I see us traveling down the same dark path now. I know this Santayana quote is almost cliche now but it bears repeating: "Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it."

Interesting bit of trivia: here in Brazil people do not recognize the Wright Brothers as the fathers of heavier-than-air flight, but rather our own Alberto Santos-Dumont (link, link). Never dug inside the story properly to know who's right and who's wrong.

I dont know why that was mod'd 'flamebait' but it certainly is true. You can't be guilty of abusing a monopoly position if you don't have a monopoly. Like I've been quoting from here, Gates admits of plotting to use "corporate presence" to "jam" products on people, get them to use it - which is the very antithesis of "consumer choice" if you ask me.

I agree with you, in that the number of times I've gone looking for a particular album and found that it was out of print is too depressing to even think about.

That said, you may be interested in checking out Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. (They mostly do folk and roots music, but lots of other neat stuff, so they may or may not be your cup of tea.) Folkways has their entire list of out of print CDs listed on the web, and if you want one, they will burn it to a CDR and mail it to you. (For an extra fee...) So you can effectively get a copy of everything they've ever put out.

Here's a reality check for the people who think that they should be able to control what their presentation looks like via the web: The only way you can achieve that is to require that anyone who looks at your stuff uses exactly the same hardware and software you do. That means no using your website from a handheld or a web-enabled phone (wrong size screen, maybe wrong OS), no access for the blind (are you subject to the ADA? Are you sure?), no using a browser you didn't think to code for. You are discriminating against more than just the people like me who use Mozilla and lynx; you are also discriminating against the high-disposable-income folks who use the latest wireless gadgets. First, it is a common misconception that global warming means, it will be warmer everywhere. This is not true, especially for Europe (see Gulf-stream, effect of lower density due to molted ice on).

Second, Greenland (named by Erik the Red to encourage his people to settle there, after discovering that a name like Iceland was detrimental to it's publicity) is still green in some areas (and there are still glaciers, too)).

When Dick Rutan piloted the Voyager around the world near the Equator in 1986, it was a far more impressive feat. They flew just over 24,000 miles, which is slightly further than the circumference of the Earth.

It's embarassing that he hasn't produced a flyable prototype. It's quite possible to build such a thing; the Avrocar did it in the 1950s. The thing was aerodynamically unstable. This was expected, and an active stabilization system was provided, but 1950s control technology wasn't up to the job of making an unstable aircraft flyable. Today, that's far less of a problem.

Did it not occur to them that there are platforms on which they could test the effects of prolonged weightlessness? Or that studies have been done, including similar lab studies. Oh, well.
