riders.

Penny Arcade called this out many years ago, but I'll be damned if I can find the strip. It is kind of amusing to think on it, though. Any PA nuts out there that can find this please?

Re:How is this difficult?
I realise that a relatively large proportion are employed in the IT field, but that does not automatically make them professional/business users. Particularly it depends on the hardware concerned. If a sysadmin makes a decision on buying a new server for work, that certainly makes him a business/professional customer. If later that day he goes home and orders some hardware for a new HTPC / gaming rig he is, in that context, considered a private home-user.
Whether and when he hangs ot on Slashdot is completely irrelevant. Are you really trying to say that if you make purchasing decisions for a business, that you shouldnt use your power of decision making for private purposes? LOL Really?
No, I was referring to the hardware. If you have decision-making powers over an IT-budget at work, you shouldn't be taking private factors into consideration. I was thinkin more this guy.
And BTW, even if you do pay for it yourself, it often isn't perfectly legal to channel your purchase through your company's IT budget, as there are probably a lot of tax deducted rebates along the line which you don't fulfill.

Who will replace him?
Penny Arcade made a very good point a few years ago, when Thompson was threatening them:
We are actually fortunate that the current actor is so impotent in his role. Imagine what might happen if some charming, efficacious attorney took his place. The more I consider it the more I think we may be lucky to have Jack playing the part of the alarmist. The alternative might be someone who is actually capable.
Now that it is even more obvious that Thompson is a nutcase, who is going to take his place? Someone competent in that role? That is a scary thought.

Re:Anonymity hurts us all.
To summarize: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2004/03/19/
-
Re:RTFP
How does demanding all of that information follow from what I said? My points are: 1.) that anonymity is used to avoid accountability and 2.) that a society in which anonymity is frequent is one in which people will lie about important parts of their lives in ways that make it harder for all of us and that strengthen McCarthyite tactics. Was the bolding too subtle for you last time? Do I need to make the type flash and surround it with arrows? How do my disclosing my height and weight or any of those other things relate to either of those points?
I never denied that there is a place for anonymity. Quite the contrary. But from what I can see, it is used as a crutch by many who shouldn't at times that they shouldn't. If I were female I would be more reluctant to be as public as I am. If I had a lot of money or were better known I would be more careful.(emphasis original)
So if I read that right, you're essentially saying anonymity is a necessary evil?
In the bold parts, you seem to paint anonymity as, essentially, and evil. It "make[s] it harder for all of us and that strengthen McCarthyite tactics." Yet right in the next paragraph, you point out that people in situations different from yours would have a greater need for anonymity - and not some small segments of the population, as your first example (females) covers about half the population. What about a woman with a "corporate job" and "more money"?
The "accountability" that the anonymity of the internet is used to avoid is used both for good and ill. A haven for persecuted minorities, ways to gather and share with minimal threat of physical violence, to themselves and their loved ones.
Conceptually, it feels lightly reminscent of VCRs or Bittorrent - sure, it is abused and misused by a great many, but denying it to all results in a far worse loss. With VCRs, we're talking about copyright and IP, but with anonymity, it's about people's meatspace lives and sense of personal safety. The greater stakes make the anonymity all the more valuable.
The "average" nondescript heterosexual white male Christian 9-5 working American might not have a lot to fear. But what if I said I was a transexual? or a Sunni? or an immigrated Saudi? or anyone else, fearing persecution for what they are rather than who they are? -

Re:Why do I...
I second xkcd. Randall Munroe posts on here too, occasionally.
If we're doing webcomics...
I also quite like the off-the-wall humour of ctrl-alt-del, which isn't as Windows oriented as it sounds. It's a bit like Penny Arcade (another recommendation) but with slightly different eccentric wit.

Paperwork overhead is a serious thing!
Sometimes the level of detail required in my reports seems like this:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/4/23/
The coding itself is actually very good where the work/paperwork ratio is concerned, but the other stuff I do is terrible...ooh I logged out and logged back in on this user's PC to un-hang it, I better make a note of that. Oh I just helped someone set up a job on the copier, better make a note of that too!

Product placement doesn't belong in a lot of games. I might get mildly annoyed if I were to get a quest in World of Warcraft to pick someone up a delicious Whopper at Burger King.

Re:I am _so_ calling this one:
I agree 100%. It's not so much libertarianism, as it is extremism. Slashdot can sometimes paint libertarianism in a bad light. I don't know if there really are so many libertarian extremists out there, or if it's John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory at work, but there's a lot of extreme libertarian views out there. People who think inciting violence or libel should be protected free speech, that (as you mentioned) the government should just fuck off out of, well, everywhere, that the government shouldn't be allowed to pass legislation like the patriot act in times of crisis (yes, I know, it's outstayed it's welcome by several years), or even that we should be allowed to shoot our leaders in the head should we be displeased with them.
Core values, like the tendency to grant freedom to individuals and to keep safeguards to prevent abuse of power, I think are all fine propositions, it's just that when they get taken to dizzying highs that they become somewhat repulsive. Just like with any ideology.

A tool I can't use
I've never used twitter. But I keep seeing so much about it - a comic at Penny Arcade, articles, political events and such. So I thought I'd check it out. Went over to sign up and was told that it was under heavy load and to come back later. (Twitter is over capacity. Too many tweets! Please wait a moment and try again.) I've tried a few times in the last week or two. Looks like that thing is suffocating under its own weight.

Re:Mine
I don't use RSS feeds for webcomics, so here is the set of pages I regularly visit:
XKCD We probably all know this one.
Cyanide and Happiness Somewhat twisted humour.
Errant Story Excellent art and storyline.
Bunny Strange humour about bunnies.
QC Indy rock comic of social interaction.
Megatokyo Megatokyo. Has gone downhill in recent years, but still good art.
Penny Arcade Gamer comic, quite famous.
PBF Perry Bible Fellowship hasn't updated in some time, but very funny when he does.
Edible Dirt is a series of single-panel jokes. Very funny, often somewhat twisted.
Ctrl-Alt-Del is a comic about a few gamer roomates.
LFG WoW/MMO/D&D spoof. Quite funny, good art, interesting plot. Many references break the 4th wall.
Two-Lumps is a comic about cats, 1 smart, 1 very, very dumb. I think the artist is stalking my cat to get ideas for the dumb one.
Gunnerkrigg Court Beautiful art, excellent story. And robots.
underpower hasn't updated in some time, great single-page art pieces recently and an actual story before.
Girl Genius is all about Mad Science.
Bunny System is a comic about psychotic rabbits.
Something Positive is very, very cynical. It actually has 5 webcomics on 1 page. Very much worth checking out.
Head Trip is... a head trip.
FLEM hasn't updated in a while, and has a strange and rather violent storyline. Back to single-panel shorts now.
VGCats video game cats is excellent, if you play video games.
Clan of the Cats Author is going blind, will continue if she gets better. Great story and art.
Dr. McNinja The adventures of Dr. McNinja. Clean art, good story, ninjas on fire.
Code Name: Hunter Magic/technology interaction in a world strangely dominated by talking animals. Excellent facial expressions, especially for being animals.
Awkward Zombie gamer comic similar to vgcats.
No Need for Bushido Samurai story, well drawn and reasonably well written.
Giant ITP hosts both The Order of The Stick, a D&D spoof, and The Battle For Gobwin Knob, a comic about a GM who gets sucked into a world of his own design, on the losing side of a no-win scenario.
Last Blood Zombies have taken over the earth and killed nearly all humans, so now the vampires fight to protect their dwindling food source. Excellent drawing and unique story.
Chopping Block Butch the serial killer. Sick, twisted humour, but very funny.
Dominic Deegan Oracle for Hire, is a good story with pretty good art.
The Traveling Gnome Great art, story seems good so far.
One-Liners may be offensive to some, or funny to those with a sense of humour. -

Re:mutual exclusivity?
I really like Penny Arcade's comic about twitter.
Twitter seems useless to me. Maybe if my friends used it I might, but for now an away message or facebook status does the job just fine.
