You're so right! Because of your REAL freedoms, you can print these articles in your national [is there still a nation?] paper.

Maybe this explains it.
It says that 80% of the computers in China HAVE BEEN "touched". And here's a link that could explain why

But don't let this affect your consumerist activities, citizen. The government is already throwing up some "don't panic" propaganda.
"Asteroids regularly explode over the Earth with the intensity of a nuclear bomb; the explosions could be mistaken for a nuclear attack and even trigger an atomic war, an Air Force general said Thursday. - At least 30 times a year, a space rock measuring a few yards across slashes into the atmosphere and explodes, releasing energy equal to that of an atomic bomb, Air Force Brig. Gen. Simon Worden told subcommittee members."
Oh really? 30 times a year? This is the first I've ever heard about it.
Meanwhile, the powerbrokers in the know are quietly preparing to withdraw, (after killing all the jews and arabs), into their Shadow Government strongholds beneath whatever mountain range they think will save their asses from the end of the world. Silly rabbits!
Okay, that's my two cents. You may now return to Quake or whatever. Cheers!

Re:won't replace TV
I managed to get web news on 11 Sept. It was Pravda . The Russian pages had something, I could figure out "757" and "WTC" in Cyrillic. The English page was from 10 Sept. So far as I can tell, it hasn't changed since.

Re:Hypocritical? Americans? NO WAY!!
If Russian gave a shit, why don't they stand up and say something? I don't see ANY mention of ANY Russians officials who are upset about the US hacking into their systems. In face, WTF is as "foreign computer network" anyways?
I'm just guessing, but I'd say you've been watching CNN, and feel justfied in asserting that the Russians aren't saying anything about the situation because an American television network hasn't seen fit to report it. Seeing as how news reporting is never biased towards the views of the nation it represents, that's just fine...
Picking up a Pravda before deciding just how upset the Russians are about the situation would probably be a good idea.

Re:Gov is owned by Corporate America so...its WRON
As I get older, I continue to become more pragmatic - but I refuse to give up all my idealism. But in this last presidential (I refuse to capitalize it for our current office holder) election, it was very, very, very, very obvious that junior was, is and always will be an utter moron . Thus it was clear that I needed to vote for Gore to keep braino out of the White House. Unfortunately, junior and his family are as crooked as they are stupid. But normally I will vote based on my conscience AND on what my research tells me. Party be damned - I'm unafilliated.

A NEW WAY TO PRODUCE ENERGY DISCOVERED BY RUSSIAN SCIENTISTS. USING NUCLEAR FUEL, GAS, OIL AND COAL CAN BE REFUSED
Russian scientists have made a sensational discovery. Some fundamental investigations realized by them could entail a real revolution on the field of industry and power engineering and allow to make series of new inventions.
Traditional ways of producing energy are becoming now unworkable. Completely new materials and technologies are being created. In particular, it is possible today to build so-called airborne vehicles of non- supported moving, like UFO...
According to the Russian Academy of Science member, Doctor of Technics Valeri Sobolev, a special electrochemical process has been discovered - "exhausting process" - which results in appearing high- temperature materials in a new condition". Therefore a new condition of a material, a new power source and a new superconducting matter have been received and magnetic charge has been discovered.
Scientists are intending now to work out completely new current sources for domestic and industry aims, which could continuously produce energy without using any kinds of fuel. It would allow to renounce using nuclear fuel, gas, oil and coal. Environment's condition could be bettered too. On the basis of "exhausting process" new ultrastrong materials are supposed to be created, which could be used in producing cars, planes and rockets. Metals and other constructing materials could be replaced with them.
The group of scientists has already sent a letter addressed to the Russian President, which informs about their discoveries. Now is the state's turn to give a government contractual work.

Re:Pinochet...?
There are always people who admire strength. Today in Russia there are still people who admire Stalin. In a recent opinion poll (try google cache) 9 percent of Russians list Stalin as their favorite politition. And 28 percent think he was useful for Russia.

What's the problem? It's not a worry for the US. Americans can look at the rest of the world without any real obstacles. Even at the depths of the Cold War, you could subscribe to Soviet Life or find the Great Soviet Encyclopaedia in major libraries. Today, you can read Pravda or Al-Jazeera (which you can get translated.)
The parts of the world with heavily censored media (which includes China and most of the Arab world) are the ones scared of the Internet. With good reason; they have governments that need a totally ignorant population to survive. In time, the people there will sort out the blithering from the reality.
In the US, we have spin control in the major media, but almost everything important gets reported somewhere.
The Friedman article grumbles that anti-Israel propaganda is getting a forum. But pro-Israel propaganda has a forum too. Quit complaining.
-
PravdaIt's a real problem that you now have to read Pravda to find out what the American press isn't reporting.
Today in Pravda: Some US troops have landed in Iraq, near the Turkish border. Reportedly they're supposed to stir up opposition to Saddam Hussein. This report may or may not turn out to be correct, but it's not even mentioned in the US press. If true, it's an act of war, of course.

Re:It's not so much the news on the net that is go
Though I recognize it has some flaws inherent to its nature (which have been pointed out within the body of this discussion, such as accuracy) I prefer the net' to the medium of television for my news. One of the reasons is as you have mentioned simple perspectives, you can really get a better picture of what's going on by checking an event through foreign news agencies. (I often check Pravad as they have consistently have beat the Western media for updates on what the U.S. is doing in the Mid East.) Also 'alternative' news sites such as Slashdot offer refreshing takes and discussion on stories that the big media for whatever reason doesn't see fit to examine. (I also personally like to check out Guerrillanews for alternative viewpoints and discussion.)
Disinformation will always be a problem with a medium like the internet. It is important people for one thing check up on their sources. When a fact is shown to be untrue look for those sites which print retractions; and more importantly those that don't. Doing this you'll get a better idea of who you can trust.
It is important as well that people have an idea of what is being presented as fact, opinion, or conjecture. Otherwise they become the disseminators of Disinformation... -

Re:Is this a big story in Russia?
Here's a link to an article from Pravda.
The title says it all: "AMERICAN COMPUTER MEN STAND UP FOR A RUSSIAN PROGRAMMER DMITRY SKLYAROV".
What's interesting is that this story is more about our reaction to the story than about Dmitry himself.
Perhaps someone else can do some more digging for other stories.

Re:who watches TV anymore?People now can become completely disconnected from reality because there is always a 'news' publisher/broadcaster who is willing to cater to the whims ofthat customer.[snip] where previously we only had the option to choose rose colored glasses, or not.
That's a bit pessimistic. I like the greater access. I take it upon myself to read many more sources for my news so I can get a broader understanding. Especially I like to read foreign newspapers online. Like the Times of India or Inside China Today or the BBC or Pravda. For those of us who were tired of the same old sources, its a real revolution in current events knowledge. All these are in English. It's awsome. For more check out Yahoo's list of foreign papers.
Now the population at large has the 'opportunity' to suffer from what the Romans called the Imperial Diease, the condition of becoming acustomed to having every desire fulfilled, every whim satisfied and every gross pleasure gratified.
As with anything, there will be abuses and I agree with you that many will take that road. But I think the trade off of having more perspectives is worth it.

The Russians on Mir: It's all a conspiracy....This is a long lament on the universality of foolish politicians.
The Russian Duma, being of a significantly more nationalist and less realistic bent than the Kremlin, is continually attempting to ignore reality with respect to their space program. Check the link at http://www.nasawatch.com to Pravda, where an official communication of the Duma has already asked for the RASA (Russian Aeronautics and Space Administration) chief's head for allowing their station to go down.
Other interesting points to take away from their communique:
* They absolutely refuse to consider the possibility that they didn't have the money to keep Mir operational or even in a safe orbit.
* They already want a new station. Never mind that there were only four core modules built: The MIR core module, now half-melted in the South Pacific; the training module, sitting in Star City and needed for ISS training; the Zvezda service module (which is an updated MIR core module); and the mock-up, sitting in a museum (not sure which). Remember how much trouble getting Zvezda built was?
* Remember how like pulling teeth it was to get the money for Zvezda out of the *very same Duma*? They want the nationalism and prestige of a space program, but they don't want to pay for it. They want to pay for MIR 2 by "letting the Americans pay our share of ISS costs". Let's think about this a second... we just found out that *we* are overbudget, we are stretching *our* contribution out to who knows when (2007 for completion now? 2008?), and they want us to pay their whole share, so they can throw up a competing station? On what planet do these people think they are living on?
* They are concerned about insane things like "we can't use the ISS for military purposes". (Exactly how did they use Mir for military purposes? Skylab? Salyut? Spy satellites and commsats are *so* much more cost efficient for military use that this isn't even funny.)
The general Russian thought on ISS comes down to something like this:
RUSSIAN DUMA: What happen?
RUSSIAN MISSION CONTROL: Someone set up us the re-entry!
RUSSIAN MISSION CONTROL: We get signal from Houston.
RUSSIAN DUMA: What!
RUSSIAN MISSION CONTROL: Main screen turn on.
AMERICAN MISSION CONTROL: How are you gentlemen!!
AMERICAN MISSION CONTROL: All your space stations are belong to us.
RUSSIAN DUMA: What you say??
AMERICAN MISSION CONTROL: You are on the path to insignificance.
AMERICAN MISSION CONTROL: You have no chance to economically recover make your time.
RUSSIAN DUMA: Take off every 'MIR 2'.
RUSSIAN DUMA: You know what you doing.
RUSSIAN DUMA: Move 'MIR 2' for great justice.
This is so close to the typical Duma member's thought patterns that I can't decide if it's funny or not....

Allen Bryan,

Canadian Media Tax
We've had this in Canada since last year, and it really hasn't made any difference.Heh. Yeah, right. Tell that to Sheila Copps, the bitch who helped to put it in place. It's to help more inept musicians saturate Canada's airwaves, while talented Canadian musicians - who will prosper on their own without government help - promptly pick up and move to greener pastures in the United States.
(See Alanis Morrissette, The Barenaked Ladies, Crash Test Dummies, Big Sugar, Maestro Fres Wes, SoulDecision, Choclair, Celine Dion, Sloan,
... Paul Anka?)Meanwhile, it's yet another tax to help to "level the playing field" so that the untalented can saturate our airwaves. To, effectively, make up for the lesser talent and ability of, for example, The Tragically Hip.
I hope Sheila Copps gets inoperable colon cancer.
However, I think that the people that set the levy realised that corporations were only out to save themselves... or the people were vocal enough that the amount chosen was really small. If I'm paying a tax that is auspiciously because I'm going to illegally copy something anyway, haven't I then paid for the right to copy it? Haven't I now paid the royalties that I owe, in order to make all the guilt-free CDs, for me and my friends, that I want to make? I think that could be a very interesting court challenge.
In any event, I would consider us lucky.Oh yeah. Any luckier, and the Sunday afternoon tradition in Canada will be cutting up last week's Pravda for toilet paper.
