Re:Better and Better
- Firstly the tab extensions does not seem to be a supported extension. Now I've read often enough about how it is horrible and ugly and all, but I use it for everyday browsing. I'd really like the default to be "open link in new tab" for just about everything with the middle mouse button set to "open link in this tab". The tab groups are also nice, but could be managed outside the standard tab extensions.
If you're referring to the Tabbrowser Extensions plugin, it works, and you can install it right here. It has been updated to work with the RC.
The only plugin that I so far I have not found an update to is the Googlebar.

Tabs
Tabbrowser extensions, to get the tabs reacting the way I want(i.e everything in the same browser window, middle mouse click on the tabbar opens an accidently closed tab).
And for browsing Slashdot, this kind of helps. -
Re:I have slightly more than 5 ideas.
This might just make your night. Sure it doesn't have all 11, but I believe it gets pretty close to 1, 4, 5, 6, 7. No idea why it never made it to the texturizer.

Re:Idea: save tabs before close/crash
Gonna point you to the ultimate tab browsing extension, Tabbrowser Extensions. It does what you want (if you let it), and also has an "undo closed tab" feature. That comes in pretty handy too. My favorite is the "send all new windows to tabs" feature.
Since I've posted this a couple of times, I feel obligated to say that I have no idea who the people are who made this extension, or why they don't put it at texturizer, but god bless 'em! -
Re:Tab focus...
User-definable delay isn't there, but I think that the Tab Browser Extensions does what you want, and quite a bit more.
It's fulfilled my wish for a single window browsing experience. -
Re:Smarter tab arrangement
See the Tabbrowser plugin. It does it via tab groups.
http://white.sakura.ne.jp/~piro/xul/_tabextensions .html.en#download
Also read the features. It has just about everything you could want relating to tabs. Really.

Re:auto-update no worky - ?
If you cannot start installation, check the preference Enable software installation, in a preferences panel Preferences > Advanced > Software Installation.
Source:
http://white.sakura.ne.jp/~piro/xul/doc/installati on.html.en#install
And reset update settings bug:
http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=113895&cid=964 7983
Then Tools / Extensions, and click Update.
But I still do not know why from menu Tools/Settings/Advanced/Update Now - button it shows errors on Tabbrowser extensions, but from Tools/Extensions/Update -button it updated and installed new version of Tabbrowser extensions ok. Strange. -
Re:And this is why I still have to use Opera
TBE is now available for 0.9.1.
I'm using it on Moz 1.7 with no problems.
Find it at Extension Room or TBE home page. -
Tabbrowser extensionsTabbrowser extensions is a fantastic add-on to mozilla and firefox. Here are my favorite functions it provides:
1) You can rearrange tabs by just drag and drop.
2) If you ctrl-click a link, it can open as new tab next to the tab of the page your looking at.
3) Tabs can be in different colors, and tabs opened with e.g ctrl-click inherit the color from the tab of the page the link is on. I.e. you can group tabs by color
3) If you get too many tabs in a window, it can make a new row of tabs, or open a new browser window and continue making tabs there.
4) You can undo close tab. In multiple steps. -
Re:RadialContext
Add that to tabbrowser extensions, to get the tabs reacting the way I want(i.e everything in the same browser window, middle mouse click on the tabbar opens an accidently closed tab). And you almost have my perfect browser.
Now if only Sage would accept OPML properly, with the option of organizing all the RSS feeds within a given folder into a newspaper like format(Sort of like how feedDemon works) I would be in heaven. -
IE is more secure than firefox for the moment
I do like Firefox a lot. It is a wonderful browser, and it is improving at a rapid pace. But I will not use it until the devs get their heads out of their arses. It is not as secure as IE for one simple reaon: no javascript whitelisting. IE has it in the form of security zones.
If firefox ever adds jscript whitelisting to the main app or someone develops an extension for it (that is kept up to date with current releases) I will switch in an instant. Unfortunately I am getting the impression that the devs are very pro-jscript and have no interest in making it easy for users to browse with it off completely. Instead they want to only allow disabling it's most annoying and obvious features. This is a woefully inadequate solution.
With IE I can browse with javascript completely off while still being able to shop at sites like newegg or amazon with jscript (and activex if necessary) automatically enabled. There are many sites nowadays (created by incompetent web designers)that won't even load without javascript. I will either ignore such sites or take the chance on giving them temporary trusted or partially restricted status.
People talk about how insecure and dangerous ActiveX is and they're right, but javascript is almost as bad. IMO, anyone who surfs the internet with javascript on is asking for trouble and shouldn't be surprised when they find it. And, no,I am not talking about popups. Javascript is a hell of a lot more than just the window popup or resize functions. The recent slammer worm, while an example of an exploit of bad IE security in the form of BHOs is also an example of the dangers of javascript. This worm could not function without it and it did not rely on popups or resizing. It used javascript that would never be blocked by the kind of partial blocking that firefox uses.
Mozilla has also had security zone capability through user pref javascript settings for a long time, but a UI for it has never been included in the official browser. At this point it looks like it never will.
There was some effort expended at actually producing a UI for the zones but nothing seems to have come of it. The devs who were working on it gave up when they saw this which unfortunately is not capable of javascript whitelisting at least in current versions of mozilla or firefox.
There have been some attempts at extensions to add in jscript whitelisting to mozilla, but there is nothing that works with current versions of either mozilla or firefox.
All of this work is at least 1-2 years old. Some of it is as 3-4 years old. Nothing is currently being done with any of it. Obviously the devs don't consider it an important feature. In fact they consider it so unimportant that even when it's already in the code, they can't be bothered to make a UI for it it.
So thank you very much, but I will stick with a much safer browsing experience on IE with pwrtwks to give me two click security zone control and trust setter and IE Zone Editor to give me even more control over IE's wonderful security zone features.
For the one remaining gigantic IE annoyance, those popup "warning" windows you get when browsing with activeX turned off on sites with activeX, there is a way to turn them off. It works. -

Re:Firefox + Thunderbird = Mozilla?
When I installed Firefox
.9, I created a new profile and then copied my old bookmarks into the new profile's bookmark area (just replaced the new bookmarks.html with the old one). I then went to the TBE's Web site where I downloaded the latest release and have not had a problem with it at all. -

Re:Firefox + Thunderbird = Mozilla?
I'd doubt fiddling with those options would have any effect. I really have no idea about this at all, but a search on Google turns up this. It seems to be a direct reference to the bug, but since it's in japanese I have no idea if a fix is also provided. I'd suggest you pop off a message on the project's forum.

Re:BugMeNot days numbered?
Well, I must say I thought it would be easier. The quick, but un-user-friendly way is to go to about:config and set network.http.sendRefererHeader to 0. There's also the refspoof extension which should work. And if you use the TabBrowser extension, there's a menu (the context menu, or Tab...Tab Features) to block referer.

Re:Firefox and tabs
Tabbrowser Extensions is a great add-on to Mozilla/Firefox but it's just that--an add-on. When Firebird 0.7 was released, people were misled to believe that Firebird did not have tabbed browsing capabilities built into the browser and had to install TBE. TBE attaches itself deeply into the browser and as a result, it was often unstable when changes were made to the core of the browser. When Firefox 0.8 came out and people were still running their outdated versions of TBE that weren't updated for Fx0.8, they encountered the "No XBL Binding" error. The developers are avoiding this problem with 0.9 by automatically disabling all extensions and themes on the first run, requiring users to redownload and install compatible versions of their extensions/themes.
Firefox is a great browser and is constantly improving. Although the developers aren't implementing all of TBE's features due to fear of bloat, they are listening. We got the confirmation dialog for closing a window with multiple tabs and we may just see a single tabbed window option one day (first step = open external links in tabs, bug 172962 recently marked blocking1.0+ by Ben Goodger). -
Re:Very clean!
I want it to be able to save tab state out of the box, heh. The current versions all lock up with the old versions of the "Tabrowser Extensions" package. Sigh, I guess I will dig into some code today.
-
Re:You need a bigger "but" next time
I think the most telling thing about Goodger is that he absolutely hates TBE, probably the most popular extension out there, because it makes drastic alterations to the code, but he's made no effort to change Firefox so that TBE would be unnecessary.

Re:Examples of some sneakier popup methods
Tried this out. No pop-ups came through.
Of course, I am running Linux + Mozilla + Tabbrowser extensions. Also have flash blocked with the "click to play" add in.

Re:Pasting urls
Firefox and Konqueror should have a button for "Open the clipboard in a new tab".
Agreed. While not a perfect solution, Clipboard Observer may be a possible way of dealing with this. It can get really intrusive, though, because it can end up opening tabs when you're copying a link to paste somewhere else, like in e-mail or IM. Worth a try, though.
On an unrelated note, the same author also has Tabbrowser Extensions, basically some really, really, REALLY useful alterations to how Mozilla and Firefox handle tabs. With it, you can do things that should (IMHO) be in the codebase, like re-ordering tabs, moving tabs in groups, moving tabs between windows, opening duplicate tabs (complete with the tab's page history), and (my favorite) undoing the closing of a tab. I've been saved on a number of occasions by this last feature. Very handy. The author should be getting more recognition. -

Of course, there is that little "English" link there which leads straight to an English version of the technical document, but maybe you didn't want anyone to point that out? -

tab extensions
i love the tab extentions plugin. allows you to configure many things for tab. such as open new tab in homepage, and open javascript popup windows in tabs. etc...
really the most important (and for me, the only) plugin for firefox -

Re:Great
1. It's faster
You neglected to mention what OS you're talking about, but since you mentioned installing Firefox on the machines you administer, I'm going to assume you're talking about Windows. What about Linux? Are there any objective tests on this subject out there?
3. It has a hugely useful hotlist menu
(file transfers, personal notes, dictionary,
and finally links to newest slashdot articles)
Personally, I want my browser to be just a browser, which is partly why I switched from the Mozilla suite to Firefox back when it was called Phoenix. I'd rather have features like those you mentioned avaliable as extensions or something so as to avoid the feature creep that plagues so many software projects.
4. Tabbed browsing is 10x better
In what sense? Have you tried installing the Tabbrowser Extensions for Firefox? (If you want to complain about having to install a separate extension, see my previous point.)
6. Ultra customizable
Firefox is pretty darn customizable, too, with all the extensions available and the about:config page (though I freely admit that about:config isn't the most user-friendly way to configure things).
Actually, the one thing I really liked about Opera back in the day was something you didn't mention: mouse gesture support. Firefox can do this via the Mouse Gestures extension, but they don't work right in Linux with the right mouse button because of some issue with X Windows or something. Even when I used Firefox (then Firebird) in Windows, the mouse gesture support wasn't as good as that in Opera: in particular, the system wasn't as responsive to mouse gestures as it was with Opera, and gestures didn't work in certain places, such as over UI components and certain web page elements, something I'm sure is due to the fact that mouse gestures are implemented as a plugin in Mozilla/Firefox as opposed to being built-in as they are in Opera.
The things I like more about Firefox, though, include the fact that it's open source (I am one of those people to whom that matters; if it doesn't matter to you, tough beans) and the plethora of available extensions, especially Adblock, which has done wonders for my browsing experience.
Mike
P.S. Has anyone else noticed that Slashdot automatically changes multiple consecutive blank lines in posts into a single blank line? That's kind of annoying if you ask me... -
Save your Mozilla tabs (OT)
You can use Tab Browser Extentions to save your tab session, either on log off automatically, or manually. Be warned, there is some slightly weird menu placement, partially due to the fact that the author is not a native English speaker. I believe Opera does this automatically, with Nordic instead of Japanese authors.

Re:will it FUNCTION....
You don't specifically mention Mozilla, but assuming you are using it, you can install Tab Browser Extensions to enable/disable features for individual tabs.
-
Re:Solution for mozzy/firebird users
Also, you can block referer on a per-tab basis within the gui if you install the snazzy Tabbrowser Extensions xpi.
-
Re:Just translating may not be enough...Unfortunately MS fails to realize that simple translation may not be enough.
Uh, "...fails to realize...?" MS has been making internationalized and localized software for over a decade, maybe even two decades (when did the Chinese and Japanese versions of MS-DOS come out? Mid-80s, IIRC). I think they are well aware of what it takes.
Speaking of ruby text, did you know that Mozilla still doesn't support the standard HTML <RUBY> tag (unless you download and install a 3rd party extension). IE has supported it for quite some time.
Also, Office already has spelling and grammar checkers for other languages. The English version even comes with French, German, and Spanish proofing tools, and you can get it for many more languages.
No, MS is far ahead of open source products in terms of localization... they're just looking for more ways to get other people to do their work for them.

TabBrowser Extensions
i'm kind of surprised that no-one else has mentioned this, but Piro's excellent TabBrowser Extensions for Mozilla/Firebird/etc. includes this, as well as a ton of other options to greatly enhance tabbed browsing.
personally, i've yet to find a browser that compares to Firefox with AdBlock and TBE.

I know you've got it now, but for the benefit of those still having difficulties reaching texturizer.net, you can get the new Firefox-compatible TBE from its homepage, which is not slashdotted (yet).

Tabbrowser Extensions (version 1.10.2004020801)watch out if you use this extension - it doesn't seem to be compatible with 0.8 - i just had to reinstall fire-whatever after finding it wouldn't start. that was on a clean install with just this extension added. hopefully there'll be an update for Tabbrowser Extensions soon (the official extension page is offline atm due to traffic, i was using the the extension homepage).
Odd because it worked with the recent nightly build of firebird. Or am i doing something stupid and it should work? (very possible).

Re:Not just pop-ups
easy:
there is a plugin for Mozilla (regular and firebird) to transform flash objects into a button. If you press the button, the flash object is loaded. I've used it extensively on windows (I have some pb installing it on Linux).
Combine it with the best image blocker plugin and the tab plugin and you've got the best environment ever.

Re:Firebird
Galeon has tabs, and the little X to close a tab is conveniently located right on the tab itself. No other browser does this
The Tabbrowser Extensions extension provides this for Mozilla and Mozilla Firebird. -
Re:WRONG
doesn't think the mozilla tabbing is/was as good. Plus I like it that opera can resume from where I left off.
I can't think of any major Opera functionality that's missing from the Mozilla/Firebird Tabbrowser Extension plugin; it certainly does include the ability to resume from where you left off.
Just so you know. -
Re:My thoughts on Firebird
I've TRIED Firebird, and the tabbing just doesn't work right. Links that spawn a new window won't spawn a new tab instead (aargh!)
FWIW, Mozilla + tab browser extensions (apt-get install mozilla-tabextensions) lets you force new windows to open in a new tab instead IIRC. I haven't tried it with Firebird.
-
Re:My thoughts on Firebird
Get the TabBrowser extensions. Everything you could ever think of that you'd want tabs to do, these do it. And then some.
I also highly recommend the PrefBar add-on. -

Far-reaching implications.
It is pretty obvious to me that McBride is going for a "divide and conquer" type of strategm. I would like to remind everyone what the results will be if we don't keep ourselves together on this.

Re:And they say...
And that isn't just limited to america, either. this is a good example of what they're doing over in japan.
After seeing that, you'd think that the itch was effectively scratched. You'd be wrong.
