Ain't seen nothing yet: Germany is waiting for DSL
Try getting DSL or even ISDN in Berlin and quite possibly you're told to...move! And that's only the capital! The "best" part of Deutsche Telekom's "excuse" is that they "cannot" provide DSL over the (copper, twisted pair) subscriber lines because of fiber-optic connections between their exchanges - and as we all know the latter type of "wiring" is utterly unsuited for networking, or something...

Photoblogs as alternative outlets for pros
I don't know how new or groundbreaking photoblogs are for readers, but as a working professional photographer I find mine to be a valuable venue to try out experiments, or show personal work (in my case, really personal work), or just air pieces that I've done that clients might be too timid to publish. I think, just as "normal" blogs, they're probably an intermediate evolution in the publishing paradigm, a transition from editor-mediated publishing to a direct creator-consumer relationship. At the very least they represent a handy way to share my artist's sketchbook with readers who want something a little more "raw" and direct.
You can check mine out at dailysiege.com. Sorry, standard warnings: free reg. req., try bugmenot.com, and most definitely not safe for work, or for kiddies. -
Re:Hmm.
There's one saving grace: Verizon Suing Ralsky - resolved in October '92 (terms undisclosed, as always - hopefully, it's "do this again, we whack your little pee-pee"):
One of the nation's most prolific purveyors of unsolicited bulk e-mail, or "spam," has been barred from sending messages to Verizon Communications Inc.'s Internet customers under a legal settlement. The settlement, parts of which are secret, means that Verizon's 1.64 million Internet customers in 40 states will no longer receive spam from Alan Ralsky, whose Michigan-based company, Additional Benefits LLC, is considered one of the largest sources of bulk e-mail.
It's better than nothing and hopefully can be used as a precedent elsewhere. -
Re:"restores lost detail"?
Rumor has it Alpine violated GPL with their so-called "Bass Engine" technology.
Apparently, little more than obfuscated code from this open source project. -

Implants. Hmm.
I know this is going to start a huge discussion of religion in general, but if I can save one person's soul, it's worth it.
Read Revelation 13 and 14. Take your time - this is one of the most obscure bits of the Bible that is very hard to relate to real life.
Note what happens at 13:16 - financial transactions are now dependent on some sort of mark (implant?) on the right hand or forehead.
Skip forward to 14:9, and see what the third angel says. Anyone who takes the mark is out of reach of the salvation through Jesus that all those pesky evangelicals keep trying to push on you. That is your only bridge to eternal life in paradise burned.
Think about it when the time comes. I know that this particular article is about helping paralysis, and that's great. Just be aware of the danger. Imagine one of those annoying "Are you sure?" dialog boxes.
Note to moderators: I'd suggest "Troll", "Off-Topic" or "Flamebait", but the Great Commission compels me to write this...

Vote her out of office?I recall this part of America was still a democracy last time I checked... and while the "geek vote" alone may not make a difference, educating the public about the harm that over-zealous copyright protection has already done (on either side of the pond) certainly will.
BTW SaveCanadianLiberties.com (and friends) aren't taken yet AFAICS...

The screenshots of their configuration tool looks horrible. Why would anyone tried to use this?

1000 boxen? no problem.
Shorl Systems has some funky watercooling-type systems that'll handle a cluster like that, no problem.

Re:LOL That's got to hurt.Slashdot has implemented a number of features to try and avoid this. (i.e. listing the domain name beside links) I guess people are still sucessful sometimes, though.
Slipping in goatse links is easy. Too easy even. There are a number of redirector services (shorl.com) which allow you to hide the URL, and even most mainstream sites do have some way to redirect.
No, simply slipping in goatse into a comment is so easy that it has become uninteresting. The real art now is to have a goatsy comment moderated up rather than down as the usual troll or flamebait. Seems so far it is working well (+4, and counting...)
Next challenge: slip one into a story submission!

agreed...I know this might be hard for the Slashdot crowd but the Rep. is right.
Columbia and Challenger were not destroyed because of an O-ring or a piece of foam... they were destroyed because NASA as an organization failed [astron.berkeley.edu]. We need to fix NASA before we continue to launch shuttles... which have become glorified construction and grocery delivery vehicles as opposed to exploratory or R&D craft.

Left one out...
Our poster left out the recently formed Alliance for Digital Progress with giants like MS, Intel, Cisco, etc. that also aims to fight anti-piracy policy initiatives in the name of protecting innovation. Here's the recent news on the ADP. They have no site yet, it appears...

Wow!
A post sporting links to shorl.com and tinyurl.com that is being modded up! What is the world coming to?
-
Re:sigIf you want to post really long URL's take a look a http://shorl.com. This is a site that provides shorter alias to URL's that you supply. The alias can then be posted to newsgroups, slashdot, etc, without fear of being broken up. There is also http://tinyurl.com, which does the same thing.
Of course, as moderation of this post shows, both of them are unfortunately also rather useful for trolling, so I'm not sure how long you'll be able to use these.

Benefits...
One of the benefits is a "gratis copy" of RMS' new book... I've got the whole damn thing scanned into PDF files if you want some holiday reading. Joebeone

Sony rep. addresses this exact point.
Tom Shorl, a product development manager with Sony spoke to Sony's dedication to the Linux market at a conference in Minneapolis this past summer. He's posted the text of those remarks, and some elaboration on them, on his own site, linked above.

Sign the petition for line-item veto! The president needs a line-item veto. Bush Sr. wanted it. Didn't get it. Clinton wanted it. Didn't get it. Until the president has the ability to veto the individual components of a piece of legislation, we'll always have this type of pork.
Correct. And not only the president does want it, the people want it too! Some even have set up an online petition for it!

"Giga Group" studyThe Giga Group has a nice comparative study about the durability of applications on various systems.
Try running the Win 3.11 version of solitaire on XP, and then try the same thing with your old a.out hello-world.c program that you wrote on Linux 0.99. You'd be surprised who fares best...

Gartner Group's take on thisMigrating to a different OS costs money, whether from an expensive one to a cheaper one, or from one expensive to another. When you make the calculations, make sure to include a calculation of when the migration will start to pay off.
Very true indeed. The Gartner Group has a nice writeup about the tradeoffs, which includes a nice checklist of the hidden and not so hidden costs of a migration to Linux. A must read!
Of course, there are easyer ways to convince your manager...
