Re:Misuse of words

Editor Fail
Recently San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland unveiled a massive concerted effort to become the electric vehicle capitol of the United States.
Capitol is a proper name, originally of a temple and the hill it sat on, but now often of a building that serves as the seat of a legislature. Capital means the city that serves as the seat of government. It also means the chief city of a region, and is the metaphorical sense intended here.
Even if submitter didn't know the difference, a professional editor should have. Good thing we don't have any of those around here, huh?

Re:Yes
Oxdung. Those people gave at the urging of their bigoted, stupid, retarded church. Therefore the church is responsible.
Not under the law it isn't. And that's all that matters when we are dealing with legal issues.
It cannot be religious bigotry because I am an atheist.
It is impossible for an atheist to be bigoted, since bigotry emanates from religion.
Seriously? You ACTUALLY believe this? Ha ha ha ha ha!!! Wow! I had no idea I was dealing with someone so remarkably IGNORANT.
BIGOTRY You will notice that it has NOTHING to do with religion.
Someone who HATES people of faith for no other reason than they are people of faith is a religious bigot. Sound familiar? That's you. YOU ARE A BIGOT.
Many people of conscience and faith around the state of California voted for Proposition 8 because they disagreed with the idea of changing the definition of a traditional cultural institution to include homosexual unions.
FAR from religious people trying to force their views on Gays, it was the EXACT OPPOSITE: The Gays have been FOR YEARS trying to force THEIR worldview down the throats of people of faith and conscience. To FORCE people of faith to accept a lifestyle choice they find abhorrent. To FORCE them to teach their children that it is OK to live a life of (what people of faith think is,) perversion. That, and many MANY people voted for Prop 8 to send a message to the CA activist judiciary to back off and let DEMOCRACY take care of it, rather than trying to legislate from the bench. This was simply the people of California PROTECTING THEMSELVES and protecting democracy.
It's too bad you are too bigoted and prejudiced against people of faith to understand.
I'll leave you to your little hate fest now, you disgusting bigot.

Re:Replace to words and things become interesting
Interesting definition - especially if your replace to words in your sentence: Georgia quite obviously has no chance in Hell in fighting off Russia, they're not sovereign.
Well, didn't Russia just demonstrate that it has power over Georgia ?
So by your rationale: sovereign = mayor nuclear power and signing the "Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons" is signing your sovereign away.
It isn't my "rationale", it is the definition of the word "sovereignty". From dictionary.com:
"supreme and independent power or authority in government as possessed or claimed by a state or community."
"Complete independence and self-government."
"government free from external control"
-
Re:No.
I think you fail to understand the difference. The Imunity wasn't a free pass to say this was a good action. It was saying the government cohorsed you into doing this illegal action, as the government put pressure to do an illegal deed (AKA. Intrapment) they shouldn't need to suffer the legal reprocussions from it.
First of all, please use a dictionary. Second, it's not like these corporations can be tricked into doing something illegal. They have packs of lawyers roaming their halls who have been dealing with FISA cases for decades. They know the law better than the government does most likely. They knew what they were doing wasn't legal. They did it anyway.
Your traffic analogy is very flawed. Nobody is harmed by traffic being directed the wrong way as long as it is controlled by someone. Happens all the time when there is construction. It's more like a cop asking you to do something that you know is illegal, such as shooting someone. You know it's illegal, no matter what the cop says, and once you've done it, you can't take it back. Why would you do it?

Re:Misleading
For example doesn't the US also elect local sheriffs?
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=civics
civics
-noun (used with a singular verb)
the study or science of the privileges and obligations of citizens.
I would hope that all law enforcement would have a thorough knowledge of civics, particularly the privileges and rights of citizens. It is perhaps even more important than for legislators. If you have law enforcement and jury members/voters with solid understanding of civics, legislators ought not be too much of a problem. -
Re:Didn't work hereaftercataract
Main Entry: aftercataract
Tesseradecads
Pronunciation: -"kat-&-"rakt
Function: noun
: an opacity of the lens capsule that occurs following an operation for cataractA tesseradecad is an arrangement into groups of fourteen.
Symmetrical arrangements of texts and genealogies into tesseradecads were common Jewish customs. One example is the genealogy of Jesus Christ in the book of Luke and in the book of Matthew. Some names have been omitted in order to create tesseradecads in both genoalogies.
Matthew genealogyAftercataracts for the win.

Sure, it's not one supercomputer, but it still does more calculations for one purpose than any other single supercomputer can.
................ Modern computers can compute around gigaFLOPS (I think), and supercomputer are teraFLOPS -- thats about 10^9 for usual computers and supercomputers are around 10^13 (someone please correct me, I know I've made a mistake somehwere there...)
Yes I'm surprised to say that no one here -- coinsidering we're all nerds who suppoedly read -- had worried at the chance of a Digital Fortress TRANSLTR-type supercomputer.. -
Re:Pointless...
You're confusing agnostic and atheist.
What is someone who isn't a theist? An agnostic?
It's really ridiculous that people insist that someone who "isn't a theist" - can also be someone who "isn't an atheist". There are many many many christians who willingly say they do accept that knowledge is limited to experience, and that they do not know all the answers. This is where faith comes in, and this is where people like you actually look up the definition of what an agnostic person is.
Now how about you tell me who someone who doesn't believe in a higher being aka lack of belief in is?
I also want to refer to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic_theismand http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic_atheism. I'm sorry, but it frustrates me that people still insist in this stuff. I'm not talking about knowledge people, I'm talking about belief!

Re:How can this happen?
You might not consider an ugly truth defamatory, but dictionary.com doesn't agree. If it injures your reputation, it's defamatory, even if (especially if) it's true. And, alas, in some parts of the world, that's more important than the truth. If you find it hard to live with, I suggest that you stay well away from places that think that way.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/creationist
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creationist
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/creationism
Look, I respect people who are at least smart enough to realise "hey, the world is more then 6000 years old"... well about as much as I respect anyone who doesn't believe in orbital teapots... however calling yourself a creationist is:
A: Inaccurate
B: Providing a protectionary blanket to idiots
C: A lack of knowledge on the term
Creationists believe the bible literally... 6k years. If they believe otherwise, they're not a creationist. Same for ID, fundamentalist, or whatever other group of people who have decided to worship a fake book instead of understanding the world around them.
I agree with his "Lumping of all creationists" in this matter because it's accurate. Just like you could lump all bipeds together because they walk on two legs. It's in the definition.
Congradulations, you're not a creationist. As such we welcome you back to the sane majority of the planet (Or minority if you're in America). Glad to have you back.
I'm really looking forward to the day when the sane faithful rise up against the ignorance of those who have chosen to worship a book opposed to understanding the world their god created. -

Cannon
instead of having to rewrite cannon, you can create new cannon
So, are we talking photon cannons or did you mean the kind of canon that doesn't blow things up?
;)
I don't like playing Grammar Gestapo, but you used it twice and while it probably won't impact your life in any significant way... you never know. :) -
"Its eventual hitting of the moon's surface"?
Are you looking for the phrase "impact on"? Maybe "collision with"? Or even "hit on"? There are a plethora of choices...

Re:How relevant is it now?
Selfishness, by definition, is pursuing your own happiness to ends which are a detriment of others.
Bullshit. That's honestly the stupidest fucking thing I've heard in months. Show me the definition of "selfish" that requires you to do harm to other people.
It's not in the definition Merriam Webster uses. And it's not in Wiktionary's definition. And it's not in the definition at reference.com.
Seriously, how do you people come up with this bullshit? Fucking idiots.
If you're doing something to make yourself happy, you're being selfish. Whether it's altruistic or not.

Re:Greenland eh?
Stop trying to be pedantic. It's obnoxious when you're right, and you're not anyway.
"America" has been an acceptable shortened name for "The United States of America" for well over 200 years. On the other hand, I've never heard anyone collectively refer to North America and South America as "America", even though this too would probably be correct.
Words can have more than one meaning. Would you make the same argument about Australia?

I propose we foil the wet blankets, such as the parent, by referring to the singular as a "virius" instead of a "virus." These are the battles upon which the evolution of language is based!

russia of the nineties was the perfect example of pure libertarianism - even the government went private.
I don't know where you get your idea of libertarianism. I suggest you have a look here: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=libertarianism
Libertarianism is not anarchy, although some libertarians may advocate the idea of no government, I don't think that would be commonly regarded as a more "pure" libertarianism. In practice, the ideal of freedom of thought and speech requires constitutionally limited government. The government going private would more commonly be termed fascism.that guy you quote, who was afraid all the time, i suppose, he was a criminal.
A dangerous criminal no doubt. Probably had an unapproved opinion. Possibly even a religion.
only thing the soviet citizens back then were afraid of were american nukes.
Except the people being tortured in communist prisons for their religious or political views of course. Or those at risk of such abuse. Don't pretend it didn't happen, it's too late for that.

Not the Real Issue
The problem isn't that he is or isn't Muslim, but rather that it appears by all accounts that he was at least for a time raised Muslim, and then turned his back on the religion - an apostate, and the worst kind, according to the Christian Science Monitor, because he was "gifted by Allah" to be born a Muslim, and then renounced the religion. I think the real fear with if he is/was Muslim at any point during his life is if the Muslim community considers him an apostate, it could give them another reason to attack the U.S. if Obama is elected.

Re:Little new?
a true secure DRM
This is what we in the trade call "an oxymoron.
:)The best you can really do is obscure things as much as possible and hope that slows people down. The obvious problem there is that providing the source code doesn't help to obscure things. And if you don't provide source, about the only Linux vendor who's going to work with you is SCO, whose OpenLinux Server is not exactly flying off the shelves these days.
:)Something like TPM can help, but even there, the leading provider of TPM-based systesm (IBM) admits that it doesn't provide real security against people who have access to the hardware. TPM, despite all the paranoia about it, is really more reliable for locking people out than in. Enhanced Tripwire, yes; enhanced DRM, not so much.
Basically, DRM is snake-oil thats being sold to the big content producers. Open-source DRM would simply be inviting them to watch the snakes being squeezed.

Re:any evidence
My assumption was wrong. You are a troll.
In one post, you tried to redefine socialism just as I told you not to do, you ignore the clarification I gave you on the 'redistributive change' canard, and then you tell me to read a link that you never provided (and the link that I think you wanted to give me doesn't support your point, but rather mine).
If that's not the work of a troll, it's a sad commentary on how willful and blind ignorance can be.
-
Re:completely translucent
Completely translucent... you mean clear? Seriously, wtf is almost completely translucent?
Clear would be completely transparent. Completely translucent would almost be the opposite of clear. I'd say almost completely translucent would be something you could see through and maybe barely make out what was on the other side. translucent

I shouldn't even bother, but click here and "edumacate" yourself.
The Sherman act makes it a felony to commit antitrust violations.
I'm certain yourself, being 8, wouldn't understand how to operate a dictionary. It is hard, but I'm certain when you make it to grade 4 or 5 the teacher will re-explain them to you. As an adult, I'll link and quote it for you so you can understand.
Corporation: an invisible, intangible, artificial creation of the law existing as a voluntary chartered association of individuals that has most of the rights and duties of natural persons but with perpetual existence and limited liability
I do suggest being a bit less petulant in the future, as I can assure you, when you hit double-digit years it won't work nearly as well for you as it did today.

Re:Yeah, yeah OT, I know ...
Funny, because dictionary.com tells us that amongst is a "Chiefly British" alternate form of among. I mean, is it so hard to load up dictionary.com in your web browser before embarrassing yourself by demonstrating your ignorance?
Also, if you're Roman Catholic, you probably are aware that the Hail Mary prayer contains "amongst" in most versions that are taught: "Blessed art thou amongst women..." Yes, it's archaic English, but "amongst" is still used in the UK, similar to "whilst."

Re:Afghanistan in Perspective
$800 billion to shore up the faltering American economy is a drop in the bucket. Look up the numbers sometime.
Howzabout now? Here are the numbers: $5.63 trillion in debt held by the public in 2008; we just authorized an additional 0.8 trillion, or 14% additional debt.
drop in the bucket: A small, usually inadequate amount in relation to what is needed or requested.
14% is neither "small" nor "inadequate"; the word "obscene" comes to mind, though, and it's exactly "what was requested" by the Bushites. So, no, by no stretch of the imagination was this a "drop in the bucket".
All this ludicrous deficit spending even though we have yet to even begin a recession (despite three years of intense politically-motivated media cheerleading).
I'm canadian and we have neither problem with our heavily regulated banking industry.
And the United States wins again - Paulson just used his $800,000,000,000 blank check to effectively buy the banking industry in the USA. And another industry succumbs to the growing socialist sentiment.
Jefferson's spin is undoubtedly approaching its relativistic limits.
Fortunately, having the federal government take over a sector of the economy guarantees its success. I mean, look how much better education has fared since Jimmy Carter created the Department of Education in the mid-1970's.

What's with people using the word nerd incorrectly?
He's a LOSER plain and simple, a geek at best.
To me, GEEK, means: fascinated by technology, completely clueless how it even works
NERD means: knows technology and how it works, useful to society and isn't locked in basement playing D&D (or WoW) all day, every day like GEEKS.
Although a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person. was found on a dictionary site... which nerd being stupid/irritating/ineffectual don't sound like a nerd to me. BUT this is because it's origin of the word, and the definition changed over time. -
