In the trenches, searching for MWSF answers...Jobs promises a fiscal year while not profitable, at least less suicide-inducing: "Where 2000 was a year of blackness and dispair, 2001 will be one of bleakness and dissapointment."

Privacy Illusion Cracked- Film At ElevenAs soon as you sign up, they begin collecting all kinds of re-saleable information: bidding history, HTTP REF, whether or not your circumcised- stuff like that. It's awful.

The real threat to society/culture...is the practice of using historical figures in fiction. TR in his days as chief of the NYPD in the Alienist was one thing, but Millerd Fillmore as a love-sick accountant? That's too far.
Carr is a new Puritan: if it seems beneficial and people like it, then it must be bad. TV's are everywhere- so, get rid of yours and tell everyone about it, endlessly. The Internet has revolutionized our culture, so for that reason alone it must be very, very bad.
I'm going to burn my computer to prove how cool I am! Just watch me!

I want Hollywood what to do, what to thinkThey're all so super-smart, I'm beside myself with glee to think that my electronic devices will act on their behalf, to protect the sacred copyrights.
I vote the way Alec Baldwin tells me to vote.
If Rosie O'Donnel has an opinion on gun control or capital punishment, she must be right- she's so real- don't you think?
Listen, people. You don't become rich and famous by accident. Even Andy Dick is filled to the brim with intellectual prowice.
And if you don't believe me, read this.

Re:A.C. Clarke to "Milk This Crap For All It's WorObviously you do think it warranted a response since you did just that.
And who is "we?" Are you representing the
./ community or the various entities that reside in your alleged mind? -
A.C. Clarke to "Milk This Crap For All It's Worth"Arthur C. Clarke has a full schedule his novel's titular year. He'll rake in enough cash this year to buy a whole closet full of surongs.
The new commercial for Ford:
The David Bowman look-alike floats up to the monolith in his pod. SFX: breathing.
"My God
... it's full of cars."Voice Over: "That's right! We're clearing out the over-stock for the 2002's!"

LinuxPPC Lite? Are there plans to release a distro of LinuxPPC specifically suited for PPC users left behind by Apple and OSX? Most desktop users are put off by a default kitchen-sink install. It seems that with those services turned off, maintenance and operation is a bit more friendly to Unix newbies.

Sprint changing the world through its TOSIn essence, the TOS says, "Don't be mean."
If only we could get a TOS to change everything, to regulate (and therefor make "nice") every possible aspect of our lives...
If we forbid mean speech, we can eliminate it in the way we have eliminated drug use by making it illegal.

Gamespot editorial board transcriptHack #1: We need to generate hits and revenue
Failed Novelist: True. Baby does need new booties.
Hack #2: What about a feature on the poor quality of game software? Drivers, patches, 3d cards, it's all falling apart.
Failed Novelist: That would require actual reporting skills.
Hack #1: What about another crappy top 10 list?
Hack #2: People love that. It generates rancor, churns the boards and generally boosts hits.
Failed Novelist: Yeah, people are stupid.
ALL: Agreed. -
Top 10 Most Ridiculous and Irrelevent Top 10 ListsBelieve it or not the PC Game list didn't even make our list.
Our list did warrent listing itself- don't think about it too much, it will hurt your brain.

New web host for Mass. software firm...You wonder if it was just one outage too many...
"I'm sorry, it seems that someone who shares the mySQL server with you sent a bad query that brought down the whole thing."
[sound effects of various guns cocking] "Okay. Well, let me know as soon as we're back up. We have a business to run, you know."

Advice for Nintendo: everyone regrets buying segaEvery time I buy a Sega I regret it in the end.
It may be a good company, maybe better than the available options. Their ROI may seem very attractive. But lack of support and poor marketing will make you regret buying them. I just know it.
I'll keep playing those dozen or so extant Dreamcast titles (the ones in English) until they burn a hole in my TV.

shoplifting as a hate crime? If stealing music is a crime, then stealing offensive music ($globally_offensive=racist) must be really illegal.
Sounds like someone's trying to get their case for shutting down Napster on the evening news.

Weapons of Mass _Distraction_Husein must be stopped! He's going to airlift those puppies to kids on Christmas thereby accompishing two goals: endearing himself to America's youth and dulling the minds of young men who would be called upon to fight him in a few years.
Clever bastard!

what? :> Pick up the sword.
Ok. :> Kill the viking near the door.
Don't be hasty. :> Use the sword to lop off the viking's head.
Ok.
His head lies in a pool of blood on the floor.
You'll never make it to Valhala at this rate.
I hope you're happy. -
what exists on VCD that makes you want it?I can only think of a few movis (LOTR was one) released on VCD and they looked like mung.
The video quality on high-action sequences was inferior even to VHS.
And it's my understanding that VCD is a very specific format. You can't just toss an MPEG-1 file on a CD-ROM and expect it to run.
So, why does anyone still care about VCD?

Other uses for Nutec's new box...
- Surfing the Brittney Spears chatrooms on AOL
- Calculating the precise air speed velocity of an unlaiden swallow (both Afrian and European)
- Counting votes in Florida
- OSX (you need that kind of power to push those pretty windows around)
Are there Voodoo3 drivers for this thing yet?

Sponsored WinME Dialog BoxesThis Invalid Page Fault brought to you by Retrospect backup utilities. You did backup recently, didn't you?
Hats off to

Shoplifting isn't likely to credibly challenge...traditional distribution streams of copyrighted material either.
Relative to the total population, shoplifters make up a small percentage- like Napster users.

Patents and copyright-did the Daily Show screw us?You decide.

1 0It could be just a coincidence. Or it could be that a Viacom/Time Warner company just ate our lunch. Perhaps they can get away with it because they're backed by three hundred rabid lawyers. But it may be that they stole from us. Or not. You decide.

I'm an advocate for an end to language advocacyIt does a disservice to the entire programming community to pretend that one language is better than another just because you know it.
[php rulz]
Too often we reject a language or extension technology simply because of its source. This is unfortunate.
[asp sucks]
It's time to lower the rhetoric- and even the rhetoric rhetoric. Besides, can any gainfully employed programmer actually have time for that crap?

What else do you have to sell except the look?If you have no OSX (yet) and haven't had anything groundbreaking on the OS side for 15+ years, you're going to go after anyone who imitates your pretty pictures, your translucent candy-colored plastic.
Now that OSX is turning out to be a Benjamin fix (buy all new apps since Carbon is so slow), Apple may be getting desperate.

Perma-temps vs. open-source slaves...The way Microsoft has dealt with its staffing has been abominable.
But what can we make of the feudal system of open-source? Sure, it's a better way to make software. But a lot of great ideas go uncompensated.
Some get rich while others work their tails off for an ideal and make just enough to live- or nothing at all.

The hand that feeds me needs a vigorous biting.Intrusive advertising is supposed to be illegal, but the kind that keeps the lights on at sites like this one- even pop-up ads, those are okay. Right?
-
such tape formats have existed for years -D1 for example and another specific to government work. Both can record audio/video as well as data. As a video editor it's great because you can backup your media as well as your data as quick as lightning.
But if you want to spend slightly less than a hundred grand on a tape format that is essentially dead, you'll want something else.
DVC-PRO is becomming pupular (translation: cheap) in spite of its inferior compression algorhythm (read: flaimbait) it would be a nice candidate for such a solution.

Abandonware Definition...?Does it simply mean a product you can no longer buy for which support is no longer available?
In that case, half of my Mac software qualifies. Dammit! I paid full price for that crap.
How long until Dreamcast stuff fits the definition? Oh, wait. I don't own one- so it must not.

PS2 and SONY's promised featuresMuch hay has been made about the PS2 not playing MP3s.
But there are many other problems, features Sony promised that never made the final product.
Although the PS2 does toast bread, it does not do so evenly. And often crumbs become stuck in the heat sink, causing over-toasting.
Even if you are at sea, the PS2 cannot officiate a wedding ceremony.
keep repeating that until the shaking stops

KDE is proof that GUIs will always suck...We have a chance to re-work the very idea of a window manager/application platform and what GUI do we use? KDE- designed with a look at feel suspiciously close to Win9x. START menu anyone? And GNOME is just as bad- even slower than KDE on my machine.
We say we want to revolutionize the user experience, but when it comes right down to it, we're out of ideas.
It's time to face up to the truth here. We (and by that I mean all of us) have failed as developers and consumers of application platforms.

Sure...we want to avoid a panic...sure...1) Sattelites bought on the cheap from the military. 2) Cell phones are reputed to cause cancer.
Who needs SDI when you have a space-based cancer weapon? It works something like the sattelite laser from Real Genius only much, much slower.
