Re:Debunked?
It was deleted because people were using it to harass people in the real world, some users were even making up stories about unrelated restuarants and posting child pornography to go with those stories.
Not quite true. People there weren't harassing people, nor were they doxing them. There was a non-doxing/harassment rule like on most subs. What's interesting is that members of the
/r/pizzagate mod team have claimed that the administration were unbanning people, who were being banned by the subs mods. Those people who were being banned included those who were doxing, and posting CP. On top of this, that subreddit had already broken open a massive CP ring on twitter. Last count ~7000(I've seen numbers as high at 14k) or more accounts. Twitter's response so far has been to ban the people who found the accounts. Some of those CP accounts have been banned but most have not. This entire thing stinks. On top of that with Spez deciding to pull this bullshit, they've also likely lost their safe harbor provisions. On top of that, toss in the absolutely weird shit in the podesta emails, including wording that seems to indicate some kind of pedophile stuff going on? They may have found something, they might not have. But reddit turning around and banning the sub is going to toss more fuel on the fire.

Very serious
What makes this even more alarming is that in countries that don't have freedom of speech, such as the UK, users have been arrested and fined for reddit posts, so spez could pretty much get UK users jailed at will if he's this irresponsible and reckless. Perhaps if a mod of r/the_donald were muslim (unlikely, I know) and spez fabricated user insults towards them, this could be perceived as "Islamophobic", and they could be hauled away by police.

Re:So...
but I'm baffled where all the Trump supporters came from.
There are a few different groups. Lets get the KKK, Nationalists, etc out of the way. Yes they voted for him (Like they would have voted for Clinton) but their numbers are so small they're really not worth discussing on a national scale.
In the Midwest:
In large part it's blue collar salt of the earth people in the middle. Come out and visit 'us'. (I didn't vote trump but my state and county did). If you make a joke about flyover country you'll probably get punched the 10th time you say it. Most of the people out here are the nicest people you'll meet. If you ever needed anything (Flat tire, etc) they'll be the first to stop and lend a hand. Everyone has had a job that was affected by NAFTA. (Real or perceived, most people think they were affected by NAFTA)
50% of household earning less than $35k don't have Internet. Some townships are on Dialup alone. [Despite having our tax money go to help fix that]. Our infastructure is literally falling apart around us. We don't have enough population in any single county to warrant people paying attention to us. When it comes to 'social' issues most of us are "I don't see it I don't care". When asked where a transgendered person pees it's probably in the woods like everyone else. But we really, really hate being dictated to about 'how it is' from the coasts.
Some of us tried the high road, my county went very Bernie in the primaries. Polls had both WI and MI completely wrong. We saw Bernie as the democratic way to 'make america great again' and were told, literally, "You aren't needed in November" despite filling stadiums and waiting in lines to see Sanders.
Republican votes per county have held flat 2008-2012-2016. Jill stein saw a 'huge' jump between 2012-2016. And Democratic voters more or less just stayed home.
The second group is a bit more entertaining to watch:
It's
/r/The_Donald. It's the angry, contrarian young male vote. It seems to be a melting pot of RedPill, 4Chan, and a bunch of other places that demographic hangs out, online equivalent of a bag of cats.Milo Yiannopoulos seemed to gain a lot of traction and followers out of the GamerGate. They have less in common other than they really really hate the "SJW" type and saw trump as the anti PC candidate. I'm fascinated by people watching so I've dug through some profiles. Most are just 18-25 year old males that feel something about Obama or Clinton gave them the short end of the stick.
The recruiting techniques are pretty much follow gang recruiting techniques that have been used for centuries and are used now to radicalize people for ISIS. "Did those people wrong you? It's this persons fault. Join us and we'll "fix" it".
Beyond that there's really nothing that binds them. (Other than some don't know how to create new Reddit Profiles).

Re:So...
Most of my friends are die-hard Republicans, but I don't know a single person who (admitted) voting for Trump. I suspect that's because this election wasn't really fought along typical Republican vs Democrat, leftie vs rightie lines.
And that's exactly what it is. You'll find people from both sides of the isle voted for Trump because of what Hillary stood for. The reality is there was more support for Trump because he wasn't establishment, she was. They feel that the current state of government doesn't represent the people. That's why he had the support. The media is at a loss, and still hasn't learned anything from it though.
A lot of people like myself, who are or were heavily invested in politics saw this coming. This has been building for ~20 odd years, and it's very close to reaching the full-on shoot politicians in the streets. The Tea Party stuff was a warning sign, just like AfD, FN, and so on are warning signs. The media refused to listen, the politicians refused to listen. In the end Trump is far less extreme then the next candidate would have been. Just like Le Pen is, just like Frauke Petry is.
I also think there are a lot of people who are in the "I would never vote for Trump" crowd, because they don't want to be associated with some of his more bizarre stances, who secretly voted for Trump when no one was looking.
It's more likely they don't want to be targeted or attacked. You can seem multiple cases of that all over the US. Unlike the people who claimed "Trump supporters" attacked them. Those people who made the claims are being charged with filing false police reports. Off the top of my head, I can think of fake rape, fake assaults, fake vandalism, fake flyers, fake deportation letters, fake claims of harassment and mugging.

Re:never gave them credit card number
What's this "your data" thing? AFAICT we're talking about peoples' game identity, right?
We're talking about peoples' Google accounts , which includes their Gmail, Google Wallet, files stored in Google Drive, all apps they've purchased, and any other Google services they might use. Everything is all under one login these days; they don't just wipe out your Candy Crush points, you get locked out of everything. One of my coworkers had his entire Google account shut down because of false copyright claims on a video he uploaded to YouTube. That's not a unique situation at all, getting violations on your YouTube account will often result in losing everything else.

Re: Finally
Even if we were further ahead in AI development the Singularity nuts are obnoxious.
We are still at a point where no single human keeps track of every technological and scientific advance that is made. There will be no Singularity in the sense that they think and a gradual movement to more and more discoveries being AI assisted won't be noticeable for anyone. As for your complaining about "doom and gloom" of jobs lost to automation I don't see why you think it gloomy.
It was expected during the Industrialization, the entire Communist movement was thought up as a solution to it.
Now we know that a major shift like that can't be done while there still is manual labor that needs to be done so we have other methods to incorporated it into the typical capitalist/socialist hybrid systems most nations are.
Sure, there are people who claim that UBI can't be easily implemented but they typically make the false assumption that UBI has to be large enough for people to live on. That is untrue.
UBI should strive for offsetting the value created by automation. As more man hours is replaced by automation UBI will have to rise so that more people can sustain themselves on a part time work.Slashdot has really gone downhill. People need to stop looking at advancements as something bad.

Re:Mainstream media DOES invent news
You just pick the lies you want to believe.
You mean like Twitter is targeting everyone for "hate speech." When there are examples that it isn't the case.
-
Re:Mainstream media DOES invent news
Funny that, because many times Breitbart has more objectivity and ethics then oh Huffpo. Or CBS, NBC or ABC. Far more then buzzfeed for sure. Remember those DNC leaked emails? You know the ones, where reporters were sending stuff directly to the DNC for approval. Or where the DNC and reporters were so chummy that they could get things removed from articles if it would look bad. Or the media and the DNC hosting fundraisers? You don't? Well that's okay. This is only a small sample. After all, with CNN telling you that looking at wikileaks is illegal, you should listen to them right? After all, dig through those leaked emails and you find that USAToday, WAPO, NBC, CBS, NPR, ABC, NYTimes, Politico and several others have all had reporters so chummy that they could get things removed. Or they were openly publishing direct DNC talking points.
If you don't see this whole "fake news" thing as an attempt by those who lost the election, to turn around and create media echo-chambers where only those who toe the line is allowed. You haven't paid any attention at all to what just happened.

Re:4425*850=4 million pounds of satellite
There are some issues with these calculations.
1) The per pound price:
- The prices you used are per kilogram, not per pound
- The prices do not take into account the first stage reusability that will presumably become standard by the time the sats are launched
- If we use the Falcon Heavy costs with reusability (e.g. from here) we get $50mil/(0.7*119930) = about $600 per pound.
- The $600 price per pound includes the SpaceX profit margin. If that is not taken into account the price would be even lower.2) SpaceX will first launch only 1600 sats to make the system operational. From then on the future expansion can be funded by the operational profits.
Given the above calculations, the launch prices for getting the system to work will be 1600*850*600 = $816 million
That is well within the SpaceX financial capabilities. Now, the above assumes that the FH launches of the sats would be mass limited, rather than volume limited. I suspect that in reality they would be volume limited, however, thus the price would be higher. In any case it would be much lower than your original estimate.

Re:Does not follow?
> In what world does "civic society" equate to "white nationalist identity?"
In the world of the alt-right.
In an interview with Mother Jones Bannon declared Breitbart the "platform for the alt-right,"
Here's how the alt-right describe themselves on their official welcome page on reddit:
The Alt Right is a racial movement and has always been a racial movement. Race is at the very core of the alt right and there is absolutely no way to be alt right without discussing racial realism, especially from a white perspective. The mainstream media was not lying to you when they said we are full of white nationalists, racial realists, and fascists. That is what we are and we really do not give a shit about tax cuts or other policy issues.
The man is proud to embrace the alt-right. Ignoring that context is ignoring the message he's explicitly delivering. The guy is just civilized enough to avoid using slurs in public. That doesn't make him any less of a racist.

Re:Special program
The prob reddit had was about 50% of r/all was all 'r/the_donald'. It was dominating the rest of the website.
Then CTR entered the picture. It became a huge battle between the two. Reddit decided to help the CRT people out. They basically banished the_donald to pretty much their own section. They literally hid them off r/all so no one could see them at all. The_donald people noticed. They went from fairly regular people coming in and having fun, to a falling off the cliff. Basically reddit was totally fine with the_donald in the primaries when 'pied piper' was going on. Then once the real thing hit they misunderstood what they had created and it had taken over their site.
Reddit then banned the_donald from cross posting on r/politics (CRTs playground). They called it harassment. Yet reddit let CTR on the_donald without any repercussions. Just mentioning what CTR was doing was grounds for a banning from most areas in reddit. CTR dudes had hundreds of sockpuppet accounts to ensure they had plenty of downvotes to make sure stories that did manage to get past the alg where properly suppressed. They had plenty of talking points and bits to cut and paste from. They got so bad many times they would forget they posted and repost their own things or even reply to themselves. Mid last week it became clear that something had changed in CTR. The typical 4000-5000 downvotes every story got were suddenly gone. My guess is the funding got pulled and they stopped doing it.
At one point they went too far with the suppression and overflowed the downvote weighting they were applying to the_donald. Instead all posts on front page and r/all were the_donald for a few hours. Thousands of people who had no idea about the sub joined.
8chan and 4chan
/pol/ went bonkers early. They went all in and helped the_donald as much as they could. They tore apart all of those email leaks. There is some seriously interesting stuff in there. Once all the rhetoric dies down it should be a very interesting historical project for someone. It would also be interesting to see a day to day workings of how CTR worked. I doubt any other organization will be so open again.the_donald even had its own issues. There was at least 2 different attempts by people to monitize the community that had grown up there. One even by a fairly prominent trump supporter.
Now we can watch as one of the largest naturally created reddit subs ever withers and dies because 'they won'. r/politics can get back to its fairly normal default sub wacky self and bitch bernie sanders and ron paul didnt win.
I have been out of work this past summer (hey recruiters/employers please call back I am a fairly decent programmer). I did not post one item on that board but the shear fascination of the site I watched it from afar and just marveled at the political show. If you had just randomly stumbled into the_donald you would have been like 'wtf' is this crazy mess.
If you want a sample what that sub was like this current sticky is a good one and actually sums up the whole attitude of that sub. https://www.reddit.com/r/The_D... Then the comments. Very typical.

Re:It was a guy with a sign ...Excerpt from a first hand account
I'm a bit shaken still, but I wanted to get this out there: the crazy guy had a REPUBLICANS AGAINST TRUMP sign. He started shoving his way towards the front of the crowd. I was 3 people back from the front row and about 6 feet from this guy. He started to jump up and down and almost acting like a mosh pit.
He was pushing and shoving people. He knocked people over, including elderly. Children were right there, too. You see trump shade his eyes twice as he watches what is happening and doesn't acknowledge it until the guy gets so violent that some men tackle him.
This is when Trump made the comment about him being paid and to get him out. Many people fell over in the process. About 6 or more men restrained him, and in the process, one of those men got up and yelled that he had a gun. It took about 5 or 6 shouts before secret service heard and reacted.
...
For those of you making light of the fact there was no gun -- hindsight is 20/20, but I[n] that insane moment things went in slow motion and dozens if not hundreds of us were in fear. -

Re:There's more to come...
We don't know much about that police investigation yet and there's a lot going on so I will say I haven't looked too deeply into that one yet. One concern is that we do have certain people on video saying they've been busing groups in for 50 years and how that works is that they get voter registrations with fake credentials and bus people around to vote in all the places they're registered.
That said, your source was interesting and you could very well be right.
There's so much going on it's hard to keep track. There are also a lot of pedophile claims going on. The Todd & Claire thing against Julian Assange has been pretty thoroughly busted. All the profiles are fake, the "UN partner" bit was a sham and the address goes back to place lots of corps are registered (though the phone # shows a potentially coincidental link). The one against Trump is so bad even Jezebel doesn't quite believe it. There's also one against BIll, regarding flights on a convicted pedophile's "Lolita Express", including 5 flights without SS protection, but it's a fair point that tons of famous people flew on that guy's plane. Why they'd do that knowing he was a famous pedo with a private sex island, though, I do not know. Trump also had connections to the guy and rode the same plane, but that was well before he was convicted of pedophilia and the claims he kept sex slaves came out.
Finally, there's one more knife in Bernie's back in the Podesta dump. Make of this what you will:

Re:and yet...
I seem to remember the republican, close-minded conservatives throwing punches at Trump rallies attacking people who are just simply different and think differently than they do.
Actually, those were operatives paid by Democrat Super PACs to attend Trump rallies for the express purpose of inciting violence. Nobody was attacked because they were different.
I can provide 1000s of examples of violence from the conservative side in just a few minutes.
And yet failed to provide any.
Can you do the same of the liberals?
There's actually a subreddit for that.

You should have a look at RetroFuturism
They post a lot of old concept art for what the future would be like, including a lot of flying cars.
I don't think I have seen a single one of the Jetsons style people seem to think is the only valid form.
The Jetsons was intentionally silly, most flying car concepts looks like either modern helicopters or small planes. -
Re:$3000 BASE PRICE?!?!?
From the actual article -- "includes a 28" display with 13.5 million pixels at a 4500x3000 resolution"
The standard 4k resolution mentioned was a comparison, not part of the spec of the Surface. As for the price comparison, please add in the cost of a high-definition screen-based digitiser to the Apple iMac spec and get back to us. Oh, the iMacs don't have a built-in screen digitiser as an option? Oops.
Still a significantly less number of pixels than the 5k iMac.
And do we know the resolution of the digitizer? Does it actually meet or exceed the resolution of the display?
And I would bet that real graphics professionals will still want to use a dedicated graphics tablet, rather than get a bunch of hand-prints all over their screen to use a half-baked built-in digitizer.
Oh, and the price of a multi-touch digitizer for a 5k iMac? Howabout $200?
Now I have no idea how good that is; but considering the number of 4 and 5 star reviews on Amazon, I would bet that it is at least as good as the typical crap that MS has been building into their other Surface products, like the Surface Pro 4. Which is to say, not so wonderful. -
Re:As can complexity
Why the hell are permission issues with removable drives still a thing?
Because you need superuser permission to mount the drives, and you need to give the mount command flags to have a certain user be able to write to them (assuming it's a filesystem like FAT where no permissions exist). And some genius decided basically that permissions for everything should be written in Javascript. Yes, that's right. Javascript. Also, this post explains why these stupid abstractions are built to fail. You just need one program in the house of cards to be misconfigured and the whole thing comes crumbling down. That's why I stick to using the terminal, because it works. I'll manually mount my removable media and unmount it myself using sudo and give it the flags it needs (uid=1000), because that works and doesn't rely on 38984 abstractions. I don't use them personally, but I think it's also better to use a file manager that runs in the terminal (like Midnight Commander, for example).

Let's get the other journalists cleared as well
By all means, celebrate Amy Goodman's charges being dropped. But did you know there are many other journalists also facing charges for covering the pipeline resistance?
Two documentarians facing decades in prison.
Four Unicorn riot journalists facing charges in North Dakota and Iowa, and another was arrested on Saturday as part of the largest set of arrests in one incident to date.

Re:Snowden also did something illegal
Reddit, which is now a better investigative source than the NYT, has discovered Zulema Rodrigues was paid by Clinton's campaign, according to public FEC records, and we have video of her taking credit for shutting down Trump's Chicago rally. In addition, the SAME WOMAN, was responsible for shutting down an Arizona freeway during another Trump rally.
No evidence, if you ignore public records, videos of the paid woman bragging about it, and records of her being a problem at multiple Trump rallies. At this point you have been so overwhelmed with evidence you sound like an idiot for denying it. I just find it absolutely funny Reddit has become a better source of journalism than the NYT, with all the references available to anyone.
Tablizer is obviously one of Clinton's paid posters, because you would have to be paid at this point to still be here claiming there is no evidence.

Ireland here.
Have been experiencing sweeping DNS problems for the last 3 days. Eir(com), Ireland's main telecom developed DNS issues on Wednesday which rendered the internet unusable here for a lot of people.Reddit Ireland Thread from Wednesday night, has some technical details. It was a widespread issue.
Could just be an unrelated technical issue, but if I was going to pull something with DNS, I'd test it out on a small fish like Ireland first before I went on to the US.

Re:The story behind the story
I recommend you to study this even more closely, but here are some of the completely unbelievable things in this smear attempt against Assange:
"Their yellowpages site says they have been in business 5 years. http://www.yellowpages.com/hou...
Ok so how many times has this link been shared on reddit? I googled the URL specific to this site, and it's only come up three times. All within the last 24 hours.""This shady dating site claims to be the "ONLY Dating Site to ever partner with the UN Initiative" (Now that's fucking odd...) AND THEY JUST GOT KICKED OUT OF THE UN FIVE DAYS AGO?!?!"
"Todd Hammonds LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/to... (It's fucking nothing) But it does say he lives in SF. I'm in the Bay Area also, I could pay a visit to offices if we can actually find any legitimate offices...
Their Dating Site Eventbrite page. Only one event for the fastest growing dating website that has married 3,000 people since 2011???
Here is the LinkedIn of "Kate Hogan," this is the person who wrote the "Press Release" about ToddAndClare accusing Assange of sexual misconduct. https://www.linkedin.com/in/ka...
Of course she's got only 1 connection, and no other real information anywhere. Also, the phone number listed in the press release rings twice and then immediately disconnects. But it doesn't give a recording, it just says "call failed" I've never really experienced that. Anyway you'd think that someone who just put out a press release regarding the UN and Assange would have a working phone!
http://www.prweb.com/releases/...
Here's their bullshit subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/todda... (No posts in three months)
Here's their weird "book" that they wrote about starting their company 5 years ago. Notice how every review is exactly 189 days old and all are very short and positive. This is shilling no doubt about it. http://www.barnesandnoble.com/...""How can their site, registered 20 sep 2015, claim 3000 marriages by November 2 2015? http://m.imgur.com/6BqmZPY https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=..."
"Thanks to
/u/ChrissFinn for linking the email from Wikileaks that ToddAndClare originally sent to Assange to get all this started. They offer him $1 million dollars to do some sort of commercial. This is obviously a scam because they don't have a million dollars, they don't even have a legitimate mailing address or working fucking phone numbers! This was a set up from the very beginning!"" all users images are cropped and mirrored and can be reverse google image searched to other locations. Plus none of the employees seem to exist. Re:Obvious takeaway here?
They imply it only collects the public data available-- not the private data.
That's what they imply, but there is no shortage of schools demanding students' passwords, even misrepresenting the law to do so. When a student does hand over their passwords, you can bet they're plugged into these "threat intelligence" platforms to vacuum up every available bit of data. The surveillance apparatus is alive and well in today's schools.
