Didn't they just fix this? There is a post on Products on this (also a cool post on the rumored iPhone 3g chip from infineon).

China will lose this battle. I cannot understand how they hope to contain information. Do they hope that their people just won't speak English. Its insane and hopeless, better to live in a free society, warts and all. Peace.

Re:Should we stay or should we go now (to Vista)?
I just downgraded to XP and am loving it. Since 99% of my time is spent in the browser, I could care less about the OS (and that includes Apple too). XP is lightweight and fast on a laptop, Vista not so much so. There is a post on the longevity of XP on Products

bomb
i've always wondered how you can tell if a hard disk is say a hard disk and not a bomb. how does the x-ray really call out "no bomb". i think anyone with a high school degree could refit a notebook with a bomb of sorts. btw, i found a funny post one the TSA/MBA at Products.

lemonade
Does anyone remember Lemonade Stand? That was the first game I played on the Apple ][. I would love to have that game redone on my iPhone. Would that be sweet? I love when old games are ported to new devices... like PacMan as a iGoogle widget (flash). Cool.

great review but...
Great review but I don't believe what they say about the 8 hour charge time on the battery. They've got a faulty battery on their unit... info on MacBook Air battery here.

what bugs me?
what bugs me? the fact that they too quickly obsolete products like my sweet iPhone. what also pisses me off? the fact that there isn't a new 16gb or 3g iphone. LOL!

unbrick
This is what Apple wanted to do... put bricked iPhones back into service. They have been having a support nightmare with this.

come on
Does anyone realize how many entities know about an Apple release before its out there. There are the hardware companies, the software companies, PR agencies. Apple tries to keep a lid on it but I doubt its easy to do. How much teamwork was involved is questionable, why work together? Who would like to break the story. I found references to the Macbook Air in several places before it existed, e.g., http://personafile.com/macbook-air.html had this page 2 hours before Jobs mentioned it. how?

MBA
I love the new MacBook Air. Everything but the battery that is not removable!

The MacBook Air is great. Perfect for the biz traveler. Love the wifi optical drive. Oh, yea I also ordered the 1.6 MacBook Air one about 1 hour ago!

iPhone article
A must read, pretty interesting, though typical inside Apple story. The iPhone was the easiest product to develop but Steve Jobs willed it into existance.
-
good article
This is a good article. Looking forward to developing iPhone apps with next week announced SDK. This is going to be cool.
-
when
When does it come out? And does it has copy and paste? The GPS thing for the iPhone will be pretty cool. I think I will actually use the maps thing now.
-
480
I am not sure how they can get the speed advertised. Also who will support this. Has Apple signed on? Sure need a faster interface to sync crap to my iPhone especially with video.

Why would anyone expect Apple to not break the hacked iPhones. Its what they do!

price?Am I missing something here? Seems like the sign the app approach, while adding security, etc. is also about charging for the apps. Not that I personally have anything against that, but will freeware apps be available? I don't think I'll just be able to write an app, and give it to friends. I will have to go through Apple, right?

newton IInewton II is already out on the market, its called the iPhone. That's what newton was supposed to be, remember the tag line, the personal communicator. newton's biggest problem was not hand writing recognition (which, yes, sucked and which apple's marketing spun out of control on) but rather size. everyone inside apple wanted it smaller, but the components of the day couldn't make that happen. now ask yourself, which added features did newton have that the iPhone doesn't? the iPhone is practically a superset of newton minus the developer story (meaning iPhone is presently a closed box). i suspect that apple's so-called-move (rumor) into the newton space is simply the next generation of iPhone.

accidental brickPerhaps Apple is taking an 'on purpose' posture here and has worked very hard (some say the reason for the delay of this firmware update) to make sure a hacked (unlocked) iPhone is bricked. I kind of doubt it (I think they are getting this outcome for 'free'). While I am no expert in hacking techniques used in this instance, I am quite familiar with the various models to hack into a ROM and vector to some other code. It would seem to me that Apple would have had to go out of its way to make sure that these hacks continued to work on a go forward basis. And whatever you believe their motives, they sure as hell wouldn't spend a cyle making sure something that they generally don't want to work, continues to work. Perhaps they make this new release more hacker proof, in a way we want them to do that. We constantly beat up Microsoft because of the holes left in their software, leading to viruses, etc. and we expect better of Apple. The fact is that we can't have it both ways, a bullet proof but hack available iPhone. For the record, I hate that Apple locked the iPhone in the first place.

notApple is not violating this law. Often people read the article about the law and not the law itself. Apple is not bound to provide warranty coverage on an altered product any more than one would expect a car manufacturer to warranty a car engine if it were altered under its warranty period. This is much to do about nothing, no one will succesfully press this to the point of suit because any reasonable lawyer knows Apple will prevail. Moreover, and perhaps more importantly, any fool that "bricks" his iPhone through modifications and then doesn't restore the "factory" firmware before service/etc. deserves what they get.

odd
This is an odd argument. Apple can do what it wants with its platform(s) and the consumer can do what he wants: buy or not buy it. Go buy an open phone if that's what you want. If you hate Apple policy, there is plenty of consumer choice (I can name dozens of smartphones that are "open" or support multiple carriers). I think this argument is really about: Apple is cool on one hand (its products) and not so cool on the other hand (its biz practices)... and people want it to be cool on both fronts, but like many things in life, you can wish it to be true, but doing so doesn't make it so. Personally I love my iPhone (the product) and basically live with the fact that Apple, the company, can be a real pain in the ass! Love hate relationship. -sammy / loving my iPhone

iphone2 wish list
As someone who truly loves my iPhone this is a great way to end a Friday, making a wish list, here goes:
1. 3G (duh!)
2. some clever way to cache those wi-fi username/password webpages
3. a harder case, to avoid scratching and breaking on drops
4. video calls (don't care if this is "iChat" or over the carrier's net)
5. a way to fresh the web page in safari without having to scroll back to the top of the page
6. locations aware (GPS or cell-tower location based info)
7. sync to outlook notes
8. other carriers!!!! / unlocked phone
9. better 3rd party app support
10. a iPhone nano version, cheaper, smaller, more mass market (duh! like apple isn't going to do this!!)
11. better camera; video/sound capture
12. a stock app that isn't 20 mins delayed (come on, can't we get past this silly 20 min delay)
13. integration with back-end carriers mins left in plan (*646# is kind of silly)
14. more memory
15. ability to rearrange icon (decide what's in the dock)
16. ability to control roaming
17. voice-over-wifi like the t-mobile offering
18. native Exchange integration to sync calendar, etc. over the internet
19. full sync over the internet
20. bottle opener...
and with #20, off to open a beer.
have a nice weekend,

vista
When i read these stories, I have a pretty different view here: this is great news for Microsoft. They continue to have record quarters in terms of revenue and the upside for Vista is just starting. No matter what they say, organizations will eventually move from XP to Vista (and nothing else). It will take a long time just like 2000 to XP. My comments have nothing to do with my feelings about Vista usability etc. I use both a MacBook and a Vista desktop (at work)... I prefer the Mac (don't we all?).

gphone or iphone
I am sticking with my iPhone. For starters, its exists and by the time this gphone comes out Apple will have 3G anyway. Somehow I am guess Apple will do (has done) a better job than Google. Google make a great search engine, etc. but Apple gets the consumer device stuff big time. What will google do on the phone that will make it so much better than Apple? Will they somehow limit the type of local searches to keep that market to themselves (which pretty much goes against their MO). Can't wait to see how this shakes out, but I will repeat: I am stick with my iPhone, now and next version! -sammy / loving my iPhone

UK
UK citizens know how to compare. Why is this being compared against AT&T plan? This is a different carrier with different plans. Apples to Oranges, grown in different orchards. We US mobile phone owners have enough problems here figuring one plan against another (from carrier to carrier); I wouldn't want to spend my minutes (pun intended) opining on the differences in rate structures/model between the US carriers and non-US carriers, unless of course I traveled there often. A simple question to anyone that knows... can you pop out the AT&T SIM and pop in the O2 SIM if you have both plans?

lawsThe laws surrounding unlocking, reverse enginerring, DRM (how about that latest ringtones craziness) are confused at best and behind the curve for sure. Looks out our brilliant legislatures and you'll know why. Most laws seems to better address yesterday than tomorrow. I guess Apple best defense is to simply make it hard to do, in other words spend their energies here vs. anything legal (when it comes to unlocking).
You know what's interesting. A friend used to work at Palm, the hoops they had to go through to get a phone certified on a network was (is) amazing. Of course, even if a phone isn't approved any phone can roam (kind of makes the process silly), but I digress. So why does T-Mobile, for example, so readily accept an iPhone on its network, its not like Apple applied and jumped through the cert hoops. Inquiring idiots (like me) want to know.- Sammy with iPhone

30 to 40As others have stated, this is kind of a useless factoid (last I checked Apple has a pretty big payroll, for example). In the end Apple will make between 30 to 40 points gross margin, closer to 40 on this item. Who cares? If you think they will sell a ton, buy Apple stock. If you think this is a rip off, by someone else's (lame) MP3 player and pay that manufacturer a similiar number in terms of "profit".
btw, this new iPod is quite nice, if I didn't have a new iPhone, I'd go buy one straight away.

no ipodSeems to me if music cannot be played on an iPod (I hear these files are WMA with WMA DRM) then the service that sells it has a very limited market. No news to anyone, but iPod are in use everywhere: mine can be found plugged into my ears during a workout or hanging at Starbucks or whereever, plugged into my car stereo, and plugged into my home stereo. The only other place I play music is from my PC, I guess that pretty much defines the "doesn't work with iPod" market.

vista and macsThe thing about the mac vs PC arguement is that its just like politics. You are on one side or the other and no matter what the evidence, your side is always right (or left. LOL!). Or like religion, same difference. For me, its pretty simple, Microsoft dominates and about the only way to change the rules is to change the game. The Mac user experience today is only incrementally better than Vista, maybe even a lot better. But its not a game changer like the original Mac was. Remember when the original Mac came out, it was radically different, not marginally different. So Apple has to innovate massively if we are going to get a game changer, otherwise we'll be arguing who has better search, who invented transparency first, etc.
The other hope for Apple is something like the iPhone. The iPhone is a game changer in the mobile market, Apple will take this new platform up and down the market. Its big breakthrough in terms of market dominance will be down market, when kids everywhere are using an iPhone mini. The iPhone/iPod dominance will help the Mac, but really only help the Mac, with the so-called halo effect. That has already happened to some degree. People are back into Apple because of the iPod not because of the Mac, the Mac just benefits.

3G not yet
I seriously doubt Apple with do 3G first in Europe. I suspect if they did it would put a wet blanket on US sales. Some/most US buyers would wait for the 3G model. Some have suggested that they will announce 3G and also a 3G phone. That to me makes no sense, it too close to the follow on to the original iPhone and I think Apple, with its price drop, is pretty much fixed for the Christmas selling season. I would then expect a new 3G 16GB phone in January (you know, this happens all the time with electronics, right after Christmas the newer new goodies come out).

"But the iPod touch isn't for everyone."
I too liked that comment. For example, the Touch isn't for me because I have its big brother, the iPhone. This is a good article, especially about how the screen works. Does anyone know of another device in the market that uses the same "clean" touch technology? The iPhone screen is just so accurate with respect to touch, its awesome. My 4yr old can us the touch gestures very well (with almost no training). Sammy / with iPhone

does the iPod Touch wi-fi support WPA2 security?

off?
I wonder what he means by "off". If you use the Airplane switch on your iPhone that kills all wireless signals, phone and wi-fi. But if your actually power it off, well its OFF. does he means he just clicked the top button that turns off the screen. any fools know that the phone isn't off then! (I wish there was a way to turn off AT&T and just use wi-fi, you can go the other way around, turn off wi-fi and just use AT&T).

iPod Touch or iPhone
why not just get an iPhone and forget the iPod Touch? many people don't know that you don't have to activate the iPhone on AT&T. here's what you get: everything that is Touch + email access (doesn't look like the touch includes the email app). here's what you lose: memory, you can't get an iphone 16gb yet (and when it does come to market, look for at least a $499 price tag).

crazy AT&T
For the first time in years, I was "forced" to sign up for a new contract for my iPhone with AT&T. I hated the idea, but I wanted my iPhone. Later my friend told me about the pre-pay option. He bought his iPhone and choose to pre-pay the account. No contract. He didn't (or couldn't) port his old number with this option (as guess what, he was still tied to his T-Mobile account! ironical.)
-
seems fairThis seems fair. No way Apple was going to refund the difference. So $100 store credit isn't bad. Its practically $100 to you, regardless of what Apple pays. I mean consider the fact that you bought an iPhone for $599 and Apple pays less, you didn't complain about this. Of course, its not like you've got yourself $100 to buy something else elsewhere. But hey you are an Apple early-adopter, so you're likely to buy something again in an Apple Store. Only disappointment is the fact that Apple didn't do this from the get go.
Sammy / still loving, loving, loving my iPhone and now look forward to seeing more people with them!

Re:iTouch = loss of functionality?I totally agree with you if you are only using the iPod features. But I'm afraid this is the wave of the future for Apple... what touch does for them is avail the largest amount of real estate to a screen. Physical buttons take space and Apple wants more screen regardless of the size of the device. So I think you're going to have to live with that shift forward. Btw, does anyone know if the iPod Touch can do that neat trick and flip the screen when you tilt it? My iPhone does that in the iPod interface... but only in horizontal mode do I get cover flow... this is a real pain in the ass when I have the thing strapped to my arm while running, flipping around sometimes in cover flow mode, others times not. nuts.
Sammy... still lovin' my iPhone and willing to love the iPod Touch too!!

the 'touch' is pretty cool don't you think? i am wondering if it will support mail, it has safari. anyone know? Sammy wanting a iPod touch along with my iPhone (ok the iPhone is better)

Re:What was the question?
I seriously think Palm is doomed and must sell itself fast. The Treo isn't that interesting in light of the Apple iPhone, meaning they can't complete in the high, high end (which they used to own) and must go lower, which RIMM owns. Doomed. Foleo was just a pet project to keep the original founder happy.
-
Re:Heh
A somewhat trivial point but there is no insurance last I checked. I once dropped a cell phone in the toilet and once in a hot tub. On of the two events I was very happy about, its kind of the reason I justified the move up to my Apple iPhone (and the loser, my Treo 650 and Verizon).
-
Re:You know
Of course, people "refresh" their iPod... i had a mini, now I have a 2nd generation nano and a 2nd gen shuffle. The funny thing is that I haven't touched any of them when I got my iPhone. I even thought I would use the shuffle to workout but i soon bought an armband for the iPhone. What I really wonder is how iPhone will affect iPod sales at the high end.
-
Re:BBC is usually wrong about US lawI think this is a very thoughful response. I wonder with the geohot hack, how does the voicemail feature work or not on T-Mobile? It seems to me that voicemail is downloaded on Edge and place on the phone flash, awaiting the customer's random access. That would mean that AT&T did a bunch of work to make their voicemail system output and respond to a 2nd channel for requests for voicemail messages. That is the kind of software-as-a-service model that mstone is talking about.
I for one love my iPhone but would rather be on Verizon (let's see that hack!!... here we just open the box and pull out "radio", replacing it with this one I made over the summer, hehe).

Re:Houses by the roadside?I agree. This whole idea seems nuts. Better solutions can be found. Check oout SpeedInfo.com for example. There is something to say for cars blipping off data. My friend works for Booze and they are involved in a US government project where data from cars is sent up via WiMAX. Speed, position, and other non-obvious stuff, like are the wipers running and if so at what speed (to determine if its raining).
I for one will be sticking with the lamo traffic my iPhone gives me with Google maps. NOT!

vista sp1why even do a SP1? doesn't their update mechanism update the system automagically? what would sp1 include that couldn't be included in the monthly updates they roll? maybe its just a roll up and therefore a marketing thing for biz, you know, now that sp1 is rolled out, you mr. IT guy can safely update all your laptops (of course, then why wait until next year to do this). just doesn't make sense, maybe Microsoft just can't get out of old patterns...
