Re:Brings the wackos on the left and right togethe
Don't conflate religious (read: christian) fundies and sjws just because there's sometimes a bit of overlap in the things they get outraged about (but not in the reasons for the outrage). It's been decades since any huge corporation has gone out of its way to pander to christians. The religious right would list a hundred additional things in mainstream video games that it finds just as offensive as a bit of gratuitous cleavage, but the left is either supportive or indifferent to all of them, so they stay in.
If christians ran things, the boobies in, say, Mortal Kombat 11 would've still been toned down, but so too would've all the lovingly animated skeleton-removal, organ-blending, and face-ripping-off stuff.

Are they still selling LIfe of Black Tiger?
Let's see:
https://store.playstation.com/...
Looks like they are. Seems like they're actually just doing the Steam two-step, where they stand there bobbing their head along to the money, until something starts making noise about being restricted in some market. At which point, they shuffle things around, until that noise stops, then resume doing as little as they can.
Which is fine as far as I'm concerned - but don't count on them for whatever standards you might hold for quality content - as long as it doesn't throw glaring error messages during an official play session loop, it's OK for the store, plus whatever the content ratings groups decide to do on their side for each regional jurisdiction.

Sole proprietors cannot develop for PlayStation
Why do you think it's now impossible to make games with a small group or solo dev?
You might need a "small group" just for the organizational and accounting aspects of dealing with the console makers that act as gatekeepers to your market. For example, the PlayStation developer signup form currently requires each developer to be a corporation or LLC with its own tax ID, an office with a static IPv4 address, and a domain name with website and email under that domain. SIE declines to do business with sole proprietorships, and many ISPs offer a static IP only to offices in commercially zoned areas, not to home offices.

Re:PS4
I R that FA, thanks, but I'm not making this stuff up.
If this is no longer true, then please let me know - maybe, HOPEFULLY, they eventually changed the way it works. And if that's the case, then I'll be a little sad. -

Re:Why would they jump?
Why would they jump? If they can capture the market of people who want "games that work even if the Internet is down" and "games that don't glitch out if it's raining" and "games that work even if gamecompany takes the online version down" then that's a pretty big market.
It's a bad statement in the first place, as Sony has already hedged their bets and has a cloud-based gaming service, PS Now, which is already part of the PS3, PS4, and PS Vita (and available for Windows as well).
It also ignores the reality that Sony's PlayStation is massive globally, but many parts of the globe don't have good high-speed (and/or high data cap) internet service. For many parts of the world, you still need to go out and buy discs to get your games. Sony isn't about to ignore this segment of the market, because as you say -- it's a pretty damned big market.

Re:Odds are you can get all the same stuff for $10
Not quite, the PS4 does not play PS1 games, Official Playstation Backward Compatibility Support Article. Maybe there's a way to rip them, but it's not as simple as insert disc to play game. Keeps the PS3 relevant though.

Re:Are there any good PS1 emulators these days?
You can play SOTN on every Sony game console EXCEPT the PS4.
If you have the disc you can just slap it into any PSone/PS2/PS3 you find. The game is also on PSN, so you can play it on the PS3/PSP/Vita.
https://store.playstation.com/...
The retranslated and revoiced version included in Dracula X Chronicles for the PSP, is on PSN and also playable on Vita.

Re:The Windows XP of games consoles
That's almost certainly why they want it to go away and die.
You also missed out the part where they can re-release old PS2 games on the playstation store for more precious $$$. There is already a section for PS2 Classics on PS3/4.

Re:Heh
I knew it would be a giant failure solely based on the fact that it was a console space sim.
No Man's Sky isn't a space sim. You spend most of your time on planetary surfaces, not in your ship cockpit. Not only that, but ship combat isn't common.
Space sim has evolved beyond the capacity of stagnant console controllers, and the whole fanbase is housed on the PC. Flight Stick + Keyboard is the way to go.
They have? I'm not so sure of that, considering that THIS is a PSone controller:

ICO was a great game!
The PS2 game Ico was great. It even got remastered for the PS3.
Oh wait, you mean ICO = Initial Coin Offering.
Hey, fucktard
/. editors, how about doing your fucking JOB and describing an acronym the first time it is used. Oh wait, that would involve actual work. After 20+ years you STILL can't do this?

Re:Cord-cutting!
I'm about to do the same to Comcast.. I'll just keep their internet.
I did this last week. Made the switch to PlayStation Vue. I bumped internet service up from 25 Mbps to 75 Mbps though for video streaming purposes though. Testing it out, I've gotten as high as 90 Mbps. It's saving me about $75 per month!
-
$750 for the TiVo box; Super Saver Shipping
CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox, PBS, CW, etc. are all free with this metal thing in the attic.
Then you need to pay $750 for a TiVo DVR ($200 for the hardware and $550 for the required program guide subscription) or just accept that you'll miss any program aired when you happen not to be at home.
Amazon Prime? Free since I already have it for deliveries
"Super Saver Shipping" for large orders is also free, albeit with a minimum order of $35 and longer delivery time. People rationalize not paying extra for the upgrade from Super Saver Shipping to Prime because they consider faster delivery a luxury that can be dispensed with. Their time/money tradeoff is biased toward time.
PLaystation Vue: $35 with auto DVR to the cloud!
The FAQ implies that one person can have PlayStation Vue service only at two home addresses in his lifetime: "You can only make a home location change one time, otherwise your account may be blocked from service." Thus it might not be practical for people who move often following job opportunities.
how well does that work for someone who doesn't already own a PlayStation 4 console on which to play PlayStation 4 games?
-
Re:PS1, most likely
I think it uses the PS1 and not the Sega Saturn version of Castlevania: SOTN. It has been awhile since I had a usable 360 console. I have since bought SOTN on PS3. I have owned copies of SOTN on PS1, 360, and PS3 now. I wish Sony would release an upgrade path for all the classics to the PS4. But you say that the classic games released on the 360 will play on the One? I may look into that again. I have Blade Kitten on the PC. thought I had it on the PS3, but I don't see it in my downloads. I thought I bought it originally on the 360, but without one, I don't know how to check. https://www.playstation.com/en... says that it has been available for the PS3, but click on the link and it opens a store page that says the url does not exist and searching for Blade Kitten on the store proper turns up 0 hits. Very frustrating.

Re:Must run NMS in wine on Linux
For this requirement:
My key requirement is to be able to play No Man's Sky without booting into windows, and to be future-proof by supporting at least current gen VR rigs
You'll need to go BSD, but you're in luck, you can buy the necessary hardware at your local Enormo-mart:
https://www.playstation.com/en...
Then you can buy whatever Linux machine you want for your work needs, and have the PS4 for games. And never have to touch windows to play No Man's Sky.

Re: Why is it tanking only now?
Cheap games. If you don't insist on the latest releases, PC games are typically much cheaper. Even for the same titles.
Not necessarily, I've compared prices for older games and sometimes the console version is cheaper. Your thinking is a relic of the time before PSN and Xbox Marketplace started having regular sales.
Game selection. Some games need something more flexible than a game controller (e.g. a keyboard).
I'm looking at the USB ports on the PS4 and PS3 (and PS2 before them), they're there for a reason. And yes, I have plugged keyboards into those consoles and used said keyboards with various console games. The last time I did it was last night while playing STO (Star Trek Online) on the PS4 while editing the Bio of one of my BOFF's (Bridge Officers)
.Some developers need a marketplace more open than a game console (e.g. something that they can access).
That thinking is a relic of the time when console marketplaces were less friendly to indie developers....that's not the case now:
https://store.playstation.com/...
Overall, better compatibility across "generations". PC games may be dodgy when it comes down to hardware support, but a well developed PC game has a better chance of running on a new PC 10 years down the road than a console game does on a new console.
That's because the PC has been a OS based Microsoft monoculture. Consoles haven't, not even taking into account the changes of architecture. After all the PS2 is MIPS, the PS3 PPC and the PS4 X86_64.
Unless you get lucky and are offered the privilege of paying for a new version of that console game.
Cross-buy helped a little in the early days of the PS4. That was where if you had bought the PS3 version of some games, you got the PS4 version for free or at a discount. It was mostly an indie thing.
In some cases that applies to the Vita version as well.

It's almost identical to Sony Playstation VUE
...including the DVR feature and live local network channels in certain markets, but VUE has a few more channels, like AMC and Discovery ( https://www.playstation.com/en... ). Stupidly, Sony linked the VUE service to the Playstation, which doesn't help people take it seriously and one had to have a Playstation to sign up until Sony very recently added VUE to newer Sony smart TVs. Google/You Tube aren't going to wall off their service the way Sony did.

Re:Double-dipping Nintendo
With consoles, they expect you to upgrade much sooner than you would need to with a PC.
They do?
Original Playstation 1995
PS2: 2000
PS3: 2006
PS4 2013You're telling me you didn't upgrade your PC between 2006 and 2013?
You can't just swap out the GPU on a console to play the "next-gen", you have to literally buy an entirely new console and start from scratch.
You do? That's not quite as true as one might think:
PS2: backwards compatible with PSone games.
PS3: ALL PS3's can play PSone discs. CECHA, CECHB, and CECHE models are also compatible with PS2 games (and SACD's).
Now the PS4 is different, with the change of Architecture to x86_64 and the decision to not slap a PS3 Cell/RSX or PS2 EE/GS in there to keep the cost down that means no hardware compatibility. Some games have been re-released/re-mastered on PSN. In some cases it is cross buy if you already had the PS3 version, you don't have to pay for the PS4 version.
Playstation NOW, while a fee-based service is also a way of playing older games on a PS4.
Plus, games are MUCH cheaper on PC -- that alone is worth it.
No, they're not. New games cost pretty much the same. In some cases even older games have the same price on console and PC Example, Rocket League.

Re:Welcome to Trump's America Inc.I'm actually getting ready in the next couple of days, after I watch the last couple items off the DVR....to cut the cord on ATT Uverse.
This is the exact kind of crap that should really drive folks to do this.
I figured my set up....
For local channels, I set up an indoor HDTV antenna (you can find these on sale, I got mine at Wally Worldmart for $79). I put this up on a pole in my house and works great. I had to get this, in order to get our local PBS (WYES) that is still on VHF, and is very hard to pull in with other antennas. Otherwise, I'd recommend one of the Mohu Leaf HDAntennas. This one worked great except for my local PBS and I like some shows on there.
I bought a Tivo Roamia OTA 1TB DVR to act as my local channel tuner. It comes with included lifetime guide service. Worked great out of the box.
The only drawback of the Tivo unit, is that the Netflix and Amazon Prime streaming which it also does (and searches across), the front ends are horribly laggy, but for OTA needs, it is amazing.
For my streaming needs, I got the Amazon FireTV.
I got this over the FireTV stick for its extra computing power. It streams VERY well Netflix, and Amazon Prime (4K on these too). AND...the power was needed for my streaming app that solves my "cable network" needs.
I did Playstation VUE. I got the 70+ channels package for $35/mo. It has all the ESPNs (I like during college football season), all the cable news I want (MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, etc), and channels like TCM, TBS, Nat'l Geo, FX..etc...
It also has built in DVR functionality, which makes it great for catching the Walking Dead on AMC to watch at my convenience and skip commercials.
The Fire TV is powerful enough to use the VUE guide....Roku 3 and PS3 could not use the guide very well at all.
So, this is my living room.
For the other TVs in my house (bedrooms, office), I set up a bit of networking for those.
I set up Tivo Minis to stream from the main unit into each bedroom, for DVR and live HD tv. The main unit has 4 receivers, so you can watch different stuff in each room. I also have an Amazon FireTV for each other room, so I can watch streaming or VUE cable channels in each room. Again, each can be watching different things.
The Tivo Minis don't work wirelessly, and I also found the FireTVs don't work as well wireless as they do wired.
So, for each room I have Ethernet over AC....and a little TP-Link switch there too.
So now..everything hooks up nicely, and I dropped from $113/mo for UVerse to $35/mo with VUE.
I figure in about 8 mos I'll break even on the new hardware.
So far, the only caveats....my house has some less than optimal wiring, I think leftover from Katrina rework problems. At times, my Tivo has problems with slow network, but not that often. Also, setting up the Tivo minis...it has to go through Tivo Centrals computers before it can get recognized by your main DVR unit. This is a horribly thought out, PITA...but if you register your Mini online with tivo 24 hours before you hook it up, and then you have the main unit phone home a few times while trying to sync them , it will finally work. They need to fix that. I almost gave up on it, but once it syncs..works as intended and I live the Tivo guide and user interface. Auto commer

Re:too much segmentation
While I agree with what you said about content disappearing, you've got everything else wrong (in fact, it looks like you're deliberately misstating things). A la carte pricing commoditizes the layers of the TV watching stack, allowing us to shop around and swap out parts we don't care about. Even for people who were taking full advantage of everything their package offered, it's almost assuredly cheaper with a la carte pricing, and for everyone else it certainly is.
Using my own town as an example, Suddenlink is the lone cable provider and their cheapest TV+Internet plan is $98.95 per month for new customers. The same Internet access is $39.95 when purchased separately as a new customer, so we can say that basic cable costs $59 each month, and that's before you include HBO ($+19/mo.), which, I'll note, you conveniently forgot to include in your traditional package example. Broken out that way, it should be obvious just how bad of a deal it actually is, since it's easy to find basic content for less than $59.
With that same $59/mo., we could pick up ALL of these:
1) Access Slim bundle from Playstation Vue for $29.99
2) CBS All Access for $5.99
3) HBO Now for $14.99
4) Amazon Prime for $8.25All of which is to say, you can stretch your dollars a LOT further by going a la carte, since you'd be gaining HBO content, DVR functionality across all of your devices, and all of the benefits of Amazon Prime (e.g. free two-day shipping, unlimited music streaming, unlimited photo storage, etc.). And that's assuming you actually wanted everything in the basic package to begin with. For our family, we don't care about sports, we don't care about live TV, we don't care about current seasons, and we'd rather binge watch, so Internet+Netflix is more than enough for us.
But even if you're not so extreme, you can still shave dollars in other ways. Don't care about ESPN? Drop to Sling's $25 Blue package. Don't care about seeing CBS live? Save another $6. Don't care about live TV at all? Get Hulu's day-after content and save $22 from what you'd spend on Vue. Don't care about current seasons? Netflix or Amazon gets you old seasons plus a catalog of movies. Hell, you might already have Amazon Prime for the other benefits it provides, so it may be no added cost at all.
And now that our Internet isn't packaged with our content, we can swap the Internet service out. 50Mbps is already 5x more bandwidth than we need for two 1080p streams (which is the most strain we put on our connection), so the moment a cheaper plan is offered by an ISP in our area (fingers crossed), we'll be shaving even more off our bill.

Re:So the news is that it still doesn't make good
This gets claimed all the time. Only, Sony isn't the publisher of the game, Hello Games is.
Sony only was one of the distributors of the game (besides Steam and Humble Bundle). They also did the PS4 marketing and as such may have imposed some things. So the real problem probably was that Sony needed a release date so they could plan their logistics (creation of discs, boxes, commercials), and Hello Games gave one (that they chose) that turned out to be months too early.

Re:Ultrahd?
Because the PlayStation is a games machine. Not a media machine.
Articles like this:

Re:Yeah.
And this is why I went for a rift. By all accounts the rift is more comfortable, more compatible, and slightly better image quality. 90% of the vive games I saw listed were obviously 30min tech demo gimmicks that i wouldnt want to play for any length of time, so I had no issue waiting for the rift's touch controllers to come out which to me seemed like much more suitable input methods for vr than wands (and from all the comparisons Ive see I was right).
I'm going to be getting a PS4, so I'm going to go for the PlayStation VR. I prefer the PS4 controllers to any other controller out there. I just can't get used to the offset sticks on the XBone. I also already have Move controllers, but I don't know if the ones for the PS3 will be compatible. I looked at the PlayStation VR FAQ, and it seems like they should be, but there's nothing specific there.
