Student Satellite Ready for Space
An anonymous contributor writes "Nearly one hundred students from all over Europe have been working hard on SSETI Express Satellite (Student Space Education and Technology Initiative). Last week a handful of students gathered at the Netherlands to put the finishing touches to the flight model. The final exams in the space simulators will follow in January - the last hurdle before launch in May 2005. The satellite has been largely designed and built via the Internet. The students keep each other informed about the latest developments using a special news server and weekly chat sessions." -

Martian Moon Phobos in Detail

Wireless Chip Embedded in Paper

The embedded chip is 0.5x0.5mm and comes with a built-in antenna for wireless transmission at frequencies of between 13.56MHz to 2.45GHz. Origin of Cosmic Rays Revealed

The astronomers studied the remnant of a supernova that exploded some 1,000 years ago, leaving behind an expanding shell of debris which, seen from the Earth, is twice the diameter of the Moon. Cosmic rays are extremely energetic particles that continually bombard the Earth, thousands of them passing through our bodies every day." -

Physicists Finally Solve the Falling-Paper Problem

Why don't flat things fall straight down? Pieces of paper fall down, then rise into the air, then glide along, then again rise... It occurs in a seemingly chaotic manner. Now researchers at Cornell University have solved the falling paper problem by calculating the motions of a scientific journal page in flight and there were a few surprises." Sun's Activity Levels Reconstructed

The activity of the Sun over the last 11,400 years, i.e., back to the end of the last ice age on Earth, has now for the first time been reconstructed quantitatively. The scientists have analyzed the radioactive isotopes in trees that lived thousands of years ago. As scientists report in the current issue of the science journal Nature, one needs to go back over 8,000 years in order to find a time when the Sun was, on average, as active as in the last 60 years." -
China to Launch Solar Telescope

Japan and the United States are also jointly developing an SST, coded as SOLAR-B, now scheduled for launch in the September of 2005. But with a diameter of 0.5 metre, SOLAR-B has half capability in optical resolution than that of the Chinese-made solar telescope." -
Nissan Exhibits IEEE 1394-Compatible Car

The prototype is equipped with 7 cameras on the body and a 12-inch LCD monitor in the front and another in the rear seat area. Thanks to the in-vehicle IEEE 1394 LAN, which is capable of high-speed communications at 400Mbps via optical cable, the front and the rear seat monitors can display various information simultaneously, for example. The application of optical fiber also means that the weight of the cables can be reduced to about one-half the weight of a conventional wiring harness." -

Wastewater Into Energy

The research revealed that the wastewater contained enough organic material to potentially produce 113 megawatts of electricity - 5 times more than required to operate wastewater treatment plants."
