Re:Well, something *has* changed
Really? When I searched for "Michelle Obama Monkey" on google image search, the pictures I got was of George Bush.
http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm157/cin2008_album/bush_monkey3.jpg
http://www.globalpov.com/images/bush-monkey.jpg
And a monkey that got to first base:
http://klog.imjustsaying.org:81/files/images/monkey.preview.jpg
Another was of Palin being compared as an Ape
http://i.somethingawful.com/u/garbageday/apepalin.jpg
The only Michelle Obama photo was from a site called celebrity apes (a site which now seems defunct http://www.celebrityape.com/).
This furor over the photos shows a double standard in the media when liberals are concerned. -
Re:Who'd have thunk it?
Android is fairly locked down - in the process of installing an application from the market the market tells you exactly what that app has the API hooks to do - see this screenshot http://media.photobucket.com/image/android%20market%20access%20rights/msanto/One-Offs%202008/AndroidMarket.jpg. Of course users are lazy and a lot won't bother to read this screen, so you'll have some apps doing bad things, which will get pulled from the market as soon as anyone notices, sure, but in the meantime they can't really brick your phone. Being based on linux regular applications don't have su rights and can't touch anything important. On a rooted phone (think jailbroken except it's not against their terms!) like mine any application which tries to use root privledges makes a screen pop up asking me whether this app should be allowed to or not so I'm still protected.

Re:Kevlar
Okay, having looked this up again (I hadn't for some time), I will have to back down from my position that the longbow killed plate armor. But the longbow did demonstrate that it was no longer the panacea it had been (as at Agincourt and other examples), and it gradually faded starting about then, through the advent of early firearms, and basically died in the form of full-body armor not long after.
You're at least closer to right, and for that at least, I'm happy. You're still getting your cause and effect mixed up (plate being a panacea that longbows cured, given that
... it was the other way around, in terms of invention dates). And that Agincourt was bad leadership + mud + arrows, not just arrows. Arrows are artillery - They pin you down, break charges, break morale, etc. They're damned useful, but plate was great protection against them as actual damage dealers.
I mean, really. Read the actual description of the battle itself. It's full of bad decisions on the part of the French. I'm going to start quoting, here. The French men-at-arms reached the English line and actually pushed it back, with the longbowmen continuing to fire until they ran out of arrows and then dropping their bows and joining the melée (which lasted about three hours), implying that the French were able to walk through the fire of tens of thousands of arrows while taking comparatively few casualties. But the physical pounding even from non-penetrating arrows, combined with the slog in heavy armour through the mud, the heat and lack of oxygen in plate armour with the visor down, and the crush of their numbers meant they could "scarcely lift their weapons" when they finally engaged the English line.
See? Bunches of arrows slogged off like nothing. Tens of thousands of arrows, few casualties. Plate must have been damned awesome.
When the English archers, using hatchets, swords and other weapons, attacked the now disordered and fatigued French, the French could not cope with their unarmoured assailants (who were much less hindered by the mud). The exhausted French men-at-arms are described as having been knocked to the ground and then unable to get back up.
And there you go. The archers got more kills in melee. Crazy, isn't it? Plate was damned good at what it did.
Also, finally: Here. 35 years after Agincourt. Invented. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y110/Nephtys/Miscellaneous/Real_Fighting_Stuff/Avant_armour_1440.jpg -

Re:I dunno, man. Snow is heavy
The ice dam can actually form at any point on the roof - for example, on an area in the shade on even a well-insulated roof without much of a slope, or an accumulation of snow or ice.
There's also this from the article:
Fuller had built the "US Pavilion" at Expo Montreal in 1976 -- three-fourths of a sphere consisting of 1900 molded, transparent Plexiglas panels, 200 feet high and 250 feet in diameter, covering 1.1 acres. We saw what happend later.
Also, if a large non-rigid dome deflates, or has a catastrophic failure, its' weight can cause a lot of damage. To get people who are trapped out, you're going to need to cut the dome.
Individual domes are cheaper, and don't present such a large disaster footprint in the event of failure.

Hehe... Back when I was in the Air Force, we had a squirrel shut down the entire base for 8 hours. S/he crawled into the main power station, and committed suicide across the breakers, blowing up a good chunk of the station and about 100' of main feeder line.
Today no doubt the press would have whipped up frenzy about a "possible terrorist attack" with artistic renderings of the squirrel in mufti....

Re:Baggies, yes ... but cheerios?
Only twice? Dude, have you looked at your own picture? You look like a desi Jimi Hendrix (and almost every other pothead I knew back in high school).
Don't get me wrong. You should look as you wish and be true to yourself (and Jimi was one of the best guitarists ever) but if you're trying NOT to look like a pothead, you're not succeeding.

Wow. This part of the Terms of Service for Games Workshop is pretty disturbing:
"SUBMISSIONS
Any notes, e-mails, online messages or bulletin board postings, ideas, suggestions, concepts, designs, or other material submitted to any physical GW company address or to any web site owned or controlled by GW and/or to any e-mail addresses contained in or on those web sites ("GW Web Sites") will become the property of GW throughout the world and GW shall be entitled to use the material for any type of use forever, including in any media whether now known or hereafter devised. When you submit any material to any physical GW company address or any GW Web Sites, you agree, offer, warrant, and represent, both explicitly and tacitly (and GW accepts) that you are assigning all intellectual property rights in that material to GW and that GW has the right to use that material at any time entirely in its own discretion for whatsoever purpose including for commercial, promotional, and advertising purposes without any obligation (including any financial obligation) to you now or at any time in the future. You waive and relinquish any rights, including "moral rights," that may exist in any content to the furthest extent permissible by law and agree not to assert any rights over that content. We are afraid that in order to protect ourselves legally, this is the only way we can operate. If you are unhappy with this policy, then please do not post or send any material to GW.Is this just Games Workshop being incredibly greedy, or is this SOP for online sites now?

In other news...
Other gaming companies are embracing the idea of open source and digital distribution, for example: Catalyst Game Labs. More importantly, their open source release of Eclipse Phase, and perhaps even unofficial support for the fan-made MegaMek/MekWars for their Battletech line.
Meanwhile companies like WizKids and Games Workshop continue to show their complete disdain for their customers and the fans of their products as well as their utter inability to properly market their games. Which is especially evidenced by the utter failure of WizKids' "Mech Clix" line for Battletech, and arguably evidenced by Games Workshops' constant price increases for Warhammer 40k; Catalyst seems to be going in completely the opposite direction - embracing digital distribution and open source in ways essentially unheard of in this day and age. -
Re:Could it be a sign of delay in the "next gen?"
P.S. If you want to see where the next generation of consoles are headed, simply look at Crysis on a maxed out Rig.
Current Generation PCs can still barely run the game at 1600p with 30fps, personally I predict the next generation consoles to have equivalent power to this.
Here is a screenshot.

Re:News Sites also do this.
I don't understand. Your subject says news, but your post says Fox. Which is it? Fox xor a news website?
Wake up. That ain't Fox.
Can you say "New York Times"? Great! I knew you could!
Get how they whitewash Obama's Olympic FAIL:
Those who read the New York Times's coverage of the unsuccessful results of Barack and Michelle Obama's attempt to seal the 2016 Summer Olympics bid for Chicago on Friday afternoon ('For Obama, an Unsuccessful Campaign") might want to read it again.
If it doesn't seem the same, it's because it isn't.
See the whitewash right next to the original here.
You think the NY Times is going to be able to hide the fact that Obama's done NOTHING? Lordy, even Saturday Night Live is now running skits where 0bama is (weakly) lambasted for accomplishing "Jack" and "Squat".

Linux user restricted to FF and Opera? I'm not sure that you said what you meant to say. Maybe you meant, "Of the three choices being tested, Chromium is still to unreliable to use on Linux."
As Linux users, we have several browsers available that the larger MS audience doesn't have. Midori, epiphany, Konqueror, Links, Links2 - the list goes on.
If you've never used Midori, you should try it. It's the only browser to get 100% on all the acid tests.

It's not puffery, they contain statements that are not subjective. For example:

They say "Linux is a self help solution. There are no step-by-step tutorials provided, and help documentation is limited. These remarks are easily proven false, by demonstrating the large volume of step-by-step tutorials and help documentation that are available.

Makes a very non-subjective claim that Windows 7 is compatible with Many Printers and Scanners -- as in, a large number, and Linux is compatible with few -- as in a small number. In fact, they display a bar graph for Windows and Linux compatibility; the graph for Windows is 100% full and the graph for Linux is 25% of full, indicating Linux is compatible with only 25% as many printers as Windows 7 is.This is easily falsifiable by showing the large number of printers that Linux drivers are available for, the small number that drivers are unavailable for. And also showing the large number of printers Linux has drivers for that don't work in Windows 7 / Vista.
The same applies to Camera / mp3 player / iPod compatibility.
The claim Linux has no "Authorized support" available can also be shown to be false.
